The scene where Elizabeth keeps going back to fix her hair and makeup, hide parts of her body and eventually feel too ugly to go on her date to just stay home and feel depressed hit me so hard because I have been there before! I've felt this insecurity many times in my life and have cancelled plans because I felt too ugly.
I like to believe that if Elizabeth didn't allow her insecurities to get the better of her, the date she went on would show her that they are people who care about her, warts and all. She would canceled the substance subscription and tell her sleezy former boss and the industry as a whole to stick it where the sun doesn't shine.
@@alienboy1322yeah this movie made me think.. cause I’ve seen a lot of girls feel like old hags at age 25 cause they see posts online from men or the redpill community like Andrew Tate stuff, and they feel insecure about themselves. Cause in the movie Dennis Quad says that a woman’s fertility stops at age 25 I think that’s what he said lol. So it just resonated cause I’ve seen some girls say that on forums online or like reddit posts where their like 23 yrs old, and feel like they aren’t good enough or their time is up. Which is sad.. Such a beautifully shot flick. The gore was great also. It jumped the shark a bit in the end, but it was awesome. The plot could be an allegory for so many topics in which the inconsistencies doesn't matter for that is not the point. One of the best horror flicks in years.
Demi Moore absolutely knocks this role out of the park. She is amazing and I feel her skills as an actress and her own relationship with Hollywood made her a perfect fit for this role. Any other actress could not have sold Elisabeth Sparkle or the raw message of this story. Thank you, Demi Moore! Thank you!!
@NickElliott-dv8vn the way the gore was stylized and the prosthetics, yes. I felt it kinda shared that with Braindead. And kinda similar in the way the blood let's loose. Obviously minus the lawnmower.
What’s ironic is that this movie shows how Hollywood lately tries so hard to achieve “realism” that it still comes off as false reality while the absurdity of this movie is 20x more entertaining than the average mainstream Hollywood production. Even how absurd and unrealistic this movie was, the plot line and overall story was the main superstar. Moore and Qualley with the support of Quaid’s characters were a perfect storm for such a unique and intriguing masterpiece. Of course, it took a French writer to expose an observation of American satire to pull it off. And I’m all here for it!
I have to mention the sound design because I think it was some of the best sound mixing and editing I've ever seen and heard in a film! The sounds of gore, body horror! The food scenes made me want to throw up! The music that plays for Sue felt so pornographic and high intensity, the music references to body horror films in the past! The camera angles and shots were so perfect too, again the difference between the shots of Elizabeth, being more natural, then sue having the over the top male gaze angles. This film was such an assault on my senses in the best way too.
@@tonyrodrigues9425 yeah the trailer was great! It didn't give too much away and showed what they needed to show. I would love to find some of the music from the score
Just saw it in the theater and woooow I get all the hype now🤩 my favorite moment was, when she tries to terminate Sue but then symbolicly holds her youth and tells it to stay with her cause it's the only part she loves about herself😢😢
Just saw this movie tonight. I didn’t know anything about it until today actually, so I went in blind and it was absolutely phenomenal. I cannot stop thinking of it.
I read somewhere that Dennis Quaid’s character was originally going to be played by Ray Liotta, but he passed before filming began. So it’s cool to hear how awesome Quaid is in the movie. I wanna see it, but I’m scared. Body horror is something I watch, but while also looking away lol.
Dennis Quaid had me in stitches every time he rocked up on screen. Interestingly Ray Liotta was originally cast in that role and Quaid was only cast after he passed away.

I haven't been all that interested in watching this movie from what little I've seen/heard, but now I am. The way you describe it...this might actually be right up my alley. Added to the list now!
In school now, so haven’t checked out this video yet, but I have been waiting to hear your thoughts on this crazy movie! Anyways, here is a tier list idea: Body Horror Movies
I've seen the film twice in theaters; first time was by myself and I had an absolute blast watching it, I went back again with an audience and got to experience their reactions to it. This is easily the most excited that I've been about a brand new horror movie in a long time, and I hope that Mubi releases a 4K Bluray, because I will buy it!🖤🔥🔥
Knew nothing really about it. Didn’t watch the trailer. I just remember seeing the poster of Demi’s back sewn up and was like “I’M IN”. Saw this in the best possible way. In a sold out 7 PM screening on discount day. Everyone was having all types of reactions. A woman next to me was gagging in certain scenes. The final 10-15 minutes had me laughing my ass off and applauding at what I was seeing because I just couldn’t believe how far they took this. It’s a lil bit too long but at the same time I can’t think of anything to possibly take out to shorten the runtime. Demi Moore’s best, Margaret Qualley is great, Dennis Quaid is really good (Ray Liotta originally was cast before he passed and there’s scenes where I thought Dennis sounded exactly like him). After it was over I ignited a slow clap 😂. I really liked “Revenge” but this one absolutely puts Coralie Fargeat on the map. I really hope she specifically gets attention for best original screenplay. 5/5
I was shocked by this film. Didn't exactly know what to expect and it was better than I thought. I also felt for Elizabeth in the end.. when she was getting ready for the date. It's so relatable and it's sad. A great body horror and another added to my favorite list. I'd personally watch it over and over.. within being in that sort of mood.
I saw this twice within a two week period and am already planning to show it to everyone I know. Not the same as just throwing it on when I’m home by myself but I do think the experience (and showing it to new people) makes for a highly rewatchable movie. Great review btw!
Thats what I love about this LMAO. We all think we know where that final 20 minutes starts and then the film just keeps going. We are all told about the insane final 20 minutes, but we are never actually prepared for it haha.
This movie was outstanding in my opinion. That ending with her on stage pleading to the audience was really sad but the grossest scene was dennis quad eating the seafood. BTW, I'm shocked this guy doesn't have over a million subs. N
12:40 Thank you for bringing Ari Aster into the conversation - the last horror movie that had a remotely comparable effect on me was Midsommar. I loved this! Great review. ❤
3:45. Gave me those tales from the crypt vibes! The ones that won emmies- that have a lesson, or meaning within meaning! And just like those, needed a walk to process
Thank you, Cody. Unfortunately for me I ACCIDENTALLY saw a review that was full of spoilers. I still want to see it, though. This movie LOOKS PAINFUL. I won’t say too much, I don’t want to ruin it for people who want to see it “cold”. I will say this… I think this film should be MANDATORY for young people, I mean high school getting ready for college. I say this because society has a baseline now that plastic surgery, botox, fillers, lip injections, liposuction is JUST A PART OF LIFE. This movie is a cautionary tale, FULL STOP. Anyway, thanks for the hard work, I am sorry I didn’t get here sooner. Have a good one, you are appreciated and I hit the like button as per usual.
One of the best scenes was Sue thinking she had been suddenly cancelled to find out she’s moving up in the entertainment world; makes me think actual actors and performers are subject to the capriciousness of ratings and management in an unfair, tumultuous kind of way. This same plot point raises the issue of not being able to stick to the substance’s rules, which ratchets up the tension.
I loved the dual nature of the character development in this film. Elisabeth was her own worst enemy as Sue, but she was also Sue’s only empathizer. She was like, “I get it. Youth and beauty is currency and you gotta spend it while you have it. You don’t want to waste it so 7 days is short for you, while I hate being old so 7 days is an eternity for me.” The best scene for me was when Sue runs into Dennis Quaid and a bunch of dudes in a hallway and she’s crying. None of them ask her how she is doing, they admit they hunted her down to make sure she was smiling, “Show us your smile, you should always be smiling.” 😑 This movie. I wasn’t ready for it.
14:25 If hanging out with friends and 1 or 2 haven't seen this:? It joins Mr. Brooks/Frailty/Fight Club/A History of Violence/Requiem for a Dream. movies you don't watch too often but suggest if 1 or more haven't with these movies!
What a great ride! Never felt so shocked, repulsed and in awe since watching the dog scene from The Thing for the first time. But I'm afraid Academy won't have enough balls to give Demi Moore a nom. They ignored Hereditary and Toni Colette's turn winch was almost tame in comparison with The Substance.
I was waiting for this! I'm so happy you watched it! I haven't finished what's on my current movie watchlist, and still have many films to go, but oh my god, I walked into this blind and yeah, favorite film of 2024 so far.
Been waiting for this since the first trailer came out, saw everyone talking about it hyping it up, i thought I would love it but didn’t expect to be surprised. I really thought I had the story pegged but no wow, definitely took me on a RIDE, kept going in more insane directions. Phenomenal movie
Watched it 3 times in 3 days. One of the best films ever made. An incredibly disturbing cautionary tale on what happens when you base your entire identity on your looks. Every young woman should watch this film.
This movie had my stomach churning and that is not hyperbole. I don't claim to have a weak stomach, but there were some scenes where i had to pause the film, run to the bathroom, brush my teeth, wash my face and take a deep breath......it's that gnarly. A great film, but a film that will unfortunately live rent free in my memory bank for a while before i go back to it. Just wow.......
I love this movie. Demi Moore is awesome. Margret Quayle is great. Randy Quad playing a Harvey Weinstein lite character is great. I love everything about this movie even the third act.

The trailers were edited good too
@@tonyrodrigues9425 yeah the trailer was great!
I can't stop thinking about the film since I watched it. Everyone if you're still on the fence about go watch it. I was blown away!
Found you through the terrifier 3 review as I am a major fan of the franchise. Now I'm here, binging your videos...😂
This movie sounds like the true story of some Hollywood Celebs...IYKYK
A substance beginning with A?
This movie was better than I expected
The review we’ve all been waiting for!
Clicked almost as quick as when I seen Terrifier 3 review!
Girl it’s gross as hell
Dennis Quaid had me in stitches every time he rocked up on screen. Interestingly Ray Liotta was originally cast in that role and Quaid was only cast after he passed away.
@Cody Tho not a film for me (gore), you remain one of my favorite channels for always calling it as YOU see it, and being critical but fair in all your reviews. Have a lovely weekend with your family and friends
5:30 She was in Mr. Brooks! that awesome thriller/horror with Kevin Costner and William Hurt!?!
Seriously underrated film. Costner is surprisingly great as a serial killer.
That is one of my all time favorite Kevin Costner films.
Got to be honest bro I’ve been having a great sleep at night and it’s been listening to you penguinz0 and me ballen, but your channel keeps me out of having sleep paralysis every night it’s such a joy to listen to! Thank you I know you’ll have more praise overtime, your analysis over movies is amazing! Thank you
Mr ballin*
I appreciate that
I think Catherine zeta jones kinda replaced demi come to think of it…i thought both demi and the actress that played sue were so fun to watch. Demi did so much with so little dialogue in the first act
Ugh you have no idea how happy this review makes me. I have a huge smile on
I haven't been all that interested in watching this movie from what little I've seen/heard, but now I am. The way you describe it...this might actually be right up my alley. Added to the list now!
In school now, so haven’t checked out this video yet, but I have been waiting to hear your thoughts on this crazy movie!
Anyways, here is a tier list idea: Body Horror Movies
pump it up, you gotta pump it up!!
I described this as the Barbie script written on acid, directed by Cronenberg.
This movie was absolutely nuts, but I don't know if I'll watch it again, maybe with someone who hasn't seen it, to see their reaction.
Awesome review bro. You killed it.
I literally saw this movie and immediately started looking for your review on it. I knew you'd dig this one for sure.
This is literally your best review ever. Your passion absolutely authentic and passionate. You always are but this was extra.
One of my biggest surprises of the year. Absolutely loved this
You know you’re the only film reviewer on here I was waitinggggg for a review on this movie! I LOVE it
I saw this twice within a two week period and am already planning to show it to everyone I know.
Seeing this movie tonight can’t wait!!!!!
I promise you won’t regret it it’s a unforgettable masterpiece and my new favorite movie!!!!
Seeing all the turkey and thanksgiving food was nuts
The drumstick scene😅
This movie was outstanding in my opinion. That ending with her on stage pleading to the audience was really sad but the grossest scene was dennis quad eating the seafood. BTW, I'm shocked this guy doesn't have over a million subs. N
12:40 Thank you for bringing Ari Aster into the conversation - the last horror movie that had a remotely comparable effect on me was Midsommar. I loved this! Great review. ❤
Seeing Cody with Sean's background feels intruding
This is definitely a film to see in a full screening, seeing other people cringe and wince became just as enjoyable as the movie itself
I've SOOOOO have been waiting for your review on this one!!!!
This movie has substan--wait...
I love the nuance you bring to your reviews. Can't wait to see this movie!
Also, unrelated, bu you should do a video on Rudderless. 😊
Lol I don't know why it took me so long to realize that this is like doctor Jekyll and mister Hyde! Which I absolutely love
The Substance vs The Stuff. The crossover we need.
14:25 If hanging out with friends and 1 or 2 haven't seen this:? It joins Mr. Brooks/Frailty/Fight Club/A History of Violence/Requiem for a Dream. movies you don't watch too often but suggest if 1 or more haven't with these movies!
Tbh Cody this movie took me by surprise my jaw dropped to the floor I mean wow I think this is the craziest movie I’ve seen in my entire life
What a great ride!
A couple people at my screening looked back at me and said well that certainly wasn't boring 😂
Watched it 3 times in 3 days. One of the best films ever made. An incredibly disturbing cautionary tale on what happens when you base your entire identity on your looks. Every young woman should watch this film.
I emphatically SECOND every bit of praise you gave to this movie!
Can't wait to see this - but I'd want a home/streaming release, so I can pause, rewind, take a break... (!).
Thank you for this. I knew,..wait...WE KNEW U WOULD LOVE THIS. 2024 SURPRISE
Cody's the only horror reviewer i trust
Definitely one of my favorite movies of the year. The score, music, the shots, the acting was all top notch
I love this movie. Demi Moore is awesome. Margret Quayle is great. Randy Quad playing a Harvey Weinstein lite character is great. I love everything about this movie even the third act.
omg i cant wait for this for longtime… since revenge i wanted new movie from her and after some festivals reviews i cant wait…10more days.. i need it now.. fantastic review btw 😊
One of the best films of the year, no doubt. What I didn’t expect was how the OTT batsh*t crazy final act was a jarring reminder for me that Starry Eyes is truly my favorite body horror movie.
You should do a "Top 10 Horror movies Set in the Suburbs". For those nostalgic fall/Halloween vibes.
I loved this film
Fun fact the thumbnail quote you used is the same thing that I started off my Letterbox review with
Demi Moore is such a STAR. I need to check out more of her work.
I guess I'm seeing this tomorrow.
How did it go?
Was only looking yesterday to see if you'd reviewed it yet. Nice work 👏
