It would lose like 100 miles of range if it would do that. The whole point of the design is to be as aerodynamic as possible, even beating Tesla in their own game.
Great car this EQS. I believe it has the executive EV market to its own. The Taycan is not a car to be chauffeured around in and the Model S is in not comparable brand and luxury wise. So the EQS is probably on the top of the ordering lists with the fleet managers for their corporate executives who more and more need to present themselves and the companies they work for as modern, forward thinking and sustainable. So this is basically every large company nowadays. We will see a lot these on the road in the near future for sure.
Yes exactly. Till Bentley and rolls Royce comes out with their own EVs, this is the king. Lucid seems to be promising, but they haven't delivered anything yet and nor do they have the brand value of Merc.
This post didn’t age well. Tesla’s Model S has been on wait list until recently and is setting selling records, while EQS is rusting on dealer lots across the US. 🤷🏻
Would love to see a review of yet another Mercedes v Mercedes ; the GLS v S class, same engine preferably… which one of the two premium Mercedes would be great for day to day living, which one drives better, technology and everything we need to know from the Mercedes Benz stable🤞🏽
I just ordered a 50 amp 240 Volt outlet to be installed in my garage... The EQS 580 seems like the most logical replacement for my 2017 E43. If I take really extended trip I have a GLS580 to fall back on.
@@44Bigs Nah S class will always be around, they will eventually make it electric. S580 is a more comfortable ride than S500 because less engine vibration from the v8 versus v6. E-active body control still gives S class the edge too over EQS. EQS has better infotainment sure but everywhere else the S class wins on the interior especially sound system.
It depends where you charge it. The cheapest home tariffs are round about 5p per kwh, Teso are installing 400 chargers in their UK stores, and these will be free for anyone who wants to use them. Ikea, LDL and Sainbury's also offer free charging in some of their branches.... Charged at home, something like this Merc EQS could be around £12 for a full charge. Not bad for 400 miles.
At 5p per kwh = between £5-£6. Add 10% for charging losses and you get less than £7. My Tesla Model 3 costs me about £5 for a full charge on the 5p cheap overnight rate.
You didn't mention the efficiency!!! The EQS did 28.5kwH/100km, the s-class did 19.5mpg. EQS in mpg (for those used to that measurement) is 78.5 mpg! That is 4x the efficiency!and it weighs 400kg more! Just imagine how it will be in 10 years, roughly when most new MB cars coming out will be electric. Might get to 90+mpge with newer power electronics, motors. And hopefully a bit lighter with better battery tech.
Personally, I think Mercedes will go 100% electric before the next 10 years. Solid state battery technology will considerably reduce both the size and weight of future battery packs, while offering increased range. Should be with us in 4 years or sooner. A reduction in charging times will be a further benefit too.
This is your best video ever I’ve always wanted to see you make more videos of the latest S class so it’s the battle between the patrol S class and the electric S class oh yeah patrol the past versus electric the future

The EQS is supposedly the most aerodynamic car on the market with a coefficient of drag of 0.20! The driver's eye is monitored by a camera and if it senses that you're distracted it will turn off the 3rd screen. The wheels have these little Merc logos on them. The AWD version is much faster. There's a mood mode that like the S class uses scent pods and has a zen mode that uses the ambient lighting to provide a...well...spa mode especially with the massage seats. I would've thought that Merc would've used cameras and radar instead of exterior rearview mirrors. I love the fact that you can get massage seats for all 3 passengers. The boot or trunk is a hatch and the rear seats fold down completely. You can take all 3 of your friends along for a ride and spend 1/2 hour talking about all the gadgets! in the EQS the dial or gauge isn't showing RPM, it shows energy being used. The design of the EQS reminds me of the early 2000's Chrysler Concord...LOL! The AWD EQS with the software update has the same 3D effect gauge cluster as the S Class now. They both have hepa filters that actually filter out every air impurity and ....smell..from outside.
If I wouldn't have to care about long term maintenance, charging, short range etc. I'd probably take the electric version but for driving on my own I'd take a V12 NA petrol S-Class with subtle exhaust mods over any electric.
Excellent review and very thorough. I am a huge fan of the S Class but I am now switching my allegiance! I love the EQS even though the design is not quite perfect but neither is that of this generation of the S Class.
I like both of these models, but I would go for the EQS :). It is more luxurious, looks better (maybe not with those wheels), and should be quite a bit faster :). Great content as usual :). Will you be making a video on the new Dacia Jogger? 😀 (James May would approve 🙂)
As a chauffeur, after seeing how much less room Matt had around him in the rear of the EQS, I consider the S-Class to be more "luxurious". Space is the no 1 thing for luxury, on my list.
It won't work. Cars not designed for being electric from the go have to make some compromises that are hurt the desing. You get a subpar product as compared to something designed to be an electric car from the ground up.
@@zbyszanna they can figure out battery placement. Center tunnel, under back seats and behind seats, take trunk space, under hood, fuel tank space, there are a bunch of locations. look how they designed the battery pack for the new E-Performance GT63, same concept. anyways, i just dont like the EQS design, the tech is great, the ev part is awesome but the design language and interior tech is behind. other than that EVs are great for comfort luxury cars.
@@BIGGELATO You can't simply but a battery and some electric motors in an ICE car, you need to design the car from the start. The E Performance has a tiny 6 kWh battery, even the cheapest EV sold today has a battery more than 9 times bigger
@@Ignacio.Romero depends on the platforms they're based in with manufacturing modifications. Like Audi/VW platforms such as MEB, PPE, etc. Before making the PPE and MEB, they were based on Gas vehicle chassis, then modified to make EVs. You don't need a tunnel for the driveshaft, transmission, exhaust, then gas tank, and many other components. It gives more than enough room for battery packs. For example, some UA-camrs took Tesla motors and batteries and retrofitted them in Gas cars with a bunch of fabrication work. But for manufacturers would are able to make changes with chassis and other engineering aspects, it can be done. Gas S63 AMG along with S63E which could be all electric. Compromises!!
So an EQS with a 15kwh battery, a fuel cell and a high pressure hydrogen tank. Sounds awful. Or pure electric and electric costs of around 1.5 to 2p a mile.

Great video! I would add just one thing in this comparison: the carbon emissions. Assuming the distance is the same for both car, one spend: 342km*0.2 (gCo2/km) = 68kg Co2 released The other 100 (kWh) * 0.25 (Co2 kg/kWh produced) = 25kg Co2 released (and will only improve as the UK phase out fossil fuels). This is the most important metric between these two cars imho. :)
Even if the S-Class had LESS miles left than the EQS, it's still BY FAR the better car for long distances, because of the GINORMOUS advantage it has in refuelling time! Doh!
Thats becoming less significant as development of EVs and chargers continue. The new Kia EV6 can charge over 70% in 18 minutes, basically works out to be for every 3 hours of driving you only need to stop for 20 min, which you should be doing anyway. Plus by the time you've hit a station, plugged in, ran to the loo and grabbed a drink you'll pretty much be there.
@@Stewiedude1 but you have to stop AT A FAST CHARGER every three hours. With a conventional car, I can stop for 5 minutes to refuel, and then go anywhere I like - I don't HAVE to be at a charging station. Of course I agree that things are improving though.
@@gregsullivan7408 absolutely its still not perfect yet but you'll only be charging like this on road trips when you'll be on a major road anyway. Rest of the time you'll charge at home and then its infinitely more convenient and cheaper than going to a fuel station.
@@gregsullivan7408 fair enough in your situation, hopefully other convenient methods will emerge that you can make use of. However 88% of the UK population does have a driveway and suitable access to electricity so the point is valid for almost 9 in 10 people.

I watch this channel when I'm having bad anxiety, it stop in minutes. Matt makes the show fun to watch.
If the EQS had the looks of the S-class, then it would be a real winner!
No
It would lose like 100 miles of range if it would do that. The whole point of the design is to be as aerodynamic as possible, even beating Tesla in their own game.

No its too much in terms of screens too distracting because obviously t b e ekectric driving experience is boring

It is a true milestone, that it is even competitive doing such a test. The EQS raised the game!
I feel like Mercedes made the EQS look unattractive to keep the S class alive.
@@44Bigs aerodynamic s
@@44Bigs Nah S class will always be around, they will eventually make it electric. S580 is a more comfortable ride than S500 because less engine vibration from the v8 versus v6. E-active body control still gives S class the edge too over EQS. EQS has better infotainment sure but everywhere else the S class wins on the interior especially sound system.
How much did the EQS charge take to fully charge and how much did the S class cost for a full tank of fuel?
Excellent point!
That's what I was thinking too.?
I’d take the EQS also but not because it’s the future. Simply because I don’t have a chauffeur to enjoy the long wheelbase of the S Class. 🕵🏻♂️
S class has always been ahead in time, I remember once being a 2009 s350d and shocked that it had a night vision camera

Not really, that's actually what they were hoping for.
Would‘ve made much more sense to compare the EQS 450 to the S350d LWB…
I don’t know I think I prefer petrol, but it’s are to say honestly I would get both and then combined all the positives out of the 2!
Is it me or did Matt say “use your camera’s phone to scan it” 😂

The EQS is way more luxurious, and this is the point/target of this car.
The S Class falls short to the EQS in terms of refinement.
It doesn't have short range what are you talking about
So you would make it illegal and drive on the road what a nice person you are not
Maintenance? The biggest argument for EV probably are the (pretty much non existing) low maintenance costs.
The last NA V12 S class was made 20 years ago.

Excellent review and very thorough. I am a huge fan of the S Class but I am now switching my allegiance! I love the EQS even though the design is not quite perfect but neither is that of this generation of the S Class.
I like the front view of the EQS but not the side view, opposite for the S-Class lol
Faster its not.
@@martinsvensson6884 probably not faster, but maybe the AMG version (if they do one) will be just as quick as the AMG s class

I like this type of comparisons!
Once again, take that EV powertrain from the EQS, put it in the S class, CTRL+ALT+DELETE the EQS... :)
The future S-Class should be a Hydrogen fuel cell powered S-Class giving you the best of both worlds.
Why carry expensive explosive hydrogen around just to convert it into electricity?
So an EQS with a 15kwh battery, a fuel cell and a high pressure hydrogen tank.
Sounds awful.

Unseen but: I would choose every time the real petrol S-class instead of this electric thing.
We think they're both great choices!
Great video! I would add just one thing in this comparison: the carbon emissions.
Assuming the distance is the same for both car, one spend: 342km*0.2 (gCo2/km) = 68kg Co2 released
The other 100 (kWh) * 0.25 (Co2 kg/kWh produced) = 25kg Co2 released (and will only improve as the UK phase out fossil fuels). This is the most important metric between these two cars imho. :)
No one is more dedicated than Matt using his M3 to help make this video.
Yes Matt. Either two tone paint for EQS or swap exteriors
Buy the S-class used three years from now and make sure you buy the extended warranty.
I can't imagine many people would consider buying such a car in 3 years from now..... It'll be virtually worthless 5 years after that.
