  • Gurglers are a great fly for top water fishing. They are similar to poppers in that they do spit water. But I find them easier to tie, and seem to give an even more incredible action than just simple poppers. They are probably my go to for top water fishing around where I live. And the bass love them. Tied in smaller sizes, they can be great for sunfish as well. And of course they make great saltwater flies for speckled trout and any other fish that hits top water.

    Just got back from fly fishing in Colorado. Wanted to bring that back to Texas for some bass fishing with a fly rod. This would be the perfect fly for that. Thanks for sharing.

      @McFlyAngler It was excellent. That being said, I only landed one. Big difference in bass fishing and trout fishing (with a fly rod). We were sub-surface drifting with an indicator. The whole sight versus feel was difficult.

    Tied up a bunch of gurglers similar to this in multiple colors used them for tarpon and snook they loved them . Best was white with pink spots . I really don’t think that they key in so much on the color but more by the action , the pop , pop and they hammer um . Thanks for sharing

    Keep one of the foam blocks( trimmed) and mark pattern and hook size on it with a marker for next time to use as a pattern to cut foam to make bodies. Excellent tutorial !

    Awesome videos! Very informative! Quick question, I'm not sure if you already have or not, but do you have a video showing the basic equipment you recommend for a beginner fly tier? Any help would be great!! Thanks!

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  2 роки тому

      Thank you! I’ve don’t a few videos here and there but not like an all in one. Of course a vise, I’d recommend getting a good brand, maybe eBay used to save a bit of money. Then a good pair of scissors, good bobbin holder, and depending on the flies you want to tie, that could be all that’s necessary. I have a patreon if your interested in signing up where I can give a bit more one on one help with your questions. Allows me to chat back and fourth with you and such. Bit easier to use than UA-cam. Check it out.

    Stumbled across your channel. Good stuff.
    Big bass fisherman up in MN. I've been unhappy with the inexpensive fly tying equipment out there. Can you recommend a kit for those of us wanting to start this hobby? Much appreciated.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  3 роки тому +2

      Hey thanks. So as for a kit, there is the issue. 90% of the stuff in the kits is junk. I recommend getting a vice off eBay, used, but from a major brand. I use renzetti and love it, but there are many great vice companies out there. As for the materials, pick 2-3 flies you want to start tying, and get the materials needed for those. Learn those flies, then you can move onto other fly patterns. You will find that some of the materials will work for the other patterns, the more you accumulate the less you have to buy with each pattern. If you need help finding the materials needed for a fly, buy your materials from Dooleys Fly Fishing, message the owner and he will be happy to go over all you would need for a specific pattern. Best of all, his materials are all top name brand and he has great prices as well. Use the code McFly at checkout and he will give ya a little discount also.

      Another resource is a fly tying friend or a club who can help you navigate stores, materials, equipment, and fly tying techniques. This is a lifetime passion. I live in Mn, do you want to meet to get you started?

    You might try a rotary cutter to get straighter cuts; I find it much easier then scissors. Fiskars brand comes to mind; Walmart carries them.

      I use a razorblade for cutting my foam but it has to be sharp. I find I can cut through any thickness fairly straight.

  • @ronporreca9574
    @ronporreca9574 3 роки тому

    I have been using a Cricut Maker (think of it as a printer with a knife blade) to cut my foam. You can easily cut to various sizes with amazing accuracy. Once you have your exact shape and size, you can cut hundreds of bodies in a few minutes. Give me a holler if you ever want to learn more about my process.

      Cool! How expensive are those machines?

    • @ronporreca9574
      @ronporreca9574 3 роки тому

      @@McFlyAngler $300-400 depending on sales and what additional accessories you buy. The nice thing is that you do not have to buy multiple cutters in different sizes. You can resize your shape for any size hook. So initial investment is a little high, but saves money in the long run if you tie with foam a lot.

    • @ronporreca9574
      @ronporreca9574 3 роки тому

      @@McFlyAngler agreed that it seems expensive but when you pay $10-20 for one “cookie cutter” or $50 per set, it adds up fast too. With the machine you can cut any shapes or size you want. The machine can also be used to cut many crafty things like cool McFly Angler vinyl decals for cars! Lol
