No. I'm sorry besides the acting and cinematography. This movie was straight up horse shit. The story is a literal dumpster fire. And the "scary" elements were so fucking annoying. There was potentially one good moment where she was on her bike near the beginning where I was ALMOST scared. But as soon as they decided to show what the "scary" thing was. Literally all of the tension just shit the bed man.
Can’t wait to check this one out. Unfortunately I’ve seen the trailer a number of times but the scene where she’s on the bicycle genuinely seems terrifying.
I've had my eye on this one, so, glad to hear it went well - I'll definitely be checking it out. Big fan of Dan Stevens - you can add his fantastic big screen debut in the highly underrated and underseen The Guest. Absolutely awesome in that. Love the Maxxxine tee by the way.
I just saw the movie earlier, but it's one of those movies that makes more sense after you think about what you saw, versus what you were seeing in the very moment. I was in shock at certain parts and in other parts I had NO idea what was going on. The more the story unfolded, the more sense the previous scenes of insanity and eccentricness became. It's definitely one of those movies that you have to think deeply about and really interpret things to get the most out of it in my opinion. With movies nowadays just re-using the same ideas and concepts, seeing something unique and really out in left field like Cuckoo, is something I'm glad to have had the opportunity to go and watch.
You can watch it 100 times … and there’s no getting your head around it! .. it was horseshit apart from the cinematography and a couple acting performances
Curious as to what your favorite movie of the film festival was. I got to say Cuckoo was my favorite horror movie I saw this year so far. I'm a sucker for a unique original story with well written characters and good cinematography and this movie really delivered!

I loved it! I was enraptured in its look & feel. The cinematography had such an old vibe, the pink & blue filters, like a strange lost vintage film newly discovered. I really enjoy the lack of answers. A very well made film for only 7 mill!!! Meanwhile The Acolyte cost 180 mill.
Your negatives described me! After this movie ended, I thought to myself "I have no idea what I just watched and that made zero sense. "It was scary and had some good scares in it. But a swing and a Miss for me!
I am so happy I didn't watch or read any reviews before seeing it myself. Just finished writing my review so I can *finally* watch this. If I had to pick just one word to describe Cuckoo, I'd go with "unexpected". This was not a movie I ever thought would be able to make me cry but it did. Twice. It didn't quite stick the landing at the end in my opinion but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. Between this, Longlegs, Oddity, and Abigail, it has been a damn good year for horror so far.
The thing with leaving things unexplained is to find the right balance. When things can be infered, analysed, discovered on a second viewing or extrapolated to your own conclusion, leaving some things in the dark is totally fine. No one likes to be spoonfed. Where it becomes an annoyance is either where it's left unanswered because you're supposed to have the answers in a sequel, never a good idea unless it's established from the start that there's going to be a part 2 (or 3) and when you don't explain something thinking it makes the experience trancendant or edgy. Trust me, it's not, it's just fucking annoying and frustrating.
I saw the notification for this video had no idea what I’d be getting into and last minute decided to check it out. I’m glad I did it was definitely interesting and I’d see it again!!
Found your channel through Dexter New Blood, most relatable rant I ever found on a show. Mostly all of your review's are relatable your mostly never wrong. Keep up the good work Cody, imma go see this movie👍
We went in blind ( sorta). We were waiting the whole time to understand what was going on, the plot twist or explanation. I don’t remember scares. We were interested but liked Longlegs better. Both not scary but entertaining.
Longlegs was SOO much better! (I loved Longlegs) Both movies bring up the same bird but for Longlegs it is so relevant and actually utilizes the theme during the twist/explanation. This movie to me felt like they just name drop and I couldn’t see how it related that much..
The relationship between the two sisters was great. Can you imagine walking home with your big sister and she stops and pulls a switchblade out of her pocket... gettin' ready to F someone up? 😂Both characters were so cool.
I just finished this movie and thought it was awful. It sure was weird and nothing much made sense, but weirdness and inscrutability dies big a good horror film make. that over the top shootout at the end that last forever was ridiculous.
i didn’t understand the movie when watching, and after reading the explanation, i still don’t think it’s my type of horror. i think when movies start going into science experiments, it loses me. the first half was better, but not by a lot
@Cody again thank you for always giving the good and bad of films you see :) love the short before and after views you do too. Best wishes for a terrific week with your family good Sir
I walked in having no idea what to expect and walked out loving it. Honestly in my top 3 favorite horror films this year. And as you said in general some great scares. Once you know it’s coming god I felt tense and that has not happen in such a long time.
I felt like Dan Stevens played it too broad, and he's not intimidating enough. I kept thinking Christoph Waltz whenever he was on screen, except Waltz would've been PERFECT. Plus the monster wasn't scary enough. Maybe thdy didn't have the budget to do proper effects? "Oddity" is still easily my favorite horror of the year so far.
Your entire comment mirrors my thoughts on the movie. I just got out of it and was not impressed. It was an interesting enough premise, but the delivery felt cheap and forced and was not gloriously unhinged or scary. I also kept seeing body horror thrown around and it didn’t deliver. Super bummed about that because I was looking forward to this one. Furthermore, I’m BAFFLED that Cody didn’t care for Oddity but loved Cuckoo. Oddity was absolutely my favorite scare of 2024 so far.
I watch a lot of your videos and you make such a good case for going into movies blind. 1 minute into this video, I just said fuck it and bought a ticket for tonight so I can see it spoiler free. Cant wait to check out the rest of the video in a few hours!
I've been #TeamNoTrailers for a minute. I saw your thumbnail closed YT, went to the theaters and watched it. It was very good at building suspense. I have unanswered questions but sometimes it's good to be a little mystified IMO I'll always be wondering what happened with about two different plot lines and that also adds rewatchability to a film for me. I hope people give it a chance.
Just watched it last night on Prime, didn’t know what to expect and I was blown away. Horror movies aren’t my thing, and I would qualify this more as a psychological thriller than a horror movie. That said, I went to bed hoping I would dream about this movie, that’s how much I enjoyed it. 10/10
hi Cody i got to apologize mate, i'll come back in a couple of weeks to watch this ( in aus we only got a Very limited screening in two weeks) i'm tryng to go in blind for this film as im super keen. still gotta say loving the overall progression of your reviews over the years mate
I went in 100% blind and thought this was great, agreeing with most of what you said. I think that the lack of the answers to certain questions is absolutely fine here. I feel that it gave me enough. Much like with Alien, I think this works without fully explaining the background to the "threat". In fact, I think some of the explanations we do get towards the end of the movie felt a little bit too on-the-nose and expositiony. For example, I think enough was shown in the movie that they didn't need to explicitly explain the why the movie's called Cuckoo.
When it comes to scares we’re all different the way we receive them, it didn’t scare me but I’ll say this movie has some of the coolest shots on camera for those jump scare I’ve seen.
I am glad to hear from someone else who dug this film as much as I did. This movie implemented shadow, situational threat, and monumental horror well, and there were some nice little chills throughout. By the way, will you do a spoiler review? I want to compare my interpretation with other reviewers.
Sounds great. There’s also an excellent novel out this year with the same title (unrelated). When I first saw the trailer, I thought the book had been adapted already!
Came here to comment after seeing the movie. What a bizarre movie I didn’t love it but I liked it but not enough to be one of my favorites. I really think a rewatch is in need for me to understand this movie. The lady in glasses was definitely the scariest part of the movie but I wasn’t scared compared to the amount of fear I felt during oddity.
I walked in not knowing much and I also walked out not knowing much. Good performances, creepy vibes, but the plot was all over the place and explained very little
The biggest asset this movie has is its awesome and strong atmosphere. The first two acts of this were really cool and creepy, but I gotta say the third act lost me. I see what you're saying about leaving most things up for us to answer ourselves, but I thought they revealed too much for that to work properly...rather than making me ponder it, it just left me feeling annoyed. I'd rather have no answers than have SOME answers without others. The climax with the guns to me was the worst part.
random thought but i noticed the people who liked “Trap” didn’t like “Cuckoo” & the people that didn’t like “Trap” ended up enjoying “Cuckoo”…i don’t know why i’m so intrigued in this lol
I went in very blind, had no idea what it was really about or who was in it. For me, I struggled because the story wasn’t explained well, it was something about a breeding experiment, which oddly I felt was kind of uninteresting. I did find parts a bit freaky, such as the bike/chase scene and the actual aesthetic of the breeding woman, but really I wasn’t scared at all during this one, so I struggle to see what Cody’s saying about best scares of the year. I also tend to disagree on Dan Stevens here; he’s good with accents but I couldn’t get past him in this role, it felt kind of hokey for me. Also you just knew the horror trope of two sisters coming together was going to end up being relevant here. The lead actress was really good. Maybe 7/10 for me. For me Longlegs was much scarier and dread-filled.
super excited for this movie, the trailer was playing in my theater but i wasn’t paying attention to it, i saw a picture of a bike and remembered cody mentioned that and i thought oh shit this is cuckoo, so i got on my phone, i don’t remember a single thing from the trailer and i am glad
Let me tell you, this movie was a disjointed, fragmented mess! I wanted to walk out with about 30 minutes left, but my friend was sleeping, and I didn't want to wake him. This movie was all over the place with so many things never explained. The trailer made it look like a monster movie, but it wasn't. The only decent part was the bike chase we saw in the preview. I don't get the rating; maybe they saw a different movie than I did. Who can make sense of what they saw? So many questions with no answers. And then there's the ending-a confusing mess that feels like the writer got drunk and forgot the plot of the movie halfway through. It doesn't offer any closure or even a good twist. Instead, it leaves you wondering why you wasted your time. In 'Cuckoo,' Tilman Singer tries to make a mind-bending horror movie but ends up with a story so confusing that it feels like he's trying to mess with the audience and Hunter Schafer plays Gretchen, a character who is more annoying than interesting. It's an hour and a half of confusion led by a character you'll wish had been left out. Things that are not scary and are used too much- twitching bodies, heart beating in skin, lady screaming like a dinosaur, wide open mouth villain. This movie feels like your friend showed you two hours' worth of clips that he wants to make a movie with but hasn't started editing yet.
I just watched the movie last night. I left the theater a bit confused. I didn’t understand certain elements of the “lore” until *much* later. Overall I did like it, especially the tension and Hunter Schaefer’s performance, but I’d have to see it again.
I’m surprised anyone thought this film was scary. It started off scary, but it got less and less scary throughout the film.
Agreed. It was bizarre and a couple creepy moments but it wasn’t scary at all, granted what qualifies as scary is going to be subjective.
Agreed Agreed, Lol...Honestly, I Had To Shut It Off With 45 Minutes Left, I Was Super Bored and Couldn't Get Into It.

It's shaping up to be a pretty good year for horror
Let´s go Alien: Romulus !
@@CZJames20and Art clause is on the way 🤣🤣🤣🔥🔥🩸🩸
Found your channel through Dexter New Blood, most relatable rant I ever found on a show.
This is my favorite horror flick of the year so far. So weird and most importantly felt ORIGINAL and wasn’t afraid to take risks with its story.
Cant wait to see this!! Hopefully its uploaded on my firestick this wknd🙏🙏🙏
Seeing it at 7!
I hope Cuckoo gets released here in my place. I got lucky to see Longlegs, so I’m also crossing my fingers to see Cuckoo in my local theater.
Despite trolls on Social Media, I think you are having a heck of a 2024, Cody!
Awesome! Which other movies this year had great scares?
Cuckoo for horror puffs?
NEON is dominating horror this year with Immaculate, Longlegs & Cuckoo!
Longlegs was so bad imo
100% my favorite horror film of 2024 thus far.👏🏼
This has been one of the absolute best years for horror in a long time.
Oddity is better than Cuckoo IMO
Indeed fuck trailers. Really good but not knowing that bike would have been better
Exactly! It's a 4/5 star for me, but it would have been that full 5 if Neon didn't fuck the marketing up
hi Cody i got to apologize mate, i'll come back in a couple of weeks to watch this ( in aus we only got a Very limited screening in two weeks) i'm tryng to go in blind for this film as im super keen. still gotta say loving the overall progression of your reviews over the years mate
God the atmosphere this movie delivers is amazing from start to finish. I can't wait to rewatch it.
When it comes to scares we’re all different the way we receive them, it didn’t scare me but I’ll say this movie has some of the coolest shots on camera for those jump scare I’ve seen.
The third act unravelled all the good work it put in place for act 1 and 2. Dont explain everything!
I've loved the creepiness Dan Steven's can bring since I saw him in an awesome film called The Guest.
Thanks!
Thank you!
😂😂😂 interesting because I liked Trap & did not like Cuckoo at all 🤭
I think they both sucked
Where did u get that shirt
I thought we would be on the same boat with this one Cody given the other reviews I’ve watched of yours.
It was a tough watch for me.
Very confusing
Looking forward to this one. Saw the trailer before Long Legs and said, yep, seeing that.
Saw this preview before Longlegs wasn't sure what I thought but I think you may have sold me on checking it out
Hey Cody! Thoughts on making any horror anthology related videos?
THAAANK you
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
You are spot on. This movie doesn't explain anything it shows
I liked this comment more than the actual review
I'm a fan of all the actors involved here. But gotta say. The thing that sold me on this movie has been all the stuff I have seen on this channel. 💎
SEEING IT TONIGHT!!!
He'll yeah. Let us know your thoughts!
@@kellyaustin7487 it was fuckin great
Good horror mystery with a great cast. Dan Stevens is truly delightful.
I just watched Luz! Im looking forward to checking this film out!
I just watched the movie last night. I left the theater a bit confused. I didn’t understand certain elements of the “lore” until *much* later. Overall I did like it, especially the tension and Hunter Schaefer’s performance, but I’d have to see it again.
