It was insane....but those days, you did not have homing torpedoes (except the last few years of the war) so that is what you had to deal with. Still, even General Belgrano in 1982 was sunk with non-homing torpedoes, I heard.
The ARB gui in SH3 has a table about taking time measurements at off angles. It is the Klairung table on the Attack scope. You then need to add (when going at the target) or substract (when going away) your own speed from the mesurment. At 45 degrees from your 0 or 180 you need to add or remove your own speed from the emasurement. If you go towards the target while measuring, your must add own speed, because your measurement will be longer. And you need to add it if you are moving away from the target's path.
some interesting reading around those batteries in the torpedoes supposedly they needed charging every few days and could explode if overcharged,I wouldn't mind seeing that as a feature....if true
I still remember fondly doing a 360° crash dive blind aft torpedo shot, sinking the target. Don't even know anymore if that was in Aces of the Deep or Silent Hunter. I think I should buy that game.

Really happy I stumbled upon your channel. Never realized how much I was lacking in Wolfpack simulator content. Might have to buy this game after watching more of you fucking the allies up.
I've not played this game. My favorite sub game is Silent Hunter 4 (I never bought SH 5; too many bad reviews). I'm looking at this game during 2023 Summer Steam Sale. Couple questions: 1) Can you use the Dick Kane targeting method.? I assume so. 2) How do you compute target speed if target is not 90 degrees to you? In SH4, we use the Navigation/Targeting map. Take a couple distance readings. Plot target course. Calculate speed based upon distance the target travelled during that amount of time. Here, target speed is calculated using: (Ship_Length * 2)/time (in seconds). But this assumes target is 90 degrees to you and not travelling at an angle towards you. For any SH4 players, how do you like Uboat compared to SH4? I see there's much more crew management for Uboat. Anything else stand out? sidebar: I've been playing sub games since Gato on MSDOS. I'm a developer. A couple of my first games I wrote were sub games.
This reminds me of player SH5 with Wolves of Steel (i think the mod was called. Playing on 95% realism, calculating everything by hand using the tools. Had so much fun figuring everything out. Too bad the game SH5 wasnt that good overall and SH3 feels to old now.
Loved the video, but I have to point out that you misidentified the tanker. It is not an OI model, but the next one on the pages of the ID book. I can't recall what type it was called. I can always tell by the short funnel. One of the tankers has a short funnel, the other is quite a bit taller.
Wish this game had a more spiced up espionage gameplay. When you approach lifeboats after sinking you may expect just being shot at by the crew being vengeful or thinking that you don't intend to take prisoners. When you board of a ship for inspection you should have a chance event this is an ambush now the delegation has to fight its way out. If it's a smuggler vessel and you go check the cargo it should be a possible fight cause the crew already knows the ship will be sunk. Fake friendly ship SOS signals to lure you into an ambush, or worse an SOS signal to a uboat in trouble... That's now a rigged booby trap. This game seems to easy and nice, you are the villain here, you should expect cunning and sometimes brutal opposition to yourself.
Love these videos, thank you. Just curious though. On both attacks you stopped the motors while already at low speed just prior to launching torpedoes. Wouldn't depth control be very difficult when all steerage way has come off the boat, complicated by the loss of thousands of pounds of weight leaving the boat during those torpedo salvos? I wonder how the game models this.
i don't think torp weight is modeled at all. there is SOME control penalties when at all stop but it mainly just involves rare unplanned surfacing :) which is 99% preventable by having an engineer at the depth station; that 1% missing covers misclicks and the engie being tired and going to bed.
that's a small boat in rough seas for you. most if not all the uboat series had a mechanical shaft overspeed protection for when the screws came out the water.
So I found a glitch in Silent Hunter 3 and I wanna know if other people had it. I play unmodded sh3 atm because I feel like it and I started in 1939 in Kiel and on my 2nd patrol while leaving Kiel and crossing Danish straits I found Type VIIB uboat just sitting there, I started a 2nd campaign and did the exactly same thing but uboat wasn't there and I tested it a few more times. That submarine doesn't move, it just sits there, if I sink it my game glitches out and ships don't move at all and just sit there and they can't but sunk no matter what. In only that one campaign there's submarine spawning and on other patrols it isn't there. The date I found in game was 1939 October 3rd 12.39 and I still don't know what's going on.
I struggle a little with magnetic fusing. Is it possible to run them under the keel of ships that are at a bad angle and still have them detonate? If so, how much depth/distance will the torpedoes tolerate. Yes, I know the mag fuses are quite fussy, but haven't seen much info about how to use them. Thanks all.
