*Orphanage Update:* We surpassed our goal for the money raised for the orphanage plus enough to keep it running for the foreseeable future in less than 24 hours ($80,000 USD). Orphanage building costs and materials, daily food for 50-60 children, clean drinking water, school fees etc. will now all be taken care of thanks to your overwhelming generosity and response to this campaign. Thanks to all who donated! I personally will be involved in fund transfer instalments, project monitoring and general overseeing of this project to ensure it is carried out in an efficient manner. If you want to see updates of the project in the future, you can stay up to date on my instagram: instagram.com/indigo.traveller/ Your generosity has blown us away and now many children have a better chance at life because of your support. Helping and affecting the world around you isn't Rocket Science and Nick you've just proven that. Thank you so much for contributing your quota to the betterment of these lives and I really hope that one day Makoko would get the right doze of love and attention it deserves. A sane and responsible Government would have turned this large community into an international tourist attraction by now but whatever demon that cursed our leaders must have gone an extra mile. Once again, stay blessed Nick.

Is the campaign still running? i will really like to contibute. Thanks and God bless you in all you do.
Will you also visit Abuja or is the usual, dirty, disorganisation , decay etc narrative that you are interested in pushing about Nigeria (yet again), like the others? A story half told is not the complete truth. You can't just show one side, dear.
I live in Lagos, I was born and raised here. We all know Makoko, everyone has driven past this community at least a thousand times. This video makes me feel guilty that it took someone from another continent to show me how life goes 1 hour away from me. It’s a wake up call to help your neighbor in whatever little way you can, you really don’t need to be a millionaire to care for those who are unable to care for themselves
We always need to help each other. ✌️ Take care my friend We need political leaders to be more caring about others instead of caring just about money and power.
♥️♥️ no guilt my friend .. we don't know what we don't know .. you can only make changes once you know .. I hope you can help make your country a better place to live and inspire others as well! God bless!♥️
I like how a rich actor gave them an empty promise despite him probably being rich af and a dude with only a million subs on UA-cam managed to raise 80k for the orphanage . Hollywood and it's actors man , they're really well known as an actor for a reason
The guy showing him around is amazing he looks like he has the ability to move out to a better neighbourhood and have a much better life in general but he remains there, helps his community and shares with others whatever he was blessed with.
I stayed on the mainland in Lagos before moving to texas…dude it’s hard to move out. What you see here is not even as bad. Like the government is literally fucking it’s citizens in broad daylight and we literally can’t do nothing bout it bc the police kills ppl in the day
Im half nigerian and my dad is full nigerian and i went there when i was about 13. We went to Lagos to a part that was a bit wealthier because there are some pretty rich parts of Lagos but also sadly very poor parts. But what i’ve learned is if someone grew up somewhere in nigeria they know that whole place like the back of their hand. Props to this guy
Well he sure didn't deserve a handshake - I cannot find the timestamp but somewhere at the beginning, when he gets introduced, he reached out as if to shake hands but our host-boy didn't get it and just kept talking.
Their life may seem terrible from a Eurocentric point of view, but for them this lifestyle is normal. Otherwise, they would begin to improve their lives through hard work.
@@bernd32 no they don't deserve to live like this, this is not a good way to live period. unfortunately, hard work is not enough to improve your life in Nigeria these days, there are ALOT of smart, hardworking people in the country but the government and corruption continually fail them. There were country wide protests last year but the government cracked down on them like crazy. it's sad.
when a generation of nigerians reach their breaking point, the people will rise up against an inept and corrupt government. corruption affects everything in the country. Yes it's inspiring but people are still suffering when they do not have to be.
It really makes you think. These people seem really happy and have next to nothing and here in the US there are so many people that complain about the stupidest stuff (including myself). I really admire these people. It makes me much more grateful for what I have and puts things into perspective. Great video.
The children are happy because when you're born into a place every experience you have is built there; everything is normal. If you're a child outside playing with friend you're going to be happy anywhere. The man being interviewed is the chief's son, in comparison to those around him he is in luxury, so he will be in higher spirit. Other people smile when they see clear outsiders (white) because they're a very rare sight, especially in their neighborhood. It's like having a guest over as a kid, except the guest is a celebrity. It's sometimes true that people in these places can often times be happier, but you should keep these things in mind for greater perspective to recognize that you're never truly seeing an unfiltered picture of life.
True. Also, if Nigeria is rich in resources, the opposite is what's seen on the ground. It still shows the image we've always known. Hopefully its government is working on it.

A friend who was born and raised in this slum went on to attend the University of Lagos and, subsequently, the University of Cambridge for his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering. Today, he works at Total Oil Producing Company in France. As they say, “impossible is nothing.”
This looks like an amazing place with amazing people. It might be a "slum" but to some people from the West, if they chose to just go live there for a year, it would be the most character building experience of their life. I want to perhaps one day get away from this life and just go live in a place like this for a while.
I met this young man and his dad when I went to Makoko with a production team, such a warm and kind man. That visit opened my eyes to a lot of things. I still wonder how a community like this is filled with people with kind hearts. Thanks for raising money for the orphanage, you are amazing

I’m 20 years old from the uk stressing about money but really don’t know how good I’ve got it. These brothers are living in a tin shack above Faeces infested water playing ps2 and still smiling. Crazy. Appreciate what you have.
I lived in Mali as an expat kid, the poverty i saw was worse than anything I’ve seen even by Indian standards. Yet, the poorest ppl I met seemed to be the happiest. There was one guy named Moussa who would give me peaches every morning for free that he sold. So on my way back from school everyday, I’d buy lunch for him. He kept a lookout for me and never let the others bother me. He was the sweetest man, Africans have hearts made of gold. The next generation will change the future for the better I’m sure!

When he was explaining how he built that little space for the kids to play. It broke my heart but it filled me with so much love at the same time. This Nigerian man is an angel we are entertaining. I hope someone sees this and can help this community. Hopefully I can one day.
The Nigerian man is being used and exploited, we don't need a white man traveling through out Africa show the seedy and shitty side of anywhere in Africa, this does not help Africans image when we travel, I am a world traveler, originally from the Caribbean now a resident of West Africa, you should see the dirty look I get from white people as we switch flights in the airport and sometimes have to identify I am flying from West Africa to the Caribbean.
you are endlessly naive. there are quite a few red flags troughout the video. the guy never translated what people have said. the boy said 5 words and homie is talking 5 minutes how this boy only wants a school and then pushes him away. on top said his father the EXACT same words. mhh. then.. these CHEIF type guys are mostly schaman type priests that sell magic water and stuff to there community (3 playstations). the way he said.. if you give us money god will give you even more money in the future. this is "prosperity gospel" bullshit and came total natural to his mind. never in 10.000 years human history someone became powerfull bcs he was nice. this whole thing was planned from start to finish to give a certain expression. nigeria is quite popular for there clever ways of scamming people. he even called cheifs son the next nigerian prince rofl.. like an email scam, you cant make this up rofl.. africas main problem is that most of the money never ends in the places it was given for. bcs corrupt politics/cheifs. you only buyed this guy his new PS5 and they take the next homeless boy to impress the next naive westerners. the no gym or no training stuff was already a lie. he does at least pushups and stuff. his whole family was there you could see there genetics (normal, no one was muscular).. lol! PLUS, you dont buy money for other exchange rates on the streets. this video host bought most likely counterfeit money at the start. money has a fixed value. this whole video is so fucking NAIVE! you totally understimate how clever/creative these people are. it never came to your mind that these uneducated people could fool you highly educated "adult childs" with no real life experience. i coudl not even blame the africans.. i would do exactly the same. so.. no hate for them.. have fun with your new ps5!
We don't realise how well off we are until we see other human beings living in such horrendous conditions. I'm so grateful I was born in a developed country and it's sad to see that people have to live like this to survive.
Developed countries never last because they all eventually become feminist ideology infested. Essentially causing many men to check out of society. They compensate by bringing in immigrants to offset losses in brithrate but it's a temporary fix because mixing cultures is not as easy as they make it out to be.
The only reason that we can see developed countries today their greed if such countries wasnt so greedy for other countries resources we wouldbt see these poor countries all over the world the capitlasim is ruining millions of lives all over the world

@@naomigary7930 yes, but it's very often due to corruption as well. After gaining independence, the government often creates too many regulations or too little. One of saddest things about this is that Nigeria earns so much revenue from it’s oil exports but clearly very little of that is infested in helping it’s own citizens. Lack of public toilets, lack of decent infrastructure & massive poverty while a small percentage live lavishly whilst the vast majority languish in abject poverty. Sad 😔

The man who does the videos doesn't make a spectacle of the people he interviews or the places they live. He doesn't make jokes or find the need to be funny. He brings awareness to peoples lives and shows that know matter how differently we live, we are all mankind
That’s something that really impressed me, too. Most reporters would be gasping and making a massive deal out of everything right in from of the folks who live there. Obviously there are a lot of serious issues. But humiliating them isn’t the answer. Really talented guy.
what an eye-opening video! i really appreciate how you captured the realities of life in Nigeria's biggest slum. it's definitely important to showcase these stories. that said, i wonder if focusing so much on the struggles might overshadow the resilience and creativity of the people living there. it seems like there’s a lot of potential for positive change, but the narrative often stays stuck in despair. just a thought!
The indigo community is strong, we are half way already to reaching the target to raise money for the orphanage. And it's only a couple of hours since the video was published. Love the community in this channel.
It’s funny how I’m a Nigerian who’s lived in Nigeria all my life and I still get fascinated by this video. Never actually seen life in the slums so this video feels like it’s about somewhere completely different.
You do realise that the slum is super tiny compared to Lagos? You realise that there are skyscrapers & luxury homes for thousands of kilometers in Lagos but he only chose to show you the tiny slums??? You do realise that the wealthiest black people on earth are Nigerians but he chose to avoid all the luxury but instead chose to show you where illegal immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers live an off-grid slum life??? Unfortunately, most of them who live in the tiny slum started off as refugees, illegal immigrants and asylum seekers living off-grid. The Nigerian government cannot be responsible for their wellbeing and welfare because they are stateless people. Secondly, poverty can never be eradicated on earth. This reminds me of all the poor homeless people i saw in streets of America. There were many people who had no clean water, food, heating, electricity & healthcare? Sadly, poverty is everywhere... It's the same here in the UK as well.

What amazes me is that irrespective of these people living in extreme poverty and poor conditions, their ethics and sense of community is astounding. My experience in a developed nation is 'Everyone for themselves'
I was just thinking that. Amazing sense of community there, whereas in developed countries if you strayed onto someones overgrown, unused field you'll be shouted at or sued.
Don't get me wrong, I love my country and I'm thankful that I was born in a developed nation, but I feel there's an inherent downside that comes with it in the form of huge social repercussions. My relationship with my neighbours starts and ends with me saying hello to them in the morning, and there's no way I could rely on any of them for help. I asked my neighbours if they would file a police statement for me after they had witnessed someone scrape up against my car. Unfortunately I never saw it so I couldn't say who it was, although two of my neighbours saw it and told me they knew who was driving the other car. They said they would, so I called the police about it and told them my neighbours saw it - Police returned after a few minutes of talking to them with the bad news that they allegedly never saw anything. Very common behaviour here because no one wants to give a few hours to a courtroom for someone else, although the story would be different if it was them or their family that needed it.
Good people make good leaders. Good leaders make good communities. No one trusts each other in the west these days, so everyone hides. I would blame the media, but even that is too simple. It's all of us. The whole thing is rotten from the governments down.
That’s because in a developed country you simply don’t rely on people. Though I wouldn’t consider their ethics necessarily above ours. I would say the conditions make it so hard.
@@WJWeber You don’t rely on people because you cant, not because you don’t want to. Many times I’ve needed help and there was no one. People are so selfish here in the U.S. - not everyone but many and most.
The Indigo Traveller is such a gentleman. Never does he mention the horrible stench that we know comes from the raw sewage. He is always pleasant and gracious. And, yes the Prince is handsome and also very kind-hearted.
How did you know about the stench only because he did highlight the shit getting into the water within proximity to human habitation, you missed the tricks of the camera.
I can relate so much with this feeling. I've lived too in cities with very big inequality gaps and it is surreal to think about how in a less than 100 km radius someone in the same city would be living in wildly different circumstances in a slum. And while yes, I want everyone to see the nicer side of the places I love, it is so important too to shed light into the problems and show them as they are, with shades of beauty, sadness, joy and more.
The man showing him around has an amazing smile. He reminds me of my dad so much, same smile, same hobbies so I was just smiling through this video the whole way though.
I was born and bred in Nigeria. I did believe I suffered greatly growing up. Thanks to this video for opening my eyes, to how minute my struggles were. I shouldn’t have watched this video because it made me cry but I am glad I did. This made me sad and happy at the same time. God bless everyone working towards making their life bearable.
It is eye opening. My family is from Jamaica and I believed that they had it pretty bad (from all the stories they told me) but seeing this, I have been more than blessed and I am extremely thankful that I have seen this. What people consider poor across different nations is fascinating and what people have or their mindset despite that is equally fascinating. We don't know we are poor or rich until we go to the otherside of the world.
Actually this video is just perpetuating stereotypes to the West. Great comment . I don’t think that Ben Stiller will watch this but I agree it was nice and tactful the way the Chief reminded Ben Stiller . It’s rather sad when extremely wealthy people make promises to a poor community and don’t fulfil that promise . And Ben Stiller wouldn’t have to pay a penny. He could get his PA to organise a charity dinner , tickets sold to Uber wealthy people including his A lister friends . It could easily be sponsored , with raffle tickets , an auction and open donations . Btw , not to be rude but it was a school Ben Stiller said he’d build .

You may be going thru it physically or mentally but the fact someone can swim in sewage probably dead bodies in there too, with a smile on their face just shows you it's about how you handle your situation, positivety I pray for them.
This guy has the right idea, I'd rather go places that no tourist would go to and experience something completely different and this was certainly eye opening

As a Nigerian living in Canada, this brings alot of memories. Can't explain how humbling and same time, exciting this video is. Thanks for this immersive video, I am so grateful for my experiences growing up in Nigeria. It made me super strong to face the real world.
Kinda hoping the guy that showed you around started a daily vlog type of thing of life in the slums. He has a great personality/soul and I think he can really take off with it and Create change, not only in his life but the whole community. It would give people a more in depth look on how their surviving every day and hopefully get more people to understand the sharp contrast of how people are living outside of their own little bubble. Where do I donate to get this man a laptop and camera lol.

This is just breathtaking! I have watched several documentaries videos on this slum area! The difference you bring in the way you have captured the storyline is driven by the local experience-which makes your video so powerful. Giving the young man the chance to tell his own story is just incredible. I hope the funds raised will be used to find sustainable solutions to this problem.

Segun's story brought tears to my eyes. After going through a lot at 12, I couldn't do anything alone for long without getting scared. He is only ten and I can see the fear, sadness and trauma in his eyes and I wish I could help him and kids like him.
I have been humbled. I've lived in a RV for three years now and I have been complaining because of my living situation. Shame on me! These beautiful people are happy and thier beautiful white teeth smiles brought tears to my eyes. If I could I would hug every person in their community. Thier bright clothes are like a beautiful and colorful artwork. I was so happy to learn that the water doesn't make anyone sick. That's what you call supercharged immune systems. I am also so happy that the fundraiser for the orphanage was met! The children are so precious and their smiles are priceless. I pray that God blesses them and keeps the joy in their faces every day and forever. Thank you for these very humbling videos. God bless 🙏 stay safe❤️
That child broke my heart. :( This little community on the water is pretty positive it seems. I like their system if someone commits a crime to expose them to the community and then make them leave. If their is a fight then they make them make up and make peace with each other. I hope they get the orphanage built an the children get education, food to eat, and a nice place to sleep. That way they won’t have to keep moving around sleeping and eating where and when ever they get the opportunity to. I’m going to donate to the community🤞
I came to donate, and it’s beyond amazing to see how generous this community of viewers have been to the point where I can’t even donate because the goal has been surpassed! You guys are amazing!
something i love about these documentaries is that you make the people the face of the adventure. Telling their story, and in a way making them the celebrity instead of some other people who make it about themselves.

One of saddest things about this is that Nigeria earns so much revenue from it’s oil exports but clearly very little of that is infested in helping it’s own citizens.

Seeing places like this, that most of us viewing, are so far from and fully understanding; viewing someone so positive and uplifting really shows how no matter the life experience anyone can make due with what they have, stay positive and live life to the fullest. This is a great video. Shoutout to my dude
What a beautiful human being Sunday is! It gives hope to see such people aspiring in a community where help is much needed!
And again Nick, what a masterpiece you created here and thanks so much for covering these untold stories and unseen situations. You are outstanding in what you are doing! Thank you so much. Best wishes Sevi :)
Thank you as always Sevi, much love!
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾💯
sorry to dissapoint you but the water is 100% causing disease for those who swim in it:/
Living in a RV is my dream ^^ maybe one day it will come true
You pray that God blesses them? Who do you think put them in this situation?
@@chase5298 Their corrupt government, which has betrayed them, God isn't with us.
That child broke my heart. :(
This little community on the water is pretty positive it seems.
I just was looking for the link to donate and the donation amount has been met and surpassed. That’s awesome 👏 Go Nick! ❤ Much love from USA
I came to donate, and it’s beyond amazing to see how generous this community of viewers have been to the point where I can’t even donate because the goal has been surpassed! You guys are amazing!
Same!
same but ill email nick just in case

Sadly only 5% of the money will go to the kids the rest will just Go to this UA-camr
something i love about these documentaries is that you make the people the face of the adventure. Telling their story, and in a way making them the celebrity instead of some other people who make it about themselves.
exactly
YES! You said that perfectly!
Wait, what? $80,000 in less than 24hrs? Wow, this is overwhelmingly amazing. I'm Nigerian and I know this simple act of kindness will better the lives of those kids in no small way. God bless everyone who has donated.
@Ultravista.SGgovernment wanted to demolish the place but they refused. They themselves are the problem, they refused to leave the place.
@Ultravista.SG so if i come to your neighborhood, ruin the place with my homelessness its not my fault? it's government fault for not building me a free house?
God bless them all
@@jyde50 you’re a terrible person
@@cnote99_Look at the video, the terrible person is the guy who is filming innocent people and putting their lives on youtube to embarrass them.
Sunday is such a friendly and helpful guy, God bless and protect him 💜
I watched a lot of videos about Lagos recently and would love to visit there myself one day.
You are always welcome my dear love to meet you
