Mmhhh...Wonder if a What Happun on Cyberpunk Edgerunners would make for an interesting video...
thank you for making videos
This video is really boring and not good.
Have you ever considered doing an episode the rts Alchemist (aka Animos)? There is almost nothing on the game anywhere I've looked. And that's a shame, consider how interesting it's setting and design were.
The best part about that infamous Gamespot review is how it ends with telling you to wait for Colonial Marines instead.
Now thats comedy.
It's weird to think people rejected the dual stick controls so hard here, only to rave about them when Halo released a year later.
I guess critics must have been more open to it when it was introduced alongside a new console.
@@garegga4 which is weird because I found an old Judgement Day or Electric Playground review where Tommy Tallerico trashed the controls to Timesplitters 1 because it had the same dual analog controls that this game had, along with Medal of Honor and Goldeneye. And that game came out on PS2.
To be fair, as a kid I remember playing a power rangers game on PS1 which was the first game I ever saw that used the analog stick, I remember thinking it was dumb and would never become the norm.
We almost died as a studio making an Alien game based off a terrible movie.
We really died as studio making Catwoman movie game of all things.
Then Batman saved us. Sounds like a Batman/Alien crossover story that should exist alongside the other ones.
We died
There's a Crossover comic of Alien vs Batman
@@OverlordAbraxas there are plenty
@@OverlordAbraxas A few actually
@@Snake4985 ya and only the 1st is good. Same with Batman/Predator comics only the 1st is good the rest blow
I'm glad more people are learning where the dual thumbstick control scheme really came from
Goldeneye also had a dual stick control option even earlier using two controllers, though the sticks where inversed compared to the modern defaults.
Medal of Honor on PS1 had the same control scheme option a year earlier
@@Meatball1989 Yeah, but that was like GoldenEye where it was an alternate control scheme, so many didn't know about it back then. Alien Resurrection was the first to default to the now standard scheme, I believe.
Whoever that reviewer is that complained about that control scheme, must feel so stupid now that it is a standard for FPS games and it works
I can see why people may have disliked the control scheme at first, especially if their first experience with it was in a rather unfairly hard game like this.
Game journalists? Embarrassed at their own mistakes? They'd rather blame everything on gamergate.
I instead prefer to imagine that he stands by it, and is just eternally frustrated that it became industry standard.
"Essentially, they'd simply walk in from off-screen and just swipe at the player"
Gearbox: WRITE THAT DOWN, WRITE THAT DOWN.
Between this and Colonial Marines, I'm beginning to realize just how much of a miracle Alien: Isolation really was.
Aliens fireteam elite is good as well.
Alien Trilogy was pretty good...
Aliens vs Predator was really good
There are good games out there of the franchise but they are never huge sellers. I remember when isolation came out it got a 5 from ign as the y thought it was “too hard”.
I remember enjoying Aliens vs Predator II quite a bit.
The 2010 Aliens vs Predator is another story, though. The whole series has had a bit of a quality roller coaster.
Resurrection the movie holds a special place in my heart. i was 7-10 years old and had never even heard of a xenomorph. I was in a hotel flipping through the channels on the tv and came across the scene where they are swimming under the water. Very first exposure to the Alien franchise. blew my freaking mind. I loved it immediately. I think because of that i am one of the few people that love that movie.
I loved the movie, because I loved the design of the Newborn, it freaked me out more than anything else. As well as the scene where Ripley meets her clones. I was always terrified and fascinated of the concept of merging of the species and the movie was right up my alley. I watched all other Alien movies, and thought of them as pretty good, but in no way scary. Alien 4 scared me stupid.
To be fair, Resurrection is more a Jean Pierre Jeunet movie with occasional aliens, than an Alien movie. It's an artistic fever dream, with Jeunet's favorite cast (Dominique Pinon, Ron Perlman), themes, dutch angles and a color palette directly from The City of Lost Children.
I've always liked Resurrection. I only had three of the movies but not the 3rd one. I was always left wondering what killed Ripley. It makes perfect sense for Weylon-Yutani to clone her to get the queen from her.
I actually liked this variant of Ripley, more of a predator herself than scared victim.
The Humalien is still as weird as it was in 1997. But for gritty, Riddick-like sci-fi action horror, AR holds up really well, and looks and sounds great
I remember playing this as a 10-year old and being terrified. The sound design completely immersed me, in a way no game had before.
Croc was also the first game I ever played. My mum used to do the ice level platforming, whenever she had a free moment. Those memories will always be cherished
This game was ahead of it time with the controls
I remember playing this at a mates house one weekend and the audio design had us terrified. There was no horror games that sounded this cinematic at the time, Metal Gear Solid was close but this was scary
Yeah! I also saw it back in the day, and I was a kid. It was a far more than enough to make me really scared. I mean, even the original Resident Evil Director's Cut, as goofy as it is, scared me a lot.
Ironically, Alien Ressurrection was the first Alien move I ever saw, and it took years to find out that the previous movies were scarier.
Silent hill would like a word with you
This MF needs to be evangelized into the word of Silent Hill immediately
This game is kinda underrated. I do feel bad for Jez San. It really affected him badly. That Dual Analog concept was brilliant. Fair play for using that Retro Gamer Issue. At least Argonaut bounced back with Rocksteady Studios and made the Batman Arkham series. Catwoman also had a terrible development too by the way thanks to Warner Brothers according to EA UK producers I spoke to. Great video Matt.
Jez San was a manager that was barely around and everyone hated. I wrote the Eurogamer Making Of that this is based on, and everyone I talked to despised Jez
@@rvbremastered7527 Oh wow. Thanks for sharing this material!
no, the game was great for me. but it was very hard to aim with the ps1 joystick. L1 and L2 buttons i think.
I kinda have a love/hate relationship with this game. I loved the sound design, no music and just the occasional scream and explosion on the first few levels, only to be replaced by complete silence broken by the occasional noise from the ship and heavy breathing from a Xeno at the end of the corridor, I LOVED IT. I also had a lot of trouble with this damn game due to how hard it got after the first boss fight, heck, I don't even remember getting past that boss at all.
Maybe I need to revisit this game sometime soon, but I find it kinda funny how it was lambasted for using a MODERN DUAL ANALOG control scheme. Nobody was ready for that shit in 2000, especially coming from a PS1 game.
GoldenEye 007 had kinda a dual analog mode going on but you needed two controllers for that lol
If you couldn't do it back in the day when you tried all day. Then don't try again unless you use cheats for infinite ammo. It will ruin your patience. It's actually unfair as fuck, with enemy spawns at every corner in some cases. Yes. Constant stream of xenos coming out of a corner for no fucking reason and only a few handgun rounds. Lol
Oh hey, Wolf! Hope life is treating you well :D. (This is Rico from Dtoid)
@@oafkad Hey there! Long time no see! I uh... I'm sorry for being away for so long, I don't even know what to say, but at least I hope you're all doing alright without me dicking around and spewing nonsense ^__^
@@zeibozcozz5067 Not just that but the incredibly limited Autodoc and more Facehuggers than you can actually cure yourself of in the levels. God I hate them. They are so hard to see at times and if you can't find an Autodoc you're dead once the meter depletes.
I can't believe someone ELSE remembers that Conan O'Brien 'in the year 2000' bit...
I felt like the rest of the world was gaslighting me about its existence.
My favorite one was when Conan said "In the year 2000 Sting will change his name to Applesauce McGee" lol
Every time some one says 2000 I sing it at the top of my lungs….people look at me like I’m insane but I do the payroll so they keep quiet
That Die Hard Trilogy and Genesis Alien 3 stage themes are etched in my brain for all time...Great music
This is one of the few games that responds beautifully to overclocking in an emulator. It can run at a smooth 60fps, and then throw in high res, widescreen, and geometry correction, and it's literally a modern HD remaster.
If anyone wants try a good PS1 Alien game and has the means, Alien Trilogy is a pretty decent Doom clone, with Aliens
I actually like this game, it had good scary atmosphere and pioneered modern FPS controls, so at least it achieved something in the end
I genuinely loved this game. It had great atmosphere, amazing graphics and sound design, and also was very fun to play (just very, very hard, but back then I hade much more patience for games). The controls required some practice, but after a while you could play it almost as good as with a mouse. I still think it's one of the best Alien games out there, it's a shame it's so underrated.
Alien Resurrection’s development nightmare makes it one of the most accurate movie licensed video games ever.
Honestly I think you should do the original Resurrection film as the behind the scenes sounds like an episode in itself.
"we did quite a bit of work on it effectively for free" - I knew this was gonna be a whopper when I heard those words.
As much as I like me some OG Halo...it's undeniable that it perfected on someone else's good idea.
Very cool video! that being said you might as well start scripting the "Alien Resurrection (The Movie) - What Happened?" because you are definitely getting a suggestion from your patreon.
I know that Halo was a rather innovative game (things like the limited number of weapons you can carry, dedicated buttons for melee and grenades, and the regenerating shields all cause it to play notably differently from contemporary FPS's, not to mention its LAN play capability), but I could have sworn dual analog controls were kind of standardized by that point? Maybe I'm confusing it with mouselook controls, which definitely were being used in computer FPS's.
In any case, it's actually kind of wild to hear that this obscure game sort of invented the de facto control scheme for modern first-person games, and even more wild to see so many critics utterly trashing it for that.
Halo was the first that made the dual analog sticks work well. It probably helped that the Xbox controller worked better for it than the Playstation 1 controller.
Hearing the devs talk about the game being too easy and that they could clear it with a pistol reminds me of Civvie's thoughts on the subject: "Bullshit! Anyone who can beat this game using only the pistol has a predictive algorithm for a brain".
Wow, had no idea that this is where the fps dual stick control scheme came from super interesting.
I actually really liked this game. Was one of those few games that even today still manage to scare because of the outstanding audio design and just over all tone. The irony of game outlets saying the control.scheme was bad ha
It's a shame because this actually looks really good graphically, but also kind of crazy that AvP actually hit first and that was the one I sunk lots of time into.
Just wanted to say that the ending to the Alien Resurrection movie is the most emotionally unsettling scene in the entire franchise
It’s really got some good stuff in there, and it’s a real shame they tried dragging the 100+ year old Ripley kicking and screaming into a weird clone plot instead of doing their own thing.
I liked the movie, I "100%ed" the whole Alien franchise in a day... most of them are good, some are watchable, all are very interesting.
@@androidinblack5291 Yes, I wish the movie was different, maybe show us what earth or some colony looks like.
The upcoming Alien series will show earth, but it's not the same as seeing 80's Alien version of earth would be like
@@androidinblack5291 There is a really interesting French sci-fi film hidden somewhere within the movie. Most of the things I disliked were because it was “Alien 4” . It could’ve been a satire of American Action Sci-Fi called “In Space the Macho Men Smell Farts”
@@QuietFromMetalGearSolid I doubt it's what you mean, but the director's cut of alien res has an alt ending with Ripley and call back on earth.
Honestly this game I recall seeing prerelease screenshots of it in some old magazines and it resembled something closer to that of a Resident Evil game, honestly I'm glad we got this FPS game instead, it definitely was years ahead of the curve with it's modern FPS controls and definitely something I want to check out at some point.
"guess you guys just aren't ready for that yet... but your kids are gonna love it" - Argonaut games, probably
I actually liked Ressurection (the movie.) It's not an all time classic or anything, but I remember enjoying it.
We need a "Google Stadia" Wha' Happun episode please!
I still think about that one review on alien ressurection on ps1 about controls that became standart(reviewer was puzzled) for a long time
I didn't recognize this game until the box art came up. I remember seeing it at my local rental place so many times and just going "eh" because it was so generic looking, I never bothered to even look at the back of the box. This team could not catch a break, lol.
It's so unreal hearing that the control scheme we all use today was regarded as horrible.
And Halo claiming to have created that control scheme? Medal of Honor was using it in 1999 and MoH Underground in 2000. Over a year before Halo.
Yet another license game that turned out better than the film.
Nah movie is pretty fun
The movie is actually pretty good.
I had this game on the original playstation back in the day, was scary as heck lol 😆
I'm in vote of Google Stadia What Happun and the Amazon attempt at a MOBA game called Crucible What Happun.
FINALLY! Someone knows about Alien Odyssey!
I had no idea the brief videogame in the film was done by the games developers.
Quite surprising with the controls getting criticism seeing as games were going that way anyway even the first medal of honor game had it as a selectable option and that was released a year before and even the first Timesplitters game was released the following week with the launch of the PS2 with that same layout. So it's obvious the people making the games started all seing it wad the way to go.
14:00 Great video but at this point all I could hear was "LEO! LEO! LEO!"
Yeah, pretty sure he used Ultraman Leo's theme around that timestamp
So when I clicked on this, I though it was about the movie. Totally forgot there was a game, The only reason I knew about it at all was how critics hated the use of the analog sticks.
Hell yeah, I didn’t even know they made a video game tie in for Resurrection lol
I wonder what that Gamespot reviewer is thinking now that that control scheme is the norm for FPSes...
If Matt wants to return to Argonaut in the future, especially to look at it's final days, then there's always Malice! Announced as a PS1 game, then moved to Xbox, then picked up by Vivendi (via Sierra), then made into a multiplatform title (Xbox & PS2), then announced that No Doubt would provide voice work (with Gwen Stefani voicing Malice), then delayed to 2003, then dropped by Sierra, then picked back up by ZeniMax in the US (via Mud Duck) & Evolved Games in Europe, & then finally released in mid-2004 (without No Doubt, without a doubt) to absolutely no fanfare, followed by Argonaut going out of business just a few months later.
And I'm sure Matt would probably find out that Malice would originally going to be Croc 3, or something.
There's full gameplay from one of the Gwen Stefani builds of Malice on UA-cam and it was very surprising to see what ended up getting cut from the final product. It looks like many levels were removed and game's story had to be heavily reworked.
I keep forgetting Malice was a thing. I remember seeing some footage on it and wanting to play it. Apparently wasn't that great.
@@SwordfighterRed I've generally heard that it's decent, but not much else. Another example of "Long, tumultuous development history results in underwhelming final product".
Man I loved this game and remember the terrible waiting and delays. Would have preferred the original 3rd Person design but I loved the deadly facehuggers. Also the sound design was visceral.
Love the outro music from Alien3, I remember it being the perfect relaxation music after doing a playthrough on the Genesis.
Totally was not expecting to hear the theme to Ultraman Leo in an “Alien: Resurrection” video.
When you've completely forgotten about the movie then Matt comes in with What Happen about its game that you didn't even know it existed
So what happens to you when that situation comes to fruition??
I remember seeing the CGI trailer for the game on the Alien Resurrection VHS tape with my dad when I was a kid. I always thought that was the coolest game I've ever seen and wanted to play it so badly back then, not knowing that CGI trailers where just to hype up the game and not the actual game. After watching this video. I'm glad i didn't play this game as a kid cause I would of been very disappointed that I was misled that hard.
Dude alien3 for the Sega genesis soundtrack has been engrained into my mind great choice of background music. You're awesome man.
Matt this is a really good video. Tight editing, chock full of interesting and relevant info, good speaking pace. There's a couple channels on YT that do this 'what happened' theme, but the others often get sidetracked trying to tell the entire history of a company instead of just explaining what actually happened. You keep the context brief, which is perfect. Keep it up man.
Just had an idea, is there any games out there that turned out waaay better than anyone expected? Like a 'what happened' in a good way, how did this tiny studio of inexperienced programmers strike gold?
(Speaking of which, might be time for a No Man's Sky vid, now that Hello Games has won awards for it)
I most certainly clicked too fast and didn’t see the game in the title, but as much as I would love to see a video on the movie, the story of a licensed game coming out three years after the attached property is pretty wild lmao. Also, that ad read for magic spoon was surprisingly engaging and succinct, and the motion graphics work was so clean. Never been genuinely impressed by a sponsor read before, but y’all did it.
Last time I was this early, Argonaut Games still existed!
...Aww, I made myself sad.
Happy Halloween season, Matt...cheers for kicking it off with the beginning of your annual What Happened Spooky Marathon! 😁
...and yup, if the control scheme of Alien Resurrection had not eventually caught on, for the scheme in question, it would have been...
"Game over, man...game over!"
Excellent video i remember playing the demo when I was like 10 and Can you do a What happen on Deadly premonition please and thank you :)
great video! i'd love to see a similar story covering nexus the jupiter incident, that game is an underappreciated gemstone.
2:08 "...the game faced massive development turtles."
Those turtle boys don't cut you no slack.
Impressive that they helped setting the standard for dual analog and at least they had a happy ending! i also love that game cover design!
My sister and I played Croc: Legend of the Gobbos on our PS1 back when we were in school... Ah, memories.
As for Alien Resurrection: The Game, this thing might have had problems but is now becoming known as a masterpiece (for masochists looking for a challenge) and once you play it, the reality is that AR:VG is actually the best survival horror FPS on the PS1 alongside Alien Trilogy.
You've heard the infamous GameSpot review, now play the game and revel in the ultimate in videogame masochism...
Best played alongside Bethesda Softworks' Terminator Rampage.
Loved the background music from the second (or fifth stage technically) of alien 3 for sega.
Love the episodes when in the end talented developers find themselves in a good place (this time it is Rocksteady).
Spec Ops: The Line (2012) - What Happened?
lol i did not expect to hear that ultraman leo track during the gameplay section .
The quality of your videos never ceases to impress.
Didn't expect to see a What Happened on this one, but was very eager to hear the development story of this unorthodox title.
I actually grabbed a copy of Alien: Resurrection after the old Shitstorm episode which highlighted it. It really is impressive for a PS1 FPS! Surprisingly atmospheric, pretty good graphics, and a generally decent framerate. A shame that there was no voice acting. With the impeccable sound design the absence of voices feels really off; but I see now why it had to be cut.
Thanks for looking into this one, Matt! Another great episode.
01:24 - Shoot, got me there. I was fully expecting the movie, not the video game, haha. Now on with the show! :)
An interesting story, this one--thank you for sharing it! ^_^
I was reminded during viewing of another game that I'd be interested in learning the story of--another game that faced the problem of looking dated on release (but that doesn't seem to have pivoted to prevent this); another game based on a popular IP (but in this case a beloved entry therein); another game that (I feel) arguably had some good ideas (albeit with a not-great final result).
And that game would be: Deathtrap Dungeon (the 1998 version, developed by Asylum Studios and published by Eidos).
Please do What Happen on:
- See No Evil 1 and 2
- Brother 1 and 2 starring Sergei Bodrov Jr.
- Sadak 2
- the new Saints Row reboot
- Road Rage aka the spiritual successor of the Road Rash series
- Morbius
- Suicide Squad movie
- X-Men Origins: Wolverine
I didn't realize this video was new for like half the day. All this Alien stuff starts to blend in to me 😂
Whoever edited this video, I'd like to thank you for including Ultraman Leo's theme
Alien Resurrection is amazing looking in 4k on Duckstation. You can make the controls more tolerable too. Completely changes the game feel.
MFng Duckstation won't allow me to upscale games on the Xone emulator... the options for doing that aren't even available, every tutorial become useless.
That swimming xenomorph scene is literally one of like 2 or 3 scenes that I actually liked in that movie.
Love the use of the ultraman Leo theme!
I love how you're using Sega Genesis' Alien 3 music in this video.
missed opportunity for an NBA Jam style game
Appreciate the Matt Furniss Alien 3 BGmusic!
Never knew argonaut became rocksteady what a huge comeback
i would love to see an episode on Spectrobes
Disney's take on the Pokémon formula
the franchise that only lasted 3 games
Was dual-analog really that hard to get to grips with? I remember Halo was the first dual analog game I ever played, around 2002, and it took me about ten minutes to get comfortable with the movement and aiming controls.
I think it was an unfortunate case of being way ahead of its time and its unfortunate association with the film that could be attributed to its reception at the time.
I remember seeing the trailer for that game like around 97 when we rented speed 2. I completely forgot it didn't get released until 3 years later haha also the trailer sells you a completely different game.
I think we rented this back then and I remember I couldn't get through the start because it was too scary; the sound design and the creeping of the Xenos in that first level, man.
Best part of a Saturday morning.
The most paralyzing element of this story to me is how the team reacted to the movie. That moment of realizing "oh crap, we're making a game based on THIS," I feel so sorry for them.
I hope that you can make a video about the cancellation of Maximo 3 which is the sequel to Maximo VS. The Army of Zin. I feel bad for Maximo because he's never going to see Sophia forever.
Hearing Alien and freaking Croc of all things mentioned in the same sentence is bizarre.
Gary Sheinwald sounds like a parody name of Jerry Seinfeld.
Ah I remember renting this game from Blockbluster in the early 2000's. Never got to finish the whole game.
I loved this game growing up. I wish it had a few less facehuggers running around but other than that, solid movie/ horror game. I still have the cheat codes memorized. Pause, Circle Left Right Circle Up R2 for Cheats, and Square, Up, Down, Circle, Left, R1 for Research Mode.
I'd love an episode on those exorcist prequel films where we got two versions of the same thing released with almost the same cast.
Kudos for the Alien 3 Genesis song at the end. Lest we forget that game has an awesome soundtrack ^^
After wondering where I heard of argonaut i remember i-ninja (funny enough the first media piece to use i before a word?)
It sits as a serious nostalgic childhood memory but on release actually had some pretty harsh critique. It could be worth looking into, (not sure if it’s worth a what happened but) for a game that amongst angsty elementary schoolers was a cult classic it seems like there may be some backstory to its development (betas that were very different etc)
Showing so much footage of the Ripley avatar in the game really showed off the way they manage to convey how damp and unpleasant everyone looked in the movie. You can really smell it right through the screen.
I will forever defend alien resurrection (the movie) as an underrated gem.
Seeing that brief mention of Die Hard Trilogy I’d like to see a Wha Happun or something that takes a look at the Die Hard games and their connection to the Dynamite Deka series in Japan and good old Detective Bruno Delinger and his pepper shaker and grandfather clocks.
I was thinking why 14:45 music was sound so familiar.
Oh my god it was ultraman Leo opening.
I freaken loved Croc as a kid....I would be overjoyed for a remaster of it or Gex.
