    As an IC, and NOT an employee, I have the ABSOLUTE RIGHT to know AHEAD OF TIME any and all info that will help me make an informed decision about where I decide to drive MY CAR paying for MY GAS for MY SAFETY. So, hell yes, I will HAPPILY discriminate 24/7 for my safety.

      +Ronnie Inabnit Hey this is true as well! This doesn't work on the 3am calls in the suburbs, however. If you're stuck out there, you're stuck. Gotta wait and take a nap. You might not get another call for an hour, and it may again be 18 miles away (hopefully not). I think that in the future, Uber will allow us to edit how many miles we can drive to do a pickup.

    I'm concerned about being a female and having a destination going to an unsafe area of Chicago or an area I'm not familiar with. I'm an accepting person but I'm not willing to get shot driving down the wrong street. If I'm an independent, why don't I have a say of where I'm going? It's not a matter of money, but safety.

  • @RandomGuyDan

    I wouldn't cancel for a short trip, but several times recently I have had riders pull me 30 miles away from downtown Chicago right before the evening rush. Sure I make a decent fare way out to the 'burbs, but it is an hour out and at least an hour back with minimal fare opportunities on the trip back and I miss most of the evening rush and the related surge.
    This is perhaps my biggest gripe with Uber so far (about 6 weeks in). Uber has a very sophisticated system and should be able to notify drivers that the ride will take them far outside the downtown area and give them the right to decline.
    I have never cancelled an accepted ride except for a customer no show, and I won't start now. But this is what I currently do for a living and the long trips outside the city end up costing me about as much as I make.

      D Palmer SAME HERE!!!! Always right b4 I have to pick my son up from daycare at 6:30pm & from Atlanta, that could EASILY be 1.5, almost 2 hours depending on traffic & it never happens until about 4:30pm then I HAVE to start heading right back from where I came with no pay bc I can't use the "enter your destination" feature bc there's not enough time at that point. Sometimes I've been able to do it & it's wonderful except for the time Uber made me 24 mins late picking my son up which costs $1 per minute after 6:30pm.. So I basically lost that entire fare. I have to put my arrival time as 30 mins b4 the actual time otherwise they'd have me late every time! I complained & then they did a survey about weeks ago asking questions about that particular feature... Dunno if it was really aimed at me or if everyone had the opportunity to take the survey.

    I take all rides. The short ones are a cost of doing business. Assuming I don't know the destination, I'm often surprised -- hell, I just left the airport, now I'm going back (good), or the odd lady who needs to go about 40 miles. You never know. But, where I usually drive, I can't be picky, and short rides add up right now to little bonuses to compensate.

    • @imanione
      @imanione 7 років тому +3

      Cygnus X-1 Heh, this is good feedback. I was that odd lady, the drive cost me $51. It took just over am hour. However, the rider (me) is now becoming an Uber driver and guess who's codes I'm using to sign up for Uber & Lyft? Yep, my super friendly & patient 40+ mile driver. She gonna get PAID, because she was good to me! And THAT'S why you do it! ;-)

    • @johndoh4064
      @johndoh4064 7 років тому +2

      Sure. Take all rides. Without question or concern.... Until you repeatedly catch fares going across state lines into a neighboring state without reciprocity, getting stuck in four hours of 3 mph traffic heading into said state and 6 hours back out. All on a trip that SHOULD take slightly longer than an hour in either direction but due to traffic and the fact that you cannot originate a trip from within said state and therefore cannot deduct anything for the return trip, you've just wasted an entire day on one single fare ( after toll reimbursements, a whole $55 ) that not only was a complete wash due to it being all on your dime on the way back, you actually lost money due to the substantially longer trip back.... to finally get back to your home state, log on and surprise surprise....get another pax wanting to go across the state line......No smart business would do this repeatedly and neither will I.

    I use an iPhone 6+ and drive for UberX and UberASSIST in SoCal. I've tried this method on several rides now and every time it just says "To: As directed..." for the destination. Wouldn't matter for me though if it did work...unless I'm in the top three of the airport queue I accept pretty much any ride that's less than 10 minutes away.

  • @AndrewJamesGordon
    @AndrewJamesGordon 8 років тому +17

    I started driving 2 days ago around Princeton, NJ. I got a fare from somewhere in Princeton thinking it would be to some of the local stores or to the train station. After I had the riders luggage in the trunk and rider in the car, she told me she was going to JFK Airport in NY. It took me 2hrs 26mins to get there, and a further 3hrs to get back home. Afterward I searched for a way to see if I could see the final destination before pick-up so I could cancel such a long ride as it wasn't worth the hassle of driving in Friday rush hour traffic going into NYC. I found your video and tried the "Waybill Method" the next day, but like many people here keep getting "TO: As Directed...".A few things Uber could do to improve the experience for drivers would be to:1. Allow drivers to see the rider's destination before pick-up so they can cancel on an extra-long journey they don't wish to make.2. Have a way to set a radius or region the driver is comfortable driving in3. Let the driver have a picture of the rider in the same way the rider gets a picture of the driver so we know who we're looking for and to prevent some riders getting in the wrong vehicle.

      Seeing a picture in advance gives the driver an opportunity to discriminate based on what the passenger looks like by canceling the ride on them. This has happened with other services where they require a picture. You have the passenger's name in advance so most drivers I know asks what's your name before they get into the car. That's all the verification you need.

    last week i drove 2.5miles to a pickup location. It was at an IHop restaurant in Los Angeles at the corner of Western and Slauson .
    I waited for a while and had to call the rider. she came out and asked me to wait a little longer to pay her bill. i agreed.after about 3minutes she came out with her husband and daughter. when i start the meter their destination was unbelievably 0.1miles .Just crossing slauson and the second house. I make $2.40, spend about 15minutes.
    I even asked them "Do You really need a ride for this?"
    the lady said "because we are lazy...."
    may be she is right.

Wait five minutes, and if they don't come out, cancel, collect your $4 ( or whatever it is ) and go to the next ping. In my city, a short haul will be switched to an automatic cancellation, and you'll get the cancel fee.

    Uber Man, for Mardi Gras which started this past weekend Uber has "reached out" to their veteran drivers who were driving last year for Mardi Gras and are still driving now. One thing they said was to ditch the Google Maps navigation and switch over to WAZE. Turns out that that seems like a good suggestion. I have had very little trouble using WAZE vs Google Maps. In addition, they said to ignore Uber's advice to text riders first before calling. With the crowds and traffic it's best to confirm the pax location immediately after accepting a ping by calling them. That way you can talk and drive legally here while texting requires you to pull over and stop to avoid violating local law and possibly having an accident. Besides, there is often no place to pull over in New Orleans as parking is tight and finding a safe location off the street is not easy. So WAZE it and call, don't text. I've had good results. If a pax asks me why I didn't text (that's never happened to me) I'll just explain that that is what Uber advised us to do during the busy Mardi Gras season.

    When I started it I was talking to someone and we were joking about taking people to the airport (which can suck.. and is roughly 30 minutes away).
    I accept a ride. Go to the location and park in the drive way.
    It's a younger couple and the girl walks out with a suitcase.

    UberAlly says....IF you do not want a short trip because it takes too long to get there....and UBER dispatches you anyways...CALL the client and ask them how far they are going. If its not worth your while.....explain it to them and ask them to please cancel the trip. Most clients don't have a problem with that once it is explained to them that it cost us money to take them under 3 miles if we have to drive 5 miles to go get them. Just make sure they cancel within the 5 minute timezone so they are not charged. Uber doesn't always take care of us so we are FORCED to figure out ways to watch out for numero uno...YOU! Uber on!

    I don't mind a block or two when I'm close. Downtown in Houston Ive strung several quick trips together with the pickups scheduled before I drop off. If it goes right, you get the min on each one for 3-4 quick trips. I.e., I had a dropoff then like a pickup 1-4 blocks away, then a few more like that.

    In Cincinnati we frequently get trip requests that are 10-20 and even 25 minutes away or more. A low acceptance rating will not get you banned from the app, and if this is a concern you can decline the trip. Generally speaking, I will not accept rides that are more than ten minutes away unless I'm in a rural part of our pick-up area.

    My concern with wanting to know where a rider is going is due to the out-of-the-blue rides to Manhattan. I live in NJ, and NYC is 40 miles from me. I've been driving for Uber only for a month, but this past Sunday I had my first drop off in Manhattan. It's an 1 hr and 30 min ride just to get out of the Holland tunnel, along with $24 in tolls. The fare was $67 after uber fees, but that doesn't cover the tolls I have to pay to get back to NJ through Brooklyn and Staten Island. It was another $26 in tolls to get back along with needing to refuel after 80 miles of travel. So my actual profit was roughly $25 out of the $67 fare.
    Last night, I had a pickup at 8:47pm, and when I got there they were going to Manhattan with a bunch of luggage. I had to cancel because I just couldn't take them. My EZ pass was depleted and I was set to "clock out" at 10pm.
    It just wouldn't be time or cost efficent to drive all the way into Manhattan. So that's really the only reason why I want to know where a rider is going before hand, so I can avoid trips to NYC unless I can actually make the trip.

    I appreciate this, because I saw on the news a few weeks ago about an Uber driver that took a rider (a Pro NFL player) from IL to NY, because he had an emergency. I get it, it was nice of him to do it, and the cost of the trip was $600, I think and he was tipped $300, but that's when I started thinking, "How far can they request a destination? And how can I see where they want to go to make sure I'm not driving hundreds of miles because I didn't know where they were going beforehand." So, this video helps, thank you!

    Saturday I made $1.88 PER HOUR! I made $15. Uber made $22!
    Saturday, I put 105 miles on my car, in about 8 hours (2pm-10pm). Uber credited me with 2h 30m time, and 55 (mi). Uber gave me $70. At one point, surges were all around me but I only made it into one, for 1.4x! I had SEVEN rides for UNDER $5! So, I GROSSED $8.75/hr BEFORE expenses, which would be $55 (IRS 55¢/mi), or $6.87 per hour - netting $1.88 PER HOUR! I netted about $15. Uber kept about $22!

    The problem is how to see their destination before you accept it but the damn thing goes by so fast, I don’t mind shit trips but I do t like ending up going three freeways for many miles without notice, it should say long trip or how many miles because I have to get back home after drop off as well.

    This will be great. I won't use it to cancel short rides, I'll use it to travel toward home at the end of the day. Sometimes a PAX will take me a long way from home and this way I can take rides in the direction I need to go. I've asked Uber to give us the ability to do this but they've ignored my requests. Lyft already does it with their destination filter (in some markets).

    Here's something riders are doing in Jax. They request on a street with a fake house number during a surge. If it's main st for example. And there's a real address of 1234 and 1236. They enter 1235! When u accept the ride, it's shows no surge? But u see there is a surge in that area. It give you the address to a nav too. But, when u tap the area, say to contact the ride. Area that show pickup and destination. You will see that the pickup address is listed as "unknown address" I think the uber computer is confused about the riders actual location so no surge charge is applied. Happened twice to me yesterday. I cancelled both!!

    My problem with why I need this is going to new orleans. My car is an 06 trail blazer, so I'm not allowed to pick people up in new orleans. However, living in metairie makes it to where everyone I pick up want to go to new orleans. So until I get a newer model car I'm expected to drive to new orleans to drop someone off but, then I have to drive all the way back to metaire roughly (11 miles) before I can even ping. Hey Uber Man. You need to make a video where Uber notifys passengers when the surge is over so they can request, what happens is as you get closer the surge refreshes so you as a driver don't get it, what I do is log off for a couple of minutes get into the area that was surging and it will refresh to a surge log on and sweep the rides on surge

Then you can cancel and split. A friend of mine has Done this. It doesn't help your rating at all but if you don't care about that, then it's all good.

    That's funny cause last night I accepted a ride that said 29mins away. On my way there, the passenger called wanting to know if I was coming because she wanted a ride to the convenient store and back, and I said sure. We hung up and shortly after thinking about it, I canceled the ride cause ain't to driver gonna do that to there car for only a few bucks! Soon after I canceled her request, I try texting her right away saying "sorry I'm 30mins away" right before I got a new request, so my text ended up going to the next passenger.

    If drivers’ ratings are at their highest status, each ride will show 1) time towards pickup, 2) drive time duration, and 3) estimated paid $$ for every ride. But if any driver’s 1) acceptance rating, 2) cancellations rating, or 3) overall score gets lowered, drivers will NOT be privy to this info.
