- It’s one of the most populous cities on the planet with 22 million inhabitants, predicted to increase to 30 million by 2035. Nicknamed ‘the infernal Metropolis’, Mumbai is a city in perpetual development. But with millions of people living in slums located on valuable real estate, how can city planners balance the competing needs of the population?
In Dharavi, the largest slum in Asia, over one million people are packed into the slum. But although its residents are poor, there’s a real dynamism. Mahesh, 27, was born and lives in this slum and would never leave it. He runs a recycling plant and employs around 20 people. Dharavi’s underground economy is thought to generate 800 million euros per year. But it also lies on prime real estate in the very centre of Mumbai so its future is in doubt.
Every day, new towers of glass or concrete emerge from the earth. With the support of the municipality, real estate tycoon, Babulal Varma, razes slums to build luxury apartments for the upper classes. As the city constantly expands, it pushes into the surrounding forests and natural spaces, such as Sanjay Gandhi Park. The fifty leopards who live there regularly make forays into the new housing estates. They attack stray dogs, but also the inhabitants. Each year, several people are killed by feline attacks. At night, forest department rangers patrol to prevent leopard incursions.

I'm from a very chilled out part of India. I lived and worked in Mumbai for 5 years and it F-ed my head up real bad. When you have a house and a garden of your own in your own hometown, it's not worth finding work in a city like Mumbai.

The part where the documentary shows the promises of the execs against the contrast of the reality of the poor people that have been screwed over by the corporation is so incredible and valuable.
Big big props to the crew for recording and showing everything. Just another proof of why you NEVER take the word of a rich exec guy.
Right, but you also cant really rely on or trust poor squatters that dont produce anything and dont pay taxes or contribute to their communities and make future development impossible on the land that they do not own.
Theyre basically stealing to begin with. Its a huge problem in 3rd world countries that masses of squatters overtake peoples land that they own, and fight to keep it, as if were still in the middle ages.

My mum is a business woman and travels all over Asia, Africa and Middle East. She said she has never seen so much extreme poverty in any city like Mumbai and New Delhi worsened by the overpopulation and hygienic and infrastructure l challenges! During a tour they told them many people in the cities are born on the streets, live and die on the streets with no access to toilets while sharing the streets with domestic animals like cows and pets! 😢

As of 2023, India's has been on a slow but gradual decline below 2, with some estimates showing it to be between 1.5 and 2

Word of the day: gratitude. I teach high school English, and many of my students are from India. They are kind, smart, funny, and dedicated to their education. There are days teaching seems like drudgery, then I see documentaries like this one that remind me that tens of millions of people would gladly trade places with me. If you have a job that is rewarding and allows you to live a good life, be thankful.

I went to Mumbia in 2010, when only 8 million people lived there, the culture shock absolutely melted my face off, I just could not fathom what I was seeing, stayed in a hotel over looking Dharavi, it smelt like unholy retribution.

I once watched a youtube documentary interviewing Native Americans living on the res where many of their youths complained about being poor. One of their tribal leaders, who once studied in India, told them "you don't know poor until you've been to places like India where kids had to work in dangerous conditions and families have to burn dung for fire in order to boil water just to make coffee.

In '92 with my parents and a dream, we left India and came to Canada. I was 2 yrs old. I visited again when I was 8yr 6mo old - Bombay was quite an experience. The trains were packed, there is no personal space, the smell of perspiration was thick. Goa was beautiful, a once hidden oasis that I am sure is destroyed now. I have heard the beaches are far from what they were 20 years ago.

Its a shame what has happened to India, but Canada is buckling under the strain of all the freshly imported Indians and their malicious in-group preferences. Everyone else is expected to be diverse when hiring but its commonly known Indians only seek to hire other Indians and try to push out native canadians. The real estate prices in Mumbai are staggeringly high even compared to the US. Wasn't expecting it.

True apartment price are way high than compared to usa. Our apartment costed us around 2 lakh dollar size of apartment arount 470 sqaurefeet

I've never known noise like it when I was in Mumbai. Constant beeping of car horns. It is nonstop. Some places in Europe are bad, but it really just sounds like almost a constant buzz of horns in Mumbai.

in Indian society the caste system is very old and quite deeply ingrained. people from the slums, the dirt poor, the menial workers and garbage collectors of society are not treated the same as blue and white collar workers. they'll house them as a penance because the law requires it, but they don't necessarily see them as deserving of it.

Over population is a very scary reality for many developing nations and almost always perpetuates poverties.
The birthrate in India has actually dropped. A demographic adjustment is being made as more and more Indians move from poverty to better living situations. China went through this and many people were lifted out of poverty as the country modernized. It's not perfect, but nothing ever is.
It is absolutely infernal. I lived in new Bombay (navi Mumbai) and it was much better but i never got used to it. Long story short, i left after three years and have zero regrets. All im going to say is some things arent worth it.. Not just that one can only have an idea of the number of people during the moonsoon season when the tracks get waterlogged and the trains are unusable. I recall seeing this up close and personal one august and that is when i decided enough was enough. Zero regrets

I realized I live a good life, but after watching this, there really is nothing to complain about in my day to day existence.

Way to go with this full circle documentary! I wasn't expecting the surprise not surprise ending that the real-estate developer has been detained.
I went there and the open sewers were the most disappointing part. I feel even the poorest and the richest person would agree that a good underground or at least closed sewer system would be beneficial for all. For such a massive and important city to still have a lack of sewer infrastructure is truly sad to witness.

It seems that the people who live in the slums could solve these issues better with all the resourcefulness they have! Seeing such problems doesn’t appear like we are as intelligent as we think we are!
Saying each caged leopard holds a “killer” to me is incorrect! Each cage holds a powerful, majestic animal that is NOT meant to be caged!!! We are supposed to SHARE this planet not claim everything as our own and destroy animals habitats in the process!!My heart goes out to the people who have been impacted by the leopards but it is wrong to cage them! Why doesn't the government invest in contraception programmes ? Reducing the population would help.
Indias's TFR is already well below 2.1, close to several European countries at around 1.8, and falling down.
India needs more children, not less, otherwise it will head to a population collapse in around 50 years that is already underway in Japan and Korea, and soon to begin in China.
The real problem with Mumbai is that it has a good 'reputation' so people from elsewhere in India keep pouring in.
Furthermore, the city was originally a small fishing town, and has almost 0 history of urban living, compared to ancient cities like Pataliputra (Patna) or Avanti (Ujjain). Due to this reason, there was and is no proper structure to the city.
Expansion of railways or other things that can accommodate a larger populace is essentially impossible due to the modern sky high land rates. It would be a beurocratic nightmare also, to simultaneously buy out land from tens of thousands of people just to build a single extra rail line.
Everyone living in these poor conditions deserves to be living in this manner, as they've voluntarily chosen to enter what used to be a tiny fishing village turned megacity.
Living in Rome with all its problem I feel very lucky. Sometimes we don't realize how lucky we are living in Europe or in a western country.

A great video, but it can't capture the SMELLS of Bombay! I lived there for 3 years and I can tell you that the heat, crowds, and odors are truly overwhelming. The Indian people I met are very friendly, helpful, hardworking, and very smart. It's a shame that such poverty exists.

I'm born and raised in the Netherlands. My first time in India was Mumbai. And... Well, it was quite an experience. I've visited many cities, on all continents (except Oceania), from many countries, rich, poor and the middling, the global north and the global south, but the two cities that hit me the hardest in terms of scale and scope were Mumbai and Cairo. Delhi - though much larger than Mumbai - doesn't have such a severe congestion issue as Mumbai. I've spent a lot of time in India, and planning to do much more, and as much as i love the country, Mumbai is a beast that i simply cannot tame and generally don't want to stay for longer than i have to. (i've mostly been in the south and the north of the country, which i can highly recommend) And this documentary has illustrated it perfectly, both in all its good and its bad. The surprisingly friendly and upbeat character people have in the face of what we would consider an urban hell is one of them, and i appreciated that the documentary also gave that some light.
There's a lot of misconceptions people have about India, but i found this docu to be very accurate. I learned a lot more from watching this, and it was interesting to see the interviews, both from the high society realtors to the people that live in the slums. It's a crazy contrast. Dhanyawad!
I think just about every Indian city and even a lot of towns are like that. India has a lot of space, but these cities were built in an era before city planning was a thing, and they are just mazes of narrow congested roads and tightly packed buildings.

OMG. Indonesian railway used to be like India 13 years ago, but in the past 13 years, our railway has been reformed 180⁰. Now according to World Economic Forum 2019, our railway quality ranks 18th in the world. It used to rank 80th+ back in 2009.
And now in 2023 we have just had our first 350 km/hour high-speed rail completed.

I once was on vacation in Turkey and visited Istanbul. Wonderful vibrant city but the immensity kind of overwhelmed me...we as Dutchies are not used to multi million people cities and the sheer size and people on the streets gave me some anxiety...but that's just me. Now..Istanbul is huge but Mumbai has to be all of that x 10 or something?? I could not walk the streets there..too many people. Guess I'm just a simple guy from the Dutch "polder" but I like that.

India - a challenging and beautiful, different place. if you are on a budget or limited time - then you will not miss much by side-stepping Mumbai - and just giving Delhi a couple of days. They are both aggressive and tiring city environments-- and there are such fantastic other cities/areas to spend you time in.

This is horrible, instead of trying to improve the life of the people they are demolishing their houses and pushing them to the outskirts because "they ruin our view and we need space."
This is called urbanization.Everything has its own pricing. Once a country choose to develop, its ppl will be more or less passively accepting the fact. Infrustructure brings GDP, GDP brings growth, growth brings taxes, taxex brings reinvestment into edcuation, housing improvment, military and everything. India population is a benefit for growth but also a problem for fairness. When it comes fairness for 1.4 billion ppl, there are absolute no fairness to talk. Real estate developer like Omkar and recycling waste businesses in the film benefit from growth at the expense of most other ppl interests, at least at the present.
It's illegal developments. These people just came here without any permission to build and set up shacks. Say if there is some natural disaster and a lot of these houses get destroyed, I'm sure you will be blaming the government for it.
