A few years before he passed, my wife and I had the real pleasure of meeting Mr. Borgnine. It was at a convention in NJ. He was SO friendly, funny and very endearing. R.I.P. Mr. Borgnine. Thanks for the memories. 🤓
We all loved Mr. Borgnine growing up, McHales Navy is the TV show that really made him famous, we could use more good family friendly shows like that today, RIP Mr. Borgnine we still love you!

The reason he didn’t recognize him was because he was only doing movies. When he mentioned the other two actors the kid selling candy knew who they were because they were on popular tv shows of the time. So Ernest knew right then and there that being on tv was going to get him more exposure than the big screen.
Loved that show. It wasn't just an American favourite. I grew up in BC Canada. Remember rushing home to watch this after school when I was a young fellow. Many hours of laughter.
Such a genuine actor. Thoroughly deserved his Oscar for 'Marty'! Glad he changed his mind to do McHale. The movie inspiration he talks about looks to be 'Destination Gobi', but that is a drama based on a real story judging from the trailer. There is definitely a lot in common though with an earlier BBC Radio comedy series 'The Navy Lark', which I would also recommend.
A friend of mine went on a TCM Cruise and went in to a lounge one day that was empty except for an old man sitting way across the room. After awhile the man waved to my friend to come over and join him. The guy was Mr. Borgnine and my friend said that he was the most charming person he had ever met. They sat and talked like they had been old friends. Needless to say that made the cruise totally worthwhile.
An broken pocket watch brought EB to a clock shop in Gettysburg. My friend owned the shop and fixed EB's watch. He told me Ernest Borgnine was a really nice man.
Borgnine always impressed me as a regular guy. Yeah, he was an actor, an Academy Award winner and very versatile. But he just seemed like a guy who, on weekends, would paint the trim on his house, or wash the dog, help his wife, play with his kids. I'm sure he enjoyed his celebrity but it didn't seem to go to his head.
I think you're right. The key to his great success was that he was real. A bigger smile God never created. We sure could use more men the likes of EB today!!!
I got to see the Wide Wide World of Sports episode where Mr. Borgnine caught a World record marlin. HE fought it so long, his hands were bleeding. He was a really great man.

He joined the Navy in 1938, he got out in 45', which of course made playing his character exceptionally easy and convincing. This isn't about E.B., had to mention it because I thought you'd find it interesting. I know this sounds crazy, but In my opinion, the most true to life, and most convincing comedic Navy movie is by far; "Nobody's Perfect" (1968), starring James Whitmore as the Captain of a Dive Salvage ship homeported in Japan. James Whitmore plays this old salt like an old salt and is hilarious beyond belief at just being regular "Navy".
I was lucky enough to meet this great actor and man a few years ago at a Chillerthon. Hundreds of people waited on line to get a picture or autograph, You were allowed one question as the line went around the entire hotel. I asked him about Joe Flynn, I had heard that they didn't get along on McHales Navy (the great actor Mako, who guest starred about 7 times on the show told me he once saw Ernie and Joe almost come to blows. He said Flynn was a cranky complainer) Ernie said "Nah, Joe Flynn was a sweetheart!! A sweetheart!" I think they had one or 2 squabbles in 4 years but overall Ernie loved Joe Flynn and just about everyone else he worked with. That was Ernie, just a wonderful human being.
He was almost sunk in another shipboard role on "The Poseidon Adventure" (1972), with other notable actors in that cast. His character was one of the few who did survive, if you remember the film.
His acting wasn't what made him a great man. Read up on his military career and his work after the military. Incredible, inspiring, and honorable. We have far too few men like him.
I'm a lieutenant colonel, Army, and it's great Ernest Borgnine bacame an actor. So much comedy. Thanks for the happiness. A true Veteran. He served for our country as a Navy Chief. Thanks for your service. That's a great laugh.
Bed time when I was a little guy was always around 8 o'clock. One of my childhood memories is laying in bed and hearing the theme song for this show coming from the living room echoing down the hall. My dad had it tuned in. Miss those days and especially miss my dad. Dad passed away 9/14 at 85. Love you pop.
I recently read a medical study about longevity where research was done on 100 people, all of them over 85. I don't remember much of what I read but the most profound statement in the entire article was when one of the doctors was asked, "What, if anything did every one of these people have in common?" He said "There wasn't a grump among them, not a single one." I think that tells us everything we need to know about life. Worry, stress, anger, hate etc all release poison into our systems at a level that we don't fully understand or appreciate yet. This man (and most others like him) have a joy for living that we should all learn from. You can see that he gets a great deal of joy just sitting and sharing stories with someone.

Had the opportunity to meet Ernest Borgnine and his wife at a party when I was a kid. He was exactly what you see, a kind, humble, and funny human being. He took time from the party to listen to how much I loved the 1997 McHale's Navy movie. I will never forget that night.
Joe Flynn and Tim Conway were the best of friends. There's video of them attending Stan Laurel's funeral. And you can see just how good of friends they were. Joe left us too soon and we miss his great talent!
I really enjoyed his appearance on Little House on the Prairie. I can't recall if it was the pilot movie or a later episode, but the story revolved around Laura running away to some mountain top and Ernest playing some kind of hermit/angel to took care of her.
I too was one of those kids, one of my fave TV shows...it wasn't until I was much older that I understood what a famous actor Ernest Borgnine was and that he had actually been in the Navy during WWII. a true gentleman and talent from old Hollywood.
I don't recall exactly when Ernie told me that . I met him while he was making Airwolf, and we had quite a few chats after that . He was very pro-military We hit it off pretty good because I was at the time a Navy Recruiter I remember one time he joined me and Ed McMahon Who was a Retired Col. in the Marines in a little restaurant called Chadneys, across the street from NBC studios and we talked about a little of everything , Both he and Ed could Talk ..I used to say when I saw him Hereeeeeers Ed , and He would say Herreeessss Ernie and Jake (me) and they would always talk my ear off.. I miss them both R.I.P. To both of them We will never see their like again !! Later Stay Safe !!.
For me it's sad that I started watching the show 3weeks ago. And realised that almost everyone of the crew are dead. Only Bobby is alive. And I don't know why, but i miss those times in the 60s and I was born in the late 80s. Those shows and films have "heart" it is good natured fun, it was possible saying jokes. And people understand that it was a joke, no body was offended. I have the feeling that those times when the show was aired, the times were happier than today. RIP to all actors and actresses of the show. You made me hard loughing, sometimes I laughed with tears.
I too was one of those kids who couldn't wait to watch McHales Navy and I still watch it today at my senior years. McHales Navy along with another older program were and are the very best of programs. Anything programs today are garbage. These are the best programs on the go.

As a young kid in the 70ties in Costa Rica I remember watching "La marina de McHale" every afternoon in a black and white TV. it was wonderful, truly enjoyed it.
I loved to watch MaHale’s Navy after school ( elementary) Sometimes I would think, I should be working on my homework. Damn though, it was fun to watch!

As a young kid in the 70ties in Costa Rica I remember watching "La marina de McHale" every afternoon in a black and white TV. it was wonderful, truly enjoyed it.
I loved to watch MaHale’s Navy after school ( elementary) Sometimes I would think, I should be working on my homework. Damn though, it was fun to watch!
Great show just bought the series on DVD and have been watching it for a couple weeks now. Wouldn't have been any good without Borgnine and Conway.
Don't forget Joe Flynn and Bob Hastings!

In season 2 the writers for the show really kicked it up a notch . Then it was mad capped mayhem from their on out . Great side splitting comedy . R.I.P Ernest Borgnine
