I thuroughly enjoyed the Nathan VaporKrar 4L 1.0 and the new 2.0 version is no different. Lots of new elements, from pockets to fitment, the VaporKrar 4L 2.0 is a fun improvement with only a few caveats. What do you think of the new Nathan VaporKrar series? Lemme know in the comments below!

Well-timed review. I was planning to purchase a hydration pack sometime in the next week or so as a self-reward for finishing a 10K and as part of gearing up for half marathon training, and this pack was on the top of my options list!

So, this video is well over a year old, but Nathan Europe has a sale right now.
First things first: this pack is expensive. I'm not sure why the pack is so much more expensive than the competition but it is. I got this at 30% off bringing the price down to €113,- or about $125,- USD. That is a much more realistic price range and at that price the pack offers real value for money.
The sizing Nathan uses is just weird. All my other packs over the years have been Salomon packs. I'm 181cm or 5'11 and 77kg or 170 lbs. I wear M/L in Salomon gear. The Nathan Vaporkrar 2 4L sizing guide shows I'm a size S for that pack. I was really worried that the pack was going to be too small. The sizing guide is true to the advertised sizes though. The S fits me... just. The tiniest tug on the straps tightens the pack down perfectly.
The pack is super-comfortable. It's the most comfortable pack I've ever worn. The material is soft, stretchy and really hugs the upper torso well. The shoulder bands are a little wider apart than most other packs which is fantastic. In many other brands I've tried the shoulder straps the bands rub against the neck eventually. The Vaporkrar has no such issues. The only mildly uncomfortable issue were the straws that bounce and make a tapping sound. It got used to that quickly but it was noticeable at first. I wore the pack in 23C (74F) and it didn't feel especially warm to me.
No brand beats Salomon in storage. The Vaporkrar doesn't either, but it tries admirably. The front pockets could've been a little higher. They don't quite fit my SIS Sports gels. I personally can't store my phone on the zippered pocket under the soft flask. It just rubs and annoys there. The storage space around the side and along the pack is great though. Super easy, reasonably large and I can reach everything in there without having to resort to a contortionist act. The zippered pack on the back isn't accessible to me on the run, but I'd only store things there I don't need accessible right away like a first aid pack or some extra clothing.
I'm very pleased with the pack. It's comfortable and carries everything I need for shorter days out. Pretty damn nice.

I have a two part question. I see you made it a point to mention the heat retention in this 2.0 version. Is there a huge difference in heat retention between the Vaporkrar 2.0 and 1.0? Also, would those new soft flasks fit well in the 1.0 version? I live in florida so heat retention might be a deal breaker, and if those flasks fit in the 1.0 i might just go with the original version

Im excited about the larger bottles. the 1.0 bottle sizes were a joke. I also find myself cinching up my 1.0 about how much you described cinching the medium and being a small guy, when someone says to buy a size smaller because they run big, it's not always that easy as not every brand makes XS, especially when it comes to packs :(

i was looking for a review of the 12L so i am glad i found your review. question i should be a medium according to their instructions but i am worried about the size being to big. i am literally a 99cm chest size and it says it should a medium but i am afraid that i am right at the edge.

  • @inkjob12
    @inkjob12 5 років тому +2

My problem with almost all the vest I have tried...is sizing. For some reason vest manufactures think that an XL is a 44 in. chest....NOT ! trying to find a vest for a larger sized (chest) is very difficult. I tend to wear a vest with side straps instead of the wrap around. That way, if I need to, can customize the side straps so that they are a little longer. Come winter time when I may be wearing thicker clothing and maybe a jacket, I need a larger vest, Im trying the North Face right now,,,its larger size is 48 in. chest....perfect....but come winter time it still may be to tight for bulkier clothing. Maybe this Nathen, since you say its running larger, may work...??? Come on vest makers...not everyone is a 125 lb. beanpole. Some of us are trying to lose the weight, but give us a vest we can start in to work our way there,

  • @lokie1964

I rinse my pack off after every run. I don’t wash it with the technical soap but just rinse in the sink in cool water. I’m not sure what others do but it would seem weird to just let the pack air dry after a run. Mine is always soaked with sweat! Curious to know how others manage the pack post-run!

If you need to carry poles then Salomon is the way to go I think. The 2019 version of the 5 and 12 l vests now have the attachment loops for the Quiver as well as elastic bands that can be repositioned to carry poles in multiple ways (horizontal in the back or vertical next to the bottles).

  • @Retread268

Late to the comments party. I find there aren't any hydration vest for 48inch or 120 cm and up chest. Sporting an older 7l Nathan vapor air vest. Just put new straps on so I can breath. Solomon unfortunately doesn't fit a clydesdale. Old guy just doing miles to stave off death, but I still lift. Like to carry gear in the cold else, take an injury and you freeze fast walking out. Anyone know of vest for bigger guys, would be great to hear. Ultra direction mountain 12 l 5.0 did not fit, no useful phone pocket either.. Solomon was a no go.

What is the bottle lid attachment like for the 4L straw bottles? In the 1.0 version it was very annoying at times to get a good seal, have they resolved that with the new 2.0 version bottles?

Nathan always has such loud letter branding on their products. Many of the other companies (like Ultimate Direction) also overdo the branding. I understand that they want people to know who created the vest but I hate walking around looking like an advertising billboard. How about reviewing the new Raidlight Revolutiv 12L vest? I never heard of this company until recently (on UK channel Wild Ginger Running) and I just got this vest - really like it so far.
