    I LOVE reviewing hydration packs. It's always a piece of my kit that I take a lot of time to test and figure out. In this case, the Salomon S/LAB Sense Ultra 5 Set has been available for sometime, but I needed to make sure it works in a variety of situations. I love it. It has it's fair share of problems, but overall, I've been super happy with it. I'm really curious to try the new Advanced Skin 5L pack from Salomon, as that might be a better option for a larger variety of situations for the same price. Stay tuned for that review.

    Put a lot of time in with this pack and have been very pleased. Excited to see what else is out there, but for now, this is what I'm grabbing for long days and races. What's your current go-to and why?

      I've got the old version and found the straps unhook too often so the cord locks are a much needed improvement. I'm still not a fan of the nearly-open strap pocket though... not many things I'd trust to keep in it for fear of falling out! I've also got the updated (and hard to find!) S-LAB Sense Ultra Set 3L which also has the updated Cord Locks. I still love that pack for more minimal scenarios such as races, and I wish all Salomon packs had it's huge side zipper pockets! Finally, my favourite Salomon pack currently is the update ADV Skin 12 SET. IMHO it's a huge update over the previous version and just refined in almost every way - love it's fit, and great storage options. Have you tried it?

      Ethan, for me, the top cable keeps popping loose when I double it, so that its tight. It pops off the hook, which seems a little shallow. Mine doesn't have the plastic squeeze clips (whatever you'd call) to tighten or adjust. Have you or anyone else experienced the problem and do you have any solutions. You da man. Thanks.

    I have the 8L and an Advanced Skin 12.
    I think the design and detailing of the Sense Ultra 8 is amazing. It really truly is more like a garment.
    What I like about the Advanced Skin 12 though is that it is still amazingly detailed (if slightly less minimal) but doesn't bounce nearly as much or at all. The front drop (below the bottle) pockets for example have way less bounce but still swallow up a lot of food or gear.
    It's like it is a combination of the old Salomon vests and the Sense Ultra of sorts, and in the end I find myself often taking the Advanced Skin 12 especially when I have a lot of food or a lot of gear to carry.

    Absolutely love my Sense Ultra 5 set. Purchased it last year when it first came out and it's still my go to pack. To last on the long runs I carry extra flask(s) in the back.
    I have had some tearing on the inner webbing on back but still going strong. Just get the right size.

    Thank you, Ethan!
    I love the 5 and the 2! Your review is "spot-on", and fortunately as a "minimalist" I have yet to carry enough for the "bouncing" effect, but would find that annoying. The material is soft enough to wear even without a shirt underneath, but I have yet to do so at 9300-14,000 feet elevation...too cold! 😀👍

    Nice hat! Love the feel of the S-lab, but you’re right, super stretchy. Besides the recall on the vaporkrar bottles. It’s a nice mix of stretch but has those side straps that lock it in tight!

    I ran with UD packs for years - just never getting the Salomon bug! Probably because I don’t like the fit of their shoes. That said, I bought the 8L s-lab pack last year and have not looked back. It carries all the required UTMB kit and, as you said, the pockets are all reachable without removing the pack. I love it. Also totally agree about the bounce. I tend to only run with a single 500ml soft flask, so pack the vest accordingly to balance the weight.
    Great review 🤙🏼

    I do ultra solos and I use the adv skin 5 set. I find that it has everything I need. The 12 set bounces too much. I don't use the sense series because on most of my runs, they get every adventurous, no aid stations, etc; otherwise I'd just use a belt like the UD groove stereo that can hold my UD ultra jacket or the zippered flip belt if the run is more tame or its just a regular training day. I've had this set up for years now, love it. I browse stores often for gear, have yet to find anything that beats this for my needs.

    Great review, Ethan. I use the Advanced Skin 5 Set for runs that require more hydration (accommodates a bladder) and the UD T.O. 3.0 race vest for when I need to carry fuel and fluids but can refill. Love them both.
    I use the S-lab bottles in my advanced Skin pack because they are better (wider mouth and hard bottom) but I do still struggle getting them back in the pockets. I recently got straws for the bottles but have yet to try them.
    Yes the Salomon packs are expensive but are super functional, feel great and they will last a long time. Still happy with my T.O. 3.0, and I use it the most, but when it meets its demise, I’ll likely replace with a Salomon.

  • @03bruisercat
    @03bruisercat 6 років тому

    Have used this pack for a while; got it b4 it came out to the public; and love it. I agree with the bounce comment due to the stretching of the front pockets. For that reason, I tend to put lighter but voluminous items (hat and gloves, arm warmers etc.) in the front pockets, and put nutrition, electronics etc. on the sides. One item GR did not mention is that the pack has elastic loops to put around the soft flask caps to keep them from sliding down into the pockets. Thus you are not fishing the floppy bottles out of the pocket like the older versions. In fact, you don't even need to remove the bottles to drink. I have added extender tubing to the lids to make that even easier. I do think sizing is critical on this pack. Because it stretches so much, if you get one that is too large, you may not be able to tighten it enough.

    This is my first vest and I love it. Everything I need gets snog easily.
    The only issue that I have it's with the weight distribution if you don't manage that it will get bouncy easily.
    Overall it's a good vest except the price tag. Here in Canada it's close to $200.

  • @johnusher3283

    I really this pack, and use it at least once a week. The pack material is really breathable and while it can heat up a little on a hot day, it is nowhere near as hot and sweaty as a hydration backpack. I also prefer the weight of the water to be at the front. I have never had enough stuff in the pockets for them to bounce but of course the water bottles bounce when they are full. Soft flasks are great for the way they conform to your body once they are starting to empty and having two means water in one and tailwind in the other. Overall very happy although sometimes i wish i could fit a bladder in there too.

    I've not yet found a pack that I like - always feel my breathing is constricted wearing them. But I've been using the new Ultraspire Fitted waist belt and love it. It holds a ton of stuff including 500 ml soft flask, phone, nutrition, gear. I don't notice it after a mile or so. Only negative is the bungee cords are not strong enough to hold z poles without slipping/sagging

    Would you say it's more "bouncy" than their older packs?
    One comment about value in reviews would be considering price vs longevity. I initially balked at the high price of Salomon vests. Then I got the Advance Skin Lab Hydro 12 Set - another catchy bit of branding ;-) - and 3 years of seriously heavy use later I've had no need to spend further on race vests. It's done daily commutes, races, big mountain days and now feels like it was a pretty savvy investment. I keep noping out of other brand's packs as soon as I try them on in my local running store despite much more competitive pricing. I'm now in the market for a more minimal pack for well supported, minimal mandatory kit races and I think I'd be happy with this price if it works as well as my current Salomon vest.
    Big fan of your channel, it's such a good watch even for products I've no interest in and absolutely essential when I'm in gear-buying mode!

    This video showed up on my timeline and really want this vest now. It’s on sale in the UK for £67 which looks a bargain!

    Those new soft flasks with the hard bottoms left my lower ribs really sore from them bouncing up and down. I’ve switched back to the old fully soft flasks even though they are more fiddlly to put in the pockets and fill; they’re basically invisible even when full!

    Spot on about the fit. I started in a medium, which fit perfect, but quickly discovered the stretchy material requires a tighter fit. Swapped to small which I’ll be trying in the issaquah alps tomorrow. 🤞🏼Overall I love how it feels and how accessible everything is. That price though...

    I'm a bigger guy and I am a fan of Ultimate Direction packs, because they fit me very good (haven't tried any of the packs they released). I'm still not a fan of the soft bottles, tried them a few times, but still tend to go to the 600ml hard bottles that were included with the Jurek FKT pack. I have tried packs from other brands in the past, but haven't tried any salomon packs (price being one of the reasons).

    I own both the 2 and the 8 and love them for comfort. The 8 Sense has an improved chest strap system but the 2 still works. The 2 is better for me in the summer due to the airy open mesh on the back, as opposed to the back being covered (thus hot) on the 8. For both packs, I find the left side breast pocket useless...nothing stays in there and I am not flexible enough to reach rear pockets. Speaking of the rear pockets, the lower one on my 2 Sense has lost its elasticity. All that being said, I'm still a big fan.

    Black Friday I got mine for $109 in jam-jam blue. Used it as my approach pack on Mt Whitney. When it's loaded heavy the bounch does bruse my ribs. It looks like I'm wearing a blue bra in my trail running pics. Im afraid my Trekking poles with a carbide tip might tear it, so I wrap the poles around my waist. But it's a great pack!

    I see this one more of a higher capacity Sense Set rather than an upgrade to the previous Adv Skin 5 Set. In fact, they kept both models now.
    I have both, and even though I like the new model, I still end up going to the old one if I'm really gonna load it up because of the bouncing. The Adv Skin Set is heavier, but much more rigid while still comfortable. Also, you could overflow some of the rear pockets or add an elastic band and have even more capacity. The new one is the ultra light. Great, but somewhat different purposes IMO.

    • @TheGingerRunner

      Safari87 it’s ridiculously light. That means the materials are super thin and airy. The later that touches the skin is super light mesh and the outer layer is super thin and stretchy. Its WAY better than other brand’s equivalents.

      I had some issues with heat with the 5 set. If you think of how much surface area on your back there is, it’s a big deal for heat retention/dissipation. The 2 set is great for hot running.and has enough storage for most situations.

    I have this exact pack. I love it, but had the same issues as you with it. My only additional gripe was actually with soft flasks. My pack, also in a medium, is very comfortable on my training runs, and holds everything I need it to. I'm planning to use it next weekend for my first ultra. I don't believe you mentioned it in this video, but mine has the side-opening pocket on the left shoulder (behind the S-Lab wording). I know that you discussed that on another review (I think for last year's 8L version). I'm not sure if I'll use that pocket for anything, for fear of it falling out.

      You can buy cord locks on the cheap from many spots, even Amazon. I retrofitted my 8L with them

      I hadn't thought about that, but after your message that's what I ended up doing: ordering a pack from Amazon. I retrofitted mine and it worked well during my first ultra yesterday.

    I've got the 8 liter version and I've got roughly 300 miles in it. The stitching on the front right pocket has completely come undone so as of right now i'm looking at about a 3" hole that needs to be sewed up. There is glued rubber stripping on the top of the rear large kangaroo pouch that is just about to totally rip off so the build quality at least on the pack I have is atrocious. To top it off this pack fit great for maybe two 20+ mile runs and then it turned from a large to an extra large. I tried the medium which was pretty tight and decided on the large but looking back that was a mistake. Like Ethan says due to the material this pack will get larger. I'd pass on everything saloman based on my experience with this pack save for the fact that I truly love the soft flask setup. I'm currently pondering an advance skin 5 liter but there is a voice in the back of my head that says I'm an idiot for wanting to even try another pack from this company.
    Edit: (15 Minutes later) Forgot to mention the strap system sucks.

    Did Salomon do anything about the weird side-open upper chest pocket on the left side? I don't trust putting anything in it, but I don't get hung up on the fact that I can't (or won't) use it. Glad to see they replaced those tab locks on the bungee cords. It's the only thing I truly dislike about the first gen Ultra Sense 8 that I have.

      I added some stitches at the bottom - making the opening a bit smaller. Then almost anything remains in the pocket, including gels, tissues or salt tabs. Still wouldn't put keys in there though!

    Can't find the original comment thread I was in on this but I wanted to come back after my last long race and take back some of what I said. So previously I'm complained of bruised bottom ribs from the bottles towards the end of Highland Fling 53 miler a month ago. What I didn't say was I was still using the flasks with square soft bottles and narrow top, mainly because I was worried the rounded shoulders of the wider bottles would rub my chest. I just ran Maxi-Race in Annecy, 116km race, and for that I went with the flasks with the hard bottoms and wide tops. Why oh why didn't I do this before? 1) They drop into the pockets much easier. 2) Because of the neck holder the bottles stay up in a spot they don't seem to rub. 3) Wide tops is a revelation for this Tailwind user. 4) If you don't pack the front kangaroo pouches with heavy stuff (limit it to gloves, buffs, headphones, a couple of gels) then it won't press against the bottle and you get much less bounce up front. 24 hours in the vest (it's a monster of a course) and I I really had very little discomfort, just a little in the side pockets late on - but I think this is to be expected. My only remaining complaint is the chest pocket without the zip - it's good for little more than stashing the whistle. Otherwise, I expect I'll be using this vest till it dies a death.

    Used this race for one 100k ultra and then sold it on e-bay. The problem I had is the water bottles bounced and were bruising my ribs. Got to be be very painful after 40 miles so I started carrying one bottle and giving at least one side of my ribs a break. Perhaps I got the wrong size, not sure.

    • @scottsland99
      @scottsland99 6 років тому +1

      I have the exact same issue with my 8L version. I ran Highland Fling last weekend and by the end of the race I was moving the vest to side just for a bit of rib relief. That plus the bouncing has me looking back at the 2018 version of the Adv Skin 5 Set. Still a classic vest with some really nice updates. Need to do some eBaying because I now have far too many vests kicking about.

    • @monumentcakes4377
      @monumentcakes4377 6 років тому +1

      Adv Skin 5 Set is a much more versatile and dialed in pack IMO. Not much heavier but fits much better all around and can carry a bladder if need be, plus you can stash a 20 oz flask in kangaroo pocket and it doesn't move, and no bounce in front flasks. I even use raidlight 20 oz straw flasks in the front, but takes a bit to getthem in there

    • @TheGingerRunner
      @TheGingerRunner  6 років тому +1

      Bottles or flasks? I definitely don’t recommend bottles with these packs as they’ll sink down and there really isn’t a lot of protection between bottle and ribs. I have zero issues with the softflasks here. If you need more liquid, you can carry two upfront and a few in the back and shrink them down as you work through them, if that makes sense.

    • @scottsland99
      @scottsland99 6 років тому

      Soft flasks for me, I've never understood hard bottles in any vest personally. I'm sure it depends on fit, where the bottom of the flasks sit relative to your bottom rib. That and whether you've additional items riding upfront and whether they're bouncing. I've carried a full bottle in the kangaroo pouch at back of my old Adv Skin 12 Set before - I loved that pack, just wish they'd adopt the S, M, L sizing of these Sense packs instead of XS/S, M/L.

    • @BruceJackson-SEOCoach
      @BruceJackson-SEOCoach 5 років тому

      If the front kangaroo pockets are overfilled I find the hard plastic at bottom of bottles causes issues - but only when the flasks are also full. Once I start drinking the rib pressure reduces.
      Another thread mentioned adding more weight in back pocket. This raises the front pockets so the bottles don't press on your ribs so much. Is still by far the best vest I've found!

    • @rickt.4118

      The “5 liter” designation refers to the overall storage capacity of the vest and has nothing to do with the amount of liquid storage. Hope this helps.

    I'm guessing you won't be reviewing the new $179 Raidlight Gilet Responsiv 10L then.... "epic fail" on price and equally annoying name. But it is getting rave reviews for the same reasons you like the Salomon pack. Ultra, ultra light. And if I win the giveaway on Runner's World at the end of the month, I'll be wearing one. It would be nice to know that it has the Ginger Runner stamp of approval. Otherwise, it would be very embarrassing to get caught wearing the most expensive hydration vest in the solar system. Of course, I could weasel out of the shame with "Hey! I won this thing! It's the best free vest I ever owned!"

    Ginger, you’re cutting off most of your torso the ENTIRE time which is obviously impossible to see any of the features of the product you’re trying to show. Move your camera around to really show off the product you’re talking about and reviewing. Otherwise it’s just a talking head that we could just listen to the audio of. 👊
