I have driven for a living for 35 years & I hate those suction windscreen mounts for all of the obvious reasons. I have even gotten in to vehicles where they have bought the cheapest & nastiest mount/craddle on the market. It eventually falls off & wont suck any more (because it sucks) & then they spin the wheel o fish & silicon it to the dash or console & then when that falls of screw it into the dash or console with self tappers. Destroys dashes, damages devices & usually well before the self tapping screws the cradle mount has fallen of so many times that the cradle mech no longer works anyway. Over the years I have bought Ram mounts, while they are not perfect & hugely expensive, they are decent quality, ( I think there are a few others brands that do more high end mounts also) Of cause their quality & price won't save you if you silicon & screw them into your dash skin. It pays to fix it into the more significant dash substructure. It is worth the extra time & money to "mount" mounts some where other than the wind screen. But like you wrote " ah people do what they do".

@@4WD247 It's always the insidious part of all videos like this. Trick you into thinking it's doable so easily and motivate you so hard that you start trying, then you loose a day on one grippy bolt and realize what a mistake it was xD
Drain plugs are awesome, but there is a catch, hit a mud bog with a litte too much enthusiasm (second low a go go go {classic shawno}) they pop in and so dose the water.
I remember when a mate was respraying his car he held a rubbing down party. He supplied the brews, burgers and tunes, and we made a day of it. Had great fun, and he got lots of help with the prep work. The end result looked really good. It was much more fun than taking ages to do it all himself.
A little tip when pushing soot (and any other rig) around the shed (saw you struggling in the vid a bit). Rather than push it from the front or rear bars, just rotate one of the wheels and it rolls way easier.
Worldwide, the 80 is gaining on its legendary status as the best Cruiser ever made. Saving and improving an 80 like this is not only self-rewarding, but seeing another one saved is magical. Cheers Shauno, REALLY love the build series!! Thank you for sharing all of it.
Make sure you seal all the edges of the dynamat so you can't get water seeping in. It really does help when you can get experts to come to you, unlike what most people can get.

My name is James Soothill. My nickname at school was sooty. I have a 2006 Holden Caprice which I changed out with a brand new Chevy LS3 just before Christmas so this is my version of fitting Sootys engine!
And there we were all thinking the sound deadening was courtesy of the 25mm of mud in the footwells? Lol. Its looking good Shaun, hate to see the bill.
Mate, it is a while ago you did this and a hint for rust prevention if no one has told you. I have a couple of old cars and I they are rust free. Peanut oil is the secret. Atomise it and spray it everywhere. Up chassis rails till a fog comes out. Up in door weep holes and watch the dust wick up the outside for weeks. Get it in everywhere you can. Do it every 12 months and you will have no rust issues. I know it sounds proper weird but it works. Be well Mitch.
Some little final touches: - clear side indicators, LED's - Decent set of lightly smoked front and rear lights LEDs - of course a new set of wheels 🙂. Excited to see sootyV2 on the tracks
Great build. You asked for some suggestions and first thing that came to my mind is rock sliders. Some bar work down low between the front and rear wheel flares will help complete the look and also help you protect the doors and fenders. It would be terrible to see all that work and fresh paint be ruined if you slipped off a rock and crush in a door.
This is great, I love 80s (as I love mine) and seeing one saved is always a bonus. They’re one of the best ever stock off-road vehicles, and when modded, they are the best. However, the rust you found under the rear glass should have been cut out and new metal welded or brazed back in. IMO rust like that cannot be stopped, only stalled, it will be back to haunt you. Otherwise, you should call it ‘Sooty Too’ or some such, ‘cos it ain’t ‘Sooty’. 🤣👍🏻❤️🇷🇴
A couple of length wide reflective tape strongly attached to both sides of the recovery kit bag would be a welcome addition as it would make the rope easier to see in torchlight and could be used as a safety warning to others at night in most low light situations 🤔

If you want sooty to last longer please spray some cavity wax in the body panels especially in the back tail gate window you bogged up. Being a panel beater by trade I’ve see many people go to extreme measure’s to restore there pride and joy and forget to do one important job and that is RUSTPROOF keep up the good work Shaun.👍
A water cooled sealed alternator, Transfer case mounted hand brake, Custom alloy roof rack so a awning can be mounted but it’s not over hanging the side of the car, Rock lights, Reduction gears, Mount a little led light under the bonnet and in the tailgate, Mount the radiator so it’s 2 bolts to remove in 5 mins unlike factory or have enough space so it can be cleaned or a fan shroud that’s easy to remove with out taking the fan off. 👌
jesse, your work is better then the former patrol customs, by far. good to see someone else do it all in a tiny workspace, not a full on workshop in the backyard.

Good call on the reduction gears. Really surprised not many of you Aussies run them. Another thing that helps on old cars is having retrofitted headlights. You can run HID/LED bulbs and minimize using lightbars and other extra lighting. Saves money for other mods.

The dirty 30 and 200 are for touring, but this is a tough track weapon and a swag suits that better imo. 2.5-3" lift, 35s and the reduction gears that you mentioned will make this truck unstoppable. good luck
It’s only a small mod but sooty mk2 needs a set of hardkorr spotties and some aftermarket headlights with leds, one thing I noticed about sooty mk1 was the headlights were very dull and he could never decide on a pair of spotties, with how fresh sooty mk2 will look it’s needs a good set of spotties and headlights 🤙🏻
I don't recommend raptor coating the fender flares because if you bump into something it won't bend or flex anymore, it will just break. Love the show look forward to it every week..cheers from Texas.

Build the camera mounts into the dash so you dont have so many mounts stuck on the windows and so. Also provide power at the mount for those cameras

I love seeing rebuilt and reconditioned blocks on engine stand. There's something about it that just makes you want to rebuild a rig of your own.

Drainplug in the footwell, like the gelendewagen, could be handy. Some water crossings will probably happen...maybe ;)

Hi, I've got a 1995 80 series petrol and love it, I was impressed with the raptor coat on the flares as mine are looking pretty ordinary. Great job and jealous as proverbial. Cheers
