Great convo! Started my natural hair journey decades ago. One of the early products that came on the scene was Mixed Chicks (MC). Saw them on one of the morning shows making the claim that the product worked on all hair types “and you can get results like ours.” Spent lots of $ trying to get those results. MC did have a great detangler that was awesome (who knew that you didn’t have to fight 🥊with your hair to detangle it?)! 😂 Needless to say, my tightly coiled hair didn’t’ respond as they promised. I think early “natural” hair care products weren’t actually developed for all hair types, but no one told us so. The promise was always that your hair, no matter the type, could look just like theirs, mixed race or not. We didn’t have social media back in the olden days to show us techniques, to explain how products are designed to work. What we did have were books and handouts that told us about hair typing. I live in the DC Metro area. Back in the olden days, I would go to a well-known braiding salon in the area and I remember the owner wrote a book, which I purchased, and one of the early chapters talked about hair typing. I think hair typing is similar to the social construct of race. It’s a way of putting hair into different categories so that you can separate what’s considered good hair from what’s considered not good hair. Keep up the good work ladies! I saw this slightly different because even though race is a man-made construct, the same way it is harmful to say I don’t see race at all. It’s the same thing when it comes to natural hair to say that you don’t see curl differences, curl pattern, differences, or texture differences. It is like saying there are no differences when clearly there is a difference. Yes, our hair being curly all needs moisture. Yes are hair all being curly may need some sort of a gel for some hold, but that level of hold is going to be different for different types and textures of hair. Choosing your gel is not just for the end all look result.
It took me forever to realize that I had fine hair. I had been trying to achieve certain looks by copying the exact steps of what I saw on videos. I caused so much damage with wrong techniques for my hair or doing certain techniques improperly. To correct that, for me, it was important to change my mindset to maintaining healthy hair and learning how to style it in a healthy manner. I now focus on consistency of my hair care routine. Before a health challenge in 2022, I used to have long hair, and honestly, it was like a mop because I didn't take care of it or know how to style it. I am much happier now with shorter, healthy hair that I can style. Bottom line, I get a lot more compliments now than when I had long hair.

I just looked for curly hair tutorials. I was looking for technique and proper care. It took about five years to get it all the way together but it was worth it. I love my curly hair.
Hair typing is helpful to get started with your natural hair journey. It helped me to find creators and influencers and professionals that had similar hair struggles to myself, and I learned from them. However, hair typing doesn’t inform how a product is going to work or work best for you. As you experiment and learn more, you’ll understand more about density, porosity and coarseness of your hair and that’s what really will help you to find what you need. My hope is that slowly, but surely the curl typing will vanish, but for now, I think it is a good jumping off point on your natural hair journey. It definitely helped me.
The issue is hair acceptance period. Everyone has wash and go hair. The problem is wanting their hair to look like someone else’s hair. Spending an hour applying a product to your hair is not washing and going.

I’m very happy I found this channel. I’m thinking about trying the products, the bundle. I think for many of us who had been trying to navigate how to take care of our natural hair, the chart wasn’t an option we chose. It chose us. It was one alternative to not hate our hair and try to learn how to care for it. However I’m happy to say I’m going to let it go after watching this video. I really really love this video. The one thing I HATE about being natural is the challenges and barriers we have in learning to care for it. I think it’s important for us not to shame each other for not knowing or ourselves. We don’t know what we don’t know but we can’t let that stop us from searching. there is a very deep void of hair knowledge that we are coming out of and it has a very large expansive historical context. But the trip is, it is very simple as we learn in this video. Self love and the right product. I also hate that that chart made me waist a lot of money playing with products!!! We want our damn money back, we need hair reparations 😂! I hate the hatred towards us as we dawn our natural crowns. Love the convo- however, I was just remembering how when I was in highshool i had NEVER encountered tight hair textures, including my own. Growing up around mostly white people and getting a relaxer at 8, and the few black people i encountered had relaxers as well- I didn’t have an example of what our hair looked like, or how it behaved. The curl types are certainly not the gospel, and that will not be the determinate of what products or specific care to use, but to have a category to be able to see another head of hair that shares my curl pattern is useful to me 🤷🏽♀️ And btw fellow content creator here- there is absolutely way more engagement on looser shinier curl patterns and it kind of does create a type of dysmorphia. 😥

The following day used the Strawberry champagne refresher spray. This made the mousse simply activated, Hahahah. But I also have the tropical oasis gel , I just did not use it yet because I was not sure of a combined use .

The truth is that each strand of hair is unique and we do ourselves a disservice by trying to pigeon hole it into just a few “types”. Also, surrounding environment matters - the air, the humidity level, and the water source. Hair performs differently under different conditions and there is no way to get around that. We have in our heads that hair is always supposed to look like a “perfect” wig when in fact more wigs should probably look like natural hair with differing textures on one head.
After forty years of using relaxers, I did the big chop and went natural. I love my hair now, thanks to the "chart" that helped me find products that will work for my hair. I understand my natural hair now by being educated about how to take care of it. The chart can be helpful. I think it all depends on how you view it. Ya'll are good educators

I love you guys... Look, GRAY HAIR... can we talk GRAY HAIR? The grayer my hair gets the more it's not like it was before... It's drier, it feels like my hair is clingy and tangley. It's wiry, the strands feel thinner. Does that make sense? And that's what frustrates me. Yess! You described all of my issues. I've natural for years and my hair gets to the same just below my collar bone length, and no longer than that. And my grays look UGLY. I'm not even lying. Hi. I see you put people under the dryer after styling and sometimes use a blow dryer at the roots for volume after that. Will you get the same results with an air dry? My granddaughter is autistic and won’t tolerate even being in the same room as a blow dryer. I have to physically lift her up and quickly storm through the threshold of public bathrooms and grocery stores before she has a chance to either drop down to the floor and not move or run in the opposite direction because she’s afraid the hand dryer in the bathroom or the bug fan at the store entrance is gonna activate. I would love to try your products on her if they work with air drying.
In my circle I am probably the most knowledgeable about natural hair, simply because I am older and embraced my natural hair even before het were born. I have a loose curl and when we talk about hair it's like I get dismissed it cos I am not 4c.
I also believe that I have different types of hair on my head because my hair is in sisterlocks but my hair at the back way below has a loser curl than the other areas of my hair
Speaking from my own experience, my tighter “ curl pattern” was called “Nappy Headed”. That was traumatic and it doesn’t always go away. The laughing makes it seem like you guys are down playing the reality of how people feel when it comes to finding the right products, and techniques for “our 4c hair”.
We agree that it shouldn't be hard for people with more coily textures to find good hair products. That's why we took the time to make sure our products are quality and can work on all hair types 🙌🖤
I agree hair typing is helpful. I think what the hair typing really does for people is help you feel like you have a shared experience with someone who has a similar hair texture as yourself. Just like how we have different groups of people/ different races of people. Race in and of itself is a man-made thing, but within those”races” we have a shared experience. so to me as a person that would say I have 3c/4a hair, it can be really hard when you use certain products that leaves your hair really flat yet defined or you have tons of volume, but no definition… and not to mention fighting humidity… People that have already very defined curls, have it a little bit easier than some that don’t and getting products to work for them. A lot of talk in the natural hair community sometimes is all about accepting your natural hair and if you want definition, you have to sacrifice volume, if you want volume you have to sacrifice definition, etc. but I think most people are just frustrated. We have to go to a hairstylist to get our hair done in a wash and go and spend around $275 just to have a wash and go done and somebody to teach us how to style our hair but then when you go home, you still struggle with getting your hair to turn out the way the hairstylist did it, and it just turns into an endless cycle of I want to accept my natural hair, but I still can’t get it to do what I would love it to do. So yes, I do appreciate products like Miche out there on the market today. I think hair products are getting better as time goes on, but I feel that there’s still a lot of frustration. How can we realistically do our hair ourselves at home and have the results that we are looking for and that last.

Its funny how all the people who have looser curls are triggered by the hair charting system and being referred to as having "good hair". The people with the"4C" hair int the meantime get why they are always asking "will this work for me/4C?" What would be more helpful than trying to downplay hair typing and laughing at it, is soending more time showing how products work for 4C hair, because, yes, most of us feel that anything will work for the looser types because thats how it appears to us. I think the hair typing system is silly. If u have curly hair most likely it is dry and there is a struggle keeping your curls moisturized. I hear I have good hair and that is why it styles easy.😮 they have no idea how long it took me to learn how to style my hair correctly with the products I use. The hair typing, that was created by Oprah’s stylist, doesn’t bother me. I don’t like the division amongst us. Be it loose curls vs tighter curls or good hair vs bad (all hair is good hair) or light skinned vs dark skinned. We need to unite. We need to come together and support one another.
I get what you mean. Unfortunately, growing up, even before we got the hair typing, black people looked at each other differently. You either had that "good hair" or were nappy headed. I admit, I still struggle with hair envy of the looser textures.

I know there's cycles to hair growth.I know everybody's cycle is different. My mom is a hairstylist so is my sister. But even they are learning about this natural hair thing. Yess! You described all of my issues. I've natural for years and my hair gets to the same just below my collar bone length, and no longer than that. And my grays look UGLY. I'm not even lying. The texture looks so bad on me. I tried growing it out during the pandemic and it looked and felt just the way described. I'm 4c but my grays look 4z Lol
Genuine question: Since your natural state is the strongest and healthiest your hair could possibly be, how will using texture altering chemicals help the problems you listed with your hair since it’ll be in a weakened and more vulnerable state?

Andre Walker, Oprah's hairdresser created that discriminating hair type chart?! Then he had the nerve to say people with 4c the tighter curl pattern, will need to get a relaxer?! The other thing, why are people putting texturizer in their hair or texlaxing?! I agree, for a wash and go, it's the technique that works for your hair and finding the right products for your hair type and patience.
cannot be surprised that it was one of Oprah's people. she supports that type of behavior. go back and watch all of her watched shows and how she portrayed us. she created a show for white women to look down on us. watch them again.
And don’t forget he made a hair care line for said discriminating hair chart, which flopped almost as soon as it came out.

Hi. I see you put people under the dryer after styling and sometimes use a blow dryer at the roots for volume after that. Will you get the same results with an air dry? My granddaughter is autistic and won’t tolerate even being in the same room as a blow dryer. I have to physically lift her up and quickly storm through the threshold of public bathrooms and grocery stores before she has a chance to either drop down to the floor and not move or run in the opposite direction because she’s afraid the hand dryer in the bathroom or the bug fan at the store entrance is gonna activate. I would love to try your products on her if they work with air drying.

In my circle I am probably the most knowledgeable about natural hair, simply because I am older and embraced my natural hair even before het were born. I have a loose curl and when we talk about hair it's like I get dismissed it cos I am not 4c.
I also believe that I have different types of hair on my head because my hair is in sisterlocks but my hair at the back way below has a loser curl than the other areas of my hair

Speaking from my own experience, my tighter “ curl pattern” was called “Nappy Headed”. That was traumatic and it doesn’t always go away. The laughing makes it seem like you guys are down playing the reality of how people feel when it comes to finding the right products, and techniques for “our 4c hair”.
We agree that it shouldn't be hard for people with more coily textures to find good hair products. That's why we took the time to make sure our products are quality and can work on all hair types 🙌🖤
I agree hair typing is helpful. I think what the hair typing really does for people is help you feel like you have a shared experience with someone who has a similar hair texture as yourself. Just like how we have different groups of people/ different races of people. Race in and of itself is a man-made thing, but within those”races” we have a shared experience. so to me as a person that would say I have 3c/4a hair, it can be really hard when you use certain products that leaves your hair really flat yet defined or you have tons of volume, but no definition… and not to mention fighting humidity… People that have already very defined curls, have it a little bit easier than some that don’t and getting products to work for them. A lot of talk in the natural hair community sometimes is all about accepting your natural hair and if you want definition, you have to sacrifice volume, if you want volume you have to sacrifice definition, etc. but I think most people are just frustrated. We have to go to a hairstylist to get our hair done in a wash and go and spend around $275 just to have a wash and go done and somebody to teach us how to style our hair but then when you go home, you still struggle with getting your hair to turn out the way the hairstylist did it, and it just turns into an endless cycle of I want to accept my natural hair, but I still can’t get it to do what I would love it to do. So yes, I do appreciate products like Miche out there on the market today. I think hair products are getting better as time goes on, but I feel that there’s still a lot of frustration. How can we realistically do our hair ourselves at home and have the results that we are looking for and that last.

Its funny how all the people who have looser curls are triggered by the hair charting system and being referred to as having "good hair".
The people with the"4C" hair int the meantime get why they are always asking "will this work for me/4C?"
What would be more helpful than trying to downplay hair typing and laughing at it, is soending more time showing how products work for 4C hair, because, yes, most of us feel that anything will work for the looser types because thats how it appears to us. Perception is reality and there are a lot of us "4C"s who are just teying to learn and would like the help.

I think the hair typing system is silly. If u have curly hair most likely it is dry and there is a struggle keeping your curls moisturized. I hear I have good hair and that is why it styles easy.😮 they have no idea how long it took me to learn how to style my hair correctly with the products I use. I also get tired of ppl asking what do u use to get your hair like that ? I’m like it ain’t about the product it is about technique with a good product. Learn technique and most products you have brought will work on your hair.

You can't treat fine thin hair like thick course hair. Fine thin hair is more delicate.

The hair typing, that was created by Oprah’s stylist, doesn’t bother me. I don’t like the division amongst us. Be it loose curls vs tighter curls or good hair vs bad (all hair is good hair) or light skinned vs dark skinned. We need to unite. We need to come together and support one another.
I get what you mean. Unfortunately, growing up, even before we got the hair typing, black people looked at each other differently. You either had that "good hair" or were nappy headed. I admit, I still struggle with hair envy of the looser textures.

I pray you learn to love your curls. I have tight coily, kinky curls and I love them. I was determined to learn how to style it and now I get compliments on my hair. It’s a mindset, you can get there.
