I really enjoyed playing mk mytholgies sub zero even though it was difficult I really enjoyed it playing as a kid and it's a spinoff game like mk shoalin monks and I enjoyed the hell out of it too
My first time ever playing this, I got to Fujin and....That was it, cause everytime you beat him he will fly to the middle of the bridge and you better RUN to the far Right End and hold DOWN so you see Sub-Zero do a little Holding Animation LUL *There is your secret on how to beat FUJIN in stage 2*
Richard DiVizio is one of the few motion capture artists to have been with the game since the first game, and he breathes life into every character he's played. Kano, Baraka, Quan Chi....
Sub-Zero falling into the abyss, the greatest thing to come from the game. If you ever feel down, just watch a compilation of it, it somehow gets funnier each time.
Yeah. Hilarious. Sadly I actually played it, and I can guarantee that it's no fun at all. Watching it and playing it are VERY different experiences, and playing this is about as enjoyable as watching puppies die. Slowly.
Poor Bi-Han. Even when he tried to do good he still got screwed. I played this when it first came out, and while the controls and such were indeed horrible, the overall experience was amazing at the time - and actually still is. If nothing else, the FMVs, while corny, were incredibly fun and made the grind worth it just to see the next cutscene and see the actors add to the story and struggles of Bi-Han, and give us probably the best look we ever had into the MK universe - even to this day, I dare say. Let's be honest. Would you watch another MK movie disaster, or all the FMVs from Mythologies all over again? Don't get me wrong, the FIRST MK movies wasn't that bad, but in terms of depth, story and overall atmosphere, Mythologies pretty much nailed it.
You mean the first MK movie. The sequel was a travesty on humanity. I don't entirely blame them, it was just poorly planned and they didn't know how crew promotions should work. The needed more experience in behind-the-scenes. The TV series. Let's not go there. Legacy the web series actual had real promise. The execs that shot it down did not know what they had. The latest movie... decent but lacking substance. It just felt like a diluted MK movie. Good enough for a lazy movie night to shut your brain off. This game? Bad rental choice.
As a diehard Scorpion player since MK1, I wish we could’ve gotten a Scorpion game but I suppose he’s gotten a lot more screen time in recent MK’s, the online web series; and the latest movie (I didn’t really care for his descendent as he had literally plot armor as a power).
Definitely one of the early major pitfalls of the MK franchise. I only became aware of this when the AVGN covered it back in the day, but just that little bit made realize “maybe Mortal Kombat isn’t as flawless as I thought it was.”
I rented this at a video rental place back in the day. I think I might have made it to the 2nd level? I remember thinking even as a kid "this ain't it, jack."
I honestly always thought it was a weird choice from them to even make the game. A MK game with exactly one playable character, but still plays(mostly) like a MK game, but with direction-switching on a button...so like a beat-em-up, but also NOT, because it's also a platformer...it really felt like the kind of project that results from directionless development.
This What Happened episode on Mortal Kombat Mythologies was certainly a long time coming...dating as far back as the Mortal Kombat Special Forces episode if memory serves (and that was only the second episode of the What Happened series)... ...and I daresay that it was absolutely worth the wait!
It’s really interesting how there’s not really a major story here. Midway greenlit an MK spin-off, the team worked within a tight deadline but by all accounts it went about as they expected to. There’s no big drama or fallout, a developer didn’t go defunct, the guys worked on this then got back to working on arcade games. Kinda remarkable, really.
I honestly quite like this game, despite its flaws. The story is actually pretty good, being a prequel to the first game, and the cutscenes are super cheesy.
The one thing I can say is that despite it's faults, Dan Forden's soundtrack for this game was awesome. Also, since you mentioned it, I'd be very curious to know about the development of Soul Calibur Legends. (The existence of that game along with Jak & Daxter The Lost Frontier and Playstation Move Heroes has puzzled me for the longest time.)
The bloopers for this game was - and still is - hilarious! It had wardrobe malfunctions, flubbed lines, and a few impressions from the guy playing as Quan Chi that made the entire crew laugh like crazies while filming.
I have actual nostalgia for this. Because when I got my first PS1 as an X-mas gift in 1997, The first 3 games I got for it were The "Greatest Hits" version of Tekken 1, Hasbro's Frogger, and MK: Mythologies: Sub-Zero. As somebody who's actually played this game after Ultimate MK3 for Super Nintendo, the combo mechanics felt 2nd nature to me to a certain degree. Shockingly, MK9 and even MKX made small call-backs/shout-outs to this game whenever they mention Bi-Han's past and the significant role he played in stopping Shinnok.
I got kinda annoyed when in MK11's storymode Fujin tells Bi-Han he ran away from their fight. Noob Saibot should've been like "Bitch, please! I beat you so hard your only option left was creating a tornado so powerful it would kill you too. You did, died, and still failed to kill me!" I remember how frustrating that fight was untilI figured out what to do, don't take it away from me!
The dedication you put into your fighting game puns for the TKO podcast ad was truly remarkable. Love your content and the podcast has been must watch programming every week. Keep it up!
I could swear you already covered this game, it is such a fitting choice. The black sheep in the MK franchise xD [Edit]: Ohhhh! It was the MK _Special Forces_ that you covered!! The other black sheep xDD
Always knew you'd be covering this someday. Even with its flaws, I still unironically like this game. And yes, Insert Coin is a damned good watch, especially for us old school Midway fans.
I think if they took some of the good idea's of this and mashed them with some mechanics from Beat 'em Ups it could work as a really good tutorial for people who find Fighting Games difficult to get into. Beat up the weak enemies to both feel strong and learn mechanics (jump in, mix up, anti-air, etc.), then have a boss at the end of level testing those mechanics.
I loved this game as a kid, and still have super fond memories looking back. I think the environment and character designs still hold up, as evidenced by Quan Chi's continued relevance. I wish we got more "prisonworld" Netherrealm in other MKs, as I thought that was a super fun design. Can barely play it now, but if this was back in the day and it was still the only non-Genesis MK game I owned, I'd be grinding away at it trying to find keys and make terrible jumps.
An MK spinoff does actually have a lot of potential, like imagine if we would get something like this today with modern graphics and DMC like gameplay. Also that *AAAAAGHHHR* is forever engraved in my head.
One of my favorite things the I've come to see is that most of the original cast and Developers of the early Mortal Kombat games are still all friends and they all still hang out together. It just goes to show how tight-knit and low-key the original project was, and how much of a surprise that must have been for them that it blew up the way it did.
Yusssss - I have been DYING for an episode on this. I still remember watching Max Dood play through this and when the chat convinced him to jump off the side of the level, he just did that fake stream quit bit and I lost my shit, lmao. This game is an awful, awful treasure and I'm so glad we have it.
Oi Mr. McMuscles, you should put TKO in your "featured channels" list, so those of us who mostly watch UA-cam from our game consoles can get there easily. I got out my phone just to go subscribe and leave this comment, because we make sacrifices like that for those we love.
I played this at a friends home when I was a kid and even then I was just thinking on how I'd rather be playing UMK3. But oh boy, even with all the bad parts this game has some unforgettable charm. I love the cheesy cutscenes so much.
I still have the memory of me at my old local Blockbuster and asking a guy who worked there, for the Mortal Kombat Sub-Zero movie. I was still a young child at the time. Anyway, he looked at my very confused. And no wonder, because it wasn’t a movie. It was a video game. You see, when I saw the live action trailer, my stupid little feeble mind thought it was a movie trailer. It wasn’t till later I found out it was a video game. Oof
I love your videos. I remember playing this with my dad so long ago. He also rents my brother and I MK 4. We were both... five or six years old at the time? Played a bit but the game over screen (the spike pit) ABSOLUTELY terrified us! I ended up getting Deadly Alliance in 2002, and was super obsessed with the Krypt. Seeing the video of the history of MK, I sought out a copy of MK 4 for the N64 a couple years later.. Found a copy at Funcoland and adored it!
I love this game unironically! I got this on the N64 as a kid and played through it all without understanding much English and without any guides. It was almost like my first Dark Souls experience.
I worked on a movie called Sub-Zero almost 20 years ago. It had nothing to do with Mortal Kombat, but it did have Linden Ashby in it, who played the original Johnny Cage.
I was actually discussing this game with a friend of mine just two weeks ago. For a lot of what it did wrong, it also did a lot of right things, such as art design, and it pulled off something incredibly difficult, even for its time: It varied in scenarios wildly without losing its coherence. You start in a monastery, go through sewers, travel to another reality with judge-dredd soldiers and it still feels as if it's the same 'universe'. The combat in it was clunky, yes, but you were able to beat damn dinosaurs with missiles! Something only see with Turok! So its... well, cheesy, clunky, awful on the edges and frustrating, but not as bad as a lot of people thought to be.
I remember my cousin and I playing through it for a while on N64 and he would trigger those smashing pillar traps @ 7:53 by running into them just enough to take some damage without dying 😂 here I am almost 30 years later realizing you could just kick to proc them!
You can tell Quan Chi's actor was having so much fun playing him and that somehow makes the whole situation with the low budget cutscenes feel so wholesome
I really, REALLY wanted Sub Zero to be in smash bros. obviously it never happened, it never was going to happen, and it never will happen, but god damn it, I want him in smash bros.
Same, I'd love to see Skorpion and Sub-Zero Also I thought it would really cool if they added all the (male) MK ninjas but on the select screen it's just one playable character and not all of them having a separate slot, you can switch between them by changing their colour and they would appear with their classic skin, basically like Chameleon (yellow Skorpion, blue Sub-Zero, green Reptile, etc ...)
My god I had forgotten I had played this until I saw the video pop up in my feed, what a ride, it all came flooding back! Thanks for reminding me of this long forgotten journey Matt, always love this series.
I always feel so alone in saying this - But I fucking love this game lol. I think they really nailed the atmosphere of the environments. The music is awesome and fits so well. The netherrealm was especially cool. That crazy urban industrial look hasn't been done again in MK and I think that's a shame. As hard as it is - it'll always be one of my favorites.
I am very picky about my podcasts, so believe me when I say that TripleKO is very entertaining. I have been listening to it since day 1 and I have even re-listened to a few episodes cause I enjoyed them so much. I encourage everyone to check it out if you even remotely interested in fighting games. Of course I might be bias cause I'm subscribed to all 3 of these guys.
I absolutely love the Double Dragon series, so I was really excited when I saw this game. I eventually got it in the early 2000s when a video rental place was having a going out of business sale. A bad game for sure, but there's still some fun to be had
I remember watching Joel Vlaagskeletor (from Vinesauce)'s stream of him suffering through this game. Most of the stream was him falling to his death in the second level. That falling death scream still cracks me up tho.
I remember renting this game when I was a kid. I suck at fighters, generally, so I had to play on easy mode to get through it, and I was so pissed when I found out they locked you out of the ending unless you played on higher difficulty. I never touched it again.
Considering the workers had a lot of fun making it, had an absolute blast with the filming, were very passionate about it and was even a hit at the time, in addition to it being a learning curve for the series with it's lore and story modes, I just can't hate this game. Bad game? Yeah, but I just can't hate it with how much joy it brought the developers, and how it helped adapt and evolve the series for better for worse. Would I play it? I dunno honestly. Infinite lives and a map, yeah, but I also don't own a Playstation 1 anymore.
It brought so joyful to the developers. Whereas to players who suffered playing this. And it's pointless to play the game as you can enjoy lot more watching walkthroughs than actually playing the game.
I will never forget how you forced Lythero to play through this game. Those streams were some of the funniest shit I’ve ever seen! Also I just noticed how in nearly every shot, you’ve got the max number of lives, meaning the footage could only be gotten with the infinite lives cheat. XD
i loved this game. i was 9 years old and i died a few hundred times every level. when i learned you can do fatalities, i beat the game again to see the alternates scenes.
Wow. This just unlocked a repressed childhood memory of me going BACK to the video rental store and begging them to exchange this game for something else. I'll be sure to forward you this week's bill for therapy.
I haven't really had a chance to play this game but I did watch the two-parter stream with Lythero with you, Zyzx_, and the other person (apologizes) and it was funny and gj on Lythero beating it, and beware of the many variations of Keith including Mecha Keith. Good Vid!
I was wondering when this was gonna pop up in the "What Happun?" series I never knew the game sold well and good thing they didn't have a LA Noire type environment. I remember MKM was at a blockbuster in my area but it was never available oddly enough lol. Also, I can't help but to think about MrGstar321 when this game is mentioned, wherever you are bro you are a legend 🙌🏽
Honestly, this story would be an interesting one to remake, but make it a story of a down fall, the tragedy of Bi Han and the lose of the Lin Kuei's honer. Have him see and be part of the in fighting and disagreements within the Lin Kuei. See him talk and discuss life and plans with Cyrax and Sektor. See him help train and joke around with Smoke and Kuai Liang. See him lose himself and fall to his darker ways, becoming Noob well before Honzo did the deed in MK1/9. I think this would be very good. We can even throw in Baby Frost and someone saying "What great potential, she has".
NRS can be frustrating with their storytelling sometimes. Bi-Han's story was meat to be a tragedy, Raiden's words get to him, and goes from brutally murdering Scorpion, to sparing Sareena, growing as a character, and it tied with his MK1 ending where he would retire from the Lin Kuei, he just didn't have enough time to redeem his soul before dying, so he ended up becoming Noob Saibot, serving the same evil he wanted not to be. Then MK9 came and made him not learn anything from MKM and ruined the whole thing.
Insert Coin AKA How I learned to appreciate Eugene Jarvis and those mad men at Midway!! It’s such a wonderful documentary!! Go to Blockbuster and rent it tonight!! Maybe even pick up a game while you’re there! You could rent Clay Fighters just one more time to see if you actually like or were just bored last weekend.
The cut scenes are absolutely fantastic for me as a 90s kid. The nostalgia hits hard and I always enjoy watching it. And also sad to know Bi-Han was a defender of earth realm before that Qan chi's trickery ruined him
I still have this on the N64. My brother loved it when he was younger, yet little babby me was scared shitless by it. Mainly Sub-Zero, cuz I kept having nightmares of him trying to kill me. WHICH IS IRONIC BECAUSE HE'S MY FAVOURITE FIGHTER THESE DAYS.
I am glad I called 90% of the clips Matt used, including Sub getting hit by one trap and being squished by the other. The only one missing was Max sliding (through a character model) "between a bad guy's legs" and losing the entire collective shit.
Midway should have learned from Acclaim's experience with Batman Forever 2 years earlier: Mortal Kombat mechanics in an Action/Platform game is not a happy marriage.
Thank you for doing anything with this game. I loved this game so much growing up i was surprised so many people hate it. To me it did feel a little weird to play but the art style was absolutely perfect and that is so rare.
Love your episodes of what happen? Matt. I've also enjoyed listening to you, justin, and max on your podcast triple ko. That said i've played mk mythologies sub zero and while this game had some giltchy moments and acting, it was still fun to play and the score they had was good to listen to. Let ask you this would you play this or special forces.
Fun Fact: The Henry Ford museum in Detroit has this exhibit called "Your Place in Time" that has all these regular items you'd see from different eras. Boom Boxes, 8-tracks, stuff like that. For the 90's, they do have a PlayStation. Of all the games they could have displayed with it, this is the one. Amazing.
I love this game; it's super hard and unfair, and cheesy. Also the soundtrack for this game is a KILLER and definitely makes the whole game experience much more memorable.

It kinda reminds me of batman dark tomorrow when he also falls ughhhh

Shinnok’s smug “I just killed yo bitch” face tops the list for me.
Especially when he falls down the drain. It's like he's flushed down the toilet
I think my bro still has this game from when we were kids. I never made it past those Windmills 😓
My friend actually beat this trash game, and he did it legit. I dropped it at the windmill level as well, it is insane trial and error level design.
The trick is to jump before you think you need too. Lol I beat this game. Proud moment.
I just remember the fmvs from the Krypt in later games. MK was forbidden fruit in the 90s for me, locked behind friends and arcades.
I also was super stuck there for multiple years and thought I sucked at videogames.
Dude, just use the Makankosappo

For a lot of what it did wrong, it also did a lot of right things, such as art design, and it pulled off something incredibly difficult, even for its time: It varied in scenarios wildly without losing its coherence. You start in a monastery, go through sewers, travel to another reality with judge-dredd soldiers and it still feels as if it's the same 'universe'. The combat in it was clunky, yes, but you were able to beat damn dinosaurs with missiles! Something only see with Turok! So its... well, cheesy, clunky, awful on the edges and frustrating, but not as bad as a lot of people thought to be.
The terrible feeling controls were the only thing I didn't like about it I loved it as a kid
I love just running your Wut Happun playlist when I'm laying down to sleep. Thank you for all the content, Matty McMuscles!
Ive been doing the same lately
8:53 haha that's GSTAR321 man, I love that guy. His playthroughs are quite good
His mythologies playthrough was trully something else
@@Crissaegrim-xv9cut's pure gold. You can see him descending into complete madness from part 1 until the final part
I remember my cousin and I playing through it for a while on N64 and he would trigger those smashing pillar traps @ 7:53 by running into them just enough to take some damage without dying 😂 here I am almost 30 years later realizing you could just kick to proc them!
I really did enjoyed Mk mythologies subzero it was the main reason why I started playing mortal kombat.
Love the inclusion of Gstar absolutely losing it! :)
Why not? Nitendo added Kazuya in SMASH.
Ice clone in smash im so here for it
Same, I'd love to see Skorpion and Sub-Zero
Also I thought it would really cool if they added all the (male) MK ninjas but on the select screen it's just one playable character and not all of them having a separate slot, you can switch between them by changing their colour and they would appear with their classic skin, basically like Chameleon (yellow Skorpion, blue Sub-Zero, green Reptile, etc ...)
@@narik6408 well, mortal kombat being banned in Japan certainly complicates things
@@obnoxious_alien Sub Zero and Scorpion have completely different moves though. they aren't like ken and ryu, the two were never clones.
Legit had no clue about Triple KO and I watch all three of you guys lol. Subbed and gonna binge every episode
So excited to check your new show, you, max and Justen are awesome.
Also - it was nice to see MrGstar clips in here
You're not alone. Is it a great game? No, not at all. Is it a fun game? Yes, and I say that knowing fun is subjective.
We are allowed to love less-than-great games, bro. I'm with you, I own this piece of gaming history for my N64 and love it.
Even though it hasn’t aged well, this game has always been special to me because I remember routinely watching my dad play through it as a kid.
I actually was there watching him play...He has to finish this for a HARDCORE FRIDAY
XD
97 was definitely a disastrous year for Mortal Kombat
it's a hard game and i did have to look up how to beat fujin and not die to his final attack back in the day, but i did enjoy playing the game.
i loved this game. i was 9 years old and i died a few hundred times every level. when i learned you can do fatalities, i beat the game again to see the alternates scenes.
Shinnok will never not look like an old man in a hot dog costume in this game, and it will crack me up every single time. Guaranteed.
Wow. This just unlocked a repressed childhood memory of me going BACK to the video rental store and begging them to exchange this game for something else. I'll be sure to forward you this week's bill for therapy.
10:32 So wholesome. Feels good to see some genuine fun from the development team.
Do “Tenchu: Stealth Assassins”. Was one of my favorite games back in the day😅
Yesssss. I didn't even realize today was Saturday until I saw this in my feed. Double good news!
I had this game and im still amazed anyone actually completed it.
A remaster or remake of Shaolin Monks would be a dream come true
Thanks for the video. Played this when I was a kid, never got past the first level though.
*YEAH*
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS
With better controls, achievements and upscaled graphics this would be great. This game did more for the lore than people realize.
Exactly
I just recall this game being frustratingly difficult.
This is the show where I make sure I have something good to eat while I watch.
The cut scenes are absolutely fantastic for me as a 90s kid. The nostalgia hits hard and I always enjoy watching it. And also sad to know Bi-Han was a defender of earth realm before that Qan chi's trickery ruined him
This game definetly deserves a remaster it was one of my favorite games of all time, and made my childhood gaming memories !
Love these. I look forward to them every single weekend
Dude playing Quan Chi looks like he’s having a blast.
And Dejected Sub-Zero is one of my absolute favorite MK things.
It’s finally time that he’s talking about one of the biggest “Komplete” disaster that has ever happened to the MK franchise.
MK Special Forces?
@@nguyenquyetthang1326 fax 💀
@@nguyenquyetthang1326 far enough, and I also edited in “one of” in my comment.
this game make me fall with Sub-Zero love .. i hope it will be back with Mortal Kombat Mythologies Sub-Zero 2
Certainly one of the MK spin-offs of all time.
The episode I didn’t know I needed ❤️
Dudeee so happy you made this was one of my favorite games as a kid! This deserves a remake!!!
The speed runs of this game are amazing
Amazing.
Oh god, this is gonna be good.
Imagine seeing "with special guest MrGSTAR" in the title, haha.
Matt, pretty sure you and Derek have been carrying me through 2022. Made my day.
I love this game; it's super hard and unfair, and cheesy. Also the soundtrack for this game is a KILLER and definitely makes the whole game experience much more memorable.
That game is way more entertaining and funny that people give it credit for
Whenever I see this game, I think of GStar saying "LOOK AT THIS!!!"
