How’s this for a luxury car head-to-head video!
We’ve got our hands on one of the most luxurious electric cars you can buy in 2021, the Mercedes EQS, and it's going up against one of the most luxurious petrol cars you can buy - the Mercedes S-Class!
The question is, if you’re in the market for a luxurious car, which should you choose? Well starting with the EQS, we’ve got our hands on the entry-level model. As a result, it comes with a single electric motor that drives the rear wheels. Once you get going, it can deliver 330hp & 570Nm of torque. It’s super-heavy though, tipping the scales at 2,480kg!
Then we come to the new S-Class. Powered by a 3-litre straight-six turbo petrol engine under the bonnet, it can put down 435hp and 520Nm of torque. Unlike EQS, however, it comes with all-wheel drive! Not only that, it’s a whole lot lighter, weighing in at 2,065kg.
So the S-Class is clearly ahead in the performance stakes, but how about everything else? Well to find out what we made of the looks, interiors, brakes and everything else in-between, you'll need to stick with Mat for this all-new group test!

The S class design has really grown on me. The EQS still looks very weird though
I think S-Class has nice face.
But shame about the ass.
It’s very difficult to get used to the short bonnet and long cabin.
Love that S-Class look ❤️

EQS front looks a pit like ninth generation Honda Civic :D
When the S class first came out I thought it was ugly but next to the EQS is looking hella fine!
It still doesn’t mean the S Class is not ugly😂
All about perspective. If you put a 4/10 person besides the ugliest person on the planet, the first person will look like a supermodel.
@@balintbesi8603 I don’t think the new s class is below average on looks for an s class. It’s just that we had an amazing design right before this current generation so it’s easy to get disappointed w what followed it (esp before they gave the older generation a facelift that thing looked awesome)
@@balintbesi8603 Actually none of them(yes even the EQS) don't look ugly. Just that the EQS looks weirder and uglier infront of the S-class, and yeah the last gen S-class look too outdated even for it's time.(I'm being honest).
@@johndavidson3424 Maybe it looked outdated but it still looks much better than both of these cars. I am sorry but the EQS is ugly, it's too single shape, like a Tesla, I get why but it looked so much better with the traditional three box saloon shape. It's amazing how breaking up and giving the proportions it's own distinct shape, helps to complete a design.
Personally not a fan of the EQS exterior, the concepts and publicity images looked insane but the production version honestly looks like a used bar of soap
I too was disappointed with the production version after seeing a great concept model

Okay grandpa
I installed the seats on the current generation of the S Class and the EQS. Every ninth car was assembled by me with a clear conscience in Sindelfingen, Germany.

I absolutely love the seats of the S class

Great to see they didn't put a soft limiter in the EQS.😄

EQS THE FUTURE. Gas cars around 100 years of evolution. Just think what EV’s will be like in another 10 years. I own 2 Tesla’s. I charge at home with solar panels. I fly when I travel. Save $400/month on gas and home electricity with panels. . My Model X has 46,000 miles. Never been to service center. Only maintenance were new tires at 30,000 miles.

I just can’t get over how incredibly hideous the exterior of that EQS is. What is going on with the German brand designers?!
It’s a functional design as electric cars don’t need a long bonnet and can have a long cabin instead. But it’s very difficult to get used to the way it looks.
it's the most aerodynamic car in the world so it cant be pretty and aerodynamic at the same time

Very nice informative video and very fun to watch. Just love the British dry humor. Keep it going
Matt: “This S Class has a…”
Me: “6 litre V12…?”
Matt: “3 litre straight six.”
Me: *surprised Pikachu face*
I think it's because both the cars are base variants
It still has a V12 on higher trims with hybrid and EV options too for this luxury sedan, and actually it doesn't matter at all. So I wonder how are you so surprised?
(I hope it's not just because of the sake that you wanted to mention "Pickachu".)
As should be clear to everyone, the future is simply electric. I think it's good that they are making the engines smaller and smaller. That simplifies the switch to electric cars enormously.
Nope, the other engine choice is a 4.0l V8. No more V12s
It's not the Maybach 680 or S600 is it .
It’s a tough choice, but I would still go with the S-Class
Me too, and it isn't a tough choice for me though.
Same, the big reason is the EQS's design... ugly af
EQS by a mile for me
Outside might not be attractive but it‘s interior is waaay better than the pale
S-Class and as a driver you will see the car from the inside 99% of the time anyways
And it has way cooler features and Tech that adds up to the experience
And S-Class Exterior also svcks. It‘s neither prestigious nor elegant, just a long stretched E/C/A Class Sedan
@@howled0 it's not as good, I think due to slope of hood and headlight assembly design, but it may be better in person
@@user-ik2zr1cx1u I mean you pay over 150k for a car and it sucks from the outside. At this price point you shouldn't have to take any compromises. For the interior its the S-Class for me, I'm not a fan of a dash fully out of plastic, compared to wood trims and elegant leather with a screen thats more than enough for everything. I can't watch TV while driving so why do you need it. It's useless to have just the Navigation running on a giant screen, the screens are so big its just a waist of space on them.
41m for stopping at 70-0 mph in a 2.5t car is really impressive

The fact that the EQS interior can make the S class interior looks ‘Outdated’ is simply mind blowing😂
I feel like that eqs is gonna look like the more outdated one in the future cause those bezels r way too thick. The s class looks like it’s at the top of its game in terms of tech (Well almost cause it still does have thicker bezels it just hides them better) while the eqs looks like gen 1 tech (which it is so ig it’s understandable)
Yeah, the EQS has a more futuristic cabin look but looks less luxurious and premium.
I just don't like all these screens.. I think the current A/B (and maybe e class) have perfected interior design
@@FlowKom I’m not against all the screens but i understand what you mean, The W222 S class interior were so perfect that Mercedes is having a hard time trying to outperform their own design.
I think outdated is way better in this case! The EQS is nothing but distracting
I purchased a 2022 EQS 580 about a month ago and it is amazing. When driving it you are ALWAYS relaxed, silent and creamy; it is a pleasure to drive. There is nothing like on pedal driving! When in heavy traffic I always drive in Strong recuperation; I rarely have to hit the brakes unless there is very hard stopping ahead. In lite traffic I put it in Intelligent recuperation. And I do like the looks of it; at first I did not when I was watching all the videos. I look forward to driving it each time and the lighting in the car amazing.

@carwow Mabye compare noise levels with a db measuring meter/tool? Would be interesting to see if there are big differences.
I just ordered a 50 amp 240 Volt outlet to be installed in my garage... The EQS 580 seems like the most logical replacement for my 2017 E43. If I take really extended trip I have a GLS580 to fall back on.
Great video, as always. Why didn’t you compare the real competitor to the EQS 450+ which would be the S 400d? It would be also great to understand which car has the better riding comfort from a suspension perspective as the S500 seemed to have 20 inch or even 21 inch rims compared to the very ballony tires on the EQS.
Would love to see a review of yet another Mercedes v Mercedes ; the GLS v S class, same engine preferably… which one of the two premium Mercedes would be great for day to day living, which one drives better, technology and everything we need to know from the Mercedes Benz stable🤞🏽
The S-Class is and always will be the pinnacle of DBs engineering.
The S class looks like an A class sedan that has eaten too much and the eqs looks like a Honda insight that someone took to a gym

S class has always been ahead in time, I remember once being a 2009 s350d and shocked that it had a night vision camera
1986 S-Coupe had Seatbelt presenter.. Was also shocked to learn that one!
Ahead in time on everything but design
Great car this EQS. I believe it has the executive EV market to its own. The Taycan is not a car to be chauffeured around in and the Model S is in not comparable brand and luxury wise. So the EQS is probably on the top of the ordering lists with the fleet managers for their corporate executives who more and more need to present themselves and the companies they work for as modern, forward thinking and sustainable. So this is basically every large company nowadays. We will see a lot these on the road in the near future for sure.
Yes exactly.
Till Bentley and rolls Royce comes out with their own EVs, this is the king.
Lucid seems to be promising, but they haven't delivered anything yet and nor do they have the brand value of Merc.
This post didn’t age well.
Tesla’s Model S has been on wait list until recently and is setting selling records, while EQS is rusting on dealer lots across the US. 🤷🏻
I did the sums for you on how much energy was used by the two cars....
EQS: 351 megajoules energy for 213 miles....
S450: 1,768 megajoules for 222 miles! That's how efficient an elec motor is (inefficient an ICE is)
And as for CO2 emissions:
EQS: 0 tailpipe but 22.5kg CO2 from electricity consumed (if charged in 2019,will get lower as UK decarbonises).
S450: 124.8 kg CO2 for 222 miles (or already10%of a fair ANNUAL slice of remaining 1.5 deg world budget)
Workings below:
EQS 213 miles (from dash) = 342.8km @28.5 kwh/100km (from dash) = 97.7 kwh consumed for trip, @ 3.6 MJ/kwh = 351 MJ energy reqd to move several tonnes of car 213 miles in the way you've driven it.
1kwh of domestic electricity produced in 2019 on UK grid had an emissions intensity of 0.23kg, so 97.7 kwh @0.23 = 22.5kg Co2.
S450: 222 miles @ 19.4 mpg (per dash) = 11.443 imperial gallons @4.546 L/ga = 52.01L burned (S450 has an 80 L tank so about right if a bit over quarter tank left). 34MJ per L of petrol, so total 1768 MJ energy reqd to shift ICE (cause most of energy wasted through heat out the exhaust). 2.4 kg CO2 per L of petrol, so 124.8 Kg CO2 for 222 miles (or 119 if prorating apples with apples for 213 miles of EQS)
Yes, but the more energy is being used, the more exciting and fun it is generally speaking :)

The S-Class is the old elegant businessman who built himself from humble beginnings. The EQS is his fat son who is modern but tasteless.
Most true describing of both cars))
Abit late, Rory already did a comparison

Probably the most luxurious launches Mat has done i think...♥️
I’d take the EQS also but not because it’s the future. Simply because I don’t have a chauffeur to enjoy the long wheelbase of the S Class. 🕵🏻♂️
Break Test for once and all.
The weight is not always bad, because you get more energy in the ground.
The tires work better the more downforce you have.(spoilers or weight)
So more mass means more energy to slow it down(bad-longer break distance) but also more use of the grip (good - more tire pressure on the surface).
So the question is more about tires, weight, surface and conditions all combined.
If you put 400kg in the S-class it will perform nearly the same as the EQS.
Kinda want the S-class to win 😂😜
In all videos that was like.... Meeen this isn't like an simple thing to judge.
On a loose surface the S-class will perform better and the more grippy the surface the better for the heavier car, until it's to heavy.
So there's a limit to both.
Make a break test with 1 person and then with 5 and it will perform better.
For the most people it seems paradox, but now u maybe know why. 😇
Have a nice day.
Everything perfectly explained but it's brake test not break test
This is the comparison everyone wanted to see!

How much did the EQS charge take to fully charge and how much did the S class cost for a full tank of fuel?
Excellent point!
That's what I was thinking too.?
It depends where you charge it. The cheapest home tariffs are round about 5p per kwh, Teso are installing 400 chargers in their UK stores, and these will be free for anyone who wants to use them. Ikea, LDL and Sainbury's also offer free charging in some of their branches.... Charged at home, something like this Merc EQS could be around £12 for a full charge. Not bad for 400 miles.
At 5p per kwh = between £5-£6. Add 10% for charging losses and you get less than £7. My Tesla Model 3 costs me about £5 for a full charge on the 5p cheap overnight rate.
