and we saw that paimon can create visual illusions, ie. making Annie see a disdainful sneer on Peter's face to sow discord between them. these indirect visions of Ellen, as a ghostly vision in the dark or a figure with her back turned in the distance might just as well be created by paimon, while the actual soul of Ellen is already on her second dunk in the river of magma

Your Hereditary vid is one of the most well reasearched and interesting movie analysis I've ever seen and it really made me appreciate the movie in a deeper way
It's interesting how popular fiction rarely covers the "what happens next". What happens when a celestial demon is successfully summoned into the material world? In movies and books it's usually "evil harry potter" clown fiesta, instant hellfire apocalypse or Superheroes fighting horned devils. There's a recent Argentine movie called "When Evil Lurks" that tries to tackle this. It paints a dystopian and almost mundane "what happens next" aftermath. Evil has won somewhen and somewhere on Earth, humans globally just live on and try to push away the weirdness and primordial evilness on a day to day basis, until it comes and gets them.
@@everforward5561 for real, if demons get to escape hell there's every chance in the world that they'll just start sitting on grassy hillocks like "holy shit this is nice"
That's probably what would happen. Not some 'this is the end' hell on earth with explosions and demons and the ground splitting open, but just life getting progressively worse, and it just starts with 'hmm this is strange, but oh well' ignoring it, to 'well this is fine, this is the new normal' denial, to acceptance after the fact- this sucks but life goes on, we'll do what we have to do to get by' until that is, we've been annihilated. We saw it coming in the sense that all the signs were there, but we refused to see it while it was happening and will only recognize it in the aftermath when it's too late. I think that's what IS happening right now, actually, just not because of demons, just our own doings.
I thought the last Hellboy was gonna go there. We saw hell break loose and release its Boschian horrors. Then 5 minutes later, they are getting sucked up and all the devastation is repaired like nothing happened
0:25: “what happened next?” What happened next is that Paimon snapped the necks of everyone in that treehouse for putting him in a girl’s body to begin with.
You've honestly ruined me for all other video essayists' movie and show analyses. Everyone else's just feel so shallow and surface level now!! I don't want a simple plot rehash, u go so above and beyond and ur hard work does not go unnoticed 🙏
I would recommend "flawed peacock" then! He does great breakdowns that go moment by moment with research and, occasionally, interviews with the creators.
I can imagine hell is like the oppressive dinner scene from the movie, where the Grahams all try to talk in circles about their own feelings but no one listens to what the others are saying. And Paimon is the smug asshole ‘sitcom dad’ type who interjects with quips, and the lesser demons are the laugh track that agrees with him. That is to say; hell is all of them being unable to break from their cycles and connect genuinely to each other. Even if they technically live in a situation of material abundance. Great video! I hadn’t stopped to think about what would happen next for any of the characters. Good luck on your research!
It is, for sure, although I guess she isn’t really his mother. That being said in the guide I do mention that this could be him feeling a kinship with Annie’s misery given his own miserable state. But yeah I think the more traditional view is that he simply feels kinship with negative emotion.
The fascinating thing to me about this film is it never shows you hell. It just leaves you to assume there's this insane Wayne Barlowe-esque world of demonic hierarchies and probably some kind of ordered society to it all and that is something I could ponder forever. But not a realm of fire and chaos and torture as much as just an ethereal realm of the most unscrupulous beings to ever exist.
It’s probably extremely boring. That’s where the phrase “bored as hell” originated from, you know. Luke said that in one of the psalms, if I recall correctly.
If we're buying into the christian canon/logical conclusions demons are just one or two steps removed from humans. God didn't make a whole lot of stuff as far as we know, and we know how similar humans are to angels, so it stands to reason that demons - who may or may not just be the heavenly hosts that fell with Lucifer - are pretty much the same as us, just with more cartoonishly exaggerated sin-based personalities. Maybe humans have always been making deals with devils because they're so similar to us in psychology. That being said, I don't remember anything in the Bible actually saying that God created demons, so Hell may be populated by things outside of God's plan.
I look like it more like a crazy person who is convinced their shopping cart full of garbage is art supplies. The fallen angels got a raw deal based on the story and I'd feel pity for them if they weren't such raging a$$holes trying to get back at god by torturing us collectively. Clearly God only likes us if we bow, and just like demons, for our own reasons, many of us will NOT bow. You'd think they would put aside that grudge as we had just as much say in the fall as they did. (Omnipotence, God knew before he even made them what was gonna go down)
@@silencedogood8800 never forget that the winners write the history books. We have no way of knowing if Lucifer and the fallen angels were sticking up for us.
I can't help but wonder whether there is an "in-between" option for what happens to the Grahams - perhaps Ellen was both right and wrong. Her peaceful demeanor when she appears to Annie, and later in the field, seem to imply that wherever she is, she's completely fine and looking forward to seeing the rest of the ritual move forward. However if we are to believe that Charlie really did speak through Annie and is very afraid, perhaps that is to mean that Ellen's family does not receive the same rewards in Pandemonium that she received. In other words, the rewards for the sacrifices are paid ONLY to Ellen and not to the rest of her family. The rest of the family suffers, and that is part of Paimon's tricksterly nature. Amazing video, as always!
Makes sense, Satanism is primarily centered around serving the self. For one to lie, cheat, manipulate, and sacrifice one's family for a big reward would seem like a natural course of action for someone like Ellen.
So excited about the VVitch video, I've loved the movie for years and I'm excited to hear your insights about it. Congrats for a million views on the Hereditary vid, it's well deserved! ❤️
One of the main horrific attributes of Hereditary in my opinion is that we don’t get closure on what happens with the cult or Peter. A sequel would honestly just ruin that horrific ending. Although a prequel would probably be interesting
Also P going after the weakest host makes the pecking off order of the family make sense. -Charlie had the spirit, so her death was required. It was made traumatic, however, to harm the family/Peters spirit. By making him at fault, it separated him from his parents, he couldn’t properly grieve alongside them bc he and his mom both blamed each other. - Dad was too strong willed and not part of the bloodline, so kill him traumatically and finish off Annie’s willpowe. -use Annie like a puppet to scare the shit out of Peter and finish him off, then collect the body for Paimons use
I absolutely love your Hereditary video, I watch both it and the Midsommar one when I'm going to sleep. I love waking up to a random part I forgot about and get to experience it all over again!
18:45 one huge problem with the apparitions looking calm and OK. Paimon can lie to his hearts content and if he has control over you enough to make you smash your face in, he can certainly make you look calm with suffering unimaginable pain. Notes? Easy to write lies. So, yeah. You also keep saying he’s got a plan. Think he’s going to throw a wrench into his plans that has lasted generations just to get a quick chuckle?
My head canon (coping mechanism) is that they are all forgiving for their ignorance and ascend to heaven where they get to be with all the dogs and the brother and father. The grandma and the cult are tricked and tortured for this rest of their lives because I got very attached to the Graham family and can't handle any other outcome. I know I'm Delulu but allow me this.
Your point is likeable: I like to believe God understands the sick, Peter’s mental health eventually deteriorates and has no control over the situation, Charlie died on accident, his dad - just wanting the best and serves as mediator for the family and is the symbol of resilience, the Mother struggling with grief and ignorance… they know not what they do. So I believe they got into Heaven.. or their peaceful eternal rest.
@@Novum_YTCan’t wait. On it. But just wanted to say that what you do is truly amazing. I remember the first thing I thought when I saw Hereditary was ‘What happened after?’ I’d love to see your analysis of Ti West’s trilogy with Mia Goth. One lives in hope. Thank you again ❤️🙏🏻
I loooove your complete guide on Hereditary and Midsummer, i watched them seberal times (yes.) and use them to put me to sleep. They're so well documented, so well written, so nice to listen to... I cant wait for your VVitch video!!! Im so happy i found you channel!!
I cannot believe you didn't realise "Beau Is Afraid" is actually a direct sequel to "Hereditary" and shows what become of earth after Paimon and Hell descended on it. Obviously.
Two notes. 1) Hell is sometimes described not as a place of torture and fire but simply as being removed from God's light. That's it. 2) Devils are often said to be required to keep thier bargains, now they do often twist them. Much like a Genie you have to make your bargain very carefully.
Yeah, absolutely with you there. And certainly Pandemonium is described as an extremely opulent, extravagant place. It’s not really what people expect it to be, that’s actually why I used artwork directly of Paradise Lost/Pandemonium, because it really isn’t what people usually expect in that it has architecture, societal structure etc. You may already be aware but interesting fact, it’s also really tiny and everyone gets shrunk down to enter, which I think is kind of a SF device to explain how the demons were able to build it all so quickly!
A wild thought I had was: what if Peter at the end is just Peter? What if all of what had happened did not lead to the spirit possessing the boy and during the final scene we see a boy in pure shock who doesn't know what to do when people literally kneel before him, after he had experienced something beyond human comprehension? Maybe I'm missing some *concrete* evidence it's actually the demon, so this thought is just a "what if" scenario, but imagine how different the film would be received if it ended with a failure of the cult.
This is definitely an original take, and it would certainly be horrifying. I think the evidence towards his possession is seeing the blue light/Paimon soul enter Peter and Joan outright addressing him as Paimon, but that wouldn’t break your theory if you’re saying the cult are mistaken over their successful installing of Paimon. Either way it certainly speaks to the horror that Charlie went through of people not being able to tell she wasn’t there anymore!
This was my interpretation personally but I also recognize that’s not likely the truth of the movie. The confusion at the end of Peter in the tree house give me a vibe of maybe the cult was somehow just a cult based on mythology that aren’t real. I thought it was a fun thought and more unique for me to see this as ‘religious extremists who murdered many people were just crazy and now wtf does he do 😂 there’s plenty of evidence in the film against that but that was my first personal thought and I think it’s fun to think of that way.
Your insight is appreciated. I always find it fascinating that there are other channels like yours that take a deep dive into a film that reveals layers I never saw. Very well done and you're a smart guy.
Can't wait to see the new vid! And I would love it if short follow-up videos like this in between bigger ones became the norm for this channel but I can understand if you don't have the bandwidth for it (or anything left to talk about after most of those massive deep dives lol). But I will be here anxiously awaiting whatever you drop 🍿
Ooo that’s an even better layer, makes it scarier that even the ppl being scary are also victims and the true monster isn’t seen at all/technically seen at the end
My first thought was that someone would likely report Annie and Steve missing and there would be a wellness check, so afterward Peter/Paimon would have fled becoming a wanted suspect for murder lol also LOVE the use of Queen Ravenna from Snow White and the Huntsman with Toni Collette’s face 🤣
Think about this - car crashes, decapitating a teen girl - and there is not a mention of any authorities involved, no police, no nothing? I remember that, on my first viewing, I thought that was a big "plot weak spot", until I saw the ending. Then I realized - the cult has already infiltrated almost everything in that town, there is no one to question what is going on, because everybody who could do something about it, are already on it.
I know many people have already written this, but your videos, especially the one on Midsommar, are so well researched, the pacing of the narration so good, the information is easily assimilable, the depth to which you go on the nuanced parts of the writing and direction and videography, so well done. I watched the whole 7 h video and now I am hooked and I have been watching the other ones too. It's amazing, and I am so in awe of these videos. Your soothing voice also helps, and the cadence and the humour thrown in here and there is also fantastic. You are doing something you are extremely talented at!
I think Charlie and the dad, maybe even Peter are all in heaven or purgatory. I’d like to see more of the story, possibly other kings making their way out of hell.

This is the exact question I asked at the end of the movie and it instantly undid all fear I had from the movie. And I mean IMMEDIATELY after. Like, imagine them finishing chanting, all just awkwardly standing around naked with Paimon and then being like “So… y’all wanna get McDonalds or something?” Ofc I still think the movie is scary, its just a humorous comfort for me at the end of the movie after all the terror and distress that preceded it.
I left the theater saying "well, at least he's going to ace his SATs!" (Paimon teaches all arts, sciences and secrets) and I've wanted a Paimon goes to college movie ever since.
LET'S GO MORE HEREDITARY ANALYSIS!!! The original video is already a huge favorite of mine that I've rewatched at least a dozen times since I first found it! It's so thorough and your work is so wonderfully researched.
So... If Charlie wasn't really there until the moment she was summoned, how did she talk? I mean is there some kind of kindergarten in hell? She had no time to start seeing properly as an infant before she was replaced with Paimon, but in the scene of ritual she somehow speaks and knows what "mom", "dad" and "afraid" is
That's kind of what I thought-- that the real Charlie would have been an infant, the spectral Charlie was just more demonic tricks on the family. I wonder if the real spirit of Charlie, having been an innocent babe when her body was given to a demon for possession, was spared all this and was taken into some kind of Heaven or Purgatoy.
@@positivelysimful1283 nope, unbaptized children go straigth to hell as they are carriers of the original sin, that is why in past times people rushed to get batptism for their children, in fear that they'd die and go to hell
Really it all depends on whether God is real and benevolent in this universe too. If so, it seems likely that the child's voice *wasn't* the real Charlie. Charlie was an unborn baby when displaced - she wouldn't be in hell. Even in the worst versions of the afterlife she'd at most be in the limbo of unbaptised babies, and not under Paimon's control or command.
Many Christian traditions hold that the dead absolutely cannot speak to us. The reason I bring up Christianity is that the cult straight up says “We reject the trinity,” so it is relevant to the movie. I have heard pastors and such say if any of the dead appear to us, it is a trick. Once the dead cross over, they do not cross back. I don’t now what the film goes with, in the case of the voice of Charlie, but it would track that it would be another trick.
Weird shit happens around my home every time I listen to things about apple pie man. I watched your guide before I ever watched the movie & it all started then. I’ve had many many paranormal experiences in my home since I moved in 2018 but my home goes haywire when I listen about this movie & the 2 times I watched it on my phone & then big screen. As soon as you finished your video lights in my living room started fluttering (common, no biggie) but then I walked in the kitchen & the lights went out by themselves in my kitchen. Then my cats got all anxious & the flame on my gas stove started growing bigger & smaller. Could be due to the power grid (probably is). Just think it’s so interesting that it happens extra when I listen to stuff about the movie & dark king associated with it
Not to be this crazy person, and no offense meant, but if you're at all religious or Christian, praying, reading the Bible, and having a crucifix could help put an end to the weird experiences. I've had some minor things and believe it relates to similar dark material/media, and doing those things helped a lot. God bless you. 🙏 This is still one of my top favorite horror films, though. Edit to add my cat has been like an alarm for some stuff, so keep an eye on yours. If none of this bothers you, cool, but probably best not to do anything to encourage it. ✌
I would imagine there are two hundred cultists who will or are hosts to two hundred legion of demons. A single host can hold a legion. Paimon gets his own.
I’m thinking, if we want to lend more credence to the “Ellen was right” option, maybe the reason Charlie was so confused and scared is because she *was* being tormented and treated as an average human soul in hell would, but then Ellen became married to Paimon and her position in the hierarchy changed. I imagine she and Paimon in Hell likely don’t have the best rapport in this post-marriage situation, since he likely would hold resentment for being trapped in her body, so when Paimon gives her the wheel so to speak during the seance, it is once again something that is disorienting for her to experience, hence panic and confusion, and Paimon is fine making her suffer because he views her as lesser, even if she is technically above station in comparison to the standard human soul.
I am so glad that I found your channel, since you cover so many films I love in such great detail! I am a fan of Studio A24 and the movies by Alex Garland and Robert Eggers. Since I watched Vanilla Sky in 2001 I have a thing for deciphering films and I enjoy finding hidden meanings, references and symbolism in them through many rewatches. Your videos are like chests full of treasures that make me rewatch these movies again and inspire my own interpretation of that films. Keep up the outstanding work! 👏
I was really happy to hear you were making another video on Hereidtary, and as usual you delivered, All of the theories were really interesting, and maybe Paimon/Peter will end up running for president? And a slight tangent, thank you for making Hereditary Midsommar and Alien my top 3 favorite films because of your videos, opened a completely new door to my viewing of any film, if it weren’t for me stumbling across your midsommar video my answer for the “what is your favorite film” question would be much different, LOL
I appreciate all your hardwork and dedication, the weeks and months of research you put into making great content. Especially the 4-hour video you did explaining the whole hereditary timeline with Ellen's family, the occult, and Paiman. Thank you
I also think it’s worth noting that Peter looks the age where he’ll be finishing school/moving away in the near future, it makes me wonder if the grandma actually killed herself to start the process before he could escape the cults grasp by going to NYU or something. Unless I’m remembering wrong, Annie was caught off guard by the suddenness of her mothers death, but all the cult members seemed to be on the same page about it
I believe the Grahams went to heaven. Decapitations, burnings, self sacrifice (if you could say that). And why show the gruesome deaths? The demon toys with the body because it can't have the soul. All very symbolic. Only the grandma went to hell because she's the "ride or die bad bitch" lol
Personally I always wondered if the familiars were as good as promised or paimon just gave them some decent but ultimately disappointing familiars instead.
This got me thinking…I’m really curious on your opinion or more like an analysis on Bo is Afraid, since Ari admitted the public didn’t understand the movie at all, and that’s the reason behind the mixed reviews. I can believe this, based on the complexity hidden in the hereditary and midosmar, and the only surface understanding of these by the general audience.
If Hereditary 2 were to be made, I’d love to see it focus more on the cult itself. It would be cool to learn more about the powers and knowledge they gain, but also the costs associated with these things and the loss of self in the process
I freaking love your EVERYTHING explained videos. Have you thought about doing a deep dive into Suspiria? I don’t necessarily know how nuanced the film making is - but there’s DEFINITELY some weird witchy lore AND Berlin in the 70s to dive into
You know what? Just for you I uploaded a 3 hour commentary on Suspiria to my Patreon about 7 hours before you made this comment. That's how much I care!
Demons don’t help people, they either disguise themselves as humans to deceive or reveal their true, menacing nature. But God is always stronger and ever watchful. So, the ending doesn’t mean the family is condemned or destined for hell because of the grandmother’s actions. Heaven may still intervene.
recently i've been getting really into beetlejuice (the movies, cartoon, AND musical) and i had a moment of realization that the miniature setup in the attic in that movie is used sort of similarly as the miniatures in hereditary, though they're obviously extremely different movies. the original beetlejuice has taken a while to grow on me but making that connection made me like it more. the difference is that the family in hereditary is metaphorically trapped in the miniature dioramas, meanwhile beetlejuice is LITERALLY inside the diorama. so anyway what hereditary is missing is a scene where annie finds a little miniature paimon living inside her miniatures. this is all kind of unrelated to the video but i really want to know if other hereditary fans have ever made this connection
Something I always wondered, why was Ellen’s handwritten note not in cursive?? lol, I know! That’s weird! But I’ve never seen an elder who didn’t write in cursive and very beautifully 😂 As always! Looove ur vids!!
Rather than Paimon being confused and befuddled in Peter's body and slowly acclimating to it, l was under the impression that it was instead actually Peter that was confused, trying to adjust to the shock of now literally and irrevocably sharing both his body and his consciousness with a demon.
I have to assume Steve gets the short end of the stick considering Ellen never liked him, and that you could argue he’s not of the bloodline even if he is Charlie and Peter’s father. Moreover, considering that Charlie wasn’t the intended vessel, she may also be ‘left out of the bargain’ so to speak. Or, maybe her reward isn’t realized until the deal fully is. It’s easier for me to imagine Annie and Peter being treated well, but there’s also the possibility that only Ellen is given royal status. Regardless I think Steve’s gonna get the sex furniture treatment. Poor guy.
I actually saw the end of the movie as the beginning of the end of the world. Basically Ellen was able to get a king of hell into her world, That’s why “liftoach” was used, it’s the beginning of all the kings coming to our world and, in my head, it should be easier to get the other kings with Paimon working on the other side. Ellen’s sacrifice was able to actually open the door to pandemonium. That’s why I also feel like her and her family will be treated as “royalty” since it was Ellen who made it possible for one king to posses someone and possibly made it easier for the other kings as well, she is a queen of hell.
As I heard it once, the nature of Hell isn't (just) bodily torture, but a separation from the love and acceptance of God; so even in ruling Hell, one would lack fulfillment.
Hail Paimon?

That is to say; hell is all of them being unable to break from their cycles and connect genuinely to each other. Even if they technically live in a situation of material abundance.
Great video! I hadn’t stopped to think about what would happen next for any of the characters. Good luck on your research!

Drawing a mocking caricature of your mother while she crying is hilariously cruel, now that you mention it
It is, for sure, although I guess she isn’t really his mother.
"and a ride or die bad bitch for a queen" novum just keeps writing banger after banger
I always figured that the motivations of an entity like this would be so alien as to be beyond understanding.
(Omnipotence, God knew before he even made them what was gonna go down)
Right, like some Hellraiser pain is pleasure type sh*t

That's exactly what I am thinking too.

"Not quite five stars, but great central heating" HAAAAAAAAAAA
One of the main horrific attributes of Hereditary in my opinion is that we don’t get closure on what happens with the cult or Peter.
A sequel would honestly just ruin that horrific ending. Although a prequel would probably be interesting
Same with Ari's other films. They just END suddenly.
Everyone thought a prequel to “The Thing” would be great and look what happened. We need more one and done movies.

Thank you so much dude, that’s really generous. Very glad you enjoyed it!
The full analysis is a monster of a video in itself. This is a wonderful (epilogue) cherry on top!
Thank you so much dude!
That's what I thought when I first watched the movie back in 2018
This was my interpretation personally but I also recognize that’s not likely the truth of the movie.
I am curious - why do we assume the voice of Charlie from Annie is the original Charlie and not just a trick?
EXXXXXACTLY!!!

A single host can hold a legion.
Paimon gets his own.
There literally is not another YT creator who gets my instinct click and like faster than a new Novum vid does. Your work is fantastic, mate.
So beautiful! 😢
