haha this brings back some vivid memories. I remember being 16 around '99 or 2000 and coming home from school after an all-nighter of System Shock 2 to queue up a download of lain episodes each day. I was using shitty dial-up internet that took 4 hours to download one episode off of pirating sites so I'd fall asleep then wake up at 12am to microwave some ramen and watch lain. This anime blew my mind at the time and I still think about it to this day.
I remember when I was younger and first saw this anime, i think I was 11 or 12at the time. Haibane Renmei feels more understandable to a mortal like me cause I think it's more straightforward, but it's still got this sense of unreality or I guess the "uncanny valley" vibe like the world doesn't make sense but it somehow acts like it does, dreamy kinda. My mom was begging me to listen to Bôa’s song Duvet, plus the Twilight album this summer, because she grew up with it in her college years and it marked a turning point for alternative music, especially for New England’s indie-inspired music scene. She said that I’d like it because I was taking an interest in her selection of music from people like Mazzy Star and The Cranberries, so I decided to do that. When I first listened to it, I didn’t hear it as much; it was one of those songs were, I would just occasionally put it in a queue with songs that sounded a bit similar to it. However, come the fall of 2023, and now I’m starting to see why she is obsessed over it. It’s been played on the radio quite a lot lately, but now I know the reason. It’s because of its popularity online with Serial Experiments Lain fans, which I had no idea about, let alone the fact that this song that my mother loves so much is the OP for the anime itself. Coupled with the fact that my trans stepsis is heavily obsessed with it because she relates to Lain’s struggle and really wants me to watch the anime and hear Duvet too, and now I’m gaining a newfound appreciation for the song I never thought would come up.
