This brings back so many memories. I bought a brand new 1.6 205 GTI back in 1986, and in the showroom in chiswick London was a Turbo 16....and what a sight it was!!!! Loved the 205 GTI as the handling was on another level...Probably the most fun car I have ever owned and I have owned a lot! Thanks for the memories...
There were two that were sold by GM at auction. Both were owned by Lotus back when GM owned Lotus. Lotus used the two Turbo 16 a test cars for testing very early rear wheel steering. Another fantastic video Hyphen!
I’ve waited years for anyone on UA-cam to do a drive video of a T16 and then JT-S “nocks it out of the park” with wonderfully worded & beautifully shot peace and even relatively quickly driven considering it age/exorbitant value. Now I’m waiting on “tender hooks” for the other content from your European excursion, ISSIMI just keeps on upping the game when it comes to cool & unique car content.
16 WRC stage wins, 2 consecutive manufacturers titles, 4 consecutive European Rallycross Championship titles, and 2 Paris Dakar victories. Everywhere this car went, it dominated.
The 205 16 is one of the cars that reminds us all that as things get faster, more computerized, automatic and *gag* EV-- where we really need to go is back to things like this. Quick but not blistering, engaging and most of all rewarding.
Very well put together, love this car, thanks Derek. This car was so outrageous even back then ; a true boy-bedroom poster car. Great work again Issimi - Derek, cheers!
205 GTI and Turbo 16 are probably the best looking small cars in the history. That body design was just perfect and dynamic. First generation VW Golf GTI was pretty close though. Somehow Peugeot never captured the same magic with 205's successors. Sure, Lancia Delta Integrale was a legend and now it's an icon but if you look at the styling it wasn't nearly good looking as the 205.
I was just out in my 1.9 Gti earlier on today, the first time in a long time that the weather was actually sunny and warm!! They are a brilliant car, the only thing my car has in common with the T16, apart from the Peugeot badge, is the colour 😀
Another great episode Hyphen! My dad was stationed in Germany from 85-90, and we saw plenty of 205s and many GTis though we never saw one of these unicorns.
Or a lot of other countries, while they're unfortunately automatic only! Indeed they should be on sale basically everywhere and have manual gearboxes as standard! (For example, here in Ireland, we can't buy them, Lotus cars, cars like the Nissan 350Z, 370Z, GTR etc or the recently launched on this side of the pond Genesis brand in Ireland and many other cool models! When they can in the U.K., and while for example, I COULD buy many of the cars I mentioned in Northern Ireland or England etc, but first I'd have to pay in pounds which are worth more than the Euro, then pay VRT, VAT and other taxes and in some cases pay twice the price they do in the U.K., while many of the sporty cars we have gotten were either withdraw fully or partially not long after launching or are missing, specs, engines or gearboxes other countries get, in particular the U.K.! 😯😂🩲😀🤘
@@MOSSFEEN But you said 309 GTI16. There was a 160hp 16v version of the 309 using the same MI16 engine as in the 405 MI16. The 405 MI16 and also the Citroen BX 16v started with aluminium block 1,9 16v engine. And then the 405 moved to a 2.0 16v engine after that. I have a BX 16v alu 1,9 16v engine waiting in my garage for my 205 1,9 GTI. For once I get the time to restore it.
As cute as Hyphen is, and as gorgeous and informative these videos are, I love to see him the most with Cammisa. I feel like we see Derek at his most fun when we see Cammisa constantly knocking him off his game. We are absolutely blessed to have both Drives with Issimi and Carmudgeon with Hagerty to say the the least.
Loved the video, but with headphones during the static drive-by clips/soundbytes I only get the car audio in the left channel. Everything else was amazing though.
I'm sure I've never seen one on the road in my lifetime, even back in the day. Adjusting for inflation these cost the equivalent of £72,000 today (£25,000 in 1986). They are worth over £300,000 now though!
Beautiful video but the commentary had a lot of repetitions (we're told 3 or 4 times that the T16 had nothing in common with the normal 205 for instance)
I like how heavy on driving impressions this video was. Too much auto content on the internet simply rehashes the same boring model history that anyone can read on Wikipedia. It is the actual driving impressions that the video format lends itself to, and which we mere mortals watch these videos to get a glimpse of.
5:20 "Moved from being transversely mounted front wheel drive, to be mounted amidships and with four wheel drive..." _Amidships_ is quaint jargon, but is the 'rear mid-engine' position still transverse, or was it also turned north-south? Was the front suspension changed from MacPherson strut, to double wishbones? The rear suspension was obviously changed from transverse torsion bars - but to what?
I would suggest the Davide Cironi review as a better review of this 205 T16. Not only being better shot but he gives a more knowledgeable explanation. Whilst this is a romantic review of a car America never got and a very Cars and Coffee view of it.
If i owned this car i would HAVE to turn that boost up at least somewhat. Crank it to 300-350bhp? Otherwise it is being held back so much from its true potential (like well under 50%!) In reality due to the extra weight of the AWD system it isn't a huge difference in performance compared to the standard/normal 1.9ltr 205GTI that it should be. Obviously if that boost was turned up just slightly that would be an entirely different matter!
Yes though the R5 turbo was about 5 years prior to this, in which time a lot had happened going from group 4 to group B and introduction of 4wd. The R5 turbo didnt really have "any chance" once the rules changed, and Renault never went for a 4wd design.
When someone is searching for a video of this car, they already know everything about it, so your comments are irrelevant...and distracting. Video and sound only please.

And because of the equipment onboard, one of them had a PTS (Peugeot Talbot Sport) engine kit, bringing power up to 300 hp.

the whole peugeot lineup of the era remains handsome, timeless designs. Highlights include the 106 GTI, 405 Mi16x4 , 406 Coupé and so many others

Yes, the looks! Extremely well designed! One of the coolest of them all!
These videos are the perfect balance of Harry’s Garage and Petrolicious and I love it!
Very well put together, love this car, thanks Derek. This car was so outrageous even back then ; a true boy-bedroom poster car. Great work again Issimi - Derek, cheers!
205 The Sacred Number ❤️
Emotions, back then. Today, nearly nothing. Great video. Thank you!
Props to Derek for pronouncing Peugeot correctly! You, Sir, are a true man of education!
I guess you mean “not too bad” still not correct but close enough.
Rubbish pronunciation imho.
I've only heard it pronounced this way
Being French is what makes me say what I said. He’s doing a good job.
@@judahinbabylon considering he's not French, you have to give him credit where credit is due. Most people hopelessly butcher the pronunciation of it.
Really glad you went back to narrating, must be a pain to do but i for one really appreciate it.

My dream car! Owed nine 205GTI'S amazing machine's!
My childhood dream car! I’m so happy to see one being driven
Even the 205 gti is a crazy good car!

Fantastic video from DTS once again. Story was told extremely well and the videography was phenomenal
Great video. I would love more shots of the interior. The gauges specifically. Old gauges are awesome
Best car EVER! this is top of my list for lottery win. Love the 205, what a lovely chassis, pretty little car. Brilliant.
Thank you for showing us another unknown classic.
my favorite car of all times!
i love it.
Thank you for existing!
Love your style Hyphen, your writing just emphasizes the cinematography so well. Even if you did say rotatey ;)
Love these episodes and even though I have never driven the car it looks fun to drive.
What a great video. This guy should be on Top Gear
This thing is ultra rare. Never seen one or heard about one being for sale.
There is one for sale right now on autoscout for 350.000 on dutch license plate
when the French made cool cars! Now the only one left is the Alpine.... which can't be bought in the US

Unfortunately that is a marvelous car
Can't buy those cars in Éire,@@tanner1ie?
Is that due to exhaust emissions requirements, or other driver and/or pedestrian safety legislation?
Plenty other left to review besides the Alpine :)
"Forbidden fruit of the highest order" ... Proceeds to start and drive one. Talk about the ultimate flex 💪 🥲🤣
Would love to get Hyphens impressions on a 205 GTI 1.9 and a 309 MI16. I imagine both of them being more fun and involving than the iconic Turbo 16
@@MOSSFEEN Same engine right?

Imagine having a garage with a 205 Rallye, CTi, GTi 1.6, GTi 1.9, T16 and a T16 Evo 2. Picking which ever to drive on that particular day.
Can you PLEASE Do a comparison test between this car and Renault 5 Turbo!!??
The best Peugeot ever made!
im 30 seconds in and I really like the new videography! nice work, gents!
I’ve always wanted one of these, but all I can afford are some 1:64 versions.
Looks like just another compact without it's war colors :D
Just your average European econobox.....
7:46 chills
Thanks "Hyphen". You could teach a class.
Gosh nice review! Quite a rare car by our days.
Epic. Would have liked more drive train talk, and more engine bay B roll.
Loved the video, but with headphones during the static drive-by clips/soundbytes I only get the car audio in the left channel. Everything else was amazing though.
You need to change the thumbnail to a side shot because this video deserves more views

The gearbox comes from the Citroën SM. I’d love to see this channel do a video on the SM.
Beautiful video but the commentary had a lot of repetitions (we're told 3 or 4 times that the T16 had nothing in common with the normal 205 for instance)
I wish Peugeot sold cars from this era in the states, I wouldn't mind a 205 gti. A T16 would never be affordable.
We need to put DT-S in a TVR! Although I don't know whether they can be legally imported to the US.
Great video but I'm waiting for a Stratos which made such an impact of Derek

La France tous est dans la finesse et efficacité de pilotage 😎😎😎 405 t16 pikes peak 🤟🤟🤟
Next up: Renault 5 Turbo II (1983-1985)
J.Camisa did it recently, no?

I know they aren't directly related, but this car looks a lot like the Renault R5 Turbo, which was similarly modified.

The Group B car that beat Audi and Lancia twice for the manufacturers title '85 and '86.
... which is mentioned in the video. 😉
Looks like you shot a 10 minute video on a 100m stretch of road :D
He was ragging the nuts off of it ,i had to look away 👀
Call it the Turbo-16 now, because it's been Hyphenated.
Rally pilots stayed on breaks and acceleration in corners to keep turbo spinning.
GIGACHAD car
Never heard of a Peugeot 403 🤔
We need Jason Camisa

Poogeot?
Its ugly i like the standard 205 1.9 GTI better for its clean looks , no need for wide body arches on a 205

such a wonderful car in a really lame review
you need a better presenter
