Update: 6 years later and I couldn't be happier that fans enjoying this sincerely moving opening.

Gentlemen, we have gathered here on this day full of hope. With the remake having aired its first episode now is the time to come together to celebrate and spread the good word of this glorious story for all the younglings to hear. Hopefully, in time we will even get the whole story and, so god wills the sequel animated as well.

How much I wish that they’d use this in the new anime. The nostalgia and the melancholy of this song is unparalleled.
At least they got the VAs back. It wouldn't be the same without Tatum and Palencia.

yeah there' just so many moments in the remake i wished they just reuse the old scores, they try to be more "realistic" and that actually make them less memorable and there's too many moments where there's a lull with no background music playing.

I get chills everytime the chorus peaks during the wolves running shot. It's such a weird sensation to always have even when I know it's coming...

Beating this op would be nigh impossible though, the remake's op is still pretty good imo
they didn't even try to match visuals with the music in the new one
They should have reused this song, maybe redoing the cinematic, but keeping the original song. The new op doesn't really make you feel anything, and its cinematography is very mediocre.
It's not even a debate this one is a classic hard to top.

I feel you man, i had the same reaction. I was holding back tears thinking about how time has flown and how those times are in the past now. Crazy to me i watched this show first when i was 13, i had so much more optimism and crazy energy back then. Life really has a way of beating all that down into dust when the world sucks so much.

way better op than the new one. The new op does not make you feel melancholic reflecting Holo's loneliness on her journey to Yoitsu

So far my only gripe is the opening. Everything else is really well done!

A beautiful opening for a beautiful anime. I watched this in a time where everything was high school drama...I was not prepared for how mature this was.
I tried watching this when I was young and it was pretty much over my head. This is definitely a show for adults.

Have you read the LN? Cause now that I'm mostly through all the volumes, I feel like the anime ended in a very good place. If they were to do a third season, it would at max contain a couple volumes (like the other seasons), and will miss a bunch of stuff.

Same! Other than Lawrence and Holo being cute together like always, I was quite pleased that they nailed the background art this episode
From the first note of the song, it transports you back to the dawn just before the renaissance.
I really hope the remake next month will use this again.

i associate the opening with the times i was young and careless. i had no responsibilities. it makes me feel awful because i wish i could go through that time more, but at the same time i'm happy that the song gives me a funnel to remember my memories

This song came to mind a few years ago. and I could HEAR the op in my head for weeks but could not place it. When it finally struck me. I almost face palmed so hard I lost my euebrows.

Right in the feelings, its so nostalgic that i almost cry. Im ready to watch the remake, but its kinda sad that the new opening doesnt make you think emotionaly af about Holo's fear of being alone while traveling and falling in love with Lawrence. It just have a special place in my heart. Its like missing something you never had, that never happened
wow by pure luck did i stumble upon this. lets lay it out: i play guitar, so while i am watching Wolf and Spice i noticed the great op. i liked it alot and started searching for guitar tabs, all of the videos i found had for some reason a different song than the op i was searching for, but when i listend the song was much better. even though i had never heard it before it made me feel emotional. so me still confused searched up the op called tabi no tochuu since all the guitar videos had that title. and then i found this great song, the original op. and only by the first comment of this video, did i realise that i was watching a remake and not the original, i had no idea.
It is time for Holo to start her journey again , and for us to continue ours . The melancholy i feel is one of a kind and i watched this anime young and it had an impact on my life , might she find hapiness and us as well .

I'm going crazy because I prefer this animation, drawing style, etc. than the remake. I wish there wasn't a remake but a sequel with the same animation.
I think the issue with the remake is that they start it by spoiling the ending for literally no reason, the whole thing with the original was that it was melancholic, you really didn't know if lawrence was going to end up with holo or how things would go due to the issue with the wheat, the opening portrays that sense of insecurity, I like a lot of the new anime but I feel like the lack of melancholy in its vibe hurts it a bit
@@1ycan-eu9ji Same, I love the remake especially for not skipping content like the old one. But the whole vibe that the old one gave is something that I treasure so much and gives me nostalgia from when I watched it for the first time back in 2013.
Gladly I read the LN some time ago so the remake didn't spoil me anything but man, they really messed it up in that part. I guess they expected that the majority of viewers would be mostly fans, which I think is dumb because the more people watch it the better.

also old animes have often way "smother" and in general beautifuel "panels" that are literally painted be it old berserk, nausicaää - cowboy bebop etc its less "animated" and more "manga-like painted" ^^

@@funfungerman8401 You know, but even disregarding whether it is fully painted or some elements are animated here... most frames in new one are still. Like, literally still. The sky is moving and camera, but nothing else. Or maybe one person head is twisting a bit. The old version had much more alive scenes and all of it with way less budget and older technology. But now we get still frames with a bit of camera movements and one filter changing a bit during scene...
Sorry, I try as hard as I can to like new version but this first episode is seriously not convincing me.

This might be copium, but seriously, Tabi No Tochuu would make *perfect* sense as the second opening vs the first.
Not only does it give the new series a little more ground to stand on before it is inevitably just compared to the old one in all aspects, but it also would hit the sense of *nostalgia* in this opening perfectly, considering the lyrics.
We'll see if that holds true in a couple of months!

Im gonna be honest I only come here again after awhile because with so much hype watching the remake I can't lie I was very disappointed they changed the op song.

The one and only mistake of the new anime was not using this song again.
The new opening is not bad at all, and I can see they tried to emulate the feeling of this one to some extent.
But yeah, it wasn’t as great. Don’t think it could have been, really. Nostalgia is a strong drug.
Rest is much better, tho, so I’m not complaining at all.
The new OP is certainly good, but this older one however just hits the perfect emotional note. Admittedly I am not without my nostalgia goggles, but still, this one just feels right. Ah well, the new ones good too so its only a minor downgrade overall.

Having watched the remake first and now seen this OP, I will say that it is a really good OP, and fans are not overselling it, but they are underselling the remake's OPs. The remake's OPs are also very good and are honestly just as good as this one.

The remake's opening just can't hold up to this. Still rooting for our remake, but they def could have done better on the opening, especially with the really plain/clunky 3D horse they added.

i looked up at piano sheets, there is definitely one note swinging back in octave
came back to vocals, yep prelonged sylable continued with sharp resuming of voice
background, same thing here, percussion has one sharp note, strong pause and then you are hit with much lighter strike
same thing with strings here, very long swing up, with short down
EVERYTHING in that refrain swings, and it just swings on so many levels!
