Thank you Danny! I was thrilled to see the name of my orchid! Thank you for taking the time to make this video 😊. I will be watching all your future videos for more growing tips on, fertilizing, watering, and light. I am new to this and as i mentioned before. This is my first orchid and i have grown attached to it. Lorena
I know this is an old video but I bought an orchid yesterday that looks just like the Phal tzu chiang balm but with bushier flowers. The leaves also have a silvery hue to it. I didn’t realize it’s a fragrant orchid at the shop but today I noticed a nice mild scent from the orchid. It smells exactly just like the sedirea japonica to me. I’m trying to identify this orchid and I think it’s the tzu chiang balm or a similar hybrid.
Very strange indeed. The smell is typical for a flower. Reminds me a bit of daisies. It might be, because there are two plants, which seem to have the same name. Yours might be this one: www.dorisorchid.com/public_garden/orchidfiles/1588/1588_1308_1412131309.jpg Mine is a mini orchid with flowers that look like this. www.orchidweb.com/images/Product/large/dsogot20b.jpg Their edges seem a bit ruffled and they are quite small. :)
i got a Phaleenpopsis Sogo relax. it has such a beautiful Dark Purple color. they sold it in a 11x8 cm Pot for 295$ SEK They would usually sell it for almost 400$ SEK so it was a good deal.
Hope you'll like it but I am sure you will :D yes they can sometimes pause their spikes and the Liodoro seems to bloom in spring for me, in any case the warm weather :)
I love your room! I have a north facing window. There I have five orchids in water culture. All my orchids are outside in a tiny east facing backyard porch. I also have one window which faces south.my love is big but my space is so little. Thank you for my love of orchids!! IT IS ALL YOUR FAULT!!
Hello Danny, I have a beautiful white/pink/yellow Mini-Phalaenopsis with a beautiful Lily of the Valley scent. At least that’s what I smell. Would paste a picture here but UA-cam won’t let me. Would like to find out which Mini-Phalaenopsis it is so I can purchase more.
You should really buy a Doritaenopsis Little Peach if you can get your hands on one. It looks a little like the Tzu Chiang Balm, but the phragrance is absolutely stunning. I swear it can fill an entire room.
a scrip usually makes the flow much better and holds your ideas in one place.. but it takes time lol so with the more simple subjects I prefer no script :P depends on the subject, but for more elaborate presentations it's hard to have a nice flow without it ;)
Gotta love fragrant Phals. Long lasting scent machines! I have a Phal. Chingruey's Goldstaff that bloomed for 5 months. One month later, it is already producing a new spike. Extremely vigorous, and it had a strong perfumey smell to boot! I must keep an eye out for that Sun Passat - I swear I saw one at a local market that looked exactly like it. It would be a gamble to buy a NOID, but it's a gamble I have won before :P
She's a good choice! In the mornings I could smell her from my bed, which was 10 feet away from the window. Phal. Pinlong Cherry had a similar range, but the Pinlong Cherry has a much sweeter smell. Good luck in finding it :)
i.imgur.com/336hboO.png I think I totally lucked out. I visited a random Trader Joe's about 40 miles away from my house and found this. I pray I chose correctly!
One of my favourite phalaenopsis hybrid is the magic art! (also known as doritaenopsis arakaki princess) I just love the mixture of colours perfectly blended together. The only con is that it's not fragrant. Mine is producing a keiki at the moment :) If you can find it i advice you to buy it! So prettyyy!!!
Danny why dont you try Rhynchostylis retusa orchid and Aeredis odorata orchid the former has a sweet smell and the latter has a zesty lemony smell .I am sure you will like them after all you are after the fragrant orchids.
Thanks for the great suggestions for Phaleanopsis Hybrids....I will definitely be keeping my eye out for them :) I was wondering.....Do you have the name for the Phaleanopsis that appears at 16 seconds? I have the exact same Phaleanopsis but have NoID for it.
I love my phal . Liodora, and quite agree with your ranking. But my p.leodora produces only one or two flower at a time. Do you have to leave the old flower spike or cut it? how do you get more flower per spike?
Hi, mine didn't make any new flowers on the old spike from the tip but from a branch. I am not sure if she is sequential really, but you can keep the spikes and see :) Mine makes 3-4 flowers on a spike, maybe it has to do with age. Bu yes she will not make a cascade :)
Hope all is well Danny. I finally got the Phalaenopsis Liodoro shipped from Poland to the USA. Since the blooms faded, due to being shipped, do I cut the flower spike? Or is it a sequential bloomer? Please let me know. Please let me know. Thanks!
Why do some Orchid keepers tend to dismiss Phals? In my area, I don't really have a whole lot of space to experiment with but also because of climate issues. I'm in the US - Texas and it can get pretty hot here. Temperature ranges here from about 34F to 110F. So the best place is indoors. There really isn't a great nursery in the area I live so I'm not sure where to get specific/type bred Phals.
I'm curious, Danny. What position would you give to the Mini Mark in your list? BTW, where did she end up? Did you take her to Cyprus or did she stay at your mom's home? I still remember vividly all the keiki explosion she had years ago, that marked me when I was beginning with orchids. I totally agree with your first position. Regards from Spain
Please please! Can you give advice on roots that have been damaged or are rotting midlength? even if the ends look green what to do? cut them? remove the dead area without touching the middle cord?Thank you!!
Hi, if they are on a Phalaenopsis leave them be, the other half might remain ok. They can do that although I didn't see this behavior on too many other orchid species :)
Hi, I can't say I know too much about orchids, but I have a good grasp of the basics. I know that the draft from air conditioners is bad for orchids, but I am pretty sure mine have not been exposed to such conditions directly. Still, I noticed a strong tendency towards dropping the flowers, which may have been caused by the change in temperature. Any ideas? Btw I really find your videos very informative and helpful 😊
I have sooooooo many Phalaenopsis orchids and love all of them. At the moment I have two in bloom which I think that you would like too. Sadly I do not know the names of those orchids. To bad I can not send pics here I'd love to show them to you because they are different in shape to all the other Phalaenopsis and one of them does have a really sweet smell
Hi, you could send me pictures, just upload a picture to photobucket, flickr, instagram, imgur or g plus and share the link in a comment here, I'll take a look :)
I have a phal timothy christopher, although it was sold as "wild white". It has a terminal flower spike. When I went back to the store I noticed that every single one of these plants for sale had terminal spikes. Is it typical for this type or can it be forced (to produce even more blooms)?
Hi, I saw a few of them with terminal spikes in my life too. It might not be a genetic thing but who knows what they receive in nurseries, hormones, fertilizers wise. In case mine develops a terminal spike I'll make a video and mention this, in case it's a genetic thing.
Hey Danny! How did your phal. handle their new media? Did they lose the same amount of roots when comparing to switching into a bark media? Sorry if I might be unclear :(
Very nice video, and it was nice to learn the name of that yellow phal, which I have seen from other videos but didn't know the name, and I didn't know it's fragrant (adding it right now to my wishlist). Are all phal. Sweet Memory Liodoros fragrant? I saw this orchid last year at an orchid show, and couldn't notice any fragrance at all, so I wasn't too impressed and didn't buy it. Probably it's one of those that only smell during the warmer hours of the day, at noon or so? Or maybe some don't have fragrance?
Hi Andrea, yes they should all be fragrant but pretty sensitive to external factors :) When I purchased my Liodoro it had no fragrance, but I knew what it was ;) for 3 whole days she didn't smell of anything in my house and I was a bit worried, but then one morning boom :)) it's a mix of proper hydration, light, temperature I think ;) In stores they pretty much smell like wax to me.
hi danny! this video made me delighted somehow :D off to the topic, I've just discovered that my catt is infected by black rot so I watched your older video which talks about treating black rot.I noticed that 8 out of 10 canes show a trace of rot (the rot is located at the inner center of the cane). so, I decided to chop off 7 canes that are infected but still green and I left one infected cane that was treated. now, there are only 3 canes left after treatment :( I actually regret chopping all the 7 canes since they're not fully infected. but what if I didn't remove the canes that are partially infected and treated it with h2o2, will the infection stops? (the rot is at the inner part of cane not outside) what do you think? Thanks!
Hi Jobet, I think that if it is indeed black rot the canes would have been lost anyway, so don't worry for chopping them. This disease is lethal, John Benedict here has a long and bad history with it and chopping off orchids. The infection usually doesn't stop with anything, again if it really is black rot. You will know it is because it spreads lightning fast. You can send em a pic if you are unsure, just upload a picture to photobucket, flickr, instagram, imgur or g plus and share the link in a comment here, I'll take a look :)
+MissOrchidGirl sorry danny, I'm only using mobile device so can't share the link towards the photos. but I uploaded the pics in g+ so you will see em if you'll search my profile name 'Jobet Tongol'. then the first picture you'll see there is the cane I've left that has trace or signs of infection but I already treated it with cinnamon and h2o2. then the 2nd and 3rd pics show the chopped canes that isn't totally rotted but looks unsavable. it seems to be crown rot but all the seven bottom canes are starting to turn black as well (I can't show it anymore since it's already in the trash can) so I think that it is black rot. what to you think?
Let's see.... One fragrent phalaenopsis hybrid that I have would be The Sogo Cock Oriental Showgirl Phalaenopsis (yes I know funny name:) the flowers are thick and waxy, with this fragrance that smells of a cross between sweet lemons and lilies.
It really got me intrigued :D i have some faint fragrance on my Dendrobium and a cattleya (not sure of their names sadly no proper name tag on them when i bought, and its so faint) Been really curious to buy some fragrant ones any chance of you making a top5-10 of your favourite fragrant orchids? :) (if you done it and i missed it im sorry ^_^ )
Hi! Indeed she did a top5 of fragrant orchids and many more videos. Even I think she did one of the worst smelling orchids. If you go to orchidnature.com and type "fragrant" in the search button all the videos about the subject should appear.
Hello, I have Aphid (plant lice) infestation on my zygopetalums, Nelly Isler, and 1 oncidium. What can i use against them? Assuming they will totally hate a shower T_T.
Hi Iva, not to worry they are easy to exterminate, here is my recipe ua-cam.com/video/giJ0VGenMxk/v-deo.html you can remove the alcohol if your plants have sensitive leaves, like the zygopetalum and nelly isler. Phalaenopsis are ok with alcohol on leaves but not buds. But with the soap it should work as well, alcohol just speeds up the process and disinfects from whatever disease they might carry :) Good luck!
Nice guide, the Leodora is definitely interesting. Could you perhaps help me with one thing? my Zygo (yup, its "it") seems to be doing good, but the biggest pseudobulb has lost all of it's leaves and has a growing black spot on the top bit of the bulb. I fear it might be rot. I took some pics on it and added it in a drive folder, if you have time, would you mind taking a look at them? drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B53feilRgl7iN2pIVGg1UDluQ1U&usp=sharing
Hi, ok that's a bit concerning, does the infection spread from day to day? if yes I think the psb needs to be cut.. keep its base intact as I see it's a middle psb. So cut bellow the infection, but keep what you can from the psb and just let it dry well. You can spray hydrogen peroxide 3% on it and then dry it, press some cinnamon powder on it, this should help with forming a good calice.
MissOrchidGirl Thanks for the fast reply! Yes, it is definitely spreading. I did as you suggested and cut the top bit so no black bits remained and disinfected and dried it. I cut the removed bit in half, and the entire inner part was black, compared to the green of the remaining pseudobulb. Now I just hope the rest of the bulb will survive.
flic.kr/p/Jq1y5c and flic.kr/p/Jq1mwT. Thank you for helping me identify two of my Phals. Nice disposal Danny. Though you skipped out the beautiful Bellina which is still in my wish list with Liodoro. Have a nice Sunday.
Beautiful orchids
This has to be one of your best videos I've ever seem, I'm in love with the shot of the orchid (slow motion) blooming!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed this :D
i am interested to this kind of phalaenopsis

This is going to be one of your best, "all-time" videos; for sure...! :)
Excellent presentation...!
Aww thanks John :D glad you enjoyed it!
Doriataenopsis Sogo Gotris is amazing. Tiny, but beautiful and very fragrant. :)
Oh that's strange, I had this one but it has no fragrance :( wonder why, will look out for it again because he is also very pretty :)

As a side note, I always sniff these orchids with tiny and waxy flowers, there is a chance they are fragrant :D
Yes, they usually are fragrant. I also sniff them when I find them in stores and sometimes they do have a fragance when they're well taken care of.
Have a look at phalaenopsis sunny smell. Very cute flower with nice smell
Where can I buy the little one that has fragrance? I've been learning how to care for the 2 kinds I have.
wow...your prentation was really good...especially the last...keep it up :) :)

Thank you. All are phalaenopsis. Recued them from being dumped so I inherited them with that problem. Will do that.xx
Good day, Hiw can i avail that kind of phalaenopsis
Hi, I couldn't enjoy the white flowers. They still looked great.
little zebra!! love love love

What is the name of your red phalaenopsis with yellow edges called because I would love to fine and buy one
Got my liodoro sweet memory. She small but I got one ! Yeaha! JHL
Hey Danny!
How did your phal. handle their new media? Did they lose the same amount of roots when comparing to switching into a bark media? Sorry if I might be unclear :(
Hi, I think I understood :) no they didn't really lose any roots, the odd 1 or 2 that were damaged perhaps :)
That's wonderful. Hopes the Growstone does the same trick as seramis :D
I bet that last orchid couldn't put off enough perfume for me where can I find these beautiful things

I had the Leo doro but it died the only one of my 25 orchids to ever die seeing yours is upsetting haven't found a new yet😭
Danny, where did you buy these beautiful orchids? Especially number 1-3?
Hi, they are all bought from flower sjops or garden centers, not a specific nursery :)
+MissOrchidGirl We can only get the most common types where I live, I will have to search online :) great videos, I love them!
Have you known an phalaenopsis orchid that have leaves with two colors?
I saw couple of them in the supermarket next to my house.
Should I buy it?
Hi, you mean the variegated one? (green/yellow) Yes why not, usually the Sogo Vivien can have this variegation :)

I find that I love all phalaenopsis hybrids who have P. violacea in their parentage :D
WOW, i thought all phals are odorless!
what happened to your Mini Mark?
still with me :D
miss orchidgirl what is the flower size of phelenopsis moth orchid?
+Govind Singh Govind Singh it depends on variety, there is no standard size that includes all members of a genus :)
Wow
Ahhhh I’m so upset haha my Sogo Yukidian was killed by my boss 😂

Honorable mention :D
Better plant the Sogo in a heavy pot - the spikes will take the plant down.
flic.kr/p/Jq1y5c and flic.kr/p/Jq1mwT. Thank you for helping me identify two of my Phals. Nice disposal Danny. Though you skipped out the beautiful Bellina which is still in my wish list with Liodoro. Have a nice Sunday.
Great orchid finds indeed :D
