The Lancia Delta Integrale is not (just) a hot hatch - ISSIMI Spotlight feat Jason Cammisa - Ep. 05

- To call the Lancia HF Delta Integrale a hot-hatch is unfair. At worst, it’s the hot-hatch. At best, it’s so far above and beyond most hot-hatches that it’s something entirely different.
Thanks to sanctioning-body rule changes, Lancia was left without a rally car for the 1987 season. Starting with the seven-year-old Delta hatchback, it created the winningest WRC car of all time: the Delta won a total of 46 WRC events, winning an unprecedented six consecutive championships.
Its success is due to many factors, but most of all perseverance and continual evolution, culminating in the Deltona: the ultimate Delta. This Evoluzione 1 model, seen here as a “Martini 5” special edition, was capable of drama-free back-road performance often compared to the Porsche 959. Widely regarded as the fastest twisty-road car of its time, it’s barely catchable today.
The Evo is nicknamed “Deltona,” by the Italians, and means “Big Delta.” The Evoluzione combines the Delta’s gorgeous Giugiaro-penned looks with ridiculous six-inch fender flares, giving it the most bulldog-ish stance of any of the Deltas.
There was an Evolution 2, which had bigger wheels and a new engine management system, but it was hot homologated for WRC.
Featured in this episode is a Martini 5, the special-edition Evolution 1 made to celebrate the Delta’s fifth consecutive WRC win. It also features a pronunciation guide: how to pronounce Giorgetto Giugiaro.

I am a simple man: I see Lancia - I click like.
my dad used to own one.... broken overheating rusting POS..... but yeah... i came from that kind of heritage... hence why all my car is the best of its class...
I'm sitting here wondering, "why don't we have cars that look this good...today?" 🤔
I am a simple man: I see Cammisa - I click like.
I'm going to say it again....CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED CHANNEL!
yeah it look too much professional that cudnt believe this channel has only 64k subs
Yes he did a very good HW a rare achievement on youtube.
Unfortunately he remember me on the old good times when I actually had a Evo 1 :/
Couldn't agree more
Jason's interviews are by far the most under-rated. Now that he is doing video's on Hagerty also....Maybe he will get his proper dues
It's not underrated. It's very well rated. The problem is that it's not as popular to the masses.
From an italian, your pronunciation was almost perfect! I simply hate those "fan" who say "Lansia". In italian L'ansia means anxiety... Brrr
Concordo pienamente Michele. Ne sento di tutti i colori qui negli USA. Un saluto da un italiano ad Atlanta.
To be fair, if you're driving a Lancia slowly, you're going to deal with quite a lot of L'ansia.
Funny thing is that in Indonesian language if you say "Lansia" its an abbreviation for old people in Indonesian lol. Lan = "Lanjut" meaning to follow or old, Sia = Usia meaning age. So Lansia = Old age
Oppure Fewawi anzichè Ferrari :-)
@@thegirthquake8574 Mat Watson is the worst at pronunciation
Getting an 037 just for context . You’re the man, Jason !
I was thinking the exact same thing
i think that one is Walter Röhrls one he drove to win
That wasn't a 037, that was THE 037, the one that actually won the championship, Issimi found the car in a warehouse
@bpfifa08 My all time favourite car and the greatest driver in history.
The deepest and most passionate car show on UA-cam according to me.
Spotlight is the perfect 'drop everything and go watch' show. It deserves the UA-cam Emmy.
Amen
Here here
Awesome.
Yes
People look at me like I'm crazy when I tell them that the delta integrale is my dream car. I don't care at all 😍
Same... I still want one.
These days you're lucky to get a reaction out of anyone automotive related.
The current crop of vehicles is so uninspired and boring.
Why would anyone younger get excited about cars when they have become appliances.
The Integrale is a throwback to an era when cars mattered and very few other than Porsche are still pushing.
A fewer still within reach of the common person.
Those that look at you crazy know absolutely nothing about cars!
I owned a Tipo 16V with the same engine no turbo awesome car can only imagine how good an Integrale is which was my late brothers dream car.
You are not crazy I had Evo 1 back in time but unfortunately I was due situation forced to sell it :/
Back in time it was the ultimative vehicle nowadays you can buy a faster, nicer car but I still want one.
The part with Luca was the best !
Wow these about 20 years ago in the UK were going for about $20 K USD.
£50 k plus now
Who is luca anyway?
@@maybelive765 He lives upstairs from me.
@@martinhowell5775 integrale martini 5 evo’s are 150k not 50 😊 only very few where made.
@@peearne I made that comment a year ago
Great to have an American actually do their research before banging on about this fantastic car, you are a credit!
Someone's a prejudiced European elitist ass... 😑
This channel is so damn underrated!!!
Thank you, Jason, for pointing out the importance of pronunciation. I’m sure there are people in this day and age who consider such things trivial and pedantic; but it’s really a matter of respect. Details are always important.
It was 1996, and I remember one of my classmates' older brother coming to pick him up at school driving this exact car, the "Deltona Martini Racing"... Wet dream of a then teenager...
Thanks Jason Cammisa, aka Giasone Shirt 😆🔥🙃
Me: Great - now I want an Integrale!
*Looks at prices*
Me: Well, at least I can drive it in Forza...
Tschimbo 12 Dirt 2 is a proper environment for Lancias!
Get a diecast model. 24 or bigger. The next best thing.
Geeze that clip of the RS200 at 3:00 is kind of chilling. Hadn't seen that one before.
That's probably the most infamous crash in rally history. Three people died, 30 more were injured, and ten more cars would crash that day. Portugal was a perfect storm of Group B cars at the height of how stupidly fast they were, and completely out of control spectators. The end was inevitable after that: www.carthrottle.com/post/wodk7lo/
I knew about the incident but had never seen the video of it, I don't gasp at videos but this made me do so, loudly.
The three people that where killed a mother and her two children
@@MattNukem Peugeot also found a few fingers in their car in the same rally.
It's hard to watch.
kids are the best they laugh at everything, Luca was laughing at his name pronounced in a funny way and it melted my heart
Same here! ❤️
It's always a pleasure to see somebody who is passionate and also knows how to prononciate, glad that I can still watch your work. Thank you Jason!
Bravissiomo with your pronounciations! Love these videos Jason.
The last few minutes of this video really drive home how fantastic these cars really are… I’m so happy that I managed to pick one up for myself.
12:55 - you were not kidding Jason, that is one serene/quiet engine.
I don't kid. Ever. I'm always serious. (Except when I'm not.) But seriously you can barely hear the engine over all the interior squeaks and rattles. 😝
Right? I was so surprised
Well to be fair if you put a straight pipe (and do a ECU tune to make it work just right) the sound really starts to come out of that engine. And it sounds glorious. But yeah, the factory exhaust it's just too quiet.
TBH, I don't really like crazy loud engines, but this really surprised me. No wonder Jason said it was made for a luxury sedan.
It damned well gets down the road though. I like the choice of special stage, themed roads.@JasonCammisa
"You can't be an expert if you don't take the time to learn how to pronounce simple names" - Jason Cammisa.
Alright then Jason. Let's see how you pronounce "Subaru"... Find's Downshift episode 25... Mother of God. You even pronounce Subaru correctly. Well done, sir.
That driving video at the end shows the car prowess well
Good content well researched. I have owned my evo2 since 2003 when it was a relatively cheap car at less than £10k. Still love it 18 years later. Cheers.
I bought my evo 1 July 2003 and paid £10000 😳 still have it can’t find anything better 🚘
Also Jason you need to get a stratos, a 037 and S4 all in stradale form and make an hour long video. I am from Europe and familiar with WRC, F1, WSC, and DTM lore and I have to see watching videos from the perspective of an American is just so refreshing and original! Make it happen Jason!
How did I miss this episode for a year and a half? I've been craving an EVO I or II since the 90's. Way to go yet again ISSIMI.
This has turned into my favorite thing on UA-cam.
Please make an entire series of POV videos on cool roads just like that last scene.. absolutely gorgeous road!
The disconnect between the ass hauling and the lack of noise is stunning. Cammisa's the best. I don't usually watch the driving at the end, but I did on this one
Love Jason's sense of humor and his knowledge of automotive industry. Thank you, sir! 😀
IMHO Jason Cammisa and Ezra Dryer are the two best automotive journalists working today
One of the greatest cars ever made...pretty much created the mega hatchback Turbo craze that every manufactures made in the 80s. All of them
Even as someone with zero interest in "hot hatches", that was a great video. Thanks, Jason!
Man WHERE WERE YOU ALL THOSE TIME.
UA-cam NEED GUYS LIKE YOU.
I'M JUST HOOK ON YOUR CHANNEL
Love the driving footage at the end!! It actually captures the driving position and sou ds of an Italian car. I've never driven a Lancia, but the driving portion reminds me of when I drove an old 88 Alfa that I was planning on buying. Amazing channel!!
this video is a masterpiece of work. Lancia Delta is the Queen of the Rallye No one can stand against that Beautifull monster.
I love how it's exciting, fast and engaging without a bizarre horsepower figure! Great show as always.
Kudos for pronouncing Lancia properly. I know someone who owns one that didn't know he was mis-pronouncing the name.
It's cool to see this car get so much love now. But also, I will never be able to afford one now.
Im a simple guy, i see a video with a Delta Integrale, I LIKE IT!
The S4 perished with Henri Toivonen and his Co-driver Sergio Cresta. They deserve mention by name. 2 of the greatest in Rally history.
I very much appreciate the fact you took the time to study the right pronunanciation, not so common for a car enthusiast!
Drive at the end was icing on the cake!
Agreed
Jason, your reviews are the most entertaining and informative reviews on UA-cam. Please do more! Please do more! What are you waiting for, please do more!
At first I thought this was just another car channel one video later I left everything that I was doing and just started watching your videos.
Ohhhh, that Tam hyphen Scott and his convoluted crushed baby skull ideas
Agreed.
Thank you, for taking the time to celebrate a truly Italian icon forgotten by Italians, and FCA... 🙏🏻
looking forward for more Lancia contents! 🤙🏻
Did Italians really forgot? I know the car is unknown abroad but I thought in Italy had reached legendary status. I watched Davide Cironi's videos and he seems aware of its popularity.
Souljastation 5 only one Lancia is for sale now, the Y, that is develop out of the punto/500 floor pan ( had3 of this) that is actually one of the Italian best sellers but that’s all, there was a couple in the recent years, ugly rebadging of unwanted Chrysler.
Is a simple if nobody ask, there’s no need of producing.
Delta is the Lancia history flagship, but the history behind it is impressive... and as Italians we have short memory.
Jason, you are true short format documentary treasure.
Thank you Lucca, please remember, you just restored our faith in future generations having love and respect for amazing cars, history and performance. 😎 Auguri
When I was little I used to love watching group B... seemed like every race it was crash,.. cut to commercial,. It was unbelievable how people would literally stand there while a car at its complete limit would slide by on gravel.. 2 inches from they're legs.. wish we still had this but with safer spectator regulation. Love the content always informative.. and GREAT car
Holy crap the way that car takes those hairpins at the end... That whole segment had me going "ah shit that was way too fast, he's gonna fly off the road now, poor car!" and it just went around the corner no problem, no fuss, not even tire squeel!
I just watched this video at 10:30pm and immediately felt the urge to take my 8v out for a blast through the mountains. Feeling better now.
HOW TF have I not seen this video before??? Probably the BEST video I've seen explaining the Delta and it's history. Well done.
Also, you're saying I need to remove the balancer shafts from the engine of my evo? nice...
3:24 "it was just too dangerous"
Isle of Man:HOLD MY BEER...
my cousin used to drive one of these, he even took me on a short ride, once.
unfortunately I was too young to really appreciate it or understand what's so special about that car.
BUT I can say, I once sat in one ;-)
AND when I was born, my father drove me out of the hospital in an Opel Manta =)
I don't know how many times I've watched this episode, but I enjoy it every time. Cammisa, you're doing it right. Please continue.✌️❤️🙂
Deserves a lot more subs. Underrated channel.
Jason is the BEST car enthusiast presenter out there. Bar none!. The Integrale is just the type of car he will own!.
Thank you for mentioning Abarth! Abarth engineers are behind ALL of racing Fiat, Alfa and Lancia since early 1970's.
First time watching, now I'm a lifetime subscribed fan of THIS CHANNEL!!!💀💀
Jason I know you haven't exactly dropped off the face of the planet, but it is great to see you and hear your voice again. You are always a pleasure to watch, very down to earth and relatable. Cheers sir, Michael in Toronto.
one of the gems of 90's car amazing style
One of the best Delta videos seen ..Regards.. a Fellow Deltista from Australia
I love how this man love's the cars, because I have the same passion. Jason rules.
Lancia Delta Integrale is My all times Favorite Rally car ! Absolute Legend!
Thank you Jason for this video! It brings so many memories from my childhood!
Just Great production All around😄👍
Amazing review and history. I loved that boy Luca at the end.😍
This videos are so good. And the final bit is always exquisite!! Thank you guys! We need to share this with the world!!
Jason, your sir should be commended the first guy ever (apart from ex-Lancia) employees to pronounce everything integrale related correctly. Bravo, keep doing what your doing my man - your content and delivery is superb 👌🏻
New subscriber. Thanks so much for the great video! Loved that you included your son in the video! You brought 15 minutes of joy to my life!
Thanks, greatest video ever about this Lancia era.
That gauge cluster is the most perfect one ever created
Dear Jason I believe another reason for Delta's success was its driver's roster. Lancia employed the 2 flying Finns Kankkunnen and Alen, Miki Biasion and Didier Auriol.
Holy hell, I knew these things were cool but I didn't realize just how awesome they are!
You are so right about pronunciations. Not only of Italian companies/brands, but French, German, Japanese, etc. So “Nikon” (the camera manufacturer) is NEE-kon, for example.
ISSIMI is quickly becoming one of the best automotive youtube channels. Keep it up Mr Sandler and -Scott!
That is a fabulous Martini 5 you have there with you. I'm torn between Martini 6 and Blu Lagos on the top of my wish list. The Mitsubishi Evo, Subaru, Escort RS Cosworth et al are all icons; the 'Deltona' will always be
the icon of icons.
Finally an American (English?) who's capable of pronunce Italian names!
Luca is shining, what a wonderful young man.
The sequel to Big Daddy at the end was heartwarming. Seriously though, keep up the great work Jason!
What a BRILLIANT video!! Grew up with an RC version of this thanks to which Lancia was more desirable to me than a Countach
Absolutely love your work mate. You are my new favourite American car journalist. The Delta Integrale Evo 2 is my absolute favourite car in the world. This piece was brilliant!
This channel deserves far more views, subscribers and likes.
Glad this came up in my recommended. Now I gotta go back & watch the rest of your stuff.
I love this. CORRECT PRONUNCIATION! And it is - Lancia, Abarth, Thema, all bang-on. Oh, those lazy people from a certain well-known TV programme/Amazon series - curses on them. This is how to do it. Children - listen, and learn.
Jeez, I love those crazy Italians! They will out crazy and outfox anyone to win and in the process make amazing machines that become legendary and Lancia is the best at it. I love that this was their 4th WRC Championship winner and a 6 time one too. What a machine!
Looking at "views count", I sadly have to remember Sergio Marchionne.. He was thinking Lancia name did mean almost nothing to the world apart from older Europe. This video should have been viewed millions of times.
That driving video at the end shows how stable it is
THANK YOU on the names pronunciation. I'm always annoyed by the "...or whatever his name is, I know I'm butchering it" excuse. It LITERALLY takes seconds to look up.
This, the Lancia Delta Integrale & the Ferrari F40 are the to best road going cars ever built to this day. July 2021
as an Italian, you really pronounced it right, well done!!
A few years ago I used to watch VehicleVirgins.
Now I watch SavageGeese and ISSIMI.
I have risen.
God I love this channel! Jason proves to me with everything he touches, why he’s the reason I started liking and researching cars
This is my new favorite show! Thanks for great material!
Props for the correct pronunciation! At last!
Wow, what a legend, both Jason and the Car
Jason: It's _the_ hot hatch
Peugeot 205 GTI: *Am I a joke to you?*
205 gti is one of the best hoy hatch, but to me it doesb't hold a candle to the delta, given my username though, i think i'm a bit biased.
Its actually like the first Superhatch 20 years in advance. Like what is an Rs3 or an A45 amg today.
Turbo awd hatch with over double the horsepower amount of concurrent of the time. normal fwd hothatch like 205 309 and golf gti or kadett gsi had beetwin 110 and 160 bhp.
Closest thing to it at the time where all rally homologation cars build copying lancia receipt. Escort costworth, 323 gtr, pulsar gti-r. And without a hatch lancer evo and wrx sti.
Audi Sport Quattro : I won Pikes Peak with a brunette behind the wheel ... I'm the hottest hot hatch
@@porsche911235 she won even though she wasn't allowed to practice as much as all the other drivers for "showering" one of the officials with gravel in her first training run. She wasn't even allowed to drive the car to the startline of the race. The mechanics pushed the car. But i wouldn't call the Audi a hot hatch, more like a "fast back"?
@@nirfz I didn't knew Michèle was this rag ;)
Audi Sport quattro : I'm very Hot and winter is my bitch, who am I ?
A hot "lift back" ? Oh god, I don't know who I am ...
Wait, I'm a compact, I made surgery to loose 12 inches and I have big tits faraway of my front axle ...
I'm lost ...
Ok, I went on the internet and I found out : I'm a midsize liftbacks (a type of hatchbacks) relatively popular, in Europe.
So yes, I'm a fucking hardcore HotHatch with huge tits and I kickass :)
It was very very rare to ser one in the street in the late 90s and mid 80s, but as a kid I remember looking to the owner and thinking “How cool is that guy!”
Absolutely one of my all time favorites! Martini livery! Perfect!
This was a fantastic video. If Jason taught a course in college, his class would be SRO. He is a master journalist. Excellent
Lancia remains my fav car company. its sad when you see what they make today.
Bravo Signor Cammisa, and thank you for making me feel like an idiot for not buying one of these while I resided in Italy, when it would have been cheaper and relatively easy. I challenge you to find and do a video on the Delta Integrale’s sister (maybe half-sister), the Alfa Romeo 155 Q4…
That driving at the end was hypnotic
