Their leader is a great person, my heart melted when he said Education is what they needed. Once they get an education it's ok with him if they will leave. Thinking for his community to have a better life than thinking of power. He is so selfless he's amazing! I hope one day Makoko will be a better community.
African leaders are deceptively good at making speechesthat can move the masses . Our former President , R.G Mugabe (a dictator and corrupt president) was the Guru , when it came to those kind of speeches . A good number of leaders here are just wolves in sheep's clothing .

When the chief-to-be said that he's okay with the children getting education and leaving the community behind, I cried a little. That's a quality leader in the midst of poverty and oppression. May Life provide you and the village prosperity and may the Universe grant you powers to be better than your oppressors. Can't believe I'm crying watching a food show on UA-cam.

I have to admit, I watch Sonny's videos here and there. But this one really hit me with how lucky and how we take so many things in our life for granted.
Those guys would rather die, than be moved out of that paradise, you assume to be a slum...their happiness is not in the things you think will fulfil you...but in their humanity, community, socialization & inner peace. Anything that wants to disrupt this, will make them extremely sad...

This is the reality in most of Nigeria. I don't know why people want to paint this false picture that poor people like being poor because at least they're happy. Yeah we may be happy but we are also very unhappy.
The fact the future head of the village wants the children to go be educated and take on better lives and jobs is very touching. To have love for his home and want to keep its culture alive while also wanting change for the better for those who seek it is very unique. I hope the kids do travel and spread aspects of their culture to other areas of the world

I have oh..I lived in Lagos and we had to go preach and share food there I was like 10yrs old..I felt so bad I didn't even know people can live like this

you can see the joy in the childrens eyes. they dont know hardship they only know they are alive and regardless of their circumstance they are happy. its so beautiful to see how they persevere. these people are all so strong!! and beautiful as well, their complexions are perfect and their eyes are so full of power like he said.
His sensitivity towards their culture plus his easy interaction with these dignified people is impressive. I am glad he enjoyed that delicious looking lunch.

All I can say is, I feel soo humbled. I am Nigerian and I know things could be better but it's the fact that 'suffering and smiling' has become the norm. Looking at the bright side of things, it shows how resilient we are as a people, we thrive in whatever situation we find ourselves in. But still, things can be a lot better. By the way...loved this episode!
I Lived in Africa for my first 20 years now I live in a developed country and I came to realize despite the hardships there, Africa is rich of life, but here we are rich of money but poor of life, paying bills and working throughout our lives is all I think now, THOSE PEOPLE ARE STRONG AND HAPPY in some way despite everything

I had a great childhood. now we all grown up. grandparents passed away. we all have bigger and gated apartments and cars we also have holiday home in other city . but our family are falling apart no more close. the truth is we were much happier when we didn't have much. material things can't bring your happiness. most importantly you can't take it with when you die.
I love this channel I watched it throughout my pregnancy and now my daughter is going on six months and watches it with me. I love being able to show her not only different foods, but cultures from around the world it’s like a little classroom of learning great job!

My God the people there have the purest sound when they sing, it's like getting a first hand glimpse of the celebration songs of their ancestors for a moment. These people are worth helping specifically because they are so spiritually strong as a people and the community even though their own government has abandoned them
This floating village is GOLDEN. Beautiful culture and delicious seafoods. If the government cleaned up the environment, keep the beautiful community there and provide the children education, this floating village will become the BEST major tourist attraction for the country. Also this is the best foods show of all; the video speaks for itself. Thank you Sonny for showing us many hidden gems in the world.
No, do not make it a tourist destination. Once that happens local industry and culture leaves, and hoards of tourists occupy the place instead. Not trying to be politically correct, but that would ruin the town. Many places in NA and Europe can attest.
Maybe the people could be a little proactive & clean up their own mess instead of continuing to throw trash into the water and relying on the government to do everything for them & clean up after them. The whole world points their fingers at Western countries over pollution when it's really countries like this that are mainly responsible for the fact that our oceans are full of plastic.

I have been in Lagos for 5 years. I cross that bridge at least twice every month. I see these houses on the water and think to myself, this is a part of Lagos I do not have any business with. The truth is, we are all connected and watching this has given me a better sense of the things we take for granted. I will pay a visit to this community on water, visit their homes, eat and drink with them as my brothers and sisters. Help us make Nigeria better.

This is why this is the best channel on UA-cam! Its more than a food blog but more of a cultural experience and I love how Sonny connect with the locals and sees the world in their eyes!

I know this is late but I love how Sonny is always nice to the locals and when things don’t go his way he looks annoyed, but keeps his temper it reminds me that everyone is human and and I like how his videos don’t only show him at his best, Great video I wish to feed that city someday and I hope that the city starts helping to clean the trash because I feel that the so called “eyesore” will be less of an eyesore if you actually help preserve the culture and way of living
This show is powerfully more than about food, it's about the whole identity and personality of a people and place. I have never known about this place and now i'm so glad to learn about. The people's smile, their humble living, their skills, their food and music, they are inspiring.
I'm Nigerian and I've seen certain levels of the hard life... But the fact that this people are so independent and happy in the hard life, it really touches me... powerful community.

I am from Lagos!I lives at the neighbouring city to this makoko for 11 years.in my life, untill i left for italy 2016.i usually pass through this makoko with canoe to reach my house every day. It was very tough, but there's always smile😊 in our face. Because we never realise we are poor.
You are eating, helping each other, protecting each other, uplifting each other. You are not poor. Poor people have no resources and no love. This is simply a community that is not materialistic, which is GOOD! Once you are shown greed, materialism, selfishness, you realize the better life was this one....all that is needed is trash removal, little bit of hygiene upgrade. When i got my first house, i wondered why my mother's house never had the inch thick gray dust on the baseboards that mine did...it's cuz she scrubbed them every other week! I never saw that part. So the upkeep of surroundings is just a valuable as the procurement!!
You weren't poor in a happy life, good relationships, a sense of community, and acceptance of each other. You should be proud of where you came from. I would be.

I think our definition of success needs to be based on the good we have done to help our fellow man, and not hurt him. I try to always be nice to others, and smile, and say hi to others. I think the problem is that people in the world today see being nice as a vulnerability, or as trying to compensate for something, or as someone that can be pushed around or taken advantage of. I try to live my life like I believe God wants me to, and to cherish relationships, support people and help others. I want to be that one person who smiled and said something nice to someone who really needed it, even if a hundred don't.

I used to sleep in my Bronco in Los Angeles circa the early 2000s. I met this guy from Nigeria while we were both eating at a Kenyan restaurant (they had this affordable daily buffet) by ourselves. We got to talking and became friends as he was also sleeping in his car. He told me about this place Makoko near where he was from. I couldn’t remember the name until I found this video. Incredible video, I feel like all the stories he told me about this place have come alive while watching this video. Thank you.

Was desert ready so neighbor down the street bought it for their son to drive in the desert (raised shocks in the front and had a winch). Bronco was a 1991 previously owned by Sheriff's department in Southern California.
@@ohmygodfreeusername Yep that’s the truth. I got blocked at the Canadian/US border when I went to renew my work visa. Had some great memories with that truck, lived in it for 3 years in Southern California and went to Baja whenever I could. Was a work horse. Not feeling the new Broncos at all, I feel they look anemic compared to the classic Broncos.

This is so sad and so true. the Government has made it hard for her and others like my cousin to make lots of head way. Especially macoco which should be protected, they want to turn that area to another money making zone of which none of us citizens see the cash flow.

Well it sounds like that's what they want to make it,but without the people. Seems like they are doing everything to make it look bad,so they can have an excuse to tear it down and remove the people. Then they can bring in some rich bloke to buy it and make money off it.

i won't lie as a Nigerian this video has thrown more light to makoko than I have ever known in my whole 17 yrs of living in Lagos. I won't lie Makoko is also very beautiful and culturally blessed, it can actually look like a resort if the waters can be clean or make the houses more modern and it can actually be a tourist center cos u cant find this in anywhere else in Africa
The water is naturally brown so no luck there, the funding required to modernize all the houses is near impossible even for a fully developed nation muchless for a poor one, then clearing the pollution is doable but just isn't worth it when you can just clear up pollution inland where tourists already go

All I can say is, I feel soo humbled. I am Nigerian and I know things could be better but it's the fact that 'suffering and smiling' has become the norm. Looking at the bright side of things, it shows how resilient we are as a people, we thrive in whatever situation we find ourselves in. But still, things can be a lot better.

I Lived in Africa for my first 20 years now I live in a developed country and I came to realize despite the hardships there, Africa is rich of life, but here we are rich of money but poor of life, paying bills and working throughout our lives is all I think now, THOSE PEOPLE ARE STRONG AND HAPPY in some way despite everything

My God the people there have the purest sound when they sing, it's like getting a first hand glimpse of the celebration songs of their ancestors for a moment. This floating village is GOLDEN. Beautiful culture and delicious seafoods. If the government cleaned up the environment, keep the beautiful community there and provide the children education, this floating village will become the BEST major tourist attraction for the country. Also this is the best foods show of all; the video speaks for itself. Thank you Sonny for showing us many hidden gems in the world.

Maybe the people could be a little proactive & clean up their own mess instead of continuing to throw trash into the water and relying on the government to do everything for them & clean up after them. I have been in Lagos for 5 years. I cross that bridge at least twice every month. I see these houses on the water and think to myself, this is a part of Lagos I do not have any business with. The truth is, we are all connected and watching this has given me a better sense of the things we take for granted. I will pay a visit to this community on water, visit their homes, eat and drink with them as my brothers and sisters. Help us make Nigeria better.

I am from Lagos!I lives at the neighbouring city to this makoko for 11 years.in my life, untill i left for italy 2016.i usually pass through this makoko with canoe to reach my house every day. It was very tough, but there's always smile😊 in our face. Because we never realise we are poor.
You are eating, helping each other, protecting each other, uplifting each other. You are not poor. Poor people have no resources and no love. This is simply a community that is not materialistic, which is GOOD! Once you are shown greed, materialism, selfishness, you realize the better life was this one....all that is needed is trash removal, little bit of hygiene upgrade. When i got my first house, i wondered why my mother's house never had the inch thick gray dust on the baseboards that mine did...it's cuz she scrubbed them every other week! I never saw that part. So the upkeep of surroundings is just a valuable as the procurement!!

I think our definition of success needs to be based on the good we have done to help our fellow man, and not hurt him. I try to always be nice to others, and smile, and say hi to others. I think the problem is that people in the world today see being nice as a vulnerability, or as trying to compensate for something, or as someone that can be pushed around or taken advantage of. I try to live my life like I believe God wants me to, and to cherish relationships, support people and help others. I want to be that one person who smiled and said something nice to someone who really needed it, even if a hundred don't.

I used to sleep in my Bronco in Los Angeles circa the early 2000s. I met this guy from Nigeria while we were both eating at a Kenyan restaurant (they had this affordable daily buffet) by ourselves. We got to talking and became friends as he was also sleeping in his car. He told me about this place Makoko near where he was from. I couldn’t remember the name until I found this video. Incredible video, I feel like all the stories he told me about this place have come alive while watching this video. Thank you.

Was desert ready so neighbor down the street bought it for their son to drive in the desert (raised shocks in the front and had a winch). Had some great memories with that truck, lived in it for 3 years in Southern California and went to Baja whenever I could. Was a work horse. Well it sounds like that's what they want to make it,but without the people. Seems like they are doing everything to make it look bad,so they can have an excuse to tear it down and remove the people. Then they can bring in some rich bloke to buy it and make money off it.
Rarely have I seen so many smiling faces, and with such vigor and character. The people of Makoko and their way of life are truly amazing.

i won't lie as a Nigerian this video has thrown more light to makoko than I have ever known in my whole 17 yrs of living in Lagos. I won't lie Makoko is also very beautiful and culturally blessed, it can actually look like a resort if the waters can be clean or make the houses more modern and it can actually be a tourist center cos u cant find this in anywhere else in Africa

The water is naturally brown so no luck there, the funding required to modernize all the houses is near impossible even for a fully developed nation muchless for a poor one, then clearing the pollution is doable but just isn't worth it when you can just clear up pollution inland where tourists already go
