    Head and Munky inspired so many kids to pick up the guitar in the mid to late 90’s. Their tone and playing on their first few records was so unique.

    I totally think Korn deserve all of their success. Munky was a serious inspiration to me ever since their self-titled debut, which I still listen to (Life is Peachy is still my fav though). I love that these dudes are now considered one of the greats that will endure for generations.

    I know nothing about what key I'm in, what chord I'm playing or any theory whatsoever. I just play what I hear and play what I want. I'm in my 50s and started playing in the late 70s when the dawn of metal and shred began. Later on in my 30s Korn inspired me to try a 7 string and the rest is history. Thanks Munky and Head!

    The members of Korn started out in the way early 90s under the band name L.A.P.D, back then they had more of a Red Hot Chili Peppers funk sound, and they even got signed to a small record label before they started the band Korn back in 1993! Like them or not, these guys are lifers in the music business and they are doing the exact job they were put on this earth to do.

    It’s inspiring how they busted out some great riffs but didn’t (yet) understand the theory behind it. It’s pretty cool how he’s going back and studying himself essentially.

      Have you ever heard the band L.A.P.D? It was Fieldy, Munky, and David's band before they started Korn. Search 'Lapd Korn' on UA-cam and check out their live show from 1991 if you get the chance. They used 6 string guitars back then and were sort of a heavier version of The Red Hot Chili Peppers. The guitar style is totally different than how they sound with the 7 string guitars in Korn!

      Almost all the greats learned to play by ear in their bedrooms. Absolutely no music theory. Music theory really only helps to label what's happening in a song imo. Use it to write a song and you'll just sound like radio head. Lol. Just play what you feel. If it sounds good, then it is.

    • @Aaron-zh4kj
      @Aaron-zh4kj Рік тому +1

      I’m not a jazz player, but I know so many of the Jazz greats didn’t know basically any of the upper level music theory contained in their songs. Music Theory is just describing music composition in a technical way. It’s kinda like the difference between building a car and driving one. Rock and metal music even more so is filled with musicians who can’t describe their own music with theory. Like you basically said, it’s interesting to see a higher profile guitarist make that transition from not knowing to knowing. In the past few years, I’ve experienced that a little bit on my own when I’ve gone back listened to demos and recordings of idea I made from early on in my guitar playing, knowing a lot more theory now. I’ve learned theory is really good for description and not prescription for a lot of us (minus maybe Jazz). I find I make better stuff when I don’t stop to think about theory. But many players, especially Jazz, can often be the opposite.

    I think he’s absolutely spot on with cables. People will spend £1000 on a guitar/bass and then don’t want to spend more than £15 for a cable.

    I wish he could just encourage me to practice guitar. I learned how to tune - or almost - but untuning my guitar and using the tuner and going back and fourth and I notice the different tones to tune. My music teacher just knows and says nothing (theyre getting paid, might as well just help yourself lol) my teacher says nothing he just teaches me what I need to know but you have to figure it out yourself. No one says anything really. It’s kind of annoying. It took over a year to get it right or start to understand from practice but it’d be easier if my teacher or someone; anyone could had taught me to untune on purpose and retune to get accustomed. I’m still stupidly practicing, it’s so hard.
