I love how chill these guys are. Javier's wearing fucking shorts, Tosin looks like he's off on vacation, and Matt looks like he just came in from a game of ultimate frisbee. So metal.
The most hardcore motherfuckers in the world don't wear uniforms. Guy could be wearing a diaper and a top hat and still be kicking the fuck out of most guitarists within a 100 mile radius.
My experience with Musicians Institute was pretty much the exact opposite of most reviews from students/alumni. I struggled heavily when it came to my studies, and found that most teachers and students wanted nothing to do with you if you weren't already at a certain level on your instrument. The people there really know how to make someone feel stupid when someone is inexperienced or trying to learn something new. I felt very discouraged being there, and found it to be a very cliquish and cold environment. Impossible to make friends or any type of connections. I'm currently stuck in non-music related day job and have struggled to get gigs due to the lack of help and guidance I needed. It seems like administrators only want to hear positive stories about graduates who succeed after MI, and have no concern with those who are struggling. Forget about any type of career assistance or job placement; anyone who receives assistance is someone who can make the school look good and attract new students.
Not to be the nerd here but the ratio should be "metalhead look"/"heavy music" since else you'd be dividing by zero Besides considering the one you used you could say he has the highest possible ratio
The sound for this video was not mixed by MI staff, but by Animal As Leaders' own audio technician. The live audio feed was taken directly from the soundboard and used for this video.
Their writing style is so advanced. I can see how some people might not be able to understand their music, as its very metric and hard to follow, but this is part of the beauty of what they do. They say "ya it would be easier to do it that way, but this is more of a challenge; let's do it this way."
I love Tosin's style, he goes out with a pair of penny loafers, kacky pants and a shirt covered in flowers and plays the heaviest Djentiest song ever. Much Respect.
Yeah man! I only have the one CD and it's been a while since I've listened to them but thanks to you tube, i will no doubt be re introducing myself to their over all brilliance! Excellent!
flagmuffin1221 I'm just surprised they didn't record the audio from each instrument separately and adjust the mix after the show for the video. Both guitarists typically go direct into their Axe Effect units, which would make it very easy to mix everything after the fact.
Guys, take the room volume into account. Sound techs mix to the ROOM, not just so it sounds good through the mics. Maybe his cymbals were loud enough without being put very loud through the system. You never know.
everyone commenting on the bad sound obviously wasn't at the gig, this doesn't give it justice. It was way heavier, tighter, pristine live from the 2nd row middle.
People dissing the mix: if you weren't there at the live show, you don't know how it sounded on that system. It's just not intended to be listened at home, like normal pc speakers and shit. I believe AAL's own tech knows how to mix them properly. Peace.
off time signature s are very kool. fusion jazz metal they are pioneers of the style it is all of them that make it work 3 piece bands you have 2 work harder they take it 2 a new level
Yes, the audio mix definitely misses, but whoever is complaining about the band's ability to cover the material live CLEARLY doesn't know the song or the mechanics involved. For the most part, they are SPOT on.
"The sound for this video was not mixed by MI staff, but by Animal As Leaders' own audio technician." Quit trashing the school and read the description.
Everyone talking shit about the mix, but no one actually realized that it sounds like this cause it's MONO! I'd bet your sorry ases that this sounded huge on the P.A.!
damn the drummer is awesome....the other guitar player Reyes is badass as well. what a tight band. even the short technical sloppy moments sounded amazing!!!
The sound engineer would have been mixing for the room, not the recording. Ideally the original stems should have been remixed in post production or used a second desk/engineer to mix for the record. :) The engineer was not bad or dumb, he had his ears focused on the ROOM sound as it's a LIVE gig.
Probably anybody who's heard one too many radio-friendly, cash-grabbing, 4-chord wonders bound within a nice pretty bow. Who gives a right-royal $#!t if its a piece (or song) that makes you think a bit further afield than the major scale, these guys are pioneers of post 2000 music. Btw, am a bass player and love AAS soundscape as is, wouldn't change a thing.
Lots of talk about the mixing but we're missing the bigger picture here: Only Tosin can pull off wearing that shirt! He's like early 90s Victor Wooten and his awesome pants
I love how chill these guys are. Javier's wearing fucking shorts, Tosin looks like he's off on vacation, and Matt looks like he just came in from a game of ultimate frisbee. So metal.
Ultimate Frisbee 🤣😂🤣
It's funny because now they actually dress "more metal", lol.
Just in case someone needs a drum transcription of this song - ua-cam.com/video/wdHTIsCl7pk/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
Its funny how these guys are playing metal but Tosin is dressed as if he was going to play Surfin' USA.
Sign that talent doesnt need 2 dress in black and use tows, but yeap... funny.
I think that's cool. Timeless and boundless outfit.
PaveLowExpert his momma didn't raise no fool
i think his shirt choice is positively mystical
The most hardcore motherfuckers in the world don't wear uniforms. Guy could be wearing a diaper and a top hat and still be kicking the fuck out of most guitarists within a 100 mile radius.
Animals as leaders is the only band who makes a metal concert with sitting people a metal concert
Tosin is a beast. obviously. but that drummer… dude that guy is spot on all the time.
That drummer is just DESTROYING that set, damn!

wow you suck
The drummer here is Matt Garstka, correct? I bet what he's doing would sound unbelievable, if we could hear him.
Just hear the kick and snare haha
He is the best
I could watch this a thousand times and my jaw still falls off every time.
Tosin Abasi has the lowest "Heavy music" / "Metalhead Look" ratio ever.
Not to be the nerd here but the ratio should be "metalhead look"/"heavy music" since else you'd be dividing by zero
Besides considering the one you used you could say he has the highest possible ratio
"since else you'd be dividing by zero", made my day!

Very much diggin' these guys; they're like an off-the-wall version of Meshuggah, if that's even possible....
R.I.P 4/4 signature
Yes indeed, haha
Actually it´s 4/4 most of the time.
Just like the guy above - it's 4/4 most of the time :D
As the guy above said it and he's right .. its 4/4 the whole time -just just have to count in different speeds to 4 🤣
they're perfoming and looking like: "hey we came from a sunbath, but heyy no prob we just can play a lil song for you guys!" :)
I love Tosin's style, he goes out with a pair of penny loafers, kacky pants and a shirt covered in flowers and plays the heaviest Djentiest song ever. Much Respect.
Matt is the most expressive drummer I've ever seen. LOL
have you seen Marco Minnemann?
I've heard of him, but have never seen him.
You must see Marco Minnemann
I can't get over how talented they are
Yeah man! I only have the one CD and it's been a while since I've listened to them but thanks to you tube, i will no doubt be re introducing myself to their over all brilliance! Excellent!
When I attended MI for drumming, (PIT) I enjoyed all the cool guest's MI invited to perform. Thanks for sharing.
my fave song by one of my fave bands at one of my fave schools. awesome.
for all the guys who say the mix is terrible....read the description.
doesn't change the fact that the mix is terrible
wait nvm its terrible but i understand why now
Damn they really wanted to set the record straight right off the bat lol
why dont you skeptics look up the song before listening to the live version. its a masterpiece
Great visual and sound quality and amazing performance as usual.
they are coming from different planet !
those drums. so awesome
wow this music is crushing!! just found a new fav band and guitar player.
I have heard metronomes less tight than these guys
lol this made my night. so insane how perfectly in sync they are the whole time
good practise session with techniques and solo runs
The mix is pretty bad but the performance is fantastic.
Mixing for a room overdubbed on the video. This was not mixed for the video.
flagmuffin1221
I'm just surprised they didn't record the audio from each instrument separately and adjust the mix after the show for the video. Both guitarists typically go direct into their Axe Effect units, which would make it very easy to mix everything after the fact.
***** True, true, I say it's just the audio engineers fault for not thinking of that and just dubbing over the video with the room mix.
+Andrew Southworth What about adding some effects to recreate the acoustics of that room? Just thinking...
Son unos animales tocando! Las pintas caribeñas un puntazo! :)
Innovative smart and fresh. Love it!
Guys, take the room volume into account. Sound techs mix to the ROOM, not just so it sounds good through the mics. Maybe his cymbals were loud enough without being put very loud through the system. You never know.
These guys totally rock!
I love Animals As Leaders, man, they need a bass player.
everyone commenting on the bad sound obviously wasn't at the gig, this doesn't give it justice. It was way heavier, tighter, pristine live from the 2nd row middle.
when Did Steve Erkle get so good at guitar.
Brandon Adams he got so good when they gave him that record deal and blew all of us out of the water
Wil Clark ha! he is amazing. I want to catch him at G3 in cambria.
People dissing the mix: if you weren't there at the live show, you don't know how it sounded on that system. It's just not intended to be listened at home, like normal pc speakers and shit. I believe AAL's own tech knows how to mix them properly. Peace.
ubelievable musicians , matt gartska another level! top
As a student in a recording engineer program, I literally laughed out loud at 2:42. Are you kidding me? XD
That Mars Volta vibe in the middle.
off time signature s are very kool. fusion jazz metal they are pioneers of the style it is all of them that make it work 3 piece bands you have 2 work harder they take it 2 a new level
That's probably the best 8 strings guitar Javier ever owned
Yes, the audio mix definitely misses, but whoever is complaining about the band's ability to cover the material live CLEARLY doesn't know the song or the mechanics involved. For the most part, they are SPOT on.
upload the full show please
cool guys first song my favorite
Sound 8 string Ibanez Iron Label 8-string RGIR28FE / EMG Opus Obscena
Awesome post!
I don't think it's the audio engineer's fault because the direct out from soundboard usually isn't very flattering.
Nevermind, just read an interview saying they use a bass guitar backing track. Damn.
matt allways rocking the wife beater i love it
any one else notice how the axe fx clipping lights keep going off? Why would they not fix that?
Is there any way to buy the whole MI concert video?
they are soooooooo under rated
Sarah Longfield does a cover of this song too, amazing.
"The sound for this video was not mixed by MI staff, but by Animal As Leaders' own audio technician." Quit trashing the school and read the description.
is the bass guitar in a backing track when they play? or no bass?
They have like a cafe tone going on they need peripherys sound guy and misha to revamp the axe fx for them..
5:03 so pleased with himself lol and so he should be!
People apparently don't read descriptions anymore. But then again...Did they ever? ;D
Super band.
One of the coolest and longest videos you've posted! Too bad the mix on the drums is off.
FANTASTISTA,KIITOS!!
amazing
Everyone talking shit about the mix, but no one actually realized that it sounds like this cause it's MONO! I'd bet your sorry ases that this sounded huge on the P.A.!
Matt is a TITAN, makes it look so easy LUL
damn the drummer is awesome....the other guitar player Reyes is badass as well. what a tight band. even the short technical sloppy moments sounded amazing!!!
Just in case someone needs a drum transcription of this song - ua-cam.com/video/wdHTIsCl7pk/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
jazz metal--king krimson would be proud
I love how they don't look stereotypically metal
awesome
Those guys are bada$$
Its sarcastic fun,I completely relate to your comment and you are %100 correct..
I guess I need to go practice
BEST.
where's that drum overhead mix son
Umas músicas q parecem mais exercícios!!!!kkkkk
WHY IS THERE SUCH A MASSIVE NOISE GATE ON THE DRUMS?
The sound engineer would have been mixing for the room, not the recording. Ideally the original stems should have been remixed in post production or used a second desk/engineer to mix for the record. :) The engineer was not bad or dumb, he had his ears focused on the ROOM sound as it's a LIVE gig.
Dude. I’m shitting my pants. So fucking good
please close mic the cymbals next time so i dont have to hear the gate. good song.
i was there!
its live
Tosin Abasi wear 1943's era when WWII it happen..
Just another day at the office

Superband!
Agree, talented the boys!
*or remixed in post production
LIKE DUDE!
Lots of talk about the mixing but we're missing the bigger picture here: Only Tosin can pull off wearing that shirt! He's like early 90s Victor Wooten and his awesome pants
The China sounds brilliant
Heavy Jazz lives..............
It's still a guitar that doesn't provide the same bottom end as a bass. Adding a bass player would only make everything sound better and more full.
nice place i wanna go there T.T
I agree
Absurdo!!!!
I want Tosin's shirt.
Man Tosin looks like freakin' Carlton Banks in this
Haha for sure! He pulls off the Carlton look very well though.
A screaming vocalist? Oh god no...
Dig It !
well said
