    Disclaimer: ladies and gents, this is a CHAINSAW, working with, building and fiddling with these can KILL YOU, I am not and will not be responsible for improper technique or accidents even remotely relating to this video, please view for entertainment purposes only.
    This video I've been wanting to do for a VERY long time. I have, side by side, 5 different cylinder heads (plus 2 for posterity) that will fit a husky 340,345,350,346xp in various configurations. Eventually I'll have all 5 of these cylinders on saws and compare all of them. Lots of people say OEM 346xp is best, and after looking at these, thats tough to argue with. at $105 shipped, its a nice value. I have a sweetspot for the hyway cylinder, but I also think the other 2 I can get to run relatively equivalent to oem w/ some port work. We'll see! Enjoy the vid!

    Yes the Huztl Big Bore Kit is like the last cylinder you showed include crank bearings, seals, cir-clips, etc, etc. $48 + $10 shipping. Having a blast porting and polishing, and learning a ton before I order my 372 kit. LOL

    I like OEM parts too (who doesn't?) , but OEMs are going to have to get their parts prices a little more in line.
    It's not acceptable that it costs 3/4 the price of a new saw "just" because your compression numbers are down a bit and you want to freshen up the top end.
    If you have to pay someone else to work on your saw, then the numbers don't work at all with OEM parts.
    Saw makers have asked for this Chinese aftermarket parts "problem" by not pricing their parts reasonably. That OEM cylinder probably costs Husqvarna $25 bucks to make. (if that).

      Most underrated comment ever. The chinese stuff, even if it's only 25% of the quality, it doesn't matter. Because it's only 5% of the price. Run some good quality oil and it should last hundreds of hours, which is 10 years for most people. Meaning Husqvarna doesn't make a single dime, out of shear greed.

      @@lazaglider Chainsaws are very satisfying. You can buy one, keep it as a pet project at home, and keep it drained of fuel, and it will last forever, and it's a good investment. They never lose their value. 30 year old saws are worth more now than they cost new in the 1980's. If you ever have a windstorm inn your neighborhood you can go and cut the trees so people can drive through. I have read hundreds of stories of people needing a chainsaw due to a wind storm. So they are good to keep on hand. They look cool, they make nice "display pieces" as a show of strength. Definitely worth owning.

    Btw, use husqvarna piston pin circlips and husqvarna piston rings in your aftermarket cylinder kits and theyll last as long as OEM. Ive put thousands of hours in testing these, as well as hundreds of customers saws. Hyway being the best AM, to farmertec. All the same amount of life as long as you use oem clips and rings. Ive not had many issues with pistons. Lil red barn pistons have issues with vintage mccullochs breaking, but no issues otherwise. So cant really go wrong. Just check ur piston to wall clearance as you would normally. Otherwise no issues.
    Now in a 346xp... if your building it for high rpms ... send it in for an abradable coating. You will love the difference. Costs about 25 bucks to coat them. Worth every bit of it. Your first 4 tanks, run it rich untill that coating is broken in.

    There is absolutely nothing wrong with OEM OPEN PORT Cylinders. They run just fine and will get the job done and that is purpose of the chainsaw.

    Enjoyed! Had my wounded cylinder head in hand (had to cut it top to bottom all the way through to the inner wall on the exhaust port side to free the piston when I was taking the saw apart)... Good reference as I watched. If I can find one, I'll go for the OEM. (Also hoping you'll be able to tell me the size I need by the numbers I sent you on the other video comment section.) Thank you again for sharing your knowledge and experience...! PS> I really miss using this saw - 346xp... It's my favorite of the four I own - Two Huskys and two Echos.

    • @matthewolson8875
      @matthewolson8875  5 років тому

      ok, so no, those numbers don't help. ontop of the cylinder should be a painted number. doesn't matter much anyways though. if this is an original 346xp like the one in the other video, sometimes you have to modify (grind on) the crankcase a little bit to get a new edition 346xp top end to fit. the original 346xp top end was 42mm closed port. the new edition is 44.3mm closed port. this is the one you want to buy. but, a 350/353 top end will also fit... 45mm closed port with transfer covers. ...again, IF you have the original 42mm top end, going to the bigger one does fit just make sure that the piston clears the crankcase at bottom dead center :)

    • @strandymusic
      @strandymusic 5 років тому

      Hummm... #1. From my saw serial number, a sales person on the phone told me my saw built in 2009, "a new edition" he said. (Is that correct? If my saw is "new edition," why is my piston exactly 42mm and not 44.3mm? I did measure mine.) #2. So far I can't find a 44.3mm in OEM... #3. If I buy the 45mm and the piston doesn't clear the crank case, would I grind on the bottom edges of the piston to gain the clearance? #4. I found one parts supply (PartsTree) who carry 7 different OEM cylinder kits for the 346xp, BUT there were no specs telling the size of the piston for any of the kits... Frustration... So I didn't purchase the kit which was based on my serial number AND it ran $151.... Cough! (I'm interested in the very best quality I can get, so I'll pay that if I have to...)

    • @matthewolson8875
      @matthewolson8875  5 років тому

      its 44.3 ... this is the one you want. if you have to clearance the piston a bit thats fine, but if you are tearing the whole thing down it might be easier to clearance the crankcase BEFORE you split the crankcase.

    Hi Matthew. Thanks for the great comparison video of a new Husky 350 cylinder!
    I bought one, but the small intake hole on the OEM goes into the cylinder sleeve. The new Meteor cylinder has the small intake hole outside of the cylinder sleeve and it gets blocked off when I mount it to the crankcase.
    The saw ran for 5 seconds right away, but will not start again. Is this blocked intake hole the problem?
    Thanks much!

    • @matthewolson8875

      yeah thats the 45mm pseudo closed port head. again I don't know of a larger "big bore" head available than that one. its not a bad head at all, I think the 346xp 44.3mm head has a slight advantage on it though

    I spent $320 on an oem cylinder and piston for my 350 and little did I know my air boot from carburetor was leaking and running lean. I bought a big bore kit after that.

      @matthewolson8875  4 роки тому +1

      lots of info on the 350's on my site... make sure you check out my 350 tips and tricks video too. $320 is steep... oem 346xp heads go for 100-110$ usd these days and they are the best upgrade for these heads. ... far as I know there really isn't such a thing as a "big bore" kit for a 350. stock 350's were 45mm pseudo closed port heads, and I think thats the biggest head available, but still not quite as powerful as the oem 346xp 44.3mm closed port head

    Chainsaws dont have have cylinder heads.... theyre just cylinders

  • @captainsledge7554
    @captainsledge7554 4 роки тому

    Also i would not port a hyway cylinder. They chip very easily which is why the plating goes pretty far beyond the walls. However... for a replacement cylinder.... very good cylinder. farmertec is the best for porting so long as youre mapping your port work since their timing is a smidge off. Avoid nikasil, stick to chrome IF YOU CAN. Nikasil isnt very durable. Chrome is. Hyway uses titanikel which is tough, but doesnt adhere as good as chrome. But you dont really have issues with it until you port. Which btw stens uses hyway cylinders now. Theyre still transitioning between huztl and hyway. Some end up cheaper than hyway because stens buys enuff to get them much much cheaper. Majority of the chicom aftermarkets on Ebay are farmertec. Actually there are only 2 Chinese cylinder manufacturers. The one is so small i forgot their name and the other is farmertec. Farmertec is huztle btw... same guys. Anyhow for the price, i like huztle. Just like i said buy oem rings and clips. Almost every Aftermarket cylinder ive had fail... has been due to circlips. All brands of aftermarket have weak clips. I replace rings with oem because even in a broken in aftermarket kit, you have 150 to 170 psi compression. Im not really sure why that is??? But i do know this is fixed with using oem rings or caber rings. Hope this info contributes to the video authors wealth of info in this video.... just DONT CALL IT A DAMN CYLINDER HEAD!!! Hhaha that bugs professionals who hate the old timer terms which are never right. Like calling a chainsaw chain a blade..... killing me 🤣

      Well first off, if you want to buy a saw, why go out and buy one which is not powerful enough for what you want to do with it and then dry and soup it up?
      Top manufacturers spend many thousands on developing the gas flow of their engines so that they are powerful, usable and reliable. It's unlikely that anyone can improve on this state of advancement with a Dremel it their basement.

    • @toast47624
      @toast47624 4 роки тому

      100% agree. I might even go further and say I'd rather buy a Meteor over an OEM. Why? because I port them. The Meteor timing is out in stock form and the transfer tunnels have far too much material in them which gives me plenty to work with. My 352 Meteor absolutely kicks arss. A stock 372 won't touch it! Oh one more thing the NiKasil on the Metor is thick and more durable than the OEM. In fact you need to be careful around the top of exhaust and transfers or you can flake it off like a cheap Chinese chrome liner. I wont port the chines crap its a complete wast of time. they fall apart in just a few hours.
