Also! I would love to see what you guys create with whatever you learned from this tutorial. Please feel free to DM me or tag me on Insta with your color grades.
3 minutes in i was shocked, full vid got me rethinking my color grading proccess
this was probably the most helpful UA-cam color video ive seen next to Cullen Kellys stuff. Especially that trick with cleaning up neutrals. Thats a huge challenge sometimes with camera work in forests where everything is yellow green even after a general balance. The slight reduction on lift is perfect.
Thanks for watching! You can also experiment with the same adjustment but with the Log wheel. With that, you'll be able to set adjust the range of this "clean up" effect. ;)
this is by far, the best color grading tutorial i've ever seen
George seriously you should do a masterclass course. You really are amazing with Davinci resolve. Honestly can’t thank you enough with these tutorials. Awesome
Davie, thanks for the kind words. I've started to develop something but it could be a while. For now, there will be plenty more tutorials. Thanks for watching.
didnt expect but Learned so much new from this video
The music, the speed, the concise tone. Beautiful man
Thanks for the kind words Tommy. 🤝🏼
Yes!!!! I woke up 2 times in this video!!! Learning a technique and a good rest in the same time!!!
First time I've seen some one use the level control in sharpening. Great little tip
Absolutely Mind Blowing! Thanks for sharing
Just want to let you know that you can do the same functions in your HSL look nodes with the color slice tool instead. The color slice saturation slider applies saturation in a way that doesn't increase luminance which is the same as what you're doing with your HSL workflow. It will save you the time of disabling channel 1 & 3 every time.
Good tip. Thanks for posting this in these comments Jake.
This is literally the tutorial I've been looking for.
I’m glad I found your channel a couple of months ago. Bought your LUT pack and it’s the best LUT so far. I’ve been using it for all my work. Keep it up George! Big fan!
Im glad the LUT pack has served you well! Thank you for the support and for subscribing.
Sir, I loved the way you carefully walked us through this, beat by beat. Giving us great examples on what to do not to do and why not to do, and why to do. This is perfect sir. I appreciate you, God bless you and thank you. 🙏🏽
Glad you found it informative. Thank you for your positive review. 🤝🏼
Please never stop making these super amazing, informative and helpful tutorials.
More to come.
I feel like I learned SO MUCH bonus information in this lesson. Walked away with way more than I expected. Thank you for sharing your Resolve wizardry with us George
Im happy to hear that! Which tip did you find the most useful?
GEORGE! One of your BEST tutorials yet man! Learned so much!
Right
Hi Jeremy. Thank you 🤝🏼
just watched this with my sunday breakfast, thanks for that nice music you used for the background! (and all the info, learned a few new tricks) ;)
Great tutorial George. I purchased your K85 powergrade and I must confess it’s worth more, for me it’s a gift and I appreciate you. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and will also pass it on.
Cheers.
George is fantastic as always, but you gotta kill the distracting bg music to a much lower level.
Thanks for the feedback.
Or get rid of it all together. It’s hard to concentrate on your otherwise great vid.
I like the music 😊
Absolutely amazing tutorial
I'm so glad I have subscribed to your Chanel.
Thank you George

That was a very good tutorial, thank you very much! Does anybody know whats the genre of the song playing in the background? Want to find more like it on the platform i use for music (epidemic sound)

@@george.colorist thank you very much my brother!! 🙏
This one is a bit more sophisticated than the previous highlight/white and shadow/black matte trick. But this one is a lot more friendly towards my lousy 8-bit images. Not pushing it hard means will not break 'it'. The use of HDR is superior to conventional primaries in 8-bit realm; desired looks is achieved within seconds, without breaking a thing. Literally in seconds. However, it is overly fine-tuned/specific that the FallOff (fade) sometimes does not successfully work on that particular realm. Thus, as with all things equal, there is no one-size-fits-all.
Because primitive stuff is used, rendering is friendly towards my lousy system. (I do not use power window. Power window probably consumes extra power. I do not know, really, as I never use it, not once, because I am not into "cinematic" fad. 8-bit image will become ugly very quickly and easily.)
Oh, as for the invert of black node, I need to invert mine. Look at the 'key' thing, the mask ought to be white in the shadow/black because it is the dark part what needs to be smoothened. I am stating the obvious for n00bs such as yours truly. LMAO! There is no clear separation for me to look at the effect and hence I tested it with some test images/charts and feck me... it really separates the black and white! It is a no wonder George is 'obsessed' with matte.
I should be obsessed with matte too! This thing simplifies my life! I can spend more time sipping coffee until my teeth are stained rather than whipping up node after node creating a vicious node cycle until the cows come home! 99.999999% Internet colourist gurus, 'scientists', and 'mathematicians' do not use matte, low soft, high soft, HSL; they focus too much on 'cinematic' malarkey. OMFAG! Look at their convoluted nodes, they call their nodes "The only node structure you ever need"! I think they deliberately make things difficult and label them 'secrets' so as to secure their own income.
Another thing about George is he explains every move. For example, HSL node is to clean up the neutral/s, hence -0.01 is already overwhelming. Some other gurus use HSL but randomly turn down to very low number and turn up the HSV without explaining why the need of that HSL. Some do 50% down HSL, 50% up HSV, also no explanation as to why those odd moves. N00bz like me can spend all our life adjusting and we still see nothing much different with or without HSL (keyword here is 'visually imperceptible'), and so we drop that HSL and stick to HSV instead to free up brain power.
bro.. very good.. this is very good. but for me unfortinately it is too difficult ((( newbee... Hope will see several tuts for begginers for example i still do not understand how to make 100% right CST for Black Magic, cuz in every tut different technic so I realy starting make crazy about this...
Yes! I will begin uploading tutorials for beginners very soon.
❤❤ thanks 🙏🏻
Np!
What a fantastic look breakdown! Using an alpha of the same image to limit certain operations is so clever - loved that!
I just had a quick question - is there a reason why you're using just the G channel in your HSV and HSL nodes? I noticed that you are switching channels 1 & 3 for the HSV & HSL nodes. So whatever you do in your Gamma and Gain is already going to affect the saturation only. So I'm curious to find out if there is a reason why you do your adjustments to the G channel only instead of doing them to the YRGB. Thanks for your input in advance.
Incredible work! Looking forward to seeing more of your videos.
Thanks Marieta! In regards to adjusting the G channel as opposed to using the YRGB wheel, its just a habit of mine from getting used to adjusting individual channels. You can adjust via the YRGB wheel or the G channel. It will do the same thing.
@@george.colorist Thanks for your swift reply! Yeah, I thought that was the case but just wanted to double-check. Excited to see your upcoming work! 🙌
I don't have the "Add Matte" option in Group Pre-Clip. Is it a feature of version 19 or something? Also, when I lower the mid-detail, it affects everything, not just the blacks
It's not a feature of Resolve 19. You can't create matte nodes on any Group level node tree. Only in individual Clip node trees.
one node per each color adjust?
Beautiful ❤. Can I get the powergrade?
Just follow the tutorial and save it as a PowerGrade.
Hey George. Great tutorial. Would love to know more about the matte node. Why do you choose to use it? What is its purpose in layman's terms.
I use it often because its quick to pull up and i like the key that it gives me for quick, broad adjustments to highlights or shadows.
@@george.colorist I like the matte thing, unfortunately is only available in clip mode and not in pre or post when grouping. How do you use matte for glow and sharpness when adding to a group of clips?
@@daniellrodriguezs2308 use it at the clip level.
@@george.colorist that’s very inconvenient as some clips might need to be slightly adjusted in exposure or balance. So copy and paste on all clips will not work. If anyone knows a better solution?
George, what type of file footage you working with ?
Great tute thank you!! 🙂 .. what is the music you used?
Its from Artlist. Flight of the Inner Bird (Slowed and Reverbed) by @yehezkelrazmusic
@@george.colorist thanks mate.. really nice
Very nice! Thank you for sharing this knowledge! What camera was used for this shot?
0:03
Thank you. I missed it. Shot on a Red, perhaps this is why it looks so nice! I’ve noticed most colorist when working on footage for a tutorial of this sort is most of the time footage from an Arri or Red. Makes me wonder if this type of ‘look’ is possible with other brand cameras. Thank you
Question for you. In your saturation layers why are you only manipulating the green channel?
This is because we have changed the RGB channels into controls for Hue, Saturation, and Value inside of an HSV color space which we set in the node settings. In this set up, the Red Channel becomes the control for H (hue), the Green channel becomes the control for S (saturation), and the Blue channel becomes a control for V (value).
Thank you
As a beginner I have some questions
1. How do you create that matte node in color page?
2. Does the matte target high luminosity or the color white?
Thanks in advance
1. Right click on any node, go down to Add Matte, and select the name of the clip you're working on. This is shown in this tutorial if you need a visual reference.
2. The matte node creates a key using the luminance range of the shot, creating a smooth natural selection. By default, it targets highlights. You can invert the mask to select shadows. You can also further refine the selection by using another key/mask tool such as the Qualifer tool or the PowerWindows tool.
Comment section almost as good as the video itself. Thanks for the info.
This was a good one George, though I’m a bit confused on the matte node, as it applies to the blacks node: I was under the impression the matte only affects the highlights and upper mid tones, not shadows? Maybe I missed something?
By default, the matte node creates a smooth selection that targets the highlights but this selection can be inverted to affect the shadows which is what I did in this workflow.
@@george.colorist Gotcha! "Option O" ?
@@jarrodbarker Go to the key panel to invert the selection.
@@george.colorist thanks!
Sorry, I missed premiere
Great tutorial, but complicated as hell. Not for beginners for sure. It's a great way to learn nevertheless.
Thanks for watching 🤝🏼
Would love more insight on the separation technique
Can you clarify which one you're talking about?
@@george.colorist
I apologize for any confusion earlier. I was referring to the Saturation procedure, specifically where nodes are created within the compound clip and adjustments are made using light and gamma to achieve direct changes. I would appreciate a detailed explanation of how the lift, gamma, and blacks functions work in this context. Additionally, a tutorial on this topic would be very helpful. If possible, a comparison with the density saturation in Davinci 19 and DCTL methods will also be beneficial. Thank you!
2:15 what is selected before MID adjustment? In node Blacks
The red dot that is on the Key panel icon is showing that theres a key being applied. In this case, the matte node.
Why did you use HDR color wheels instead of log or primary?
I like the way the HDR wheels adjust the image when adjusting primaries and in the context of this tutorial, I wanted to have access to that Shadow range in the image for the adjustment I applied with the PowerWindows.
@@george.colorist what camera was used to record this footage? I did not get the colorspace in the begining. The footage was converted upfront to rec709?
@@halo_exe Camera info is at 0:03. For this workflow, we used a Resolve Color Managed timeline with DaVinci Wide Gamut as our working color space. Since the clip is RAW, Resolve automatically detects its RAW info, including color space and gamma, and converts to DWG while previewing the Rec.709 for reference.
when you are checking the skin tones around 2:50 how do you get the little circle to appear on your waveform and scopes it won't show up for me?
In the Video Scopes panel, click on the Scopes settings (3 little dots on top right) and enable Display Qualifier Focus.
@@george.colorist perfect thank you so much!
I only like to know why are You using "Add Matte" technique for Black, Glow and Sharpness nodes only?
It creates a quick and smooth selection for the areas that I want to add those specific effects to.
is this raw file / rec.079 footage i mean from artlist?
Yes.
You are an evangelist and you share it for free!!!!!!!
Why are you crying in the background😂
dammit you got a sub
thanks you for every things expect background music, too annoying @.@
