  • Canned sardines are a delicacy in Portugal. The country has a long fish-canning tradition, to the point that the sardine has become a national icon. We visited Conservas Pinhais, one of the oldest preserving factories in Portugal, that has kept its artisanal canning method since 1920. It makes 30,000 cans a day.

I was eating a can of their sardines (spiced, tomato sauce) as the video played. I've done the same with other foods that have accompanying videos such as this one; e.g., capicola. It certainly improves the experience. It also helps me to forget, at least for a little while, the expense of these oftentimes imported artisanal food products.

Those look yummy. I'm not a big fish eater and picky about the fish. Don't care for strong flavored fish but for some reason I love those stupidly strong flavored sardines.
I'm most impressed by this company providing the good people with jobs instead of automating for the bean counters. Bravo.

I've been eating sardines in the can since I was born.
In my islands of Azores Portugal there's a factory that my Father worked.
But the best sardines is the fresh grilled ones with a cooked patato, corn made bread and a glass of red wine.

For many years I have eaten Portuguese sardines, even in my youthful days at college when most students didn't have enough money to live on, I always had sardines on my shopping list, plus pasta shells and flour. Now I am retired and rich (🙂) I still have these food items in my kitchen cupboard. 😋

Props to them for still employing a full work force. I find it hard to believe a human packing process would influence the taste that much (apart from the sauce maker maybe?), so they could very easily switch to machinery for the cutting and packing to save vast amounts of money, but they don't because they value tradition.
