Bioware is putting it front-and-center, expecting everyone to ignore it and politely clap. The character creation looks worse than any Dragon Age game before it- which is saying a lot, considering Dragon Age: Origins came out in 2009. The dialogue is atrocious, which is a given in the 2020s, but I'm still marking it against the game. The combat looks worse than Dragon Age 2's combat, which was something that I suffered through JUST for the sake of the great story. But sure, we'll just dismiss it all as "negative gamers being sick-in-the-head".

There’s something shifty in all these videos too, where it’s like the games sliders don’t actually work. They’re there to give the appearance of options, but from 30%-80% there’s no visible change. So only maximum and minimum really affect anything at all. I saw the same thing with the body type triangle, where the muscle mass didn’t increase until the triangle was almost all the way at the top. Like almost everything else, it’s just pretending. - Pretend dialogue options (3 kinds of yes, is still a yes) Pretend diversity (fewer skin color and modification options than elden ring and they weren’t even trying, didn’t have to hype it) Pretend inclusivity (only surface level stuff, not integrated or thought out with the lore, won’t effect dialogue) Pretend character depth (all companions are pansexual, meaning no rejection writing, pure laziness. It also means that they have no preferences, and therefore there preferences don’t have any bearing on their personality or backstory) Pretend history (choices from past games are few, limited to 1 game, and some are trivial) Pretend species (qunari are just weird humans now, elves are just humans with pointy ears, all uniqueness has been drained out of them) Pretend blight (not even darkspawn, just generic undead) It’s a PRETEND dragon age: with nothing recognizable from before, visual style, costume design, cultural lore, combat, world history, class options, character control, real choices, dark spawn, non-magic dwarves. Just to add, Inquisition had moveable scars, you could move around the head with sliders. It had sliders for depth and severity. Inquisition had complexions for older looking characters. Inquisition had different tatoos for elves (vallaslin), humans and dwarves. Inquisition also had different, more sense making backstories for every race (even if now Bioware deemed word "race" as bad, so it's now "lineage") And to think back in the day we complained Inquisition had shit character creator... I take these words back, it was the most diverse we had ❤

@@SquaulDuNeant The character creator is very restrictive and most options are colour choices. It has a similar character creator to Diablo 4 but is just presented differently. BG3 is very open in it's gameplay and thats fantastic however it's character creator is not a selling point.
I was really surprised by HOW limited BG3 was in terms of customisation. Four body types? Fixed faces? No sliders. Even then, the characters look so much better and more diverse than DAV. And of course, being an incredibly good and popular game, modders swarmed in and filled in alot of the rough patches. Reckon DAV is going to have the same modding fanbase?

It's clear as crystal that this game was not 10 years in the making. What you have is an 18 month development brought about by a panicking company worried about layoffs. They spent 8 years just screwing around on LGBTQ propaganda and then rushed out some basic gameplay when EA started handing out firings.

And yet DA2 was slapped together in less than 18months and for all its faults still felt like a dragon age game and actually had a lot of positives to it, such as companions, story and the dialogue and Voice acting was still good. Veilguard on the other hand just looks like a steaming pile of shit in every way. So even if they came out and admitted they only whipped it up in 18months it wouldn’t even be an excuse at this point.

The character's expression at the end does it for me, it's that dead look that says "I don't want to be here anymore." At the very least they could have made the character seem happy to be in the game.

Keep in mind that Bioware has to have its own canon to create non-game media, they've already done that with their comics, which assume that Alistair becomes the new king of Ferelden.

When my English rose flavoured pasty ass is darker than the palest skin tone, there's something wrong lol. An old friend of mine is of Nordic and Irish descent and she makes me look tan by comparison. And she's not even the palest person I know. Which begs the question, why is everyone from Weisshaupt (The place that's supposed to mimic the very palest end of Europe) sporting black hair and coffee creme complexions?! Anders was a native from there... with pale skin like mine and pale blonde hair, which was the norm for that part of the world!

The more I see of this the more I believe the writers want the player to puppeteer an NPC in their story. You can slightly influence both, but in the end it seems that you play by their rules, in their world, exactly how they want you to.
Even for men, the options are just...meh. From what I've seen, long feminine as well as afro-like hairstyles make up the majority of hairstyles in the game. That's cool, of course, but sometimes I want to create a standard masculine-looking character and still have him look at least a little stylish. Apparently the sliders in the game won't have much effect on appearance customization and that's a BIG mistake, even in the Sims 4 you can sculpt a character's appearance pretty much to your tastes. Many people have already said that there are not enough asses and boobs for female characters - and it's true. But more to the point: for male characters too. I want to play as a pumped up man with huge tits and ass, am I asking too much? I want to actually BUILD the character's appearance, not to flit between 3 selected presets and fine-tune millimeters of unimportant details. And one more thing: why do characters by default have such short necks and big heads? Why do they have a figure that resembles a barrel or a box in any state? It's so weird.

What I would have done: 1) extend the max limit of sliders so you can make bigger everything. More muscles as well the max looking like Halsin (BG3) or even beefier 2) a lot more skin colors (fantasy ones like purples, blues, greens, pinks, glittery ones etc) 3) slider for depth and textures for scars (healed looking raised ones, burnt ones, stitched ones, fresh looking ones with a bit of flesh showing, veiny ones for magic/thunder damage etc) 4) option for mutilated injuries (missing tip of ear, chunk of nose, finger, any limb - with prostetic if needed) 5) different types of dimples (would be super cute especially when smiling) 6) wrinkle types and placement+depth slider (on the forehead, between the eyebrows, laugh lines, crows feet, neck wrinkles etc) 7) teeth options (sharper teeth, vampire fangs, crooked teeth, colors etc) 8) nail length, shape and color options THEN it would be actually the best in the industry🙆♀️

I honestly don't understand how they could mess this one up. It would've been the perfect tool to sway quite a few people who were (and still are) on the fence. People love creating characters! The CC in Inquisition was way better, if we disregard the hair. Admittedly, it took me ages until I had my perfect Inquisitor, but I got there eventually. Also, as good as the hair looks from a technical standpoint, it does not mesh with those airbrushed faces. It's very detailed, and so makes the faces look unfinished. The same goes for gear and environments. If you want to stylize something, shouldn't it, I dunno, match? This is why it looks so weird to so many. Because it doesn't match. How did nobody in production see this? It boggles the mind.
Yes, totally agree with you, like it gives incredible levels of canny valley (would've been uncanny if they actually looked more realistic, but alas). Sure, some stylized games do age better, given the entire game is stylized, not just aspects of it. TS4 being the best example, EVERYTHING looks cartoony in TS4, not just the sims themselves. But here? Yeah I do not understand what were they thinking, I am sure some devs thought that the disparity between cartoony characters and the more realistic environments was odd, but were too afraid to voice their concerns to the gendermancing overlords at the top? For fear of losing their jobs? I dunno. What I find incredibly sad is that DAI still has the superior character creator... game that was released 10 years ago. Sure, the hairstyles were crap, basically helmets, but the rest? Also, how have we moved backwards to Morrowind's lvls of body proportions? What gives? It's as if our gendermancing overlords at Bioware don't trust us, or don't want us to be able to create conventionally attractive characters...

I will tell you who is NEVER represented= me. I am an old short fat white guy, retired, that loves playing video games. I have yet to see a creator that even gets close. This one is bad, I haven't seen a single rook that was even close to interesting....they all look like cartoons. Maybe they just need to turn up the purple a few more notches, and you won't notice. I didn't want DA- the sims, which is what we got.

Game Riot Got flown out, he has a code for Dragon Age The Veilguard so he gets money when you buy the game with his code, he can upload early gameplay footage to make money from. But don’t worry guys, he is totally not biased. He is a fucking EA EMPLOYEE at this point. Saying he is sponsored is a huge understatement.
These devs are not Dragon Age fans, and certainly are not passionate gamers, who care about the product/universe.. This is just another job for them, in an industry focused on profit.. Games USED to be entertainment, made by passionate gamers and hpbbyists..
I might do the same. I miss Origins, tone and atmosphere of that game are top tier. I have few good memories of DA2 but I might jump into that right after for a bit of nostalgia. Only touched DAI for half an hour so I should probably give that one a spin too, and MAYBE I'll check Veilguard out later down the line

The butt and chest sliders suck.. i know women who want the options to make their characters have big butts or chests and cant cause of how limiting the options are.. they talk about inclusion and yet refuse to include options for plus sized women with big butts or chests. Its quite hypocritical and sad..🙄 I can see why they didnt give us more options for butt or chests sliders. Cause "male gaze" bad. Oh, I recognize your Dragon's Dogma 2 character. Which is more than I can say about Veilguard characters, I don't think I'd be able to pick them out of a line up.
Tfw Oblivion had more freedom in skin tone customization, to the point of choosing specific facial areas, like eye sockets, around the mouth, cheeks and so on. Age as well. Hell, even M&B Warband, while somewhat limited, had age slider, which not only affected wrinkles, but also gradually changed hair colour to partially grey or full-on white head. And both those games are quite old by modern standards. UPD.: and Exanima, an isometric game, has a better body shape customization as well.
I have actually come to believe the reason they did this is not because they are woke, but because they are lazy. Their claims of inclusivity are just meant to obfuscate the fact that this is a cost-cutting measure. If you look at all the characters, human, elf, qunari, dwarf, you will notice that their torsos are all basically the same rectangular shape. Which means armor and clothes that fit on one character will fit on any other character after being scaled up or down a little. In games where characters have differently proportioned and shaped bodies the devs will have to make a custom version of each piece of clothing for every single body type. This is a significant increase in workload for the modellers. Also, making clothes and armor that hug the curves of a character's body and looks good when animated is difficult. Bioware probably doesn't have the talent required to create a game with a plethora of different body types and a good selection of clothes and armor for each of those body types. All their real talent fled the company long ago and they've been scraping the bottom of the barrel when hiring, and this is the inevitable result of their mismanagement.

This character creator says: It is VERBOTEN to make a female character. But all woke mambo jambo is there. Bare bones character creator. I have seen more options in a korean mmo, that came out over a decade ago.
Well but the worst is that is looks dull, flat and ugly, the render seems really washed out, basic like an old game from 20 years ago. I remember when i was playing Inquisition with my Qunari woman, she looked so impressive, beautifull and menacing. And the render was really good for that time, this looks like some cheap mobile game with low resolution made for a tiny screen. They added a looot of magical stupid flashes, explosions, colorfull crap effects to cover their basic dull background.
It's similar to what happened in Andromeda. The character editor was also limited there (but, to be honest, it's still more diverse than in Veilguard). But then they realized the problem and improved the editor a bit. I'm sure they won't admit any problems with veilguard.
Yeah, I mean, they told you the "diversity" and "inclusion" is meant only for the devs. They straight up told you the game will follow their world view, hence anything outside that bubble is deemed not "inclusive and diverse". Hence, not shocking that DA and western games are so bigoted.
Trans women who get implants aren't even included. Surgery scars make less sense than other scars, because a hospital is the perfect place to get healing. I guess maybe if you "heal" top surgery, it might undo the surgery. That's logical tbh. Would probably make them cry if that was the idea

Gotta hand it to him, he's surprisingly balanced for a sponsored account. He's one of the few I bother watching for updates of this game. Him and WolfheartFPS are two of the ONLY accounts I've seen who tried to push the boundaries of REALISTIC bodies, and they simply couldn't do it. You can be dark but not black, fit but not buff, anorexically thin or slightly (VERY slightly) flabby, A tall dwarf and a short human/elf but not super short dwarf or super tall human. You can have a couple dozen scars, but they are all either cosmetic or gender affirmation surgery. There are no real disability options, the 'representation' for that is Neve missing a leg... Rook can't. You can have vitiligo or rosacea (ok, speaking as someone who HAS rosacea, NOBODY would EVER want to roll play that... nobody), but no debilitating scarring that's "unsightly", no missing limbs/ears/eyes/etc. They can remove serious scarring from the world state EXCEPT if it's gender related. THE ONE KIND OF SCAR THAT'S SUPPOSED TO BE CANONICALLY AVOIDABLE BECAUSE THEY USE BLOOD MAGIC TO PERFORM IT!!! The scars from injury look like face paint! One of my FAVOURITE things to do in the old games, and in BG3 was to have a deep scar across my nose and lip! Almost every character I make in any game has that scar. I can't do it here! The head/body ratio was supposed to STOP the clipping, but it's STILL THERE!! the CC is so bad, they literally put freckles, face complexions and face marks literally into the complexion tab, what if I want to look older but with freckles? JUST CAN'T, also how they got everything from BG3 but without the campiness, the vitiligo is meh(literally invisible in yellow skintones), the penis? no, in the pg13 game is bulge size IJBOL, not talking about the lack of skintones too, literally two rows of skintones, you can't be THAT white, and can't be THAT black either, is always in midtones(the sims 4 is a inspiration and have triple the skintones after the patch), not talking the lack of fantasy skintones in all races, or different face shapes, till today I didn't see ONE character that have a round face.
A curvy and attractive woman and a really jacked dude are the two most popular character archetypes for people to make and neither are available. Breast size goes from double mastectomy to man on HRT....... This is one of the most exclusive character creators I've ever seen.

The dialogue is atrocious, which is a given in the 2020s, but I'm still marking it against the game.
The combat looks worse than Dragon Age 2's combat, which was something that I suffered through JUST for the sake of the great story.

There’s something shifty in all these videos too, where it’s like the games sliders don’t actually work.
They’re there to give the appearance of options, but from 30%-80% there’s no visible change.
So only maximum and minimum really affect anything at all.
I saw the same thing with the body type triangle, where the muscle mass didn’t increase until the triangle was almost all the way at the top.
Like almost everything else, it’s just pretending.

Just to add, Inquisition had moveable scars, you could move around the head with sliders. It had sliders for depth and severity.
Inquisition had complexions for older looking characters. Inquisition had different tatoos for elves (vallaslin), humans and dwarves.
Inquisition also had different, more sense making backstories for every race (even if now Bioware deemed word "race" as bad, so it's now "lineage")
And to think back in the day we complained Inquisition had shit character creator... I take these words back, it was the most diverse we had ❤

BG3 is very open in it's gameplay and thats fantastic however it's character creator is not a selling point.
I was really surprised by HOW limited BG3 was in terms of customisation. Four body types? Fixed faces? No sliders. Even then, the characters look so much better and more diverse than DAV.
And of course, being an incredibly good and popular game, modders swarmed in and filled in alot of the rough patches. Reckon DAV is going to have the same modding fanbase?

It's clear as crystal that this game was not 10 years in the making. What you have is an 18 month development brought about by a panicking company worried about layoffs.
They spent 8 years just screwing around on LGBTQ propaganda and then rushed out some basic gameplay when EA started handing out firings.

And yet DA2 was slapped together in less than 18months and for all its faults still felt like a dragon age game and actually had a lot of positives to it, such as companions, story and the dialogue and Voice acting was still good.
Veilguard on the other hand just looks like a steaming pile of shit in every way. So even if they came out and admitted they only whipped it up in 18months it wouldn’t even be an excuse at this point.

When my English rose flavoured pasty ass is darker than the palest skin tone, there's something wrong lol. An old friend of mine is of Nordic and Irish descent and she makes me look tan by comparison. And she's not even the palest person I know.
Which begs the question, why is everyone from Weisshaupt (The place that's supposed to mimic the very palest end of Europe) sporting black hair and coffee creme complexions?! Anders was a native from there... with pale skin like mine and pale blonde hair, which was the norm for that part of the world!

The more I see of this the more I believe the writers want the player to puppeteer an NPC in their story. You can slightly influence both, but in the end it seems that you play by their rules, in their world, exactly how they want you to.

Sims 4's Character Creator is WAAAAAY better. And you can make characters actually hot.
Even for men, the options are just...meh. From what I've seen, long feminine as well as afro-like hairstyles make up the majority of hairstyles in the game. That's cool, of course, but sometimes I want to create a standard masculine-looking character and still have him look at least a little stylish. Apparently the sliders in the game won't have much effect on appearance customization and that's a BIG mistake, even in the Sims 4 you can sculpt a character's appearance pretty much to your tastes. Many people have already said that there are not enough asses and boobs for female characters - and it's true. But more to the point: for male characters too. I want to play as a pumped up man with huge tits and ass, am I asking too much? I want to actually BUILD the character's appearance, not to flit between 3 selected presets and fine-tune millimeters of unimportant details.
And one more thing: why do characters by default have such short necks and big heads? Why do they have a figure that resembles a barrel or a box in any state? It's so weird.

the men look like twinks that got into gym about 6 months ago and I hate this, what about real big men?? Not talking how the "fat" bodypreset is the worse i've seen the last 10 years.
What I would have done:
1) extend the max limit of sliders so you can make bigger everything. More muscles as well the max looking like Halsin (BG3) or even beefier
2) a lot more skin colors (fantasy ones like purples, blues, greens, pinks, glittery ones etc)
3) slider for depth and textures for scars (healed looking raised ones, burnt ones, stitched ones, fresh looking ones with a bit of flesh showing, veiny ones for magic/thunder damage etc)
4) option for mutilated injuries (missing tip of ear, chunk of nose, finger, any limb - with prostetic if needed)
5) different types of dimples (would be super cute especially when smiling)
6) wrinkle types and placement+depth slider (on the forehead, between the eyebrows, laugh lines, crows feet, neck wrinkles etc)
7) teeth options (sharper teeth, vampire fangs, crooked teeth, colors etc)
8) nail length, shape and color options
THEN it would be actually the best in the industry🙆♀️

They thought, I gave them long hair that moves, they won't notice every other thing in the character creator is pure garbage. Everyone will be staring at the hair! We don't need feminine features or breasts! They'll never notice our true plot!
Worst part is it worked. Every defender of this game brings up the hair physics as one of their main points
I honestly don't understand how they could mess this one up. It would've been the perfect tool to sway quite a few people who were (and still are) on the fence. People love creating characters! The CC in Inquisition was way better, if we disregard the hair. Admittedly, it took me ages until I had my perfect Inquisitor, but I got there eventually.
Also, as good as the hair looks from a technical standpoint, it does not mesh with those airbrushed faces. It's very detailed, and so makes the faces look unfinished. The same goes for gear and environments. If you want to stylize something, shouldn't it, I dunno, match? This is why it looks so weird to so many. Because it doesn't match. How did nobody in production see this? It boggles the mind.
Yes, totally agree with you, like it gives incredible levels of canny valley (would've been uncanny if they actually looked more realistic, but alas). Sure, some stylized games do age better, given the entire game is stylized, not just aspects of it. TS4 being the best example, EVERYTHING looks cartoony in TS4, not just the sims themselves.
But here? Yeah I do not understand what were they thinking, I am sure some devs thought that the disparity between cartoony characters and the more realistic environments was odd, but were too afraid to voice their concerns to the gendermancing overlords at the top? For fear of losing their jobs? I dunno.
What I find incredibly sad is that DAI still has the superior character creator... game that was released 10 years ago. Sure, the hairstyles were crap, basically helmets, but the rest? Also, how have we moved backwards to Morrowind's lvls of body proportions? What gives? It's as if our gendermancing overlords at Bioware don't trust us, or don't want us to be able to create conventionally attractive characters...

This one is bad, I haven't seen a single rook that was even close to interesting....they all look like cartoons. Maybe they just need to turn up the purple a few more notches, and you won't notice. I didn't want DA- the sims, which is what we got.

The butt and chest sliders suck.. i know women who want the options to make their characters have big butts or chests and cant cause of how limiting the options are.. they talk about inclusion and yet refuse to include options for plus sized women with big butts or chests. I can see why they didnt give us more options for butt or chests sliders. Cause "male gaze" bad. They (activist devs) dont want toxic white men to take advantage of it and make super hot and attractive women. Though im not sure this is the reason. That being said, there are a lot of lunatics on forums saying that Zevran was “too flirty”, and the city elf origin story was bad because of its violent content. (I don’t encourage violence against anyone, especially women, but DA:O was a dark fantasy, and that was pretty freaking dark!) These people are insane!

Oh, I recognize your Dragon's Dogma 2 character. Which is more than I can say about Veilguard characters, I don't think I'd be able to pick them out of a line up.
Tfw Oblivion had more freedom in skin tone customization, to the point of choosing specific facial areas, like eye sockets, around the mouth, cheeks and so on. Age as well. Hell, even M&B Warband, while somewhat limited, had age slider, which not only affected wrinkles, but also gradually changed hair colour to partially grey or full-on white head. And both those games are quite old by modern standards.
UPD.: and Exanima, an isometric game, has a better body shape customization as well.
I have actually come to believe the reason they did this is not because they are woke, but because they are lazy. Their claims of inclusivity are just meant to obfuscate the fact that this is a cost-cutting measure.
If you look at all the characters, human, elf, qunari, dwarf, you will notice that their torsos are all basically the same rectangular shape. Which means armor and clothes that fit on one character will fit on any other character after being scaled up or down a little.
In games where characters have differently proportioned and shaped bodies the devs will have to make a custom version of each piece of clothing for every single body type. This is a significant increase in workload for the modellers. Also, making clothes and armor that hug the curves of a character's body and looks good when animated is difficult.
Bioware probably doesn't have the talent required to create a game with a plethora of different body types and a good selection of clothes and armor for each of those body types.
All their real talent fled the company long ago and they've been scraping the bottom of the barrel when hiring, and this is the inevitable result of their mismanagement.

Well but the worst is that is looks dull, flat and ugly, the render seems really washed out, basic like an old game from 20 years ago. I remember when i was playing Inquisition with my Qunari woman, she looked so impressive, beautifull and menacing. And the render was really good for that time, this looks like some cheap mobile game with low resolution made for a tiny screen.
They added a looot of magical stupid flashes, explosions, colorfull crap effects to cover their basic dull background.

It's similar to what happened in Andromeda. The character editor was also limited there (but, to be honest, it's still more diverse than in Veilguard). But then they realized the problem and improved the editor a bit. I'm sure they won't admit any problems with veilguard.
Yeah, I mean, they told you the "diversity" and "inclusion" is meant only for the devs. They straight up told you the game will follow their world view, hence anything outside that bubble is deemed not "inclusive and diverse". Hence, not shocking that DA and western games are so bigoted.

Gotta hand it to him, he's surprisingly balanced for a sponsored account. He's one of the few I bother watching for updates of this game. Him and WolfheartFPS are two of the ONLY accounts I've seen who tried to push the boundaries of REALISTIC bodies, and they simply couldn't do it. You can be dark but not black, fit but not buff, anorexically thin or slightly (VERY slightly) flabby, A tall dwarf and a short human/elf but not super short dwarf or super tall human. You can have a couple dozen scars, but they are all either cosmetic or gender affirmation surgery. There are no real disability options, the 'representation' for that is Neve missing a leg... Rook can't.
You can have vitiligo or rosacea (ok, speaking as someone who HAS rosacea, NOBODY would EVER want to roll play that... nobody), but no debilitating scarring that's "unsightly", no missing limbs/ears/eyes/etc. They can remove serious scarring from the world state EXCEPT if it's gender related. THE ONE KIND OF SCAR THAT'S SUPPOSED TO BE CANONICALLY AVOIDABLE BECAUSE THEY USE BLOOD MAGIC TO PERFORM IT!!! The scars from injury look like face paint! One of my FAVOURITE things to do in the old games, and in BG3 was to have a deep scar across my nose and lip! Almost every character I make in any game has that scar. I can't do it here!
The head/body ratio was supposed to STOP the clipping, but it's STILL THERE!!
So yeah, diversity and representation as long as you are average height, weight, build, face shape, skin tone, hair.... well you can have super curly I guess? But if you're not average to small in every way, but not TOO SMALL, and if you're not conventionally attractive (even with freakishly large jaw etc.), young and able bodied... you're shit out of luck.

the CC is so bad, they literally put freckles, face complexions and face marks literally into the complexion tab, what if I want to look older but with freckles? JUST CAN'T, also how they got everything from BG3 but without the campiness, the vitiligo is meh(literally invisible in yellow skintones), the penis? no, in the pg13 game is bulge size IJBOL, not talking about the lack of skintones too, literally two rows of skintones, you can't be THAT white, and can't be THAT black either, is always in midtones(the sims 4 is a inspiration and have triple the skintones after the patch), not talking the lack of fantasy skintones in all races, or different face shapes, till today I didn't see ONE character that have a round face.
