IF YOU HAVE A STORE-BOUGHT ORCHID . . . Mine always die but bloody-minded determination means I kept watering it and SURPRISE . . . This one sprouted a flower-spike so it was high time I learned how to keep it happy; this channel provides a great crash-course if you know nothing about Orchids. Thank-you.
Danny, I just want to encourage you to pursue your idea to produce a video series on "The Pros and Cons of Growing 'X' Orchid." I just think that would be so helpful to all of us! We all have different conditions in our growing environments, and, as you said in this video, what may be a "pro" for someone may be a "con" for someone else. Having that information put forth in individual videos would be really helpful to those of us trying to decide whether to add a specific orchid to our collection. And if you could include videos on orchids that are perhaps a bit less common, that would be great. There's is so much information for phals, oncidiums, dendrobiums, etc., but less information available for, for example, Beallaras, or maybe the Latouria Dendrobiums. I know you have videos on them already, but the internet in general is lacking in good, reliable information. Go for it! And thank you!
I really love phals, i have this addiction on hanging pendant orchids.. and your cons of leaning large pendant leaves and blooms are so appealing to me.. i always hang them up on wide planks of wood groups.. and when they blooms.. a curtain of flowers.. yey.. also.. really love those large pendant leaves... theyre breathtaking.
Hi, i have been a new sub here. I really enjoy watching your videos. My mom grows a lot of orchids in driftwood, but with your channel, i was encouraged to grow them in pots. I like how detailed and logical your explanations are. Your voice is also nice. Sometimes i binge on your channel and just get on with my daily chores, just like listening to a radio. Waiting for your next video!
Love the series idea! I can't wait for the ones on oncidiums and cattleyas, I know they're on the way! I love phals and now with all the minis on the market, I am happy to find room for them. I like to group two phals (medium and mini) together in a pot so I feel like I'm getting more out of the space than just one bulky plant. I wouldn't do it with an expensive one or a species but they are lovely when in bloom together. Like an arrangement without going through the trouble or cost!
0:37 Hi Danny my rootless phals are attending to grow roots yay! Lol. By the way I knew to the growing of orchids. Miniature is the only to go for me lol
i got an orchid from BJs once and its blooms lasted at least 7 months! theyre insane! It came with two flower spikes, one of them grew *another* flower spike out of one of the scales.
I have had to stop myself from buying so many phals! I am always finding them at my local market for $3 once the flowers fall off. I have 6 now in my tiny apartment. I bought 4 vandas for $7 each because they had no flowers! My first vanda's ever! The windows in my bedroom have become an orchid garden :-D
One can tell your disdain for those "spider mites". Those "damn things"! 😉 I don't blame you though. They are hideous little monsters! I'm doing the preventive maintenance recommended by you. Thank you, Danni for the tips! You are awesome as always!
Great video Danny. I have to smile when you say that lack of fragrance is a con because that is the biggest pro for me as flower fragrances are one of the things that set my Asthma off. Thanks for all that you have taught me about orchids.
Hey Dani, I managed to stop by mistake a stem rot by spraying the top of the crown with hidrogen peroxide. After this, in a few months plant grew a sibling. The mother plant did not saved herself, dud not grew anymore, but kept her bottom leafs green for almost one year after this. Gave enough time for the sibling to grew and develop its own roots.
Actually you made it worst cause hydrogen peroxide after some minutes becomes water so if you spread the top of the crown, you water the top of the crown and that helped stem rot and orchid tried to make a sibling it's self.
Hi ! Dani it is great video my phals are having a root rot about 12 of them sometimes i feel frustrated and a few have no more green roots and am trying to rescue them , crazy about how i have a good humidity and temp and air circulation maybe my watering and too much fertilizer , can i use Orchiata bark instead and just wash then and dry before repotting? I also have aa lava rock maybe just wash them throughly with distilled water I don’t use tap water even watering , oh maybe how i water them. I learn a lot in your video please continue doing them because i have a friends also like me just starting phals first maybe i will share your video we are all starter and right now i am experience one phals on hydroponics
Let's have more of this type of video. It's a great idea and very interesting (at least I find it so). Throw them in here and there if you can. Many thanks,e
Hi Danny. Call it wierd, but I kinda love orchids and especially phals more for the growth of the roots and leaves than the bloom -maybe I’m still too green in this hobby. It’s like the “Adams Family” when Gomez cuts the rose off just for the stems 🤪. I have a little Vanda (?) that’s all of 5cm wide and is breaking out a new leaf in its crown -that’s excitement !!! Can hardly wait til it covers my kitchen ( 1 meter) window, maybe by this time next year ? Anyway love your new series and anxiously waiting for next installment. Which window for which plant living where ??? Danny, I seem to have a correlation with phals bought when planted in moss, then converting to semi hydro, they often go into shock -roots die off, than when I buy in bark and converting into semi hydro. Ones in bark the plant stops for a month and continues growing, whereas the phals that were in moss takes three or four months and losses many if not all the roots and new growth will begin after four or five months. Also because much of the roots are gone the orchid progress much more slowly. Any thoughts or experience in this ?
I do not know other orchids, I only have phals, so I am not aware how it is with the others, but it is definitely a pro that they don't have pollens, so they don't trigger allergy. Once one of my flatmate wanted me to give them away when I moved in and she found out about them. I told her that she has no reason to worry, and asked her to let me know if she could notice any of her symptoms due to the phals. She never got back to me about it. (I kept them only in my room, about 20 of them.)
I just bought two. One for 73$, it has 5 spikes but no buds yet. The sec one cost 43$, has two spikes with blooms already. Both have great aromas. I’m probably going to repot them to semi hydro or maybe try Kokedama.
I love phals but I don't know what I am doing wrong cause I manage to kill them. That makes me really sad. I have dens, Vandas, cattleya and oncidiums and they are all doing well. Thanks for your videos!
I just ordered a phal. Mtuo Golden Mituo #1. It said Fragrant with continuous bloom. I can’t wait to have it. I’ve had regular phal. Before that had no fragrance. But their leaves turn yellow and died.
I have a quick question. So my new phal had a small aerial root, but the top just stopped growing and turned silver(it didnt die or get munched dont worry lol). How do you sustain aerial roots to keep them growing? Would it be high humidity or is it up to the orchid themselves?
Joshy Likey my orchid has many really long aerial roots. They stop growing when it blooms so they can focus on blooms. When the blooms finish, the aerial roots continue growing. If yours is blooming, it is ok. if not, it may need more humidity. Humidity = strong fat growing aerial roots!
For the longest time didnt buy an orchid because I thought they were poisonous to cats. I have a cat but I finally decided to buy one because I figured it would be out of reach on my dresser. I googled it and they are non-toxic. I love orchids and had wanted one since I was a kid but didnt because I've always had cats but now I realize I could have this whole time.
MissOrchidGirl , please help me with this issue! I always repot an orchid in fresh media after I purchase it, because I wanna get rid of possible pests, but also because in stores are not very properly cared and they have a lot of dried roots. The problem is that for weeks I look at the roots inside the pot and they seem very fine, green and plump, but at the surface the root is mushy and it starts to rot, so I have to cut a root which is 90% fine (in the media) because the part which is at the surface is dead.
I have two Sogo Yukidian V3 They're lovely -- they're beautiful They just smell like burnt hair at night for whatever reason. None of my other phals have that smell.
My one and only phal I had hardly bloom again and when it did it only had 3-4 buds which blasted all the time. It recently got stem rot and that was it 😩. I went out and bought two more to try again!
Hi, trying to find the video you mentioned about the “bud blast” but not sure which one, will you be able to provide the link that contain it? I’m experiencing that thing at the moment.
Shape variety one of my orchids doesn’t look like a mini Phalaenopsis it has 8 flower spikes it ripped one of its leaves off and it’s has a sent and I got it from a store this year.
I had a phal with flowers that smelled like fruit loops at night. The flowers were orange/pinky spotted. Any idea what kind it was? I got it from Lowes.
Randomly watching your videos on my lunch breaks to help break up the day. I realize this one has many years old but what is the name of the orange Phalaenopsis in this video?
Your orchids are always so beautiful and i love watching your videos. The verities you have are so unique but what type would you say has the biggest flowers?
Priscilla Lynn if you check out the info spot on the video she has a link to the video she made on the oil she uses and how she used it. Hope it helps.e
Your phals loo great tho! I too got bored with them and started buying others...a paph and a catt . and my phals seem to be taking up all my space too. They are the only ones that tip over.
Hey, I like your videos and especially your clear, organised and objective presentation of information. Do you have a scientific background? Can you possibly make a video on water cultures of orchids?
Thanks, glad you enjoy them :) no scientific background, it's just a passion. And also I don't think I'm the best person to do wc videos since I don't use it and don't like it much either. But there are a few channels growing orchids in wc, just search :)
Idk I'm having the same problem with an orchid I bought from aldi it looked healthy and it was healthy and I put it in orchid soil just In case and then everything started going downhill the leave were wilting the root system was absolutely destroy and now it's in semi hydroponics until it grows new roots
It would have been nice to know the names of these phals. I have very limited space and need to be selective in what I buy, so color and pattern is important to me. Thank you for these great videos.
Hi, these are NoID flowershop Phals, they are not sold with name tags and it can be quite the challenge to find correct, registered names, if they even exist. It's better to leave them nameless in this case I believe 😉
Question...when you bring this home....clean everything!!!!....repot...why do you still get spider mites? Also...I'm sotra gonna start training mine to do what I want...is that wrong?
Got a question: I have 2 nobile hybrid dendrobians; same location; same watering cycle. One flowered 2 months ago and flowers just died. The other flowered 2 weeks ago and flowers dying. Any advice on why the 2nd one did not retain flowers longer?
The best preventative you can do for phals or any orchid for that matter is to spend time with them! If you do you can prevent or catch many issues before they become bad. For example, if you're inspecting your favorite phal and you see a red spider mite, you can squash it before it has a chance to multiply! The more time you spend without it becoming an unhealthy obsession the better! Also, don't water your phal from the top it's better to dunk them in a bucket of water!
Does anyone have the ratios/ measurements for the ingredients for the spider mite treatment? The original vid talking about the treatment doesn't have measurements. Also can I use mineral oil instead of paraffin oil? Love the idea of the pros and cons. I think this type of info will be so very helpful. ☺

Reblooming is the usual problem with endemic or pure breed orchids but solved in some cross breeds. Environmental needs must be met. Low morning sunlight with screen nets, no watering on leaves, once every 2 weeks application of fungicide if needed. Very weak daily fertilizing every other day with blooming(mwf) and growing(t-th-s) fertilizers (10-30-20 & 30-10-10)- that is if you want a "for show" orchids.
I love Phals! I remember you have a Kaoda Twinkle 'Chocolate Drop', where did you get it ? I can't seem to find it here in Germany. Phalaenopses will always hold that special space in my heart - and my home. No cons whatsoever. Love 'em! Love 'em! Love 'em!
Marie-Michelle Agreed!
Marie-Michelle love your Chanel .
Me too. TBH, they are my favorites. If it's possible to have a favorite.

Would you make one for Vanda orchids too?
Hello, I'm new to Orchid land, I have a question what kind of media are you using? it look like a pebbles and where can I get them.
It's called "Leca" and every garden/flower shop has them! 🙂👍
I love phals but I don't know what I am doing wrong cause I manage to kill them. That makes me really sad. I have dens, Vandas, cattleya and oncidiums and they are all doing well. Thanks for your videos!

Andreea Calin how long have you had this plant. how was it repotted
how is it cared for. how is the
environment etc.
I have two Sogo Yukidian V3
They're lovely -- they're beautiful
They just smell like burnt hair at night for whatever reason. None of my other phals have that smell.
Any yellow-orange-red orchid has me sold forever
All your phals are gorgeous! I think phals are hard to grow!

i got my 1st phal as a about to start bloom freebie
Are the drip feeders available in the uk worth using, if so when to use and when not too.
i think at one point of our lives a phalaenopsis orchid made us want to be and commit to become an orchid parent
Where I live basic white phals cost the equivalent of $40USD and we typically don't get any other varieties :(
Got a question: I have 2 nobile hybrid dendrobians; same location; same watering cycle. One flowered 2 months ago and flowers just died. The other flowered 2 weeks ago and flowers dying. Any advice on why the 2nd one did not retain flowers longer?

Hello Dani. I'm a beginner on orchid growing. What kind of medium do you use on the 18min. part that looks like orange balls?
Hi, it's called LECA
Does anyone have the ratios/ measurements for the ingredients for the spider mite treatment? The original vid talking about the treatment doesn't have measurements.

I did not cut the spikes. Instead of blooms it is now making leaves at the top.
I love Phals! I remember you have a Kaoda Twinkle 'Chocolate Drop', where did you get it ? I can't seem to find it here in Germany. Hi
There are cons when it comes to growing orchids? I refuse to believe you! 😂
Robin I believe it, I am having more trouble trying to rescue one for my daughter & I don't believe I will ever try another Orchid!! Marylyn😳🙄
I feel exactly the same about phals, got bored with them quickly, worst thing of all no fragrance.
I have an allergy to most floral fragrances so like that Phalaenopsis Orchids don't have a fragrance.
there are the cons when it comes to growing orchids, but there must be pros too, or there would not be so many orchid growers!
Fluorescent lightning sounds terrifying.
They go hard because it provides tons of light without the risk of burns because it's not the sun
I love “gouch in the Matrix”
