I used to go to downtown Cascais (were i live) and see the cars in person (Rally de Portugal - yes....that one were people were crazy and in front of cars): the R5, the 205, the FordRS200, the quattro, the Delta, and before that, the Escorts and etc. They made the ground shake, and the sound was....music, pure "power" music. Our passion for Rallys, and F1 was immense, and we all dreamed of driving those cars. Those were the days. Really. Ps: not to mention motorcycles and the 2 stroke 500´s.....
You have to give it to Renault, they made some of the most awesomely bonkers cars ever. This one, the Clio V6, the Megane R26R and of course my favorite of all, the Espace F1. Ok that was just a one-off prototype, but it was actually fully functional and driveable. I guess will probably be another generation or two before we see another idea that could even approach its madness.
@@mike_oe Of course I don't forget Alpine. But if we talk about the original Alpine, it wasn't really Renault, and it wasn't a crazy idea like the above, just a perfectly engineered sports car.

I loved this car as soon as I read about them in car magazines in the 80's. James Bond helped make this car famous in the movie "Never Say Never Again" as the female baddie chased him around in a red one of these. I just wish that we got cars like this imported to the US. Thanks.
Great video and production! The R5 Turbo2 is amazing to drive. We imported 4 of them back in 84/85. Three had the upgraded 185hp kit with 3 piece Gotti wheels and the fourth was a beast!.... 250hp with adj turbo boost, Devil exhaust, aluminum roof & doors, race seats, 5 point harness, upgraded brakes, 3 piece Gotti, Momo steering wheel, shortened gearing- top speed was only 135mph. Weight was around 1,750lbs and it handled like a slot car. Mulholland Drive and Ortega highway where a blast in that car! I heavily regret selling that one.
Interesting. My 83 R5 Turbo 2 weighs 2,260 lb with all 26 gallons of fuel on board. I wonder where they cut 500 lb out of the car you mentioned which I assume is a 8221 Turbo Evo variant. There's not too many places to shave weight. Even the aluminum roof, hatch and doors of the 8221 cars are known to weigh just 30 lbs less than the steel bits they replaced. Even with aluminum suspension A arms, lexan windows and removed interior I struggled to see where 500 lb would be removed. The lightest Turbo I've heard of weighed a little over 2000 lbs. But the dream of a 1,750 lb R5 Turbo is a good one... I'd love to experience that car!

I worked for a company that converted gray market cars to u.s. legal in SoCal in the early 80’s. Fun times driving Porsche’s, Ferrari’s, BMW’s. Then along comes this curious little French car. Fastest car I had ever driven 0 to 100 mph. Past 100 mph the car was a bit sketchy to keep in a lane on the freeway. Short wheelbase and a short lock to lock steering made you pay full attention. In a Lamborghini, Ferrari they were just starting to wake up after 100 mph. Most of the super cars in the 80’s would actually top out in the 170 range but manageable with handling. The R5 was built for rally racing only. Quick speed and turning. I do not remember going much over 120mph. Didn’t want to crash a customers car!
Good explaining about the engine placement, except... The original R5 had the engine in front on a longitudinal orientation, that is correct, but it's rather a front-midship engine, as it's placed behind the front axle with the gearbox on front of it. The trick was turning the engine around and mounting the gearbox from the Renault 30, which sitted on front of the axle.
Thank you so much for this episode. First of all you had in my tears as I was laughing so much...and I’m French! Second because I still remember the first one I saw in my city as a child, running from one street to the next to have a chance to hear the turbo kicking in at the next traffic light, thanks to heavy traffic at the time! So thank you so much, you made my day!! 👍👍👍
I recall when the R5 was first written up in automobile magazines. A neighbor had a Le Car and I could just imagine that sized vehicle on a rally course with huge power.
I remember seeing one of these racing a red Italian car through the streets of Providence back in the early 80's. I wanted one then, and still want one.
Jason, you need to lift the hood on a regular Renault 5, the transaxle is in front of the engine, not behind it. The powertrain of the regular R5 is basically that of the R4, which like the early R5 had the shifter in the middle of the dash, controlling a long rod that goes over the engine and twiddles a quasi-shifter sticking out the top of the transmission.
Jason's demonstration of translating the R5's entire powertrain from the front to the rear is great but, therefore, wrong! It's really a pity!😊 If we stick to the R5, we can say that the powertrain has returned to 180°. But if we consider the Renault 30, from which the gearbox is derived, he is ultimately not completely wrong.😉
Thank you Hagerty for giving this guy the space to do what he does! Glad to have him around and also noticed you’ve got some other great shows too. Motortrend who?
So awesome. Jason, you are a gem. Thank you for making us smile and laugh, while taking us down memory lane. This show, and anything else you do will be amazing.
Excellent video.... But they DID turn the engine around. The FWD R5, based heavily on the 4L, had the motor behind the gearbox.... In the standard hatchback, the engine mass was behind the front axle.... So to mount to he motor ahead of the rear axle, it had to be turned round. Have a look under the bonnet/hood of a FWD series 1 R5 of you don't believe me.... They did not go the Audi way, they followed their own trusty 4L. Nonetheless, another excellent video, wonderfully delivered by someone who loves the topic. Chapeau!

Perfect production quality, excellent narration, its just pure gold. Thanks for making me smile and my brain rev up late at night! Stuff like this makes my day, and broadens my hobbies! This was my poster car as a teen. We had one importer on the west coast, Sun, who managed to get about a dozen into the country at the time. They really are impressive to see in full race mode. We had a local, Jerry Fink, who brought one to an autocross in New Jersey. It had all the glass removed and was clearly beyond stage 1 (160hp) tune. Jerry was also an excellent driver, and it was giggle inducing to watch the R5 Turbo scoot. We had a garage box at the end with a chicane to ensure you didn't come in it too hot. Jerry managed to find a way to come in super fast, pivot the car, and jump the car into the box. It wish I'd had a smart phone back then to film it. The closest I came to driving this dream car was when we bought our Abarth 500 in 2013, which we still own. Obviously not the same thing at all, but a cheap practical car that I like to believe was in some ways inspired not just by the original 1000 Abarth, but also by Renault's bold move to pack lighting into a very cheap, very light hatch.
Sun international brought in a little over 100 cars into the US. Centennial Motors in Colorado brought in another 100. About 250 R5 turbos made it into the US in the '80s with the help of these importers. I used to drive from San Diego up to Sun to visit the shop and ogle over my ultimate dream car, the R5 Turbo. I finally made that dream come true in 2018 and now own an 83' R5 Turbo 2 in marine blue. Even by today's standards, it's incredibly engaging, interesting and oddly reliable. Parts are readily available and the car is easy to work on with great online support forums to assist. It's actually one of the more accessible, of the unicorn cars. (Lancia 037, Ford Sierra RS Cosworth, Lancia Delta S4, Audi Quattro Sport...etc..etc) And it can be had at reasonable money, relative to the other unicorn cars I just mentioned. Highly recommend living the dream!
My Dad was the mechanic for a Renault dealer in a small town in the middle of British Columbia Canada in the mid 70s. We drove Renaults for a while as did my Grandma. Our last one was a Renault 5 and my Grandma stuck with them til the Alliance. Good times!

I got to drive one of these when I worked at a Porsche dealership back in the 80's, but it was a real homologation car with 2 turbo's, cloth sunroof and a full roll cage. A truly once in a lifetime experience! Basically a Group-B car for the street. Same dealer also had a Audi Quattro Sport. I Drove that car as much as possible. The Audi was actually faster and handled better than the 911 of the same year.

Cool video, well produced and a great leftfield car choice (even here in the UK). The heat issue in 5 Turbo's is one of the reason they are so scarce today. Many caught fire and burnt (melted) away faster than a Gitanes on a windy day.

Have a look under the bonnet/hood of a FWD series 1 R5 of you don't believe me.... They did not go the Audi way, they followed their own trusty 4L. Nonetheless, another excellent video, wonderfully delivered by someone who loves the topic. Chapeau!
I am not even that much into cars, I dont even have a driving license, but dammit, this is hands down one of the best channels on youtube, all categories cosindered. Perfect production quality, excellent narration, its just pure gold. Thanks for making me smile and my brain rev up late at night! Stuff like this makes my day, and broadens my hobbies! I think I might dive a little into car related stuff soon.
Well done as always Jason! I look forward to the weekly shows!!
This guy is the best car journalist in the world, I am a big fan of him.
Please make an episode with the renault clio v6
Why has it been a year since a revelations episode? This is gold. Puhleeaase! More. Please…
Hell yes. Been looking forward to this after hearing about it on Carmudgeon Podcast. Can’t wait to see more!
Liked this video before I even watched it cause the "Cammisa Snark" has been severely missing from my life. Can't wait to see more!
I'm trying to bottle the Cammisa Snark, but it keeps breaking the glass containers... 😏
I’m so happy to see Cammisa on UA-cam again! Thanks Hagerty!
Don't like Renault, but I just love this guy. One of the few, if not the only car show I can watch. Bravo, Jason!
My Dad was the mechanic for a Renault dealer in a small town in the middle of British Columbia Canada in the mid 70s. We drove Renaults for a while as did my Grandma. Our last one was a Renault 5 and my Grandma stuck with them til the Alliance. Good times!
Michel Boué designed the first gen R5 and the widebody was designed by Jean-Yves Le gall, Marcello Gandini had nothing to do with this car he designed the next gen known as super5 please pin this so Michel and Jean-Yves get their credit
Hagerty's media blitz this year is lining up to be nuts.. keep it up peeps!
Finally Cammisa!
I never stopped drooling over this car....since the 80s.
11:33 Engine is knocking Loud and clear!!
This was a FANTASTIC production. Bring more on!
The production quality on this channel is insane! makes you appreciate the cars even more!
Cammisa is always awesome. Can't wait to watch every one of his Hagerty videos.
"It's so cute! Boop!" This is why I love watching Jason. Fearless enthusiasm for cars.
Great to see Jason Cammisa, but here he got the facts wrong. The Renault 5 had the engine behind the transmission.
One of those with a modern small turbo, alcohol injection, antilag, and a properly powerful standalone ecu would be a beast.
Thank you for bringing Jason back!!
Every person that got one talks about it. Fond memories. Speeding wasnt too much of a problem back then. "On pouvait rouler à l'époque !"
I really like these episodes. No giggling or oohs and ahhs just the straight narrative with a hot lap in the end.
Je ne m'attendez absolument pas à voir ça sur cette, une voiture légendaire en France, vraiment cool !!
I really love the way of you presenting old cars mate ❤️ one can feel the enthusiasm all over the clips 👌🏻
been waiting for this since Cammisa mentioned it on Carmudgeon, excellent stuff, can't wait for more
my first car was a 1.3l R5. I loved it, so lively the R5 Turbo was in another league. Poster stuff.
Renault 5,one of the best cars ever made.turbo was a beast,no traction control,no electronics, just the pleasure of diving
Glad that guy found a job again!
rude lol
He always had one, he's testing cars every week and is really active on the ISSIMI channel
@@l-danm1060 bruh thanks for putting me on, im watching all his segments now
Oh so thats why hes so pumped, just out of unemployemnt
I don't know who the guy is. I never saw this channel before today. But one thing I can say. This is my second video of this guy/channel but already subscribed!
Ahhhhh Cammisa content
Awesome video! That car was the inspiration for incredible cars like the Peugeot 205 T16 or the Lancia Delta S4.
Actually not, it was the Audi Quattro
And Renault went all bonkers again 20 years later with the stunning Clio V6! This was a great video dude!
Merci Monsieur !
(French guy in WA state with a 2005 XJR among other)
Thanks for the inspiration and keep on trucking!
missed this guy, love the show!
Cool video, well produced and a great leftfield car choice (even here in the UK). The heat issue in 5 Turbo's is one of the reason they are so scarce today. Many caught fire and burnt (melted) away faster than a Gitanes on a windy day.
Gitanes Galoise on a windy day... Hehehe
he’s back
This car was my computer background from about 2000-2005, even after I bought my Datsun Z in high school. I have and will always love this car!
French citizen here. That thing is absolutely beautiful (just take out the cheap plastic parts of the times). The lines are instantly recognizable and I can't wait for the new Electric R5 that should be on the roads in 2023/2024.
Finally it's here! Off to a great le start!
Le Oui!
Just came here from Jason's ig. Love this profession idiot❤️
I have always loved this car! Thanks for this great video.
Love the mental challenge of following along the twists and turns of engineering.
Jason thanx for thememories ...BUT remember when yountalsk about the 80s ....majority of us that are from that epoch & are now few & far between LOL...but i thank you from the bottom of my heart 4 the memories ...I tear up when you feature anything from the 70s to 90s ....ce la vie
Love this series. Fun and super informative!
YESSSSS!!! Great job!
I just hope that 35 years into the future, someone gives my GRYaris the same treatment that this unit got. Such an amazing and fun to watch video. I take this over boring people just reading a specs sheet anyday.
Yaris xD please, forgotten already
Never seen this channel before.
Top stuff.
I had a friend in the early 90s who bought a renault 5 turbo and I was genuinely shocked at how fast it went.
Luv and Peace.
My mom had a Renault 18i in the 1980s... love the R5 Turbo!!
From the rest of the English speaking world, please hear me as I say, THANK YOU for saying Al-u-min-ium properly 💙
You mean 'British A-lu-min-um'
Lol its spelled Aluminum get it right brit
Did you not listen to the way he said it lol, he is making fun of losers like you who care

Bah ha ha.
Says the country that contorted sol-der into 'sodder' and vehicle into ve-hic-le 🤣
I'm from Australia, but I'm pretty sure the English know how to pronounce 'English words' from their language. 👍
@@declanrex9435 dude it’s only spelled aluminum in America
"Shaka, When the walls fell"
Ferrarri, When the turbo spools...
TNG for Life
Great content Jason, as always. :)
And thank you for mentioning Budapest. :)
Really fun guy presenting a really fun car! The 1980 Renault LeCar was my first car. It died because the started went out and no one would touch it so I tried to change it myself; that didn’t go well. But, embarrassment in high school and all, I had a lot of fun with this car in two-tone beige!
We had one of these running around the silicon Valley. It was in the 80s and that dude drove the wheels of that thing. It sounded amazing.
