If you can admit that to yourself then you're growing. Confronting mistakes... it's uncomfortable but it'll hopefully make you better equipped to handle anything similar in the future :) good luck with it!
Answering your question... I would say.. not exactly. Yeah, I can notice that the performance is great and emotional. But even knowing how to translate the lyrics to my native language... I imagine that all the deep or intricate meanings get more direct to native speakers. So, in this case, I got to say... I envy you. hahaha
Yebba ("Abbey" backwards) is only 22 when she recorded this. This song was written specifically for this Sofar event, and the performance was so impactful that Ed Sheeran's label signed her immediately, after he said this performance made him cry. She was always very outspoken about mental health awareness and suppor, as it was a constant struggle in her family. A week after this performance, her mother took her own life, so this song has also taken on that second meaning about the struggle with mental health. Yebba goes by that stage name to honor her mom, who used to call her that growing up. Shortly after this performance, Yebba officially released her debut single, "Evergreen". I think you will also love that one, and it will answer some of the questions you had about her here!
@@jvoxfox Here's a little more information about Evergreen, and keep in mind this is anecdotal. It was filmed in the church where her father worked as a preacher. She had not returned to that church after her mother's suicide until she wrote the song and filmed the video there. edit: spelling
7:07 - I have seen one TOO many MY MIND reactions - you ARE the FIRST to TRULY understand the IMPACT of that lyrics - IMO - 'I sure WON'T stay... BUT I'll be DAMNED if I EVER leave...' - CHEERS!
All that vocalization really resembles crying and sobbing. It really is depressing, but I am obsessed with the genuine human emotions she is demonstrating in this song.
I am SO glad that you gave her Jazmine Sullivan comparison along with Adele. Ive watched so many reactions to her video and NOBODY has ever mentioned Jazmine, they immediately go to Adele; and it has made me so sad because she is a heavy influence on Yebbas style. I never thought about Florence but that is a spot on comparison as well. And yes she has a gospel background. She’s inspired by The Clark Sisters and Kim Burrell.
It’s like she’s having it out with the person who broke her heart right then and there - with every moment of falling apart followed by trying to pick herself back up on show. It gets more beautiful every time.
It shook me to my core. The most beautiful, soulful, painful song I have ever heard. Can I say EARGASM?!!! Every time I hear it, my reaction is always😲😲😵😵😭😭😭😭I’m shook.
Her Gospel influence is from the Clark Sisters. You can tell that all her distortions/breaks were intentional and not from being emotionally overwhelmed because of how she instantly came out of character when the song ended. “ That’s that...” 😁
Make no mistake, every modification of the sound coming from this performance was meant to make the audience part of that story. She wrote this song specifically for this performance and took it to a whole other level by using her vocal skills to make everyone in that room part of that story. Hence, why there is only a guitar and not a band that would distract from the telling of the story. She's an absolute genius. And that's that one...
I love how you notice the note not coming together when she sing 'about to lose my' in the high breathy tone. Other people have said it could have been done better but it sounds deliberate and is so fitting to the song and the lyric and emotion that she can't keep it together. Awesome Vid.
I LOVE the comparison to Jazmine, Adele, and Florence bc those 3 artists are entirely authentic and have immense control of their voice. She is not only another unique, talented artist, she is a strong and extremely powerful human. Loved this review!!!
I sure wont stay BUT ill be damned if I ever leave... THIS statement is so powerful. Family dynamics as well as interpersonal relationships all wrapped up in one. This can be true for intimate relationships, for parent/child relationships, sibling relationships... So easy to discount the energy needed to support someone with a mental health disease, especially when society has turned its back on those very people. I am amazed at those who give their souls to support those who drain the very life from their biggest supporters... And who would not function without the support. The saying it takes a village to raise a child has been lost - those who are lost have no village to turn to. Wow. Powerful song, powerful message, beautiful voice. I think I will go cry.
Yebba's phrasing and sound in places remind me of the best portuguese Fado singers. There are passionate latin/mediterranean flavours to her voicing and feeling.
This is probably the most honest reaction I’ve seen. I too am glad you referenced Jazmine Sullivan because a lot of her riffs and runs remind me of her and when she goes into that raspy sound for sure. She has such excellent voice control
I really like this reaction. I appreciate the technicality of your observations, and at the same time your appreciation of the technical imperfections as they lend to the emotion. lot of technical reactions can get lost in technique and miss the intent that can live in the imperfection. Not technically perfect, but masterfully performed. Love it
I'm a new follower to Julia and I have been just going through her library and to be honest I really am not familiar with a lot of the reactions she does however it really has opened up my eyes to so so many great artist. I know this is 2 yrs ago but WOW!
This singer is beyond amazing. You can really FEEL what the song is about, and that is not an easy feeling to create in someone else. This one hurt. I've not been in that situation but....it hurt Not sure why, might be the subject or the feelings getting through through the vocals, but she reminds me of Matt Andersen.
I cried so much... your pauses gave me time to recover... then again... maybe your pauses just prolonged it :) I felt this so hard. Her "cry" vocal the first time HURT me... I felt that so deeply. Incredible emotional performance. I love it when the singer covey's deep emotions... TMI: I just went through a bad split. 10 years of marriage... Went from "we're going to hold hands and feet forever" to I"'m no longer in love with you and can't do this anymore". My soul... her parents finally got to her... they hated me from the beginning and wore her down, and in stepped a narcissistic asshole who "as a friend" sealed the deal... 2 months later... She hates asshole now and is moving in with her father 3,000 miles away... and my SOUL is broken... 12 months ago (Feb 14th 2020) and I'm still broken... not sure I'll ever heal...
Yebba is really something!! you should really check out some of the new stuff all live October sky is amazing as well as her tiny desk concert(specifically stand) Such an interact intelligent vocal would love to see what you think
Based on this video I was looking if she had produced an album. I did not find one yet. This song is also not available on Itune Store. Thanks for the reaction. She really resonated with me.
This is the sound a heart makes when it’s breaking 💔. She is truly an amazing tallent. You should ckeck out Evergreen, Best Part of Me with Ed Sheeran and Gravity with Clarke Beckham.
Yebba led me to you. Looking forward to viewing more of your content. Your reactions to this video (I'm at 2:06 at this point) remind me of myself. She made me cry on first viewing. God, I just love her talent beyond belief. I'm about to press play and see your thoughts about this amazing song. You have a beautiful face but I'm looking to see if you feel the emotion. Thanks for the video!
Please react to Evergreen!! It’s about her mom that passed a few weeks after this amazing piece came out. It’s a beautiful song preformed at her mother’s favorite church.
I always interpreted that line to mean that she will physically leave but he won’t ever be able to forget her, she’ll always haunt him in his heart/mind, he’ll regret what he did because she really loved him…now he’s lost her.
I really really want to see you react to floor Jansen singing romanticide live, she hits one of the most inhuman note I've ever heard any female hit and i really want to see your reaction to it and see you try to explain that note
7:11 spoke to me cause I feel like everytime I show someone this song they are like that doesn’t make sense “I sure won’t stay but I’ll be damned if I ever leave” and I’m like you don’t wanna know 😭😭😭😭
I.m new to your channel and I don.t know if you already did a reaction to Lara.s Fabian ¨Je suis malade¨, but if you didn.t you REALLY have to. And I will tell you why; that performance of Lara made me feel exactly the same like ¨My mind¨ of YEBBA, I mean I don.t think i.ve ever suffered like this but I totally understand this inner pain. More than the quality of their voices, the interpretation is breathtaking.
She grew up singing in the church. And she studied vocal performance, which she says she was flunking out of...wtf?!? Listen to Evergreen and her and Clark Beckham cover Gravity.
I don't know her background but if she says she was flunking out it might have been the other elements of studying music. Music performance degrees aren't JUST performance based. There are plenty of other subjects that can mess with you. Alternatively, if she went to a strict conservative school that didn't have a solid contemporary program her style might have been frowned upon. Music institutions vary like crazy depending on their funding, staff and traditions. It's absolutely crazy so it's a good thing music degrees arent the be all and end all for music careers :) you don't need a piece of paper to say you can sing, you just do it.
I have one cosmic voice (we actualy have a choir named Cosmic voices of Bulgaria) to react to - Petya Paneva on The Bulgarian Voice blind auditions, she won the whole show after that audition
She does not need to leave she can stand with her head held high... That bitch that hurt her can leave! Xxx so beautifully written and sung... Stunning xxx
Listen to her sing “EVERGREEN”. She wrote is for her mother who passed by suicide. And if I’m not mistaken she also wrote “ My Mind” around the same time. One of her inspirational groups that inspire her are the Clarke Sisters(gospel singers)
thats the 5, reaction i see and i must say : no one seems to notice it, of course she has wailing tones, the story and the emotions she puts into it (heartache and anger) say it, what does a lovesick person do, cry, she has the sobs, the sighs, the whimpering, the bitter gasp and the pressed exhalation, transformed into tones of their singing. Or to put it another way "she cries the song in sorrow and anger" and the emotions she puts into it makes it so effective
Is she a pro? Her voice captured me from the beginning and make me imagine Adele. I wonder about her this song. where is she from? Is it her song? I hope to fully understand the lyrics but I can't.
Definitely a pro, just has a laid back aesthetic. It's her song :) she's talking about that feeling of slowly losing your mind when someone you love is betraying you. Hope her emotions were able to carry through!
Let me know if this song did to you what it did to me!
As with any emotional type songs I am a man and I hate to have to face the truth but I've been on the other side and I hate having the face that
If you can admit that to yourself then you're growing. Confronting mistakes... it's uncomfortable but it'll hopefully make you better equipped to handle anything similar in the future :) good luck with it!

Four years later and this is still true! I always describe her voice as a cross between Adele and Jazmine when telling new people.
Yebba singing John Mayer's Gravity with Clark Beckham is also really good. Definitely worth a listen.

I have seen this performance about 100 times. Nope, still haven't managed not to tear up 🤫
I can't believe how she can sob/wail/sing with such raw emotion, then instantly it off at the end of the song. "That's that."
