    I think it's about time I reviewed a product from Nathan! They have been manufacturing hydration packs for a number of years now and I know many people that swear by their comfort and durability. After getting a number of products from them, I put the VaporAir through the gauntlet and really enjoyed what I experienced.
    First of all, STRETCHY STRAPS! This is one of the ONLY packs I've reviewed other than the Salomon packs that utilizes chest and sternum straps with elastic properties. Seriously, how do more companies NOT USE THIS?! Love them. There are also a TON of awesome pockets that are easily accessible and stretchy to accommodate tons of gear/nutrition/electronics/etc.
    Really the major issues are with sizing (I just couldn't get the S/M or L/XL to fit me properly), and some mall details with attachments and straps. The pole straps not working with most poles and some of the loose adjustment straps being located right along the neck/ear/head area is annoying. Other than that, the Vapor Air is a solid, more minimal vest from Nathan worth checking out. (it also COMES with a 2L bladder and 2 small bottles - pretty nice perk!).

    A good suggestion for slapping straps that I learned from a friend in the military was that after finding the right fit for the pack then folding the straps to about a few centimeters and the using electrical tape around the folded part. That way there is less loose straps that slap and flop around and when you want you can always remove the tape and adjust the straps as you wish. Yes it may sound like a hassle but it only takes a few minutes and you're good

    Would love to see a Shadow VS Airess review.
    Thank you for taking the time to do these. Your camel back Marathoner review solidified my feeling those weren't the right ones for me. No stores carry these nearby so reviews really help.

    I run with this and I've had the same issues with chaffing on the neck and flappy flaps (somewhat minimised now with some strategic tying and hooking). Probably due to me having the s/m size quite tight like you. Feels like it needs some real fiddling/customisation to get it comfortable.
    But it's served me well on my long runs, holds plenty of Clif Bars, bloks and gels, occasionally a jacket for weather changes, plus a bathroom kit!
    Awesome beard and keep up the great work, loving Canterbury!

    I'm a fan of Nathan products. Been running with the Intensity for over a year and I really like their hand-held bottles as well. I am impressed with all the pockets on this, but would definitely need to have adjustable sides. Nice review as always!

    Love the face Ethan makes when talking about his "bathroom kit"! I have a "bathroom kit" that I keep stashed in my Ultimate Direction AK vest. I'm sure we all have these kits. Love running, running is a big part of my life, but those darn unexpected, uncontrollable washroom breaks sure can be a bummer at times, (pun intended) that's for sure.

    There are little rings on the trekking pole hooks to hook on when you are not using them. This allows them to not flop around whenever you are running. I usually just run the straps from the shoulder straps under the loops on the shoulder and this usually helps them from flopping around. Sizing was a huge issue for me as well. I have a S/M now and was almost considering getting the XS if it wasn't for the neck issue. I had that as well but I just put on some body glide on my neck and I'm good to go. Thanks for the review!!! Keep up the awesome material!!

    Great review! I've used mine for 2 years now for 50M and 100Ks and love it. Nice tip on putting a bottle in the vertical pocket - never thought of that! Esp perfect if one goes empty a few miles before an A/S. thx!

    I have the airress. Love it. I have one other smaller Nathan pack and this one is almost the same weight. I agree, if you could cinch the sides that would be better. I have the telescoping poles to the pole straps worked ok for me. I'm not the smallest framed lady out there and I wear the sm/med. I've heard some tiny ladies complain about the sizing as well. If you aren't tiny and have telescoping poles, it's a pretty good pack though. I thought I might get sweaty back with the materials, but it feels pretty light and breathable for at least 50 miles.

    I've been using the vapor air for about 8 or 9 months. It's the only hydration pack I've used, so I don't know how it compares. I mostly bought it because it was really light, but I can fit everything I need for a long run. I don't care too much for really poppy colors, so I thought the looks were pretty cool. My only real issue is with the sizing, but not to the point where I chaffe. When I first bought the pack it had a defective mouthpiece, but they sent me a new one right away, so good customer service.

    Slappy straps! I haven't tried any of these newer packs from Nathan, but that's what scares me about them. I see images/video of people running in them and all I see are straps! Slappy straps bouncing around everywhere! Another great review, Ethan.

    I contemplated getting one of those Zephyr flashlights last year but they're like $50. Ended up getting a super bright no-name led flash light off ebay for like $12. Granted doesn't have the cool angled thing going for it. But it gets the job done for those fall night runs.

  • @rustyshackleford9498
    @rustyshackleford9498 8 років тому

    The vapor air is my first running pack. I love it! However, I have some of the same problems with it. I have to roll the excess on the chest straps to prevent them from slapping and I use the hooks on the straps on the upper back to stop them from bouncing.
    The main strap I have to tighten almost as much as possible or it begins to bounce as the bladder empties. I tuck the excess on that into the pouch with the bladder.
    My biggest complaint delves a little deeper into the sizing issue. I have to make sure it's super tight so it doesn't bounce. Trying to wear it without the bladder and bottles in the front so I'd have extra storage for layers, etc. its a beating because it's impossible to tighten it or adjust it so that the bottles don't bounce.
    Easy to wash, comfortable, and lightweight. Chafing issues that you talked about it the video plus a little bounce in certain situations.
    Will get the UD SJ vest next. Vapor air was more than I needed for my first 50 miler this month.

  • @jessecostello
    @jessecostello 8 років тому

    I've been wearing this pack for about seven months and ran with it at Leona this year (50-miler). I like it, but I have the exact same issue with the neck chafing. I've taken to either wearing a buff around my neck to avoid the chafing or just greasing myself up with body glide before I go out. Not the best solution, but it works for now. My issue with a comparable Salomon is that it cost nearly $200 but the bladder was extra. Bleurgh.

    Great review Ethan, 1 question. This is my 1st hydration pack and with all the air removed from the bladder, how much noise should I expect from the vest while running ? I've tried a few adjustments and have managed to lower it somewhat but I still get a noticeable amount of noise. Maybe this is normal but I'm interested in what noise you get from your pack.

    HI , Love you reviews, thanks . you mentioned the sizing, and the bag you tested was a S/M , you said that if your bring the chest straps to tight you get the neck issue, if you had tested a XS , would this have fiixed those issues?, I have seen some reviews that the recommended sizing asks for a S/M , however they ended up buying an XS , would you have fitted an XS? and would have it dealt with some of the sizing issues you had?
    Your comments would be appricaited, Thanks

    I have been using the Vapourairess for the past 9 months. Sizing is an issue. I had to send the s/m back and get an XS which fits better. I like this pack for training runs. Needs some tweaks such as collar area rubs where hose comes out the top. I had a "small/med" and at 180 lbs it fit....until I filled the bladder, went up a size and now it is a tad too big. Nice pack but I think for the price I could have done better... Maybe?

    Took me a while to find the right hydration pack for me (bigger chest, short torso); tried about 8 different brands/styles, but once I got the vapor air on I haven't looked back. I love this pack. I wore it on every training run, over 1,200 miles, from Dec through May in Iowa and always had what I needed; fuel, water, layers. I ran my first 50 miler with it 2 weeks ago and re-confirmed that I found the right pack for me. Layers (it snowed in May in Wisconsin - go figure), fuel (some things my body craved they didn't have at the aid stations) and tons of water (the humidity was still like 85% which meant very sweaty still). The pack is very light and breathable with so much storage yet doesn't become bulky or heavy. The bladder is very easy to fill on the go and I never lack for storage space. It was a bit pricey but I'm definitely getting my money's worth. I did have to do some 'lock down' adjustments on some of the straps as I agree they become annoying, but once I did those slight modifications I've had no issues as the pack maintains a lot of the elasticity so what adjustment I may have taken away in strap modifications, I still get with the packs ability to flex. Great review, thanks for the info!!

    • @mattanfang
      @mattanfang 8 років тому +1

      What were your lock down adjustments? I'm pretty sure that we ran the same race if you are talking about the Ice Age 50 a couple of weeks ago. Yeah... the snow was odd for sure. :-) Thanks for the feedback!

    Bought this pack and used it for 6 months. I faced the same problems also. The pack is stretchy which is good. However it is too stretchy especially at the side pocket area. Make the pack quite bouncy when run.
    Also, if you run with bottle in front pocket (no water bladder at back)the pack will move forward. That's why I always put one more bottle at the back to level up the weight.

    • @stomphk
      @stomphk 8 років тому

      +TheGingerRunner is quite difficult to select the appropriate material (stretchy but not too stretchy)to solve this issue.
      Seems UD 3.0 is solving this issue. They still use stiff stripe but the white fabric of the pack body provide a bit flexibility compared with the hexagon fabric at 2.0
      When will u put the 3.0 review online?
