Seaman Farris Lee onboard USS Houston (CA-30) February 8th 1942 at 1500 on February 6th, a formation of Bombers armed with Torpedos attacked our taskforce, HMS Hobart was the primary Target and most of the Bettys dropped on her, she avoided all of the Torpedoes and 2 came dangerously close to Houston but the ship turned in time. I am proud to say that our ship can claim the takedown of atleast 1 Betty and assisted and tearing up another. 30 minutes later on the same day, we were attacked by another formation of Bettys level bombed our task force. This time they managed to hit Houston with a bomb which wrecked the mid section which I was fortunate to not be near. A close friend was caught in the blast, but survived by the skin of his teeth luckily. Houston managed to shoot down one of the bombers and 3 others were shot down by other ships in the fleet and no other ship in the task force got damaged and by 1548, the fires were out and flooding pumped out. We were informed that at 1618, the other task force comprising of the detatched Java and Express were attacked with Express taking damage but the damage wasn't revealed to us. On February 6th, I also recieved a Battefield Promotion to Lt.(j.g.).
And finally, on the 8th of February, I was informed of a Japanese Cruiser force which attacked 2 of our destroyers, USS Paul Jones and USS Whipple, both Destroyers got out with minimal damage.
Wolf, I do ask you take good care of the USS Houston, I had a great Uncle who was part of one of the 5inch gun crews and went down with the ship when she was lost in the real battle of the Java Sea. I'd like to think that if the Houston doesnt sink in the game that he lives
I beat this campaign last week after failing my first attempt. It's a pretty fun campaign, though it's admittedly pretty frustrating sometimes when the Japanese spot you and send what feels like infinite bombers at you when their scout planes spot you on their return. I loved playing with the various ships of the different countries and I had a main battle task force with Renown and King George that I used as my main combat force. something I found kinda interesting was that this campaign was the first one that I never lost any warships in. even on my failed attempt, all that I lost were merchants that fell to the previously mentioned bomber attacks. Here's hoping you have better luck than I do! Edit: If you plan on getting a heavy ship soon, I'd suggest getting the Battlecruiser Renown. The extra speed will be incredibly helpful, trust me.
Wolfpack's main objective is to strengthen air and shore defence on the Dutch East Indies Islands - heavy warships might not be his priority - Rookisa! Something that the Allied Forces there, during World War 2 itself. Thought of doing but owing to lack of proper communication between Dutch, US, British and Australian command, was not fully implemented. This what if - is a very plausible one that the Japanese initial forces in this part of the Far East might have had much heavier casualties to take these Islands close to Australia. Getting the logistics right is strategically the correct course to take. I would - if playing this game - choose to do so up until the third week of the month of February 1942. Then try to bring in fighting warships to bulk up the forces and I would have brought in a mix of Submarines, Frigates - for convoy escort work - Destroyers - for combat escort and Anti Sub work, Light Cruisers and heavy cruiser for combat lines and Escort and Auxiliary Carriers for Air Defence Work. Torpedo Boats for hit and run missions ( As the PT Boats of the USN did in Celebes) and Corvettes to supplement the escorts on both convoys and combat escort. The few gunboats with 6 inch or in rare cases 15 inch of WW1 vintage I would stick in the middle of convoys to bolster AA defence or deter small units of the Japanese Navy from attacking the same. Gunboats could manage 12 to 15 knots but pack considerable armament as described. And the Royal Navy had quite a few of these available in these parts. Oh shallow draught on these as well - though rolling dreadfully in rough seas - they could not be easy to torpedo. Torpedoes were set at waterline level for normal ships - civilian and military - gunboats designed to operate in shallower waters were relatively immune from torpedoes. Wolfpack's main objective is logistics first. He's following Montgomery's example in this instance of time. Getting the fighting line up later is a general wiser idea to pursue, he'll certainly follow up on your suggestion, at the right time to do so.
@@stephenfarthing3819 Ah. I made the suggestion of a Battlecruiser since the strategy that won my campaign was to abandon Singapore and bring the troops and supply to Palenbang through the use of warships. After that I'd engage the Japanese fleet with superior numbers in night fighting to stave away convoys and ships that try to land solders or bombard the port. The Battlecruiser allows for a decently fast supply fleet and provided me with the firepower to take on the heavy ships that would occasionally show up. A couple months of stalling the Japanese at Palenbang allowed me to prepare a 6,500 man force to retake Singapore before the end of April. Though you're right in regards to big ships not fitting in with Wolf's current strategy since they can't carry any troops. But I have a feeling one would be useful when he finishes a supply mission and sees an opportunity to swat a Japanese task force. But they're 70 points in the game and not available until late March, so my advice was under the assumption that it'll be something that consider when they become available.
And to do this. As has been suggested. Will still lead to the same outcome. A few big battleships won't win the battles here. Following Montgomery's example of building up the capacity of this. Is the only way to do so. Slow and steady will win the day. I believe that Wolfpack is following this principle.
Might be a battleship. In which case ! You were fortunate to get your four stacker destroyers out of it. I do look forward to your next installment. I like a good war story. Oh and I can guess where these ships come from - Tokyo Express territories. To stop re-enforcement operations.
18:10 There's controlling the aircraft directly... but another possibility was just that the Hurricane was moving a tad too fast. dropping it by 5 knots or so might have allowed it to get the right angle while leaving it on autocontrol.
I absolutely love WW2 history and especially the way you teach it by telling the events that happened during the video. I got hooked on all of your Silent Hunter series and your War on the Sea series cause I didn't know much about the Battle of the Pacific but I'm slowly learning about it and I just want to say I love your content!
The screening destroyers helped with air defense. I suggest a few submarines for spotting different fleets and doing some damage before they get to you.
I mean, I get not using subs offensively because they can break the game if you use them right but just using them for scouting would be a ton of help.
I appreciate your excellent content Wolfpack. I've had to spend most of the past year in bed with cancer and always looked forward to another War on the Sea episode from you!!
One thing that I dislike with this game is that the AI seems like it has an endless amount of aircrafts. I remember once I was chasing Shokaku with my task force (I had 2 carriers). I love the new elements of surprise and excitement, but honestly I want manual AA control in these mods (currently playing Tokyo Express w/Arsenal Magazine mod just for the Midway carriers) Many times I see tracers go well below their fuselages, my thinking is the radar assisted guns aim for the belly because it's what the radars pick up, so they just shoot and shoot and shoot some more until the enemy is too close to dodge, which KINDA reflects what they did IRL. From what I read the radars didn't account for sideslip (which they showed in Eternal Zero/Eien no Zero) or stalls. A lot of the time they also came in faster than the fuses could be pre-set, so a common tactic with commonwealth naval forces was to pre-set all fused shells to a much closer range and let'em have it.
I'm not much of a Navy guy but I do appreciate their work especially in WW2. I can't imagine how terrifying being a sailor in the Pacific would be for the duration of the war. The Japanese used Torpedoes. And undercalculated the fleet AA Capacity. Level Bombing might cause more pronounced difficulties. But there were losses. All in all.
