Interesting first impressions. Thanks. I think the T7 is by far the better looking bike. Also considering pricetag and reliability, it seems a no brainer.
I agree. I bought a leftover 2018 1290 super adventure R last april and sold in september. I had issues right out of the gate with that bike and KTM did nothing about it, because electronics are not covered under the warranty. The blue tooth didnt work. The keyless ignition kept wigging out and stranding me until it decided to work again. The Display kept freezing. I guess the previous gen of 1290 before they put the new display and stuff on it, may have been a killer bike, but mine wasnt and the fact that KTM wont warranty their own electronics is saying something
I honestly like the ktm praying mantis look but I do also prefer the t700 headlight. As far as the 790 goes I think it would've looked better as a bike with a fairing around the light, just my personal opinion though
Tenere all day Edit: The CP2 engine in this sounds AMAZING with a good can on it. The blue T7 with the Akra system sounds and looks sooo sexy. Perfect bike.
Had my T7 since last Sept, only done 4000 miles so far but absolutely love it, I rode a T7 and 790, on and off road, back to back last July and decided that I'd never be a better rider than the T7 was a bike, and I would be happier seeing the T7 laying in a puddle than the electronics heavy 790 ... which was a good call because it's already been laid down in a few !!
@RidingWithTom Have a look at Adventure Moto Enduro, he has a T7. I went for a ride with him on the weekend and the T7 appears to be pretty good offroad I thought
Not for a second have I ever thought the KTM 790 is pretty. Personally I like the look of the T700 better. Interesting that you thought the 790 was a little rougher. I've ridden the T700 and it wasn't any smoother than my 1190. The 1090r is way smoother..
I have one in Melbourne. Its in the Port Melbourne service department you rode out of!! It's waiting for a new sump. I thought for a second my bike was repaired and you were on it!! Happy to have a swap when mines back on the road.
I rode over a stump/root hidden in some long grass which pushed through the stock bash plate and cracked the sump. Not a reliability issue apart from the stock bash plate being weak as shit.
Great video Tom, I too have a 790 and this video has me thinking all the things you're saying! I still love my 790 but maybe one day I get my hands on one of these bad boys too! Anyways, I just started a Moto channel and I'm looking to make great vids like you once I get some practice. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Tom, great vid. Sounds like you can’t go wrong with either one. Hopefully other brands will take note and make a mid size ADV bike even lighter, cheaper, better.
I rode the Yamaha tenere 1200 and really thought it had no power. It was smooth and got great gas mileage. Better than my FZ09 and R6 even for a 1200 test ride bike it was averaging 45MPG. Thought it was a good bike but was not what I expected. Very smooth though. The auto adjustment for height and weight was cool. I changed height when at a light, told it I had luggage and a passenger and felt the suspension adjusting itself. Crazy tech.
Thanks for the (quick) review... test rode the T7 a few weeks ago and liked it a lot... BUT if I could justify the price I'd be seriously looking at the KTM 790 :-) Bring on the dirt comparo!
I’ve seriously been waiting for this for the last 2 weeks since you let it slip you had a demo ride coming. It sounds like the perfect bike for what I want it to be... a all rounder with no fuss. The only thing I would love on it is cruise control, I hate throttle lock. On the T7 you could do some some serious adventure like the wr250r with just that better engine. Plus you have reliability and wouldn’t worry about dropping it too much. It’s like the mans man of bikes. KTM Is like one of those educated guys that shares his feelings and you know he could have a nervous break down at any moment.
WhosThatGuy haha you have an awesome bike. It’s probably just my jealousy of being conservative guy who can never pull the trigger on a more expensive bike that I constantly hear horror stories about. I’m sure it’s no where near as bad as I think.
I have a wr and was thinking of replacing it with the T7. Hoping 700cc would be a good upgrade being that my 250 is the biggest powered bike i've been on xD.
Thanks for the review Tom. You keep mentioning “Technics” (??). I can’t seem to find them online. Might you provide either a link or their proper name? Thank you,
Here in the USA we are still waiting for the first T7s to show up sometime this June. I had a deposit in one but a KTM 790 AdvR took my money. I’m thinking along the same path as you. If there is one niggle with this bike I’m selling it and getting the T7. Also I couldn’t get into some trails due to the saggy ball sack gas tank on the 790R. I hear you dude. I personally think the 790 is ugly compared to the rally slab style of the T7.
Also I wanted to here your comments as you pulled away from the dealer on the 790 while you slapped that QS through the gears and listened to that sexy exhaust note. BTW do you think the T7 has more flywheel effect over the 790s stalling at lower revs? Waiting to see your take on the off road
Who all still remembers seb and wut he died doing I will say it he died doing wut he loved we can't let his memory be forgotten so easily so I thought I would say something so everybody would remember Friday 14th of August 2015 rip MotoFrogger
The Tenere is an excellent value proposition. The Tenere does most things really well & nothing better than the 790 R from an objective point. This middle weight Adv segment is about off-road capability vs the heavier GS, Africa Twin & the 790 R’s ability off-road in suspension travel, handling, HP, center of weight displacement & ride modes w/ granular subsets, like on the fly TC multi adjust to selectable front & back ABS. If you have the money to burn, the KTM is a great bike but not cheap at all. If you don’t have the $, Yamaha is a great value.
Yea I'd go Yamaha. 5k difference is a lot and gives you a lot of room to make the bike your own. And like many say here, the reliability is probably higher in the Yamaha.
T7 is only 2,500 us dollars cheaper, by the time you upgrade suspension, gas tank capacity, brakes, power, your gonna be over that amount.plus your never gonna get 95 HP out of that motor! I'll keep my 790R and have a little rougher engine, but better everything else, no comparison!
I think this bike is cheap in comparison to some bikes but compared to other Yamahas it’s not that great. This is MT09 tracer GT money. I have a 2014 BMW Sertao and I was looking at the Tenere as a possible upgrade but it’s not even as well specced so it’s a lot of money for admittedly more power. I bought a new MT10 on sale a few months ago cheaper than I can get this for. I think it should be a grand cheaper but they are selling so what do I know.
790R>T700 I understand price is a factor that has to be considered but if it wasn't then you'd most likely choose the KTM 9 times out of 10. Change the oil, keep the air filter clean and she'll last you 100k Tom
@@Nerb1 well I was kinda joking but WP is now selling suspension parts. check out the RokON vlog #81 video on the RokBagorosStuntrider channel, not a dirt bike but same principal.
Even when you spend some money on the T7 to add some of the toys the KTM has it still won't compete with the 790 Adv R as mid-weight adventure bike. The T7 is just a great bike at its price point. Yamaha have done a good job by not actually trying to compete directly with KTM. Now if they did a T7 SP.......
i sat on the T7 once and that already told me its crap. there is so much stuff to break on that bike and the seat is worse than a dirtbike seat because its just as comfy but totally wrong shaped. also its EFI so throttle response is probably gonna be crap like on all EFI bikes i rode so far
I've ridden the T7 and I wouldn't say it's crap but it's waaaayy over priced. And yep seat is crap and EFI is bad. Hard to keep a smooth throttle around slow corners like when you turn from traffic lights. Alot of Yamahas are like it, even my old carby XVS650. My KTM 1190 throttle is much smoother going slow but isn't happy sitting between 50-65kph. Cant win
@@Whos-That-Guy from my experience KTMs had the worst throttle response but ive only ridden the duke 125 and 390 and the 620 LC4 SC which was crap in every way, especially when the carb came out of its seat every time you shut it off and if you didnt know that you could kick it forever, it wouldnt start😂
Yeah obviously nice to throw your leg over but why Yamaha (dealer?) didn’t organise an off road trial is a bit pointless. On my list & was supposed to test ride one today but life messed that up!🤪 Still it does look trick! I did some sums & by the time you add all the accessories, panniers, engine protection, bla bla bla it’s pushing up over $22,000+!!!
wasted my money..... YES you did, sorry. I had to take the cheek pads out of my helmet because after 6 weeks and 3000 k's i still get a big stupid grin on my face every time i ride the thing...
Lol .. Tom was trying hard to bag the T7 it ..& it seemed hard to do. In comparison KTM 790 look’s like they have ‘Donald Trump waistline’s’ with those low fuel tanks .. I’m sure they’re great and all the other things .. it’s just perception.
Funny thing that now the T7 is here KTM have dropped the price of the 690r to 14k AUD ride way and you could probably get it cheaper than that. They didn't have a competitor in the market until now.. Just wish the T7 was 14K
shit'st reviw ever ............ ha ha ha 🤣🤣🤣 you are seriously talking yourself out of owning a 790 the whole vid, yes it need a little suspension work, but with that and all the a accessories you could throw at it, it is still cheaper than a 790, well close to the same, but its a complete get on and ride away bike, where the 790 still needs accessories. 🤔
Interesting first impressions. Thanks. I think the T7 is by far the better looking bike. Also considering pricetag and reliability, it seems a no brainer.
I love KTM bikes, I just can’t trust their reliability, based upon this I’d get the T700 over the 790
There hasn’t been anything wrong with their reliability for about 7 years now.
Yeah, they are quite reliable now. And these bikes come with warranty. I get what you're saying though, a Yamaha does offer a better peace of mind.
I've been bashing my 790AdvR alot offroad and no issues at all so far :)
erk_speed I have a 2014 690 Enduro R and a 2015 1050 Adventure, neither of which have ever given any issues.

Sorry I don’t like the headlights on the the new KTM’s. The Tenere is a better looking bike.
Stephen Rogers totally agree. Wish it weren’t so
Yes,seen outdated..
The new KTMs look like they were designed by some 14 year old who really is into transformers...

Tom, I'm a new owner of the T7! 690 is Sold. Trade up! From CT, USA
