For live service, what happened is simple: Anthem bombed on launch, and after 2 years, they gave up on it. And when they did that, they also decided to change DA:V from live service to single player. So the game had at least 2 years of a big dev team fully going down the live service path, before that course correction. You can see a lot of aspects of the game's design that seem to point back to that.
I agree. I'm playing a rogue. But there's a special move with both thumbs thumbsticks where she sprays fire balls. I'm not playing a mage so what gives 😂
the moment i saw them rebrand to neon purple i knew this game was going to be very far removed from dragon age, it gave me watch dogs, harry potter vibes
It pops but gives a very juvenile look. In medieval settings purple was only worn by royalty, which to me seems rare. Now they just splashing it over everything for this game.
Reminded me of Saints Row also. But Saints Row had always been purple, though. The last one was more pink-ish, I think. Is there a colour conspiracy going on???
Hey, just wanted to say that I loved the video and I agree with everything you said, I was surprised to see that you're a small channel. As a long time fan just like you I despise what they've done with the saga, and the worst part is, they're gonna do this to Mass Effect too, and Mass Effect was already completely buried into the ground with Andromeda, but I know they can make it sink even lower. At this point I'm just waiting for Bioware to keep destroying themselves like this until there gone and I'll just laugh. Anyways, really cool video, you got yourself a new subscriber, I hope you make more videos like this in the future, loved hearing your opinion and you also have a really cute voice ^^
Well said Amy, can tell what you said was purely from the heart and I hope you get to find a new game to love as much as you did the Dragon Age franchise.
To be honest... I'm Sticking to Dragon Age The Veilguard. I'm gonna push another Playthrough soon (maybe) and see if perhaps if I do things differently, maybe I'll like it better... Maybe there's more to the game I missed. So far, I'm still left with a bitter taste.

I feel largely the same way. Why is it so hard to make well written, good RPGs these days? Baldur's Gate 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 are increasingly feeling like the exception rather than the rule.

As a fan of the original DA since DAO I feel the same way, Amy. Totally understand what you feel and your disappointment. The thing that pulled me the most to DA is the dark tone and strategic combat. I remember it took me several tries before being able to defeat a dragon (which I forgot the name), and Flemeth. This was born from my love of the Infinity Engine of Black Isle (of Baldur's Gate fame). Veilguard is a game that I don't recognize anymore, and I heard from another youtuber that the writers actually destroyed Ferelden. Making all our choices, character, stories from DAO irrelevant.
This is a very good review. I agree that if it didn't have the bioware name it probably would have been better received. Heck it didnt even need to be a dragon age game. It would have been a very serviceable action rpg.
To be brutally honest I think that without the Bioware name and the Dragon Age tag this game would be regarded as a very poor God of War type clone? Just look at the numbers on Steam who aren’t even finishing the game as it is but quitting in the first 3-4 parts or chapters? That shows that even with hardcore fans of both game studio and the Dragon Age franchise itself, there are still too many hardcore fans who are giving up on it! THAT is the biggest problem of all when you cannot hold even your most ardent fans for the full game!😅
Agreed! The Varric Solas plot twist wasn’t clever and it required way too many plot contrivances and situational scenarios to avoid that little trick of Solas not getting noticed by the others? Most of all it was an insult to the character of Varric and robbed us of the chance to grieve him in game while also proving those leaked rumors about Varric to be true…what a downer!😔
If this was not a DA game, okay new IP might be fine. But the fact that this is sold as a DA game ... please no. No! This is not a DA game. Under any other brand or name it would have been a AA Action RPG. Under Dragon Age we EXPECT things like good writing, Lore, well written characters, and a DARK fantasy.
Ugh... Qunari are ugly. I mean, they always were ugly but... like Turians it was because their were too alien from human perspective. And that was great. I loved their design. I loved how sturdy the dwarves were, how small and petite the elves were. Now they all seem human but somehow uglyer. But Qunari here are really the worst.
It's a shame, i was so looking forward to a new dragon age. Thank you for the review, most others talk about how its not selling and about taash. It's was nice to hear a review that felt less like an attack on the game, just an honest opinion from a fan of the series.
Perhaps my position could be considered suspicious or "influenced" because I haven't even played the game, but I did some research including spoilers, read different (serious) reviews and talked to people who played the game. I don't believe the game is terrible or a failure, just as I believe it can please and enchant different niches of players. However, given my personal preferences and expectations, which I consider realistic given the history and tradition of DA, I can say that the game doesn't have the same appeal and enthusiasm that I had for the conclusion of this cycle. I won't go into details because that would require a long text. Even if an opinion is not objectively positive, it may have the merit of being representative when finding voices with lucid and similar arguments. I understand that preferences and expectations are subjective and I don't want to be unfair to the game, but this adapted formula is not compatible with my vision regarding the format and development of the tittle in different departments. Let's just say that I'm in no rush to play it now and I hope that Bioware can achieve a financially satisfactory result involving this product. As for players who are enjoying the experience, no problem; I'll maintain a more nostalgic stance.
They (Bioware) are getting the audience they went after…unfortunately that isn’t us older fans of Dragon Age or the fans of role playing games in general.
What do you mean by "Serious reviews"!? Am I a joke to you??? Lol. just kidding. I get your point. My opinion is tainted because of the previous games, I guess. But, you haven't played the game, right?
@amytheseeker Peace! No problem. Yep, I haven't played it yet, but I'm comfortable with what I've learned from the information I've gathered. I understand better what was missing or had little "care" to capture my attention and interest - even based on personal research and investigation. It also happened that some choices didn't please me or disappointed me. It's sad, but I'm happy for those who think differently and enjoyed a good experience with the game.
The moment a game abandons its uniqueness just to appeal to a broader audience and prioritizes awareness over good writing is the moment the game loses its identity and makes the fans angry, turning the game into something that most people will sort of like from something some people wouldve truly loved. Bioware always knew their audience and played into their strengths and it was simply magic. Hopefully Bioware will come to realize this and get their act together for ME5, even after three disappointments in a row I am still hopeful and hope to experience the bioware magic again.
I don't expect much better from Mass Effect 5. Mostly because the old writers are LONG GONE. And if this is the best the NEW WRITERS can do. Well then ME 5 is already dead.

Really enjoyed your video, I hope you make more. But I would disagree that you can't judge art as objectively good or bad, particularly video games. after all, if the game simply doesn't run, then that would make it objectively bad. I think other design elements can be considered objectively bad, like puzzle design, enemy AI, etc. All that being said, it think it's totally possible to still enjoy an objectively bad game, and I don't think anyone should feel shamed for liking a bad game. You're free to like whatever you want, don't let anyone yuk your yum.
Interesting take on the "objectively bad" part. I never thought of it that way. I always saw art as something entirely subjective, so... I just don't feel comfortable saying something is good or bad (relating to art, that is). But mechanics and some design (since it relates to function) I believe can be judged as good or bad depending on if they work or not. Am I making sense?
@amytheseeker yeah, I would agree. Video games are a weird hybrid for art. As far as the look and design of the game, it's purely subjective. The same goes for the content of the writing. Whether you like the story or the characters seems subjective to me as well. But even then, if the art in the game is rendered poorly, missing textures or broken meshes, you could call that objectively bad. Though I wouldn't say Veilguard suffers from that, it seems to look and run just fine. Likewise, with the writing, the content may be subjective, but the structure can be measured objectively. Think back to how you may have been graded in any creative writing class, things like plot holes or contrivances, character motivations, and expository dialog. All of those things in a written story can be judged on objective merits. When put in a game, especially and rpg with player choice, the way those choices are written and presented can be judged objectively, whether your choice was clearly presented to you before you made it.
"It does not mean it is objectively good or bad, there is no such thing when the subject at hand is art." That statement is objectively false. Videogames, much like movies, books, etc. Are products, we can tell if they're good or bad. Just because someone likes something that sucks, doesn't mean it is good. Like a book or movie, the writing matters a lot. Dragon Age Veilguard, objectively, is written poorly. "Bioware has always been aces at storytelling." End of ME3. Andromeda. Most of the good writers are just gone. I never understand why people think this is good combat. It is the same thing from about hour 10 to maximum level. The combat doesn't change really at all, you do the same thing, for dozens of hours, the enemies are basically always the same the entire way through, you have barely any abilities and you have to spam regular attacks to use them. We're 9 years post Witcher 3, which is significantly better combat The storytelling IS bad. Pacing, stakes, emotional investment, its all either incredibly shallow or dealt with so fast you get no time to feel anything. Also has a tendency to be undercut with very...'marvel' level humour. On its own as a game, it would be mid, maybe slightly below, as a dragon age game its awful.
I loved Veilguard. It's more of a cinematic action game, with a handful of significant choices. Not so much a traditional RPG. However, I have had a fantastic time with this game. Its beautiful, bug-free, the combat is excellent and the overarching story was incredible. Especially how this story tied the history and lore to the origines of elves, dwarves, blight, more.
