So many of these Medieval Mystics seemed to walk a tightrope with "being declared a saint" on one side and "being condemned as a heretic" on the other.
@@Bildgesmythe it’s unfortunate how important these people are yet they are all treated as loonies. For instance Chris Bledsoe is a modern “mystic” that was attacked at all sides by the religiously devout and scientifically strict (both represent belief systems that limit the growth of humanity) alike until he was proven right with the balls of light actually being capable of being witnessed by anyone regardless of who you are. Robert Monroe was another “mystic” but he was really successful due to him knowing that he can cut off those that are more interested in ridiculing him then testing his “powers” (that again, anyone can use). Tom Campbell is essentially his protege that is trying his hardest to blaze the trail in creating a general field theory of reality that truly covers all ground that explains way more than anyone else previously could.
Being on meds absolutely does not prevent one from being a mystic. I have been medicated for bipolar my entire life, and had plenty of mystical visions along the way. Meds have made my life far better, and made me far more capable as a writer and thinker than I ever could have been without them.
I've wondered that my entire life. I really think the mystical life is the next step in human evolution. The next step will be understanding the human consciousness, we are more than advanced apes. The world view of this age is far too small to encompass everything, We don't know what we are, quite yet .. consciousness is the real "unexplored territory" - even more than Outer Space or the bottom of the sea. My guess is that someday science will realize everything is consciousness and that we are all part of the ALL ... Probably, through the study of quantum physics? It might give us some clues. There is nexus to all this, we are just ignorant to it. It has something to do with energy - the flowing white light is energy, first and foremost, it is God's awareness, it flows.... I'd like to be there when we really begin to understand what we human beings really are. Right now? more questions than answers.
Mental Health knocked on my door about 4 weeks ago, I'm glad they did not come in the several months before. I had a treatment order that was lifted after one day. I had to basically explain my reason for evolving in my own life, an infection of all things opened my eyes to acknowledge I must search for a deeper meaning no matter how obsurd my logical, pragmatic side of me resists. I was proud that I responded more humble than I thought I could be. I did however let them know my mental strength is tempered and tested, basically if I've set my mind on something only my own experience will persuade my conclusions. But what an emotional few years it's been, eventually led me to this chanel and the now vivacious quest for knowledge in this area.. I just wish I had started this journey before, that said I would not of had a path as profound if I had found this journey from curiosity alone, having a life crisis of emotion which was finding out I'm a father and now continuing to fight to see my daughter has shown me a depth of self I would not of maybe found otherwise. I'm really surprised no-one that I respect or knows my life journey ie.. Family or friends encouraged this area of truth searching before. Probably hid it from me lol, I've found it now🤣. Me and truth are symbiotic, it's a unbending master, but will lead you to profound realisations. Some people seem to not understand this is not a choice for me, besides I'd choose truth as my master regardless. Peace to all.

I love seeing you cover topics within the Christian milieu. Like many nowadays who find interest or practices in the esoteric/occult, I grew up devoutly Christian but later in life having to turn away from that upbringing after being burned by the religious communities which I found myself within. However, I always found it rather disheartening that - outside the modern interpretations of Christianity which more and more people are finding issue with - the richness of Christian practice from bygone times is almost universally overlooked, the modern sects often assumed or even directly claimed to be the only modes of Christianity. Far aside from that narrative of an unchanging tradition of belief and practice, Christianity has just as much depth and diversity as every other spiritual path. I’m glad you make videos like this one, hopefully they’ll help people understand that historical Christianity has so much more to offer than what we have today! Even though I think I’ll never be able to return to Christianity, I can’t help but find inspiration and a deep admiration for these kinds of topics.

Wonderful episode. A very mystic of mine. As a mystic myself with expiernces since the age of 4. She greatly helps me find my way. As do you Dr. Sledge thank you so much for your work.
You really hit me with the Sledge hammer this time, wow, I was mesmerized, and to end it that way juxtaposed with Mechtilde's failing body still being a conduit for The Light while Marguerite being burned for "lesser crimes", brought a tear to my eye. Mathilde being in the hell of her broken body and still faithful to the end "in spite of being in Hell", reminds me of a line in Blade Runner, where Tyrell is speaking to his cyborg creation Roy Batty the Replicant whose life clock is about to expire: "The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long, and you have burned so very very brightly Roy". Mechtilde burned so hotly, so brightly, I guess she was too hot for the pyre but she still paid a price. I was fascinated. It is so heartwarming to see you do justice to leading spiritual women who have historically been trampled and burned for far too long. Fantastic episode Dr. Sledge.

I loved this information so much. It spoke to my soul. I call myself a flow artist as i dance with lights, colours and sounds. The practice brings with it a profound sense of touching the divine and also is an erotic spirit to my dancing. Flowarts helps to access flowstate and the sense of oneness with the universe. I need to find out more as it feels like vindication for the way I live my life. So excited for the next ep ❤
Beautiful video Justin. I love how much you convey your respect for these mystics even if you are a materialist. It shows that you approach the topic with an openness that many other materialists likely would not do.
Materialism for me means concrete analysis of concrete conditions. There is simply no concrete analysis of concrete conditions involving the sublime without also appreciating the sublime in its context and for its logic. Any materialism that fails to appreciate the sublime should be relegated to the dustbin of history.
@@TheEsotericaChannel wow this is even more of a window. I, of course when hearing that you were a materialist, made some assumptions about that definition that I should not have. I apologize if you felt relegated to a bygone era in that stance. I love the sharing of your own personal philosophy as well. A lot of creators that touch on this stuff either share to much or not at all, about their own philosophy, I think you do a perfect amount..
Dr. Please consider the Liber Novus! Books of footnotes and further notes made by the author as It was being written were just publicised in 2019 as “The Black Books”. I’m a long time viewer and share your academic seriousness; That Book deserves your time.
You're so immensely talented... I sometimes fear reading the books and stories you cover as I wonder if they can ever live up to your touching portrayal of them. Thanks for this one especially.
The content on your channel is truly exceptional! The depth and quality of the information presented are impressive, making each video an enriching and inspiring experience for viewers. Congratulations on the amazing work!
The Rolling Stones wrote and recorded a song about this very thing… Anyone recall it? Sometimes you don’t wanna talk about Jesus You just wanna see His Face…
This is the first video of yours that I have seen but I will definitely watch more. On a personal level, this line hit close to home “any mystic who doesn’t think that they are crazy at some point probably shouldn’t be listened to.” 😂
I believe if you'd just titled it "Spiritual Eroticism" it'd be much more click-batey. I'd recently happened upon an evangelical channel of a young woman and, having taken an interest in Kabbalah (providing a fascinating new perspective on things), my interest was peaked as she went on candidly describing her spiritual experiences; but, it was a week and a different spirit took over her and she repented leaving me a bit puzzled but new insights follow... I could go on but you get the idea. Fantastic video.
@@Sadreplicant I believe she removed the videos I'm referring. I didn't mention this to shame her in any way. I just found it remarkable in context of this video here. It suddenly appears to be more common than it would seem.
This is absolutely fascinating and also helpful for some of my current life difficulties. It also reminds me a bit of Jung's ideas on shadow work. As always, thanks for the great presentation!
Once again, thank you, sir. This, my sister, I would not know, were it not for your efforts.. leaving me feeling less estranged and isolated from those who have gone ahead of me to see my Creator and Lord. Much Love. Many blessings.
Love the Beguines! Regarding this lady mystic and perhaps others, were they the ones who have this idea that cloistered nuns must stay chaste to be brides of Christ? Where did such a notion originate? One must question if celibacy is truly healthy, like the very physical sex and abuse scandals that have rocked the Church for so long. For victims and survivors of such abuse, they are the ones who have truly experienced depths of hell.
Hopefully this reference isn't considered too profane here, but the South Park episode where Cartman starts up a Christian Rock band ("Faith Plus One") he tells the other members that writing songs is easy. All they have to do is take preexisting love songs from regular rock and replace all references to "girl" or "baby" with "Jesus." His band rockets to the top of the charts. I instantly thought of this when Dr. Sledge details the mysticism chapters written when Mechthild was young. ...Early Christian Rock? 🤔
I am deeply influenced by the female mystics, especially after reading Amy Hollywood’s “Sensible Ecstasy” which explores them from the psychoanalytic viewpoint of hysteria. I am glad that the tradition in a broader sense is also not dead. I consider Virginia Woolf for example a genuine mystic
Goddamn Doc, this is definitely one of the more profound mystics you've exposed us to, you seem to have successfully delivered that roller-coaster effect you described cuz I'm just kind of flabbergasted by it all, in a wondrous way. I have to ask though, how in the hell is this not crack-smoking heresy on steroids jumping through a glass door? I couldn't help myself continually shouting heresy half the video, delightfully I might add, and being just as flabbergasted at how she avoided the pyre altogether, let alone be raised to such reverence within the Church. Did everyone just kind of absorb without critically analyzing it? The vibe I'm getting is that the ideas and the imagery were so profound that it more or less creates a disruption in orthodoxy where it can kind of abide in its transcendent beauty, unmarred by petty dogma, where other ideas were immediately consigned to the flames. Yet again I'm in a state of being totally flabbergasted, the arch-heresy it so clearly seems to be so thoroughly delighted its audience that it just kind of gets a pass; it seems to speak to its virtue in and of itself as a mystical work. Thanks as always Doc, you're the goat
@@anniemcmillen940 That's actually a really solid point, this probably kept her work out of wider circulation until she was nearing the end of her life, bravo. Still the reverence truly astonishes me, where other philosophers and mystics get thrown aside she's embraced, despite all these tantalizingly heretical ideas; I guess beauty is its own dogma.
I read one recently I believe called the book of heaven. It was about a women who had sometimes daily encounters with Jesus. I do believe these things are real but at times I wondered if she was suffering schizophrenia, or some kind of mental illness. The thing that made me think this is she could not function in the real world and spent most of her years in her room at the convent in bed. She also seems to speak of Jesus as her lover and at times sensualized the relationship. Her writings, and experiences were recognized by the Catholic Church as genuine which surprised me after reading it. It’s a huge book and mostly repetitive of Jesus either coming to her room or taking her up to heaven at times to teach her and show her the divine realm. There was one time where Jesus would kiss her and spit in her mouth some kind of divine sweet tasting elixir. It was a good read but I have my doubts about her.
I just saw you have merch in the style of black/death metal.. are you a fan?? There’s a LOT of occult and religious themes at play in most of those bands. If you are we might need a whole new channel or series with you going into it 😂 I would kill for that
@@Silent-Speaker In the past I fooled myself into thinking I was "the only one" having these experiences in Christ. What a relief and immense humbling to know this experience with love has been available to us all along! Such deep gratitude for these brave women to confess their Truth in writings. 🙏🌈👑
My Lord, as God. Sink we not into the the Lady of Pain. ThIS moment is the pain.. brought and wrought in the very bottom of the the miraculous'lee'd dead. How many more fingers shall point at the moon? These are the questions that exalt thee beyond and before the beginning. Thou art beyond and before the end and the beginning of Acception, my liege. Know Acception. Peace.
This is the problem Bernini had in portraying the mystical experience of union in Theresa of Avilla without going sexual. For those who lack a spiritual inner life it's a kind of kinky joke. Perhaps it is because Augustine of Hippo was, sadly for many people, arguably a sex addict - his sexuality was indeed problematic for him. For her sexual embodied love was not a problem. What freedom: such is the Love of The Divine - be neutral but have desires as the Divine ordains. We are talking deep radical acceptance. She is amazing and so is your video. Bernard of Clairvaux did God's work in freeing mystics like this lady. Thank you Amen
do you intend to cover the le mystère des cathédrales by fulcanelli? Since it is a modern work i initially figured it was more of less a fake or a joke, but reading through it, it seems quite serious but i am not literate enough to ascertain it's content.

Amazing! Such a profound life of mystical experiences. Just beautiful.

Knowledge revealed to me being repeated later through my phone on UA-cam gives me chills. 27:45
I had just finished the video and I feel like the summary of Mechthild's work shines a light into the vacuity of the mundane existence of us non-mystic laymen. Awesome episode!
Oh i am in love! Thank you.
This really adds into my mind. Beautiful share8ng and teachings
You are such a great speaker! Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
For me the big four are Meister Eckhart, Johannes Tauler, Henry Suso, and Jan Van Ruysbroeck.
All dudes downstream from these women. They're like the patristic fathers downstream of the apostles
You're so immensely talented... I sometimes fear reading the books and stories you cover as I wonder if they can ever live up to your touching portrayal of them. Thanks for this one especially.
And this was the day I unexpectedly learned that Dr. Sledge is also a Twin Peaks fan.
The content on your channel is truly exceptional! The depth and quality of the information presented are impressive, making each video an enriching and inspiring experience for viewers. Congratulations on the amazing work!
The Rolling Stones wrote
and recorded a song about this very thing…
Anyone recall it?
Sometimes you don’t wanna talk about Jesus
You just wanna see His Face…
Subbed but no notifications. Imagine that. So grateful for every post, we need all knowledge.
This is the first video of yours that I have seen but I will definitely watch more. On a personal level, this line hit close to home “any mystic who doesn’t think that they are crazy at some point probably shouldn’t be listened to.” 😂
Fascinating, and I'm buying her book!
This was absolutely fascinating! Thank you for bringing this to us, your presentation of this material is outstanding!
What a fascinating take on communion with the divine! I love our erotic prophets
Wow she sounds amazing I can’t wait to read her
I believe if you'd just titled it "Spiritual Eroticism" it'd be much more click-batey.
By any chance do you remember the name of channel/video?
@@Sadreplicant I believe she removed the videos I'm referring. I didn't mention this to shame her in any way. I just found it remarkable in context of this video here. It suddenly appears to be more common than it would seem.
Thanks!
Amazing video. Thank you.
Anyone here ever heard of a nun named Bernadette Roberts? She was kind of my introduction into the general concept of mysticism.
Thank for this upload. The Beguine and Mechtild are new to me.
amazing episode, thank you so much for your work!
I enjoyed this one very much. Thank you!
Yet more wonderful intrigue. Thank you.
tears for fears. thank you for this discussion of empowerment.
Oh yeah, I think Type O Negative wrote a song about this
he never disappoints
Blimey. You go girl! However did she not get burnt?? Wonderful. Thank you.
Hopefully this reference isn't considered too profane here, but the South Park episode where Cartman starts up a Christian Rock band ("Faith Plus One") he tells the other members that writing songs is easy. All they have to do is take preexisting love songs from regular rock and replace all references to "girl" or "baby" with "Jesus."
His band rockets to the top of the charts.
I wonder if the fact that she wrote in a dialect of German worked in her favor...possibly obscurity as well.
@@anniemcmillen940 That's actually a really solid point, this probably kept her work out of wider circulation until she was nearing the end of her life, bravo. Still the reverence truly astonishes me, where other philosophers and mystics get thrown aside she's embraced, despite all these tantalizingly heretical ideas; I guess beauty is its own dogma.
i would marry this man. justin babe, your content got me through some dark shit. youre a real one
Thanks
Thank-you for sharing your knowledge with me sir. I truly appreciate your philosophying(?) and narration of the material.
Fascinating!
Fascinating, as usual. Great vid.

Committing prayer to rhyme is powerful. There's a reason magic spells are put to rhyme.
Saint Maria Maddalena de’ Pazzi would be right up your alley, i think.
22:13 wooooah this girl didnt hold back, you go girl..
She certainly shows why feminine sexuality is the stronger in vivid imagery..
I think that is in part based on that it is also the stronger in its carnal manifestation as well.
@@AlejandroMS67 yeah I've also noticed this ,didn't want to brag though..😁

Makes me thing of Robert Anton Wilson's writing about the Night Mother. Who he claims to have met in a fever dream, and who then saved his life.
This was fantastic. thank you!
This was a really cool video!
I just saw you have merch in the style of black/death metal.. are you a fan?? There’s a LOT of occult and religious themes at play in most of those bands. If you are we might need a whole new channel or series with you going into it 😂 I would kill for that

In order to have a coherent understanding of McGinn’s work, do I absolutely have to start with Volume 1, or can I just dive in to any volume I wish?
It's best to start with vol 1 but I'm sure you could get things out of volume ii just by itself
