I was quite curious about Shinto while I was studying abroad in Japan. One day, we went on a guided tour of Kamakura to learn about temples and shrines. Our guide was an older Japanese woman, and her perspective on religion was quite interesting. When I asked about why Japanese people visit both shrines and temples, she said “they’re the same. Emperor Meiji tried to separate them, but in our hearts they’re the same.” It’s worth noting that this woman identified as Buddhist, but practiced both. Other people I met were non religious, but still visited temples and shrines as more of a personal ritual

The thing I was told when I was there was that Japanese people are typically born Shinto, marry Christian and die Buddhist, mainly as a reference to which rites are performed at each of those major life events.

@@dalegaliniak607 ah yes, we even had that saying in one version of the episode! It's pretty popular. You might enjoy Ian Reader and George Tanabe's 1999 book "Practically Religious," which takes up that idea.

    • @doctorklockwork

Dale Galiniak I think that’s because Shinto ritual primarily deals with purification and blessings, while Mahayana Buddhism deals with human suffering and death. Hence why marriage is traditionally Shinto and funerals are traditionally Buddhist. Although, more modern Japanese people are opting for western style weddings in churches these days

This is also a phenomenon among Han Chinese people, people could and often do practice ancestral worship with local rites, consider Confucian values, visit Buddhist shrines, use Taoist amulets, etc... even identifying as atheists, people could indulge in practices that may be considered religious, either as a cultural practice or simply for luck

As a Japanese person, I think Japanese people unconsciously count every sacred being in the world as "Shinto countless gods".
That is why we celebrate Christmas, listen to the temple bells, and go to shrines to greet the New Year. Many of us have been taught to eat even every grain of rice because God is in it.

Shinto shrines are more approachable from another religion. It took me many more attempts to be comfortable inside a Buddhist temple. For me it helped to think about the religions wisdom, and not the spiritual.
PS. The uncomfortable feeling of not being allowed to be there was from my own religion, NOT that they didn't allowed me or accept me.

    • @pomtubes1205

Philippine ancient religion (to me, I think) only faintly lingers in folktales and what little myth we have. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if what we call as "pre-colonial Philippine religion" actually is just a blanket term used to describe the different religions that predated Islam or Catholisism in the region. Yet we identify this plethora of religions as a single, unifying religion, unaware of the context that "Filipinos" then identified themselves to different kingdoms and indigenous tribes.
I mean, at one point, Islam was the prevailing religion in the country, extending as far as Manila itself, but this influence of Islam is hardly ever seen in the upper islands of the archipelago, unless you really look at it. So it's a challenge for us Flipinos to even grasp what may have been.

    • @redflags6583

@@pomtubes1205 can't agree with you more. It's more of a common set of beliefs than just one religion (eg Tagalog, Bicol, Bisaya, Manobo, Ilocano, etc peoples all had separate pantheons with similar elements). There's a lot of Indian (and maybe Chinese) influence (diwata for example comes from devata).
As for Islam, it's more of a 15th-16th century thing. Maynila's relationship with Brunei (Brunei took over in 1500) is the primary reason why Islam was seen as far as Luzon, but its main centers were still in Sulu and Maguindanao.
Regardless, it's still important I think for us to look into the religion of the past. Centuries of syncretism have also infused our take of Christianity with pre-colonial concepts (anting anting, for example). An academic look into how religion transformed in the Philippines would be, to put it scientifically, "very neato"

And I think on how that movie came out in 97, and how humanity didn't learn and continued to harm the planet. If Shinto has a scintilla of truth to it, we're overdue a world ending catastrophe. @King Henry VIII Tudor With respect, the thing you misunderstand about our current climate situation is that our chance at turning things around is long past. There were scientists telling us we needed to change our ways back in the early to mid 20th century. History shows quite clearly that we did nothing about those warnings.
To truly understand the climate situation you must understand how many vast and insurmountable problems there are to deal with. For every solution you come up with, I can show you at least two catastrophic situations that will cancel out your efforts.
The ecosystem we depend on has been wrecked, by our own greed and short-sightedness. Scientists tell us we are living in an extinction level event. These are not the claims of a cult; They are the statistical facts. In that light, the panic people are experiencing over climate-disaster is completely justified. Like me, they worry for their future; for their children.
It's a sad, awful situation, but, to be annoyed with people for recognizing what the future holds for us all is, both, futile and counter-productive. Join us and worry about this, too. :-)

@@polyhistorphilomath While I very much appreciated the humour of your comment, it's not contextually accurate.
If a ship is sinking, and many passengers and crew gather to talk about what to do next, we don't call that group a 'cult': We call them very sensible people.
The movement to confront climate-change is not, by definition, a cult. There is no founding leader whose words and deeds are venerated and obeyed. There are no special rituals to practice, other than good science and planning. There are no prophecies; only statistical predictions. And, there is no promise of an afterlife; only the selfless promise of a better life for ALL those who come after.
I think these things make the effort to address climate-change something more heroic than mere cultism.
You still made me laugh out loud though :-)

I like this channel because it presents a religion outside of what most people consider to be a religion. Shinto can be described as a nature religion. That is assigning gods were spirits to things in the natural world. Many of us know about names from ancient Greek or Northern European mythology from popular films/TV. Such as Hercules, Thor and Neptune/Poseidon. Those ancient mythologies were also religions. And those ancient religions included spirits or gods for everything that could be seen in nature, a lot like Shinto.

Interesting, in my homeland, gods and fairies are almost interchangeable like how "kami" is defined.
In my native language the gods and such beings are immortalized into everyday objects found in nature like rocks, the stars, the weather, storms and even in some phrases/idioms.
Each region also has their own version of gods and beings. Yet we all have a fear or a superstition to always address an unfamiliar place by saying "(excuse me) just passing through, just passing through" or something similar. It is to either address to whoever is there, especially the property owner, that the passersby is not trespassing nor being disrespectful.
We also have a superstition or respect that certain structures not made by man, should not be touched (without permission) or disturb or incur a curse or worse.

But in traditions like Shinto the land and the creatures living on it are gods in their own right, who merit respect. This has gotta impact things like history and politics, right? It's a big deal!

Hi, RFB Shinto series co-writer Kaitlyn here! There has definitely been a rise in what scholars are calling the "religious environmentalist paradigm," where a lot of contemporary religions are pivoting more toward eco-friendly messages, including Shinto and Christianity. As for Shinto, you might enjoy Aike Rots's 2017 book "Shinto, Nature and Ideology in Contemporary Japan." I'm thinking about writing an episode specifically on Shinto and environmentalism in the future :)

Heard a Japanese guy say that Shinto isn’t considered “religion” in Japan because it’s a “nature religion.” It has no founder, no sacred scriptures, and whatnot. So the word they use for “religion” doesn’t apply to Shinto, which is why so many people who participate in it don’t consider themselves religious.

    • @yummy8074
      @yummy8074 Рік тому +3

Yes, in fact most of east Asia doesn't cosider themselves religious, because they don't view their "religions" as religious compared to islam or christianity. They consider a religion as a doctrine and when they get labeled as religious, they get a little offended and would think "eww, no, I'm not that".
That applies to other east Asian "religions" such as buddhism, konfucianism, daoism, maybe even hinduism but I'm not sure about that one. They view their "religions" rather as ways of life and philosophies, not just praising a god creator and doing what some book says.
However none can say that these religions/philosophies/ways haven't had an impact on their societies. It shaped their traditions, holidays, their interaction between one another and whatnot.

Kami is probably best translated as "spirit." Living things have personal spirits. Non-living things have little spirits. There are big spirits (what we would call gods) for big, important things. Sometimes the spirits of people live on after the death of the body, and if their descendants venerate them, they can become more powerful too.
(But because the translation of kami=god was established early, there's this weird misunderstanding between cultures.)

One of my favorite belief and aspect of Shintoism is the idea of Tsukumo Gami. A spirit of kami that will be born within objects and tools if said object has had a decent length of longevity. Now it can for both ways, a object can be taken care of an maintained for years which would have a spirit that is benevolent, where as when an object has been mishandled and used with spite, then the spirit would be malevolent. Now let's look at this logically, a tool used by a person over the years, the tool becomes more fitted to that person. This can happen through the craftsman's manner of maintenance, which he or she would customize or orient the tool so it is easier for them to handle. These slight alterations accumulate which makes this tool best for that person but harder for others to use. This maybe one way to see how this concept of Tsukumo Gami could be true.

I wonder if the same can be said for the ancient Romans; would they have considered themselves not to be religious? A sailor who transports gain would probably give an offering to Neptune when he heads to sea, Mercury or Cerese for good grain and business, and to Vesta for a secure household when he is away, whenever he could. Does he have faith in these deities as Christians do in Christ or as the Japanese have with the kami? I have always heard that the Christian faith and view of the divine were seen as weird to the Greek and Norse pagans.

It's crazy to think how many parallels Shinto has with some kinds of European pagan beliefs, especially the Celtic ones; they both believe in a visible world and an 'otherworld' where all the supernatural things are, they both believe that those supernatural being (fae and kame) can be good, bad, or not really either, they both value orthopraxy over orthodoxy, and both of them are believed in by people nominally of no or a different faith - you'll find plenty of Catholics in Ireland who are very much Catholics but also just... believe in Fae, and might follow some little traditions relating to it, Christianised versions or not. Two island nations from totally opposite ends of the Earth have so many parallels, at least to a lay person.
I wonder if Shinto would also serve as an example of how a more paganised Ireland would look? Maybe even the entirety of the Celtic parts of the UK.

I am from Denmark and here, while most consider themselves christian and practices christian traditions, the vast majority does not believe in God, Jesus, miracles etc. I think it has more to do with how as a culture becomes less religious, they shift there view on what religion means. In both Denmark and Japan, the mysticism and myth disappears, leaving religion as nothing more than a set of traditions and stories, which are enshrined in the local culture.

Yes and no. One can say that Christianity/the nuns sort of organised the celebrations, yes. The oldest mentions of the majstång seems to be from the 17th century. By the way, the form of it so scream Christianity. The earlier form, without the cross form seems to have come here in the 14th century from Germany. Apparently people really liked to clad a thing in greens. Kinda sad that the form with lots of rings instead of just two didn't catch on. :(
People still celebrated during the time of midsummer, but the celebrations had a more chaotic form and so, before the nuns came in and organized it. So I suppose our form of midsummer celebrations do have an air of Christianity, yes. Still, people still celebrated already during that time.
Once can say that Christmas and midsummer is the same in that regard: Christianity really, really tried to make those celebrations all about Christianity. They managed better with Christmas than about midsummer, though. Still, people already celebrated during those times. Christianity did try its best to make those days all about their religion, but that doesn't make the traditions themselves necessarily Christian, though.

I have a feeling that shinto is like Christmas in the west. Almost everybody celebrates it, even atheists, because they like giving and receiving presents and it's a tradition that people do once a year together at the end of December. However not everyone who celebrates Christmas is a devoted christian, here where I am from there's a tradition that people go to a church on midnight between 24 and 25 December, but majority of people don't, because they are not interested. But if you went around during that time, you'd still find people even standing outside of churches, because there're enough people who like going to a midnight ceremony on Christmas, but obviously there aren't enough churches for all people in the city anywhere.
In other words it's a tradition with christian roots, but not all who celebrate Christmas as a big event are necessarily christians. Shinto seems similar in a way that this is what Japanese are used to for generations, so they just do it.

An important feature of Japanese spirituality is it’s lack of exclusivity. An individual often worships at Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples interchangeably. 91% of funerals are conducted as Buddhist ceremonies but the same family may keep a mini shrine with a plaque to commemorate the deceased. Most marriages are conducted in Shinto traditions. Japanese couples are often confounded when they seek to have a Christian wedding ceremony and are turned down by a Christian priest or minister because they are not Christian believers. Secular chapels have been set up for people to have a Christian like ceremony to accommodate these couples. Christian missionaries have to learn to understand that exclusive worship in one religion is a foreign concept in Japan. But once converted a Japanese Christian will often adhere very staunchly despite being ostracized by family and society at large.

According to the Pew Research Centre in 2013, upwards of 22% of American Jews identify as Jewish Atheists. For cultural identity-based/indigenous religions like Shinto, Judaism, and even the indigenous Māori traditional religious practices of New Zealand, practicing the cultural rituals and traditions does not need to equate to religious/spiritual adherence.
