    Just for fun, my PB of this mode on Jstris: jstris.jezevec10.com/replay/5...
    The moment I remembered the top row glitch I just started attempting it immediately. Checkerboard is so fun.

    Thanks for all of the support so far! Now that it's been a couple of weeks, here's a general update on the state of, err, checkerboard related discourse.
    First, a *bunch* of people have also completed the challenge. The ones who uploaded their runs to youtube are in the links below, but others that I can think of off the top of my head are hana, HydrantDude, and meme.
    - triskai: ua-cam.com/video/i_baNASTBU4/v-deo.html
    - xeno: ua-cam.com/video/SlC_jKbep-M/v-deo.html
    Special shoutouts to meme for clearing this height from a level *5* start and to Hydrant for holding the efficiency record with 101 lines!
    Second, I've actually completed another checkerboard type: 29-3. It's a very different challenge that tests rolling speed and consistency like no other mode, and I personally found it more difficult. Currently I'm the only victor, but that could change at any moment. I'd appreciate it if you could check out the video here! ua-cam.com/video/uOvy-3L3sOY/v-deo.html

    This chessboard pattern is very interesting; basically every single dropped piece must be completely burned away before one can make any progress further down. This could actually make for some interesting competition (not starting that high of course). Of course the seed must be the same and looking at the opponent's screen must not be allowed, but then it would be interesting because the "smart" play would be more important than fast button presses... Anyway, GG!

    "Parity" is a term used by many to describe a jagged stack. But not many really understand the actual concept behind it. The idea is to look at the playfield (matrix) as a checkerboard with black and white checkers*. You basically count the minos of your stack that occupy black checkers and subtract the ones on white checkers. If the resulting number is not 0, you have "parity issues" that can accumulate over time. The T-piece is the only piece that does not fall on 2 black and 2 white checkers, which means that every time a T-piece is introduced, the stack parity is shifted in either way, depending on where you place it. This results in the parity value getting closer to 0 (better stack) or drifting away from it (worse stack). With this in mind, it becomes apparent that solving the checkerboard pattern (aka. parity nightmare) is a pretty challenging task.
    -*2 types of checkers build pairs, hence the term parity... I think-

      do a height 9. :D

    • @Snake_In_The_Box
      @Snake_In_The_Box 2 роки тому +5

      So can parity also change when you clean a single row as the stack on top falls down?

    • @lilysowden4035
      @lilysowden4035 2 роки тому +7

      it can and that's the only other way to alter parity - when an odd number of minos are above a line clear

    • @canaDavid1
      @canaDavid1 2 роки тому +4

      Parity also changes when a line drops after a line clears below it, and when clearing the last line

    • @EebstertheGreat
      @EebstertheGreat 2 роки тому +35

      The etymology of "parity" isn't pairs of black and white but just the idea of evenness or oddness. The "parity" of a whole number is either even or odd depending on whether or not it is divisible by 2, sometimes represented with 0 and 1. But by analogy, "parity" has other meanings too. For instance, the parity of a permutation is either "even" or "odd" depending on the number of transpositions. The parity of a cell in a Tetris matrix, then, is either 1 or -1 (in a checkerboard pattern). So the "parity" of a whole board is the sum of the parities of all the occupied cells. This isn't really a standard use of "parity," but it is derived from more standard uses.

    I just did the math and stuff and testing with the block tool, but hypothetically, it could take as low as 74 pieces to actually clear out this checkerboard, taking abusing the top row glitch to the next level.
    you need 5 pieces to get it set up to do this trick over and over again.
    Then you need two squares, and throw one to the far left and far right
    then you get an L block, and need to place it to the left so that the top long part is hanging rightward, and get a J block and mirror the L blocks positioning.
    This will clear the top row with only four blocks and push the stack down each time, and then, because of the placements of the L and J pieces, set it up to do the glitch again.
    you need to do the glitch 17 times once you get the set up from the beginning, using 68 pieces to do so, bringing the piece count up to 73, but then you need a single piece to clear the bottom row that will, by now, be a clean spot to slot something in to finish the challenge. This brings you up to a total of 74 pieces. obviously you're not gonna get luck like this in a real run, but it's a fun hypothetical
    what a funny challenge idea :)

    • @punchingplayerpenguin3291
      @punchingplayerpenguin3291 7 місяців тому +6

      okay I did a TAS thing for it, and it actually took me 70 pieces, not sure how the math got oofed up or what I did wrong, I probably calculated too many lines regarding what needs to be pushed down from the top row clears
