Invoking the Kami: Shinto, Japanese Folk Magic and Esotericism
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 тра 2024
- This episode offers a scholarly exploration into the ancient Japanese spirituality of Shinto, or Kami-no-Michi, to understand Shinto's core principles and rituals, unravelling its place within historical contexts and modern esoteric traditions.
We address pivotal questions central to Shinto's spiritual narrative:
* How do Shinto practices integrate into the daily lives of the Japanese?
* What are Shinto rituals like Misogi and Saisen?
* In what ways do Omikuji and Omamori embody the intersection of faith and practice?
* How do the ceremonies of Shinto reflect Japan's cultural ethos and the broader animistic worldview?
We delve into the Misogi ritual of purification, the meaning behind the traditional offering of Saisen, and the significance of bell-ringing in shrine visits. We demystify the Omikuji practice of fortune-telling and the role of Omamori as protective talismans, examining their relevance to both adherents and curious scholars.
This video not only shares vivid images and descriptions from my recent visit to Japan but also embeds these experiences within a framework of peer-reviewed scholarship. It is an indispensable resource for those studying comparative religion, Japanese culture, or the diverse expressions of the sacred in daily life.

One of the great pleasures in life is a Sunday evening, working in the studio, and listening to a new video by Dr Angela.
Great video Dr Puca! When I went to Meijii shrine when I visited Tokyo in February 2020, I made sure to pick up some omamori for health and protection, since it was the first time I'd traveled overseas, and I was by myself. Also made sure to do the misogi before I entered the shrine, and offered up a prayer to whatever kami resided there. Apparently it all worked, because I got home safely and dodged getting Covid for two years.
You are breathing fire angela, this is truly the year of the dragon ❤😊
As a mostly European pagan i find Shinto absolutely fascinating and very helpful. Pagans can and should really learn from unbroken animistic traditions like Shinto
Much appreciated Japanese magick video! 🇯🇵♥️
I came here not knowing anything about Japanese esotericism or Shinto spirituality, so I hadn't a clue what to expect lol! Thank you for sharing, Dr. Puca. I found what you shared to be extremely interesting, I'm fascinated about the similarities with Western neo-Pagan or Wiccan beliefs. I hope that you share more insight into Eastern spirituality and esotericism.
shinto has a special place to me, since when i was feeling bad, and looking for help at some point tried the esoteric in a more practical way tried to contact deities from various religions and certain shinto deity was the only one that seemed to answer back ⛩
🇯🇵 ありがとう
😃 It's absolutely fascinating, Dr. Puca! Thank you for sharing this amazing academic video! 😃
I couldn't find the Japan flag, but here's an oil lamp. 🪔😊
Wonderful!
A curated transcript of this video will be sent to Inner Symposiasts and later here for all. So check back. 🎌 🇯🇵⛩️
Basically the Shinto see the gods as personifications of nature
Loving the video thanks.🎌
So glad!
Love this darling! Japan was my first overseas trip. I revisit when I can. It's an amazing place 🇯🇵👹♥
Can't leave the requested emoji, but this was very fascinating, as I love Japanese culture and sumo. Sumo is centered around Shintoism so I love getting more context.
I have 2 cherry trees that bloom each spring. They hang like an umbrella and are very beautiful. Their scent is heavenly and when the blossoms fall, they look like snow.
Washington DC has many cherry trees and is incredibly beautiful when they bloom. If you visit the US, try to visit DC and time it for the spring. The architecture is awesome.
I had a lifetime in japan. A few actually, and I can rarely find things that make me feel connected there. Your video literally made me cry. Thank you for helping me remember the magic. I'm weeping. I was a monk at Fushimi Inari Taisha, and forgot how the magic felt until now. I felt like I floated when I walked there.
That's awesome!
Shinto is awesome and I think really pragmatic/practical in ways I've noticed recently, like the ritual part, I really dont like people telling me how to talk to god so I didnt learn a lot of the language and ritual that would have helped me avoid angering persons and incurring wrath, clear communication is crucial but I dont know what the wind is trying to say like, most of the time specifically but I've always been a good sport if the want to play with my hat, plus I appreciate chill air and talk to them, I dont think Ive ever been lost and if I'm looking for something I can ask and sometimes theyll find something... similar, it's usually funny, I have some very convincing stage money.
Also there is a wonderful series called Natsumes book of friends, in both anime and manga format, it's the most wholesome yet light hearted yet spiritual profound.... I don't usually watch multiple seasons of anything, its not just a guy hanging out with a cat and also there are spirits dont read my nonsense go read Natsume, its your dest- and its like if old folk tales from the shinto tradition with a modern lens, its great!
If you have a chance do try to go to Ise Jinju. It's the oldest Shinto shrine in Japan and is absolutely on another level compared to any other shrine. An interesting thing is that it enshrines multiple highly revered Kami including Amaterasu.
🇯🇵 love your videos, greetings from croatia 🇯🇵
Glad you like them!
Thanks!
thank you so much!
I love this simple explanation. I had some idea about it but its great to get a very scholarly view. Great music too at the end! Kudos Doctor!
Glad it helped!
🇯🇵 I found this very informative. All I knew about Shinto was that it had to do with worshiping ancestors. It might be fun to do more research myself. I was really into the Tao Te Ching for a few years. But don’t know much about Daoism as a formal religion.
🙏 - I don't have a SHinto flag emoji. Thank you for sharing
Thank you Dr. Puca!
💜💜💜🇯🇵🇯🇵🎌
🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵 as always a great academic video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
🇯🇵 Very cool video! I like the small ritual actions when visiting jinja, including some of the things that are not as emphasized and not everyone does, like bowing before a torii gate while entering into the shrine precincts and turning around and bowing after passing under the torii as you're leaving. Omikuji is cool, there is a similar practice originating from China called qiuqian 求籤 (aka "kau chim"), but at least with what I'm familiar with in Taiwanese temples, you have to cast moon blocks ("poe divination") to get confirmation from the deity you drew the correct lot for the query.
I used to experiment with versions of lesser-known Shinto or "Koshinto" spiritual exercises such as Isonokami chinkonhō 石上鎮魂法 I'd learn from Japanese books. Good stuff
🇯🇵 … the similarities between this and Norse Paganism are striking
I like her. 😄 The world is about her spiritual development. This is a good life.
💜💜💜
Thank you 🇯🇵

Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks Dr Puca, I've always wanted to know a bit more about Shinto. My emoji set doesn't seem to have flags, so here's a weird emoji of a Japanese Post Office instead! 🏣

This was so Beautiful ❤️❤️❤️
Really I needed this thanks a lot
Sometimes life is unbelievable harsh you have to do a thing that is in essence what you have to do
And then you have to pay dearly for it.
This lecture was so much about sort of forgiving yourself for meditative balance... thanks
My pleasure 😊
🇯🇵 wonderful video! I’ve always seen so many references in media that I never understood. This provided me much valuable context. Thank you!

The Kami sound very similar to the Fair Folk in Europe
🇯🇵!!!
⛩ 🏯 🇯🇵
It's really common to say that the idea of the Kami is dissimilar to "Western" ideas of gods, but I think that it is more properly unlike monotheistic ideas of "God". For example, a Greek nympholept would certainly find the conception of Kami as very reminiscent of their understanding of their nymphe. In terms of larger polytheistic gods, and setting aside accidentals such as attributions or story details, how is Amaterasu Ōmikami fundamentally different conceptually than, say, Sulis Minerva, Sunna, or Saule? I submit that they aren't, and that polytheistic conceptualizations of the nature of divinity are generally, broadly consistent around the world. It is specifically monotheistic attempts to deny all other gods that distort this natural conceptualization, not something inherent in "the West".
i truly feel that shinto belief and practice are the closest to my own relationship with spirituality and i really want to visit a shrine to pray one day, but i also dont wanna look like another westerner engaging in orientalism ;-;

🇯🇵 I’m unable to help but hear “kami-no-michi,” “omikugi,” & “omamori” in a slightly excessive impression of an American doing an Italian accent. Maybe that’s just me. But, many thanks for such an authentic, & unique source of laughter, beauty, & Truth.
Between Islamic mysticism and Dune last week and Shintoism and Shogun this week, Dr. Puca's been on a run of accidental pop culture synchronicity
🗾
What do you mean Kami in human beings? Its surprising how Japanese (spelled with our letters sound just how they are spelled like Spanish which is my native language by the way). I feel like i know the Japanese culture and beliefs but dont know why; Japan is thr place I desire to visit if I could pick a place. Love your videos! 🌹💋😈

68But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69Also we have come to believe and know that You are the [q]Christ, the Son of the living God.”
😈😈😈😍 Angela 😮💨
This so interesting. Is it out- of- line.. for me, to say how beautiful you are.
3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 4just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, 5having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, 6to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He [a]made us accepted in the Beloved.

Matthew chpt.4 17FROM THAT TIME JESUS BEGAN TO PREACH AND TO SAY, REPENT:FOR THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN IS AT HAND
38Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the [k]remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”
