  • Ernie, Cris and crew descend on a campground just outside of Mitchelville, Iowa. The resident campers have never seen such an RV. Ever gracious, Ernie makes sure everyone is happy with autographs and photos and all questions answered. My brother was disappointed nobody wanted pictures of The Georgie Boy backing in...

You're right. Ernest seemed like just a regular guy, despite his fame. And for him to cruise around America on a nice RV bus just reaffirms what a regular guy he was. Like the saying goes, they don't make em like this anymore, unfortunately. Closest experience among today's stars is Matthew McCaugnahay (spelling?), who used to live in a RV, while he was famous. Always thought that was pretty cool.

Those old hollywood guys felt that they owed their society some grace, having received so much. I heard that Clark Gable had his name in the phone book and no one called him and got rude. We could all use that kind of respect and grace.

I met him once when I was a medical courier picking up from doctors offices in Tarzana. Probably around 1986? He was coming out of a Drs. office in a medical bldg and I was walking towards him, he was holding his arm like he had blood taken and was throwing punches, so I said to him hey buddy ya wanna go a few rounds? When he looked up and said yeah let's go, in a gravely voice I recognized him immediately. I said oh shit ernest borgnine! I asked for his autograph and said I was a fan for years. Great guy was really funny and genuine
