Alien 3 isn't just embarrassing and ridiculous, it's an absolute disaster. The autopsy scene with Newt makes me so angry and sad every time. Even David Fincher hates and despises this shitty movie.
I'm one of those that has come around to this film. I absolutely hated it the first time I saw it, but when I saw the assembly cut I started to change my mind on it. While not the film Fincher wanted to make, his talent is very clear in it, and you even see early signs of his style that he would develop and refine over the years. I like the bleak and oppressive tone, the visuals are often gorgeous, the acting is top notch, the music while a bit over the top at times is fantastic, and I like that all three of the first Alien films didn't try to replicate each other, they all approached the concept in a unique way. While the most flawed of the first three Alien films, I think it's on par with the first two. However, had Fincher been able to make the film he wanted, I think it could have easily been the best.
Same here. It's absolutely a flawed film, but it has moments of brilliance. Genie-from-a-bottle? One of my wishes would be to see the movie that Alien3 could have been.
Yeah, in a lot of ways Alien3 is a testament to just how talented Fincher already was. The film *should* have been an absolutely unwatchable dumpster fire, but Fincher's skill with the camera and working with actors was still enough to elevate it to "watchable."
@@battlion507 it was something all right. It has its moments, and Ron Perlman is always a delight, but it comes across more as a spoof of the first three films, rather than a continuation. It's still entertaining, but like the first AVP film, I put it in it's own seperate camp.
Treating David Fincher like this on his first movie makes me remember that one time a Studio suit told Steven Spielberg that he would ammount to nothing in Hollywood

I tell people that Alien 3 is one of my favorite movies and I get weird looks, but then I explain to them about the Assembly Cut and how Fincher got screwed over by the studio and killed what could have been a good movie.
I'm very glad that Fincher was able to bounce back. I felt so bad for him while being told about this whole mess. I knew that the theatrical cut was a mess but I had no idea the extent of it.
@@Amitlu Yes. That sequence in particular. But also themes. In the assembly cut, they actually do a pretty good job of conveying themes of the value of a human life and the fucked up way that it is largely disregarded for prisoners. Then, in the third act, it is completely thrown out the window and never referenced again and the focus just becomes Ripley's tragedy. It's messy and conversely asks you not to think to much about the film's conclusion after spending more than half the film asking you to think about injustice. It's thematic whiplash.
Killing off Hicks and Newt was a bad decision, but Alien 3 is not a bad movie on its own. It's a very dark and atmospherical movie, and honestly very unique for a sequel to an action blockbuster. Morse, Dillon and Clemens were awesome new characters. The movie looks and sounds fantastic, Elliot Goldenthal's score is absolutely perfect. The alien becoming different depending on what animal the host was, is a really cool addition. Ripley's death scene is really well done, and even though Aliens was already pretty much a perfect ending, this is still a great send off for the Ripley character. Far better than what they did with her in Resurrection. I'm really glad this movie exists.
I would just like to see something about the scrapped version of Justice League that was supposed to be directed by George Miller of Mad Max fame. I am disappointed we didn't get to see Immortan Martian or Valkyrie Wonder Woman.
I felt bishop was going to be revealed as a villain in the third, I always thought he implanted an alien into Hicks then put him to sleep and opened the doors for the aliens earlier. There was a line he says "they wanted a live specimen, they were quite clear about that" that always stuck with me
It's worth noting that Fincher was already quite experienced when he made Alien3. He was actually a big deal at the time, even without directing a single feature film. The studio he co-founded, Propaganda Films, was *THE* production company for slick ads and other promo videos. He'd won tons of awards and helped define the "look" of 80s pop filmmaking. And an absolutely absurd amount of future talent got their start there over the years doing videos and ads - including Michael Bay, Gore Verbinski, Spike Jonze, and Zach Snyder.
Paul McGann’s character was also brilliant. Alien 3 was not a typical Alien film and that’s what made it great, it was gritty, moody and dark and Bishop’s scene really hits that home.
I once read someone who explained that Alien 3 should have had a change in genre, the way Alien to Aliens did. They proposed that Alien 3 should have been a heist movie...which could have still worked with the real Alien 3's prison setting.
I remember eating this stuff up in the sci-fi movie rags in the '90s as a Teepling, about how it was supposed to be a Cold War thing but they got cold feet (hah) after the Berlin Wall fell. Reading about that goofy stuff in the Alien series was part of my formative parts of being a scifi nerd. Also 3 still has one of my favorite moments in the series when it did that scary version of the 20th Century Fox fanfare at the beginning.

I’m just gonna say this then bounce: I like Alien 3. It’s nowhere near as good as Alien or Aliens, sure, but as a closer to Ripley’s story it was fine. The Assembly Cut is the version to go for though.
Great episode, to anyone who enjoyed this I highly recommend Oliver Harper's retrospective on Alien 3 (and pretty much any of his retrospectives), while lacking in Matt's flair for comedy, Oliver gives great insight and context to a lot of the "what happened?"'s in films of the past and I find them highly enjoyable.
The comics that focused on the the three that survived at the end of Aliens is a whole lot better than what fox did with Alien 3. The relationship with hicks and the little girl. I still refrain from watching this film and I don't think Ill ever watch it.
Michael B has admitted to saying everything in that quote block you credited him for at 11:40. Then, as he said “I told my agent I don’t care how much they pay me that thing (the alien) is not coming out of me!” Then he looked at the interviewer camera and said “I was young and stupid.”

Imagine going to the cinema and say "This is the worst Alien movie ever made". We could never imagine. Yeah, after all and in perspective, it was okay.
Watching both versions, I get why people prefer the Assembly Cut, but it has problems of its own, mostly pacing that makes it drag. I wish there was a cut somewhere in between those two versions, but really, Alien 3 in any state is just an OK movie and a bad sequel. I get why some people like it, but ultimately so many ideas and characters are half-baked or clumsily slammed in there, you would need to reshoot most of the movie to get a worthy sequel to Alien/Aliens. Well, at least we have Alien: Isolation.
I've always been mixed on this movie. I will say though, the wooden satellite sounds like a unique and cool idea, too bad it got shafted in favour of Fiora. I do like that, in essence, they kept the religious monks, that's one aspect I like about Alien 3.
I remember hearing that H.R. Giger actually went to the producers of Alien 3 and repeatedly asked to help work on it, even going so far as to make a new alien design for free sending it to them, only for the producers to repeatedly turn him down.
I liked it, it's nihilistic setting made it my favourite of the franchise; it could not live in isolation (no pun intended) but as a trilogy ender I thought it worked with lots of fun unanswered questions.
On a real note Alien 3 is a good gem of a sci-fi movie to come across if you were looking for sci-fi movies from a bit ago apart from the established big ones, I dig it
Making movies is already a chaotic process, but the huge amount of executive meddling clearly didnt' help this particular film. Great video by the way.
I've literally only seen a directors cut version of this film which was in a collectors set and the version I saw is absolutely excellent. IDK the original that everyone always hates on but the one I saw is the best of the quadrilogy easily. The only thing I didn't like was Newt and Hicks being written out for no real reason.
Same, I don't know which version I saw, it's been years, but I remember actually liking it a lot outside of Newt and Hicks being unceremoniously killed off.
I respectfully disagree. While there were some cool shots here and there, it felt mostly like a boringly suffocating movie with a cast of characters that you couldn't give two shits about (Ripley aside of course). What made Alien and Aliens work so well was partly because of how sympathetic and memorable the whole cast was which made the viewer care when the titular Alien impaled them through the chest. Alien 3 replaced said cast which a bunch of unlikable, obnoxious and crazy prisoners that were barely distinguishable from each other to the point I was actually looking forward to see the Aliens getting rid of them than seeing them overcoming the Xenomorphs.
I assume you're talking about the 2003 Assembly Cut. It might as well be a Director's Cut except David Fincher had no involvement with it. This version is considered 'as close as possible to his original vision' and as far as I'm concerned, it's the only version of the film.
@@TheMaestro116 Eh, most of the marines weren't interesting in Aliens. Alien 3 had much more memorable characters in the form of Dillon, Aaron, Clemens, etc.
There is a difference in taking a sponsorship for the money and taking a sponsorship because you support the sponsor. And I 100% whole-heartedly believe you support In Search of Tomorrow. It is going to be a love letter to one of the best genres of film and during the best time period for that genre. If it's as good as In Search of Darkness it will be a must watch for any and all sci-fi fans out there.
I'm just happy this mess of a movie came out before internet and nobody can blame trolls or russian bots. Every single fan disliked this movie on his own with little to none interaction. No echo chambers, no memes, no collective bias. Quite an accomplishment.
It never ceases to amaze me how a studio can see a great script that might need some tweaking and instead of saying "This is good let's just tighten it up" they throw it out wholesale and then end up going with a blatantly terrible script.
This movie is a personal rabbit hole of mine. I have dug up so much info on this nightmare of a production that I've kind of become obsessed with it. To me the production is far more fascinating than the movie itself.
If only we could get each of those abandoned scripts made today (with a few alterations so that Sigourney Weaver can move on with her life), we might actually get back to having interesting Alien films.
How do you put these super in-depth videos together so quickly?! Your work ethic puts most other youtubers to shame! Though hope you're not slowly burning yourself out with your insane output speed.
I feel like alien 3 is my favourite of the franchise with its apocalyptical soundtrack and matching dread tone, its my favourite and it sticks out from the others in a good way. Hell I prefer it more than the first alien
BTW Michael Biehn is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. Met him and his wife Jennifer at the opening night for her directorial debut movie "The Victim". Right before the movie started he sat down right next to me in the theater. One of the best nights of my life, getting to talk with him as I am a huge fan of his work
I am part of the minority that liked Alien 3 and saw it as an end to Ellen Ripley's story, gave me vibes that they would've done more with Alien but with different people allowing anyone to have a role as iconic Ripley or Hex and what not, but apparently Fox has to ruin everything... 🤷♂️
Also one thing, the director's cut of Alien 3 as pointed out by Matt McMuscles, is not only an improvement but is the best version of Alien 3 to watch, made even me impressed. 😁
I saw Alien Cubed in the theater in the summer of 1992. It was one of the first movies I got to see by myself, and I was really excited about it. I was still pretty young and hadn't really developed a critical eye, especially for a franchise like Alien, which I loved with a passion. I remember leaving the theater thinking "What the hell did I just watch? Was that movie... awful?" It was a very sobering experience for lil me.
The alien was not cg. It was a rod puppet that they super imposed on the film which is why it looks off; they couldn't get the lighting to match and they really didn't much post production to make it look any better. The only cgi in the entire movie were the cracks on the alien's head right before it exploded, some shadows here and there, and some things blowing around on the planet's surface.

The brutality that they shot the scene of the autopsy of Newt still haunts me today. And breaks my mind in not knowing "why did they do that!?"
So how was alien Ressurection?
@@battlion507 it was something all right. It has its moments, and Ron Perlman is always a delight, but it comes across more as a spoof of the first three films, rather than a continuation. It's still entertaining, but like the first AVP film, I put it in it's own seperate camp.
Treating David Fincher like this on his first movie makes me remember that one time a Studio suit told Steven Spielberg that he would ammount to nothing in Hollywood
Well history proved him wrong in the end didn’t it

I tell people that Alien 3 is one of my favorite movies and I get weird looks, but then I explain to them about the Assembly Cut and how Fincher got screwed over by the studio and killed what could have been a good movie.
Alien 3 Assembly Cut is one of my favorite films too.
I'm very glad that Fincher was able to bounce back. I felt so bad for him while being told about this whole mess. I knew that the theatrical cut was a mess but I had no idea the extent of it.
I would give you weird looks if you said Alien *Resurrection* was your favorite movie.
Yep, Assembly Cut is a great movie.
This whole shitty movie is totally weird.
Alien 3 is a disaster.
The Assembly Cut is so close to being a decent film, it's tragic. Has legs up until the third act before it turns into a completely incoherent mess.
They could only fix so much in the end.
I think he largely means the tunnel chase scenes where its hard to keep track of who dies and who lives.
If the assembly cut is Close to decent, imagine how good it could have been without the interference . Tragic.

Ripley's death scene is really well done, and even though Aliens was already pretty much a perfect ending, this is still a great send off for the Ripley character. you know for a second there… I thought this was the aliens 3 Sega Genesis game.
*THIS HAS BEEN AN EPISODE I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR*

@tsorf fuck Hollywood they ruined favorite movies and shows.
Even horrible live anime movie
The voice you did at 11:00 for the Michael Biehn interview is absolute gold 👑
Paul McGann’s character was also brilliant. Alien 3 was not a typical Alien film and that’s what made it great, it was gritty, moody and dark and Bishop’s scene really hits that home.
It's sad that this kind of thing is still happening with movies being made today. Studios never learn.
Dude. Epic video my guy. I shared this with my movie buff film friend. And you're right, Micheal Biehn is a legend. Shame, I would like to see that Monk stuff, lol.
The BD Assembly Cut of Alien 3 was actually pretty decent.

There's a 3hr long making of documentary, which is excellent.
The Assembly Cut was actually pretty good. Wasn't super great, but it was at least much more competent.
I’m just gonna say this then bounce: I like Alien 3. It’s nowhere near as good as Alien or Aliens, sure, but as a closer to Ripley’s story it was fine. The Assembly Cut is the version to go for though.

No, it was not good. You speak blasphemy. Or is it heresy? MAYBE BOTH
Great episode, to anyone who enjoyed this I highly recommend Oliver Harper's retrospective on Alien 3 (and pretty much any of his retrospectives), while lacking in Matt's flair for comedy, Oliver gives great insight and context to a lot of the "what happened?"'s in films of the past and I find them highly enjoyable.
Matthew's Michael Biehn impression is golden.
Another amazing video that i just watched, and me and my friend already backed In Search of Tomorrow last week, and we pledge for the Admiral Kirk reward!
There’s a whole story about how hr giger’s xenomorph got rejected too.
I remember hearing that H.R. Giger actually went to the producers of Alien 3 and repeatedly asked to help work on it, even going so far as to make a new alien design for free sending it to them, only for the producers to repeatedly turn him down.
And I’d still rather watch this over Covenant
Covenant is a fucking underrated film.
I agree. Covenant is godawful garbage, all the more surprising when you consider Ridley Scott directed it.
Huge love towards hearing "if you're like me (and I know I am)" for the first time in ages
I liked it, it's nihilistic setting made it my favourite of the franchise; it could not live in isolation (no pun intended) but as a trilogy ender I thought it worked with lots of fun unanswered questions.
On a real note Alien 3 is a good gem of a sci-fi movie to come across if you were looking for sci-fi movies from a bit ago apart from the established big ones, I dig it
"I think it was a big mistake."... well said.
Daaawwww, the little dog looks so cute in his alien outfit. I would just die!
I personally really enjoyed Alien 3 when I first watched it. It helps that I love Fincher’s movies, and I wasn’t really a fan of Aliens.

Why is that?
In the face of generally positive reviews and making over a billion dollars, I don't think some disappointed fans warrants a Wha Happun episode.
Matt! Do Wha Happened with Godfather 3!!! Just like this, the first one was great, the second was the absolute BEST and then the third was....MEH!
