This react is to NIGHTWISH with Floor Jansen. It is my first time listening to this band and lets just say it had me hooked from the very beginning. The versatility of Floor's vocals is incredible not to mention the atmosphere created by the music! I hope you enjoy this react!

Great reaction! I'm from Brazil and part of this army... I think that 365 days from today you'll already have seen all Floor"s beste zangers performances (emotions and technique in tons), most of wacken songs (I love storytime, song of my self, romanticide and all the others...), Wembley's "the poet and the pendulum" and Tampere's "The greatest show on earth" (it's like a trilogy of epic songs with ghost love score), epica's sancta terra ft. floor (You'll meet simone simons, an angel voice bff of floor, orchestra and chorus on stage too), all songs of new album "human: nature", especially how's the heart acoustic on planet rock (simply impossible to stop listening over and over again) and Shoemaker (Masterpiece, and Floor goes full opera here). Believe me, I already saw this before... It's inevitable... Take time to do a little research on each song, it adds so much to the experience because all of them have layers upon layers of meaning... The poet and the pendulum and the greatest show on earth explanations are mandatory...

I will never ever get tired of watching people experience this song for the first time.

@@NetAndyCz yeah, its amazing how talented the whole band is. So many small details and techniques used by everyone on stage. Even those quitar "screams"at the end 12:55 are really rarely used and fucking hard to do. Can't even remember the term for them.

A good friend of mine that I met online several years ago, told me that he was at the Wacken 2013, but he did not go to the Nightwish-part because he "didnt know much of them". I showed him the video and I swear to god, I heard a soul break.

Yes, as Tuomas has explained it in some interview he basically writes movie scores without a movie.
It's also a pretty good description of most Pink Floyd songs. Can you imagine a Nightwish song with David Gilmour on guitar? The sheer awesomeness of that might cause the spacetime continuum to break and open a portal to another dimension...

Same here. To think this wasn't that long after she joined Night Wish. She was absolutely incredible. When she reacted to this recently, she said she felt like this was her best performance of Ghost Love Score.

Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is an honor for me to give you the short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan:
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. Marco Hietala is the Bassist and vocals .And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrulmentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

Stunning. Floor is a beautiful singer, but she has a wonderful band. This isn't merely next-level vocals, this is next-level heavy metal. Beautifully done, Nightwish.

I found them in November 2020 and haven't heard all of it yet. Each song I hear makes it more clear that these folks are from another plane of reality, one more evolved than ours.
i'm originally from Australia. been based in th UK for the last 21 years and I was at that show in Germany. Stage centre about 30 metres back, and its was nuts.
During the last three minutes of ghost love score there were literally hundreds of people around me, myself included with tears pouring down our faces, not crying as such, just tears because we were witnessing something so very special. Never had a voice impact on me so much.
Floor is just a class act, as well as performing and recording she conducts vocal workshops in the cities they are touring. Vocal workshop in the afternoon, then soundcheck then the show.
Floor Jansen is classically trained, has done the Rock Academy over here in the NL and has worked several years as a vocal coach herself. I've heard her sing in Dutch, English, German, Latin, Spanish and Finnish. I've heard her sing rock, metal, pop, classical aria, country, musical and smooth jazz. I've heard her hold a D6 for 8 seconds and I've heard her do deathgrowls. There are only two types of songs in this world: ones Floor can sing and ones she hasn't tried yet. Please try her (and Henk Poort's) version of Phantom of the Opera.

There is a reason why Floor does what she does, and that is not just her faible for dark leather clothes and bombastic soundtracks. She does what she can and she does it very good. In fact, she knows a lot more than average people. But she is far away from doing everything in perferction and being the female Orpheus.
Versatile? Check every performance of her in Beste Zangers to see versatility :) Her version of Shallow, and phantom of the opera are amazing. Also watch Storytime from the same concert. Actually any song from that concert is great but Storytime is my favorite. Welcome to the world of Nightwish and especially Floor.
Oh totally this. She's amazing in all she sings and it's sweet how her fellow singers are kind of in love with her when she sings their songs.
Her singing Vilja Lied to kick off the show on episode 1 is also worth a listen.

Every single time I watch this video of their concert I always get goosebumps from Floor's singing performance. It never stops being powerful and of course, epic.

I get similar feelings with many pieces by Two Steps from Hell. Do you know about them? They compose epic trailer music, mostly for the movie industry. In recent years they have gathered a significant fanbase outside the industry and has released a whole range of albums, both newly composed tracks and tracks from their back catalog.

I would sooner deface a Rembrandt painting than soil her performance by darkening it with my vocal accompaniment.
Compositionally this is one of the greatest pieces of all time, coupled with one of the greatest live performances in rock history. I've heard the song hundreds of times and I've watched this video many times also, but I'm sitting in the carpark at work, welling up because I'm watching it again through new eyes vicariously. That is power.
Litetally went to their concert on 1st August this year, they played this song and it sounded the same!! High quality band, high quality sound, high quity experience!!!
She's a valkyrie goddess, and when she called out HEY HEY HEY HEY, I would follow her into battle. The 82k people there would as well ;)

Well, she is a powerhouse and can sustain notes for almost half an hour, but she is obviously limited when it comes to flexibility, like coloraturas and lyrical singing. But since she does heavy metal and not baroque operas, that is ok. Every singer has strengths and limits.
She is the kind of singer who putts the most of her work in learning how to be able doing the vocal things which she can't do. We could probably say that there's very little she can't do YET, but she eventually will.

Singing a cappella in an emsemble is a lot more difficult than singing solo or in a choir with instrumental accompaniment. You have to listen to the others and subdue to the overall sound and yet you are the only one singing your voice.
No matter how many times i see this song performed, i get goose bumps. And often cry, not from sadness, but out of the pure joy her voice brings my soul. Well done Nightwish, well done indeed.

You are the first person in the entire world who said Floor's second name correctly :D. She is Dutch.
Yes, Floor has classical background, rock academy behind, and used to be a vocal coach for a number of years. Floor is the most versatile and powerful female singer today and can sing anything from more pop-y style, classic opera, to metal screams and growls. Floor is a queen of singing emotions.
Floor joined Nightwish in the middle of their Imaginaerum world tour in late 2012 (which includes this show from August 2013). Previous singer, Anette Olzon (she's currently in Dark Element) left the band while they were touring, and there was no certainty what to do with all the upcoming shows. They called Floor (her previous band did tour with NW in the past, and they knew each other). Floor flew immediately to help them out and temporarily replace Anette for the rest of the world tour. She arrived two days before the next show, and she had only 48 hours to learn the entire setlist. And she did. For Floor it was first really big gig with Nightwish, 82K people, at the time she was only for a few months with the band. After the world tour (in October 2013), they made Floor their official member. This song was performed at the end of 90min show, at the 1hr 10min mark.
Nightwish formed in '96 in Finland, initially with Tarja (Tar-ya) Turunen as a vocalist. She left the band in 2005, and Anette Olzon stepped in, until 2012.
The bassist with a cool beard is Marco, and he sings some parts too. He has his own solo project outside the Nightwish.
The mastermind behind 99% of lyrics and music is a keyboardist Tuomas.
Guitarist name is Emppu, and the drummer in this show is Jukka (Yukka), but later he was replaced by Kai Hahto because of health issues.
Flutes/uilleann pipes/guitar/vocals - Troy, he did not perform in this song.
Nightwish is better live, always, so if live performance is available, go for it. In their performances, they often using recorded backtrack of a classical orchestra for their songs.
They have very diverse music, from more light songs to epic scores like this, and to really heavy metal stuff.

Absolutely! I miss Jukka back there. Kai is an absolute beast but Jukka brings something extra to the performance that Kai doesn't. Jukka is FUN to WATCH.

@@alexojeda9048 the way I've seen it so far is that Jukka is a showman. He "performs" while drumming. Kai, instead, is a technical drummer. Fast and always on the beat like a metronome, but far less of a showman.

I get what you mean and I agree, but I apologize for being nit-picky... valkyries were not goddess' (SORRY! I'm just a HUUUUUGE Norse Mythology nerd, I can't help myself!), but servants of one God (Odin) and one Goddess (Freyja).. who chose among the slain who'd be worthy to be taken to Asgard. Half went to Valhall (Odin's Great Hall) and the other half to Folkvangr (Freyja's home).
But yes. Floor IS indeed a Goddess! 100%

I have watched this reaction several times, and every time I wish I could give it another like! Kudos Julia, you are one of the best.
This song was over an hour into the concert. She spent alot of time windmilling throughout the first hour and continues to through the rest of the concert. Definitely the best female vocalist of Nightwish.

I truly believe that this is one of the greatest pieces of music written in my lifetime thus far. I would love for Nightwish to release a remastered version of this sung by Floor.
Since this is the version Nightwish have blessed as their official video for this song, and the whole set was being recorded for a DVD release, you have your wish granted.
I'll take a live performance over anything done in the sterility of a studio, and more so for Nightwish than virtually any other band. The exchange of energy and feelings between the band and their fans raises it to a higher plane.

Hmm I don't know. It's so ahrd to pick out the greatest songs of ones lifetime that the majority of the world agrees with. But I would say that would land between songs that Abba, Michael Jackson or Queen did perhaps? But this band is phenomenal still

You are usually my first reactor on songs, and I return from time to time to watch again. Of the multitude I've watched on this song alone, you are the only one to point out my favorite moment ... her, exactly on beat, reaching out to the drummer at the end. There is a beautiful humility in that gesture and after watching several interviews with Floor, it confirms that statement. Being an old drummer, very old drummer, there is absolutely nothing that gives a greater rush or provides such pleasure as creating music with people you care about. She is every bit of that ... they have become a family and they are playful and loving. The fact that you noticed and commented on that really sets you apart and my respect for how you do what you do is enormous. Love you, Julia! Keep doing what you do best! Your incredible beauty radiates from deep within.
I was at that show and I can tell you, it was an evening I will never forget. Floor made me cry, not with this one, but with Nemo... She is so good and Tuomas (keys), who writes 95% of music and lyrics is a genius. You're right, the music touches something inside you. Greets from Germany! It's great you remembered the drummer--The man's stamina to stay in the pocket and pound away with an awesome beat is superhuman.
One does not just watch or listen to Nightwish. One experiences and feels Nightwish. Julia experienced and felt Nightwish through her whole being. That's when you know as a musician you've done a great job, and for a musician like Julia to react in this way??? Game over!!!. I know this vid is over a year old now, your baptism into Nightwish and Floor's work is continuing, but nothing will top your first experience like this one. At the end of the song your body language said it all. Truly a moment of "I can't even..."

I truly believe that! First time I was in love with a dutch singer was with Astrid van der Veen, later Within temptation, now Floor.(Always loved nightwish but floor elevated them to a new level) I'm german and kind of proud to live near the netherlands xD (Also a beautiful cuntry though)
One thing that is often missed is that this song came right near the end after an hour already on stage... this is what they are like TIRED.
Also she, the goddess herself, was sick as a dog and high on pills, and still pulled off what is considered her best live performance of that song!

When you wrote "ringy" it reminded me of Nightwish on their Baltic Princess cruise concert where on some of Floor's belts, she made the steel walls of the ship, ring and echo back. It wasn't an echo effect, it was the walls of the ship.

@@1979Beyond I am very partial to Anette, as Dark Passion Play was my first encounter with Nightwish. :) I came to quickly appreciate the more operatic nature of their earlier work with Tarja as well; at this point it's almost like two different bands that finally became one with Floor being able to switch vocal styles the way she does!

Epic is the right word here. This is as close to total epicness we can get. There's prerecorded symphony orchestra's backing track and the drummer Jukka Nevalainen is responsible of all the timings. I think that's why Floor honored him (and all the other band members who were situated right from her). Floor's husband Hannes van Dahl is a very respected drummer for a Swedish metal band "Sabaton" so she sure knows that the a good drummer is rock singers best friend 😉😄. Excellent analysis. I'm hooked on this reaction. I watched it when it first came out, and I have probably watched it a dozen or so times since. It's my all-time favorite reaction on UA-cam. Thanks to you and the other great reacters like you, I was introduced to this phenomenal group. I'm actually going to see Nightwish live in May. My first rock/metal concert since I saw Jethro Tull live in 1978.

If I remember correctly, this was right at the end of the "hell tour" Nightwish did that involved Floor learning the set list in 48 hours after they got rid of Annette. In a lot of ways, Floor is just as much looking for the approval of the audience at Wacken as she is trying to pump them up. It's also the reason (I suspect) that they did a fair few of the old Nightwish songs that were written for Tarja that Annette couldn't quite sing. I really think Tuomas was showcasing Floor, and throwing some of the harder Nightwish songs at her to say to the fans, "Look, she can sing this. She can sing the same songs Tarja could, maybe with a different interpretation, but just as well."
In a lot of ways, I think this performance was Floor's trial by fire. Could she live up to the standard Tarja, a purely classically trained opera singer, set? I think the answer is absolutely, but she did even more by putting her own, unique, spin on the songs.
As a fellow Aussie, I'm so glad you have discovered Nightwish and Floor. I have found they don't have the profile here that they deserve. One of the world's greatest bands.

Two important things that actually covers all. 1) Being the best live band in whole world..it's like other bands do what they can, Nightwish do what they want. 2) Been living 51 years and never heard better singer than Floor is at least in popular music scene..it's like others sings what they can, Floor sings what she wants.

Well I'm Dutch and almost 50 and I agree :) We are not Nordic, but when it comes to symphonic Metal.. we could be :) Besides Floor Jansen, we have Within Temptation, Epica, Delain, Anneke van Giersebergen and many others :)
I was working in rock business over 30 years, seen thousands concerts and still Floor oscthe best. Don’t get that Within Temptation thing, they are like karaoke band 🤣 Sorry 🙏🏻
@@bocatampere Within Temptation made some bad songs later down the line. Their early work is actually pretty good with Ice Queen, Mother Earth and Jillian.
