  • Hi Everyone: Here is the follow up video showing the problems on this vehicle. As you can see there are alot of factors involved in repairing these types of problems. After I install the crankshaft sensor I will drive it around for a few days to make sure that everything is functioning properly. During the test driving period it shut off again, this time there was a voltage change in the throttle position sensor when it wasn't supposed to change. Testing with the Snap-on Vantage never showed a problem and thru this entire experience the check engine light never came on. Now this engine is running at an Optimal level! I gotta say this is one of, or is, the best "how-to" automotive repair videos I've seen. You went step by step and what also helps us viewers is that you had someone else recording. Great job. Now about the truck. My wife has a 2003 Dakota, 4 dr (aka Quadcab), v8 4.7. The last few years it has started giving us issues which led me into learning ALOT about these trucks. About the fuel pump, I dropped the tank and replaced the pump yet to get the same problem. She still had to cycle the key 3 times because it wouldn't hold pressure. That's actually the Regulator that's attached to the pump. Which there's a workaround; simply buy a fuel safe check valve which will keep fuel from going backwards. Another thing for your issue with stalling while turning or steering; replace the power steering pressure sensor. They tend to short or go bad by fluids dripping onto the wiring which runs down the wire and into the sensor. It's about $20 from Rockauto. Now I am gonna try cleaning the throttle body and whatnot. BUT, we had an issue with the truck having issues idling, stalling, hesitation, etc so after researching I replaced the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor), which is mounted on the throttle body, and it completely stopped all those problems. The TPS is about $30 from Rockauto. Another thing, unrelated, these trucks sometimes will build up corrosion on the battery terminals even if you just cleaned them off. Most people buy a new battery yet get the same problem. It's not the battery, it's the Battery Temperature Sensor (about $15 at Rockauto) which is mounted in the battery box that you'll see when you remove the battery. I hope this helps someone. Again great job John

    John thank you very much for taking the time to show how difficult these problems can be. Anyone who needs a good mechanic in your area would do well to bring their vehicle to you. I have a '94 Dakota SLT 5.2 2wd that we have owned since new with an intermittent stalling issue that has taken quite a while to correct. Mostly because of a lie that a dealer mechanic told me many years ago when the OEM fuel level sender quit working. Your video has dispelled all the misinformation and shed light on several of the issues we have found on our '94. She's running great now with 160,000 miles and many more to go!

    Thanks John, after watching your video, I suggested to my friend to change out the ignition key module cylinder that might be causing his 98 Dakota to stall while driving. (key came out in on position)
    He spent money on new fuel pump, new oxygen sensors, new crank position sensor, new ignition coils, new ignition pick up coil, new spark plugs. He finally changed out ignition key lock cylinder and now the truck runs great with no more stalling. Thanks again for posting this info, too bad we didn't see your video before doing all this work

    The most comprehensive Dakota/Durango "engine dies when stopping or turning" video on UA-cam! I don't know how I came across this (it certainly wasn't via keywords or the title) but, I'm sure glad I did! Thanks for the help! Even if this video is 8 years old, it's still ABSOLUTELY relevant. 👍

    John, I have a 99 Dakota and I love it. I work on it myself but I'm not a mechanic, im a carpenter, but I am very mechanically inclined. I want to learn more about these trucks, especially maximize my fuel economy as i have a 5.3 and a 5 speed with 4 wheel drive. Can you please make more. I really appreciate the time you took to make this video. Very informative and helpful.

    Wow, old video but well made. I go through the same thing with customers. They expect immediate answers to problem that they've ignored for years, not realizing that you have to go through one symptom at a time. And not accepting responsibility that some of it is from their own neglect. Or, when they take it to other shop first, and they chase a problem in another direction and miss something or change a part that makes it worse or screws up something else. Like a kid that just finished tech school believing they know it all only to find out they didn't learn anything without the hands on experience. 40+ years I've been doing this trade and still learning. Thanks for the vid.

    I can tell you one thing, and you probably already know, there are always people who are unrealistic as far as repairs go! It’s very hard to find a good honest repair shop/ owner but when you do, you’d be smart to treat them like family because they are the life line to your trouble free transportation! Mistakes might happen, a lot of the time there are multiple issues surrounding a problem. Be realistic, this video is a real good example of what scan tools can’t do!

    Sounds like my truck they said they couldn't duplicate what I told them. That it randomly died. My key comes out like that too lol. You have given me new appreciation for mechanics they have a daunting task trying to please everyone when prices are so high and customer patience is so short. Thanks Dale

    • @JohnSadlersAutoRepair
      @JohnSadlersAutoRepair  4 роки тому

      Hi Dale, another thing to do is invest in a scan tool that shows the voltages and percentages. Get some one to drive for you and from the passenger seat watch the TPS, LTFT, ALTERNATOR VOLTAGE, CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR IDLE AIR CONTROL, look for any voltage dropouts , example if the tps is 1 volt at idle and 4.5 volts at full throttle and your cruising at 60 mph. You should see 2.5 to 3.5 volts steady. If you see it drop to .5 volts and back up again that sensor is failing.

    I feel your pain.
    I seem to get cars like this in after a dealership quits on them. I actually have an '03 5.9L Dakota in with similar issues.
    NOT ALL PROBLEMS SHOW THEMSELVES WITH A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT!
    Getting Joe Public to understanding that is nearly impossible. There are so many areas that just don't show themselves unless you use a scope and VOM. EVEN THEN THEY CAN BE GHOSTS...COMING AND GOING. Fuel issues is becoming more common like yours. Especially after a vehicle has been stored for any real length of time. Mine was in storage for 15 months and mice and other rodents had total access...I'm sure you understand my pain with this unit. I've used nearly my full arsenal of diagnostic and testing tools and still have some stalling issues. I came to your video and found you've done almost the same, just a variation of the order. My next test will be the crank sensor...Thanks for that heads up. I hadn't gotten there yet and maybe wouldn't have without seeing this video. I'm never claim to be a GURU or best but not the worst either, and always willing to learn new things.
    Like you I've donated parts.......reasons probably the same.
    You certainly had your hands full with this one. Like you, first thing I will do with aftermarket alarms if a vehicle is having strange issues with no codes is jerk it out...often that alone fixes a lot of issues with no further action. Another thing Jane Public can't understand. "It always worked fine before" Ever heard that one?
    Anyway, I just wanted to compliment you on your diagnosis and how you explained your thought process and how you arrived at your fixes.
    Keep your sanity and know others are having the same headaches.
    Great Video.

    John....great video. I do as much of my own mechanic work on my vehicles as I can. People that don't know beans about fixing a car just don't understand what goes into repairing them. Most of them think all you have to do is replace a part and it's done. If they could work in a shop with a mechanic that knows what he is doing they would understand more about what goes on in fixing a car or truck. I like your attention to detail and doing things right. You could work on my vehicle any time. Thanks for our dedication.

    I have a 05 Dakota 3.7L 4x4. I used to have the problem where the truck would shut off while driving which was very dangerous. I never had an issue where the key would fall out. After I took it back to the Dodge dealership that I bought it from, I spoke to a locksmith that said that sometimes the weight of a keychain full of keys can sometimes put too much weight on the key ignition chamber and that technically you should only have the vehicle key on that key chain for that reason. So I started doing that and never had the problem again. ( fingers crossed) I have put about 30K on since then.

    John, I wish your shop was in my town. I feel most mechanics won't spend this much time trying to figure out the problem or just don't know as much as you do about the electronics on a vehicle. Most of them might put in a part, but won't exactly fix the problem. Your a professional at your craft.. My 2003 Dakota does the same thing. It starts fine the first time of the day, but will cut off sometimes while I'm driving down the road. Then when I try to crank it back up the engine sounds like it's flooded and just whines. Finally it will start back up. My check engine light is on, so I'm hoping this will give them the information they need to pinpoint the problem (s).

    2002 Durango 5.9. I'm having a start problem. Crank for 3 seconds and nothing. Turn off and crank again and it fires right up. I attached a regulator and when just turning on the key you can hear the pump but it only gets to about 5 PSI. When it fires it holds steady at 51 and runs and idles perfect. When you shut off the engine the pressure drops to 0 within about 20 seconds. Im thinking the fuel pump/fuel pressure regulator is bad. Is there anything else that might be the culprit before I go through the process of replacing the fuel pump only to find out that wasn't it?

    Unfortunately I don't have anything quite that elaborate to troubleshoot with. I only have a couple of nice Fluke DMM's, a fairly basic code reader, and a test light. I really hate throwing parts at a problem, but without the proper means of testing a component, sometimes you don't have much choice.

      Any codes? If you can drive around with a scan tool on and watch the tps and cps to make sure no dropouts in voltage or signal when your driving. When sensors fail sometimes they will show fluctuation when your just cruising at one speed, then you know that sensor is bad for sure.

    • @JohnSadlersAutoRepair
      @JohnSadlersAutoRepair  3 роки тому

      Hi Edward, when it stops running you need to find out if it's fuel or spark.
      You can rent a fuel pressure gauge to hook up on the fuel injection rail, most auto parts stores rent them now. So when it stops running and you open the hood and the fuel pressure gauge shows pressure it's probably a spark problem and you can remove one spark plug wire and put an extra spark plug in the end of the wire, crank over the engine and see if there is spark. After you know that let me know and I'll tell you the next step.

      You need to find out if there is no spark after it dies by removing a plug wire at the spark plug ,put a small screw driver into the spark plug boot and hold the metal part of the screw driver about a 1/4 inch from the valve cover or a metal bracket and have someone crank the engine over. Let me know the result and go from there.

    Just out of curiosity, what did you do to fix the fuel pressure loss after the key is turned off. That pressure should stay the same, correct? I have a 99 dodge dakota v8 and it'll start up just fine in the morning but as soon as I put it in reverse, drive, or just give it any gas at all it'll immediately die and I have to wait quite some time before it'll start back up again. Sometimes the only time it'll start up is when I'm turning the key and giving it gas for what I feel like longer than what you should and I'm afraid it'll damage my starter as well. Once it gets past this issue in the morning it doesn't do it anymore throughout the day. Any idea what the issue could be? My dad changed the fuel pump about 10 months ago so I wouldn't guess that that's the problem.

    • @JohnSadlersAutoRepair
      @JohnSadlersAutoRepair  8 років тому

      +Jarred Palmier When the engine stalls you need to pull the coil wire out of the distributor cap and hold it 1/4 inch away from a ground and have someone crank the engine over and see if your getting any spark. You also want to have a fuel pressure gauge hooked up to the test port on the fuel rail so you can see what it is when the problem happens.

      +countvex These are very tough problems, you can hook up a scan tool and have someone drive and someone watch the tps, iac, crank sensor and see if the voltages jump around. Plus get me the LTFT at idle and 2,500 rpm.

    • @jeffjohnson4664

      +countvex My '00 Durango 4.7 does this too. It will idle at 725 rpms...then slowly drop to 600...then bounce between 500-600. It only does this when I have the bi-level or dash-vents turned on or set to the "OFF" Position. Any other setting turns on the electric fan which bumps the idle up to 800 rpms...and it will stay there. When in Stop-N-Go traffic the truck will stall when slowing down and the idle drops too low. However, put it in Neutral and she'll start right back up. I have replaced the TPS, IAC and Fuel Pump a few thousand miles ago Did a complete throttle-body remove/clean/replace. Spark plugs replaced. I get no codes on the display when cycling the ignition 3 times. The Alternator voltage shows 14V at Idle and a snit more when driving so I believe that is good (original part). I am leaning towards a small vacuum leak somewhere. All original hoses at 15 years and 170,000 miles. Any advice?

    • @JohnSadlersAutoRepair
      @JohnSadlersAutoRepair  8 років тому

      I would put a vacuum gauge on it and see where it is. 19 to 20 in. is normal at an idle. If it's jumping around some you have a vacuum hose collapsing when it warms up. The best way to know is if you can get me the LTFT at idle and at 2,500 rpm. Any generic scan tool should be able to do this.

    • @JohnSadlersAutoRepair
      @JohnSadlersAutoRepair  7 років тому

      The fuses can look good and still be bad, change the number 5 and 14 fuses. also I would wiggle the wiring harness starting at the battery with the engine idling and see if the lights go off and if it wants to stall. I would take both battery cables off and clean the terminals even if they look good. next put a volt meter one lead on the negative side of the battery and the other end on the engine block, should have less than i volt. next go from the positive battery cable to the positive side of the alternator, should also be less than 1 volt. That's a voltage drop test, there is also an auto shut down relay and not sure if that will affect the lights.
