If a passenger is wearing headphones, that's the "I don't want to talk" symbol.
I play light pop hits quietly because a silent ride is way too awkward.

Good video! however I wanted to point out: yes you CAN cancel trips even after you pick up the Uber rider and you're on the road. Lyft is more difficult but it can be done. If you have rude pax arguing in the vehicle, you stop in a safe location, cancel the ride and ask them to exit the vehicle. You don't have to put up with BS from people, remember IT'S YOUR CAR.

    Fellow driver here.
One correction: do not ever ever hit on a passenger. EVER. And if they try to hit on you tell them it is against Uber and Lyft policy. You stated that discomfort and potential to report is the reason to avoid. Not quite. The reason to avoid it is it is strictly against Uber and Lyft policy. So even if you feel you are using your best judgement, it is still not ok.
Why does this policy exist? Because many people are not super comfortable expressing discomfort with something. So even if the attention in unwelcome, the passenger may not express this. Also, it is generally forbidden to hit on people when there is a power differential. Ex: boss and supervisor or teachwr and student. In this situation, if you are the passenger, you may feel trapped in the situation because you are in a motor vehicle with someone that may now know your home address. If you are the driver, you may feel uncomfortable but be unable to express it because passenger may rate badly or make a claim against you that risks your driver status. Either way, there is a power imbalance and it is best to not hit on people.
Now, I haven't even mentioned that you are a male driver and women already get a lot of male attention and may not want more of it while trying to relax in a ride home. But this is another thing. As a female driver, I have had many passengers express relief that I am a female and it is due to male drivers behaving in creepy ways. And everyone defines creepy a bit differently.
In summary, please change your advice to say to not hit on passengers. This falls under the "don't be an asshole" rule but needs special calling out because many drivers don't seen to get it.

I always greet the rider (whatever time of day) and ask them if the air is a comfortable temp and if they would like to listen to the radio if so what is their fav station type of music etc. If they seem comfortable with the questions or start talking then, I make sure to ask how their day is going and see if they open up...if not I have learned to leave them alone after that bit..but sometimes you can tell if someone is feeling anxious from the akward silence so I do this bit to make them feel comfortable and see that I'm a nice guy that's not going to take them to some dark allyway lol. And I usually get five stars, and more often lately good comments on the feed back...respect and politeness is what I've learned is the easiest way to keep your rating up I'm still holding a 4.90 😊

Each trip is different. Each rider is different. There is not one way to deal with everyone. Greet all riders pleasantly. You have to make the next move based on the rider. Some want to talk the whole trip and some won't say a word. My music selection is usually pop (vanilla) or electronica with no profanity. On longer trips I will ask the rider what they would like to hear and oblige. As long as you're driving safely, courteous and have manners you will be just fine. I've had all types of people from all walks of life ride safely with me and my demeanor is the same. Keep your car clean. Don't allow anyone to smoke inside your vehicle. Be polite from beginning to end. If the rider wants you to go the way they want to go via their directions just let them navigate. Help those who could use your assistance getting in and out of your vehicle. Help load/unload items or at least offer to help. Go above and beyond to provide a great experience for a 5 minute ride or a 45 minute ride. Finally, smile at the riders. You'd be surprised at the positive results. All these are my opinions based on my personal experiences as a ride share driver for nearly 4 years.

I just had my first day with Lyft today as a driver. It wasn't very busy and I only gave a few rides, but I play easy listening music like Adult Alternative softly in the car, and when I ask each rider about the music, they said they didn't mind at all. Personally, I'd just play non offensive music quietly and just ask each person as you go.

For the first tip you mention about asking for 5 stars. When customers ask about if i enjoy driving for Uber, i tend to segue into the rating system and explaining how drivers have to maintain a star rating of 4.7 and higher otherwise we get deactivated, so when a passenger rates a driver 4 stars or below that basically means to Uber to deactivate that driver. I've had so many passenger say that they never knew that the rating system was that strict for drivers. So i do it in a way to educate them, and they seem to enjoy learning the ins and outs and what we as drivers face on a daily basis.
They also love when you explain that you can add in stops. I've had so many people bar hopping that they want to go down to the gas station in town to get food, and they enter that as a destination and then ask me to wait for them to schedule another ride to a bar. In these instances i explain that they could have made it a stop on the route so they wouldn't have to pay a double fare instead they would just be charged a small wait time that will usually be cheaper then re-booking a ride. They seem to love these little nuggets of info, and my tips increase a lot giving them this info.
Just some food for thought based on my experiences.

I have a small lunch box sitting in the middle of the back seat. It holds 5 bottles of water. I also have a bag of mints in the pouch behind the front passenger seat. I offer both to the riders. They always say thank you. some use the ammenities and some don't. That's fine. To be upset by offering these tells me that rider has severe issues.

Here is my tip. It has paid off numerous times. Paid off with the following customers leaving my car saying I will be getting a 5 star rating. Be ready to open the door for the elderly, handicapped, the prissy females, those obviously wealthy, couples on a romantic date night, someone that seems depressed before they even get in the car, someone with groceries or some other bags or stuff, those coming or going to a fancy party, someone with a drunk companion. The list goes on and on. Then again, I come from a upper middle class family and been sub consciously trained on these issues. My rating averages 4.89 for the last two years. Yeah, I pick up at the middle class areas of California if your wondering.

Good guidelines. Present yourself and greet your rider with asking for name and confirm destination. Ask how is the temperature in your car accordingly the season and offer favorite music from Pandora before step on the gas. Respect the peace of the rider and answer shortly his/her questions. Maps are not always correct withGPS offer if the rider has preferred route. Stay professional don't over reacting and record the trips. Has backup for police in case of accidents. Stay positive

Great advice! I've been doing Lyft for 2 months now heard some horror stories from passengers about other Lyft drivers.
One of the horror stories I heard was the driver didn't turn the AC on drove around with the windows down in Phoenix it's a 100 degrees plus he wanted to save gas. customer asked twice to roll the windows up and turn the AC on he refused to she gave him a one-star rating.

    • @redevilrrr
      @redevilrrr 5 років тому

Roy Giles Funny thing - with ac on it's even better for fuel mileage above 20mph because of open windows makes car less aerodynamical. Not something I've made up or discovered, it has been done on many autoblogs and car shows. That driver was probably the type that doesn't care anyway. But if I were a passenger in the same situation I would give a 1 as well. If the driver doesn't realize that it's really inconvenient for rider then there's no other way.

Also, make sure you're obeying the law when you drive on Uber and Lyft. When you own a vehicle you're the one who can be held liable if anything goes south. Don't allow large groups of people into your vehicle that exceed the number seat belts. Make sure you look up the law regarding car safety seats in your jurisdiction. And remember Uber and Lyft vehicles are not taxi cab drivers or licensed taxis. Because anything you allow on your property whether you own it or lease it; you can be held liable potentially. Also, be very careful with passengers who are seriously intoxicated. They can engage in behavior that is potentially dangerous to themselves, your vehicle, yourself, and other passengers. Also, in a major city be very careful driving after 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. these are tips that I'd like to share as an operator for Uber and Lyft out of Washington DC. Everything that has been said in this video is spot-on but I thought I would add my two sense considering I drive for Uber and Lyft part-time on the side. Also make sure you look up the laws in your jurisdiction pertaining to open containers of alcohol. In Washington DC for example, that is unlawful to have an open container of alcohol inside of a motor vehicle. That can result in a 60-day jail sentence and a $500 fine if you were pulled over by the police. Also be very Vigilant about what people bring in your vehicle.

Jim Carey a destination filter is part of the Uber and Lyft app. If you want to go home or to a certain address. You input that into the filter and the system will search for trips heading in that direction so you don't have to run empty. You can't just use the destination filter all the time because you're only allowed to use of it on Uber every 24 hours and I think 4 on Lyft

What does showering have to do with washing your car? I shower everyday but I'm not gonna stand outside in three feet of snow to wash my car to pick up a bunch of people in a ice/snowstorm. There's so much snow here right now, and temps below freezing so yes I'm a person who washes my body everyday even when it's cold outside, but I don't stand outside in the snow when I shower and the waters hot. Washing my car, I'm outside, in the freezing, and snow, and sometimes it's just too too cold to put water on it. Did that last week and had to chop the frozen ice layer off my car. Won't do it again. But I would say "sorry bout the salt, but it's just too too cold to wash a car today" and then I giggle and they always say "I don't blame you"...

I disagree on not asking the rider for a 5 Star Rating. I live in a very diverse area and I get alot of times I passengers who either don't speak english very well or had a friend or family pay for their ride. Also you'd be surprised how many people either forget to rate or don't even care. So in that case I have to find a way to communicate in a nice professional way that I hope that they enjoyed the trip and I would rate them 5 stars if they did the same. I'd rather take that chance in making sure they're reminded to do it or else you're losing on alot of potential ratings.

If I want to listen to my music I am going to...however I also have a wide variety in taste and therefore have basically all the different genres in my playlist. I'll play my music but choose what to play based on the individual riders. I have phone chargers available, my car is kept clean, and I take good care of my car. I haven't even started yet and even I know not to be retarded and start a trip before the passenger gets in. All I will be asking of my passengers is that they not slam my doors on their way in or out of my car. Lastly I refuse to drive the hours in which people are partying, drinking, etc. I love my car, I take good care of it, I baby it, and I will not tolerate anyone causing any damage of any kind to my car.

I have 3% 1 star trips, 8% 4 star, and 1% 3 star. I'm not sure what I did to get that report except maybe taking a bad route the the uber GPS made me take due to a concert and basketball game taking place. Most rides are 3 miles. Uber pays 89 cents a mile. $2.67 + 10 minutes at 11 cents a minute. = $3.80 Total.
Remeber that it takes you 5 or 10 minutes to go get most customers that you get paid nothing for.
You will see the passenger pay anywhere from $6.00 to $10.00 for that ride.
Uber lies when they say they take 25% from a driver. It is more like 42% to 64% of the ride total!
They also trick drivers by telling them a customer is only 2 minutes away.
Many times that 2 minutes adds up to 10 minutes that you do not get paid for.
Then again, you pick up the customer for a short ride. Sometimes you work Uber for less than it costs for Gas!!!
WELCOME TO UBER IN 2018 - WHERE UBER BANKRUPTS 90% OF IT'S DRIVERS!
