I appreciate your practical approach here. You keep it simple with a LUT and a couple of nodes. This is real world grading - the type of thing an average editor like me can do.

QAAAAZIIII! man o man i literally just had this issue happen to me on set the days before you dropped this. I asked for a reference days before but the DP's only reply was "make it look nice." He was off doing car shots while i was at basecamp and grade wise I did something along the lines of your commercial look, but he wanted the film look. When he got back and came over he saw the levels on my grade and he flipped out on me in front of producers and agency. In my defense it was a commercial mind you. Anyways, your video is spot on. You just saved someone a major ass reaming! wish it was me, you must have felt it in the universe. you released the day after i got my ass chewed out. now i need a new ass. lol all good love and respect. Thanks for sharing, this is good knowledge.

One, thing is not mentioned was the real reason cinema/film has such under exposed look, maybe I could be wrong, but at Cinema school they told us one the main reason a lot film has those looks was due projectors to avoid burn the films has kept as style over the years and in nowadays still important to have a good exposure for those projectors at cinema, Advertising usually is more for media related Screen, TV mobile and other platforms so the POP look is really important to catch attention on a short time on the screen where cinema is more to set a mood and tell a story and also need be project right.

Awesome as always, thank you! Best grading channel out there.
Just one question. I have the idea -maybe it's false- that the LUTs limit and clips your dynamic range and gamut (even the "good" LUTs like the utility conversion ones), so it's better to have them just in the very last node so you don't really lose data. What do you think? Thanks again!

Love how the film look is easier to create. Just shows there are much more important aspects of filmmaking than the colors/look. Although it can play a big factor.

I feel like you could've added some blue temp when you did the film look (for a proper match to Sicario). I wouldn't trust my judgement though. Really love your vids.
Btw, why is the film look sitting so low in the waveform? Is it because it's graded to be watched in a dark room?

I have a question sir! looking at the scopes of sicario, do you think they shot it more underexposed? or maybe they did a balanced exposure and brought it down? is it best to expose correctly and then bring it down than just bring it down and maybe get noise if we need to bump it a lit bit? Incredible video

Glade you stated this was a look recreation and not a direct copy. I have noticed that people copy a film look exactly not recreating it. Film footage was planned and shot for that look. Some footage is not but when graded people say it's not exactly the same. It was not shot the same and is a recreation, it should resemble not be exactly the same.
