"I think we're going to die." Emotional text messages emerge from ferry disaster

  • Heart-wrenching text messages sent by students stuck in the capsized ferry have been shared with the public.
In one of the verified texts sent just minutes after the accident... a student writes of despair in the face of certain doom.
And in others, students exchange words of love.
Connie Lee has the details. At the time the ferry was sinking... students trapped inside the vessel sent text messages,... and most of them reveal fears that they might not make it out alive.
Students telling each other, "I love you" are seen throughout the exchange in one chatroom.
One student even writes... "I think we're really going to die" -- showing feelings of hopelessness, as the ship was listing.
In another chatroom of students... one passenger writes... "If I ever hurt you,... please forgive me"... and then ends... with "I love you."
It has yet to be confirmed... whether the students who sent these messages have survived.
Now an exchange between students and a teacher.
The students ask if the teacher is okay... and if he or she is wearing a life vest.
The teacher responds with exclamation points, "Yes " and tries to reassure the students... telling them to stay where they were and to put on a life vest.
The conversation ends... with words that possibly show a loss of hope among those on the ship.
They all tell each other "I love you" --- which may prove to be last messages they'll ever send.
A video taken by a cell phone also reveals... students staying put inside the ferry... when it started to capsize.
And stories from survivors... show desperate attempts to live --- with some passengers breaking through windows and jumping into the ocean to be rescued.
"I just jumped into the water and started swimming. It was really cold... so I tried to swim as fast as I could..."
"When the ship was completely listed, the water just rushed in. The water really came up to my face... not giving me any time to think."
But he was one of the lucky ones... who actually came out of this disaster alive.
    Connie Lee, Arirang News.

I feel like the worse thing to tell someone in a situation like this is that they were lucky. They left their friends, they must not feel lucky at all. You should never tell anyone in a situation like this that theyre lucky.

They were so many people who suffered that day... the students who were frantic... the teachers who had to care for the missing students... there was a teacher who could have escaped easily but decided to try and save his students, and he gave away his life vest to one of them... the parents, the family of the deceased and the survivors :"(

Why not both though? Yes they probably feel guilty but they were also lucky to get out of there alive! What else could it be other than luck? Since we all know wtf the captain, president and the other adults responsible did to help - nothing.

I'm tired of seeing comments like:
"the kids should've ignored the captain and just escape"
"many of them would have survived if they didn't listen to the captain"
    "i would've just jumped"
it's easy to say that because you weren't there. i bet only very few of you would actually jumped.
    consider this:
    - they are high school students
    - they have no exact idea of what was happening, the current condition of the ship, how fast it's sinking, they only know that it's tilting badly
    - none of them have the proper knowledge on what to do in that situation
    - the sea is cold and the weather is quite bad
    - can't escape through windows because of the water pressure
those factors are the reason why they listened to the captain. obviously, they thought the captain knew what's best and what they should do to increase the rate of survival. they thought the captain was doing something to rescue them but in reality, they were being abandoned.
even if there were students who ignored the captain and jumped to the sea way earlier, it's unlikely they could've survived hypothermia.
blame the selfish captain and the crew who abandoned them. blame the authorities that rejected the help offer from US and Japan who were nearby. blame the government who didn't send help immediately, the students were rescued by nearby fishermen and the divers were civilian volunteers. do not ever, "blame" the students for listening to the captain.

What's more it is very dangerous to swim in the cold sea, they might die too. Especially who don't know how to swim. Rip for all victims 😢💐

@@jhzkr9933 Panic 2 hours while ship is tilting from 30 to 90+, later on 180 degrees? Sad thing is the culture, in which young ones need to throw their brain and logic into the garbage because someone older said something. It's stupidity. There were a lot of time to escape, i don't want to say it's kids fault, because it's not, they are kids. It's culture fault. Fault of adults. I bet a lot of them survived if they didn't see the boats and helicopters around through windows while ship was sinking because they (as a kids) have believed that everything is under control. If they didn't see those boats and choppers, i bet a lot of them would go outside to the deck which was easiest way possible to do, and to survive. Sure there was a lot of factors, but this one is clear as the sky in the summertime.

If you're confused or want to know more about this, watch 'the diving bell' it's a documentation that was shot DURING the sinking/'rescue' attempts and shows how much of this was covered up and how much effort went into stopping rescues instead of rescuing. There's also the videos of boys and girls that took videos DURING the sinking on youtube, that clearly show the captain telling them all to stay put, wear lifejackets (dooming them to death) and at the end how they realize they're going to die

i watched the thailand cave rescue, when the prime minister knew it was critical because the water was rising very fast and no one even knew if the kids were actually alive because no diver could go far enough into he cave, they still called for international aid that was why they got all the kids out alive.

Many parties were responsible for this disaster. The ferry had undergone illegal renovations to increase capacity and during this voyage was carrying DOUBLE the cargo (and probably passengers) it was originally designed to carry. This smacks of GREED by the owner of the ferry who in June 2014 was found dead, possibly took the easy way out.. Also, where were the authorities who oversee maritime activity - this kind of illegal and significant modification of sea vessels should have been detected. And of course the captain and crew of the ferry and incompetent 'rescue' efforts.

Even if i'm not doing my best by studying right now i would never let something like that happen and i' m extremely sorry for the families loss. I wish every single person on this earth could have the least amount of human decency and help others when in need..but some are just selfish, its no explanation for that. Even though they were wearing their life jackets the ferry was filled with water leaving them not being able to escape easily on a tilted boat and Water pressure coming in. Later the divers said that most the bodies have broken fingers due to trying to break windows, walls, doors, etc. 💔 all by the captain saying four words he could’ve saved them all, “ get off the ship” or “ go to the upper deck “ where the crew and captain was while they were under water drowning. HE COULDV SAID FOUR WORDS TO SAVE THEM ALL. BUT NO, HE SAID “ STAY STILL STAY WHERE YOU ARE” if giving people second chances at life is real, I hope they got one and never go on a boat again and if they do and they are told stay til, they follow their instincts💔 and also some survivors of the ferry committed suicide due to the guilt of some of them not being able to get out of the emergency exist and leaving other people in their while they were able to get out alive💔 as someone who’s almost drowned 3 times I can say I don’t go under water anymore or like to get my nose fully in the water due to when I almost drowned it filled up, I can’t imagine the last moments as they were all under water tryin* to scream break windows and doors.. story:
there was a school trip in Korea to a island I don't remember the name but idk if it was juju island (not sure Abt the name of the island)
so the sewol ship was sinking and the captain told the kids to stay in the rooms and lock theirself inside and he escaped and left the kids there was a kind crew that tried to help some of the kinds sadly she died. Korea denied the help of the US and JAPAN ships there was a Japan and us ship that offered help to Korea but they denied. don't blame the kids for not going out they thought they were doing the right thing when the captain said to stay in the rooms to they trusted the captain and thought they would survive 😭 don't blame the kids they didn't know what to do in this situation the fact that they all had enough time to escape of the captain didn't tell them to stay inside they would all have survived 😭💔 it's so heart breaking when they all started to call their families and texting them like "mom, dad i love you.." and they were smiling and laughing even though they know they will die.. and the kids trying to break the window to escape but failed was heartbreaking 😭

Why didn’t they all just jump into the water and wait for help to arrive? Clearly they were near land, in that way they all could’ve survived.

They were following the instructions of the captain who told them to 'stay where they are' and that help will be arriving soon.
And in korea the heriearchy is quite strict between younger and older people so they followed the instructions and apparently they didn't know the ship was sinking until it was too late.
Plus the captain and the crew were some of the first to have escaped.

yeah Jisung's mom127 is right, almost all teachers died and those that survived where the ones on the upper level who escaped with the children that survived as well. All teachers helped the children. The captain and almost all of the crew abandoned the ship after telling the passengers to stay, not move and put lifejackets on (putting a lifejacket on INSIDE somewhere btw makes escape underwater impossible) dooming their lives. Although 3 of the crew member stayed and helped rescue children and died - staying on the ship until the last second.

Never trust announcements from intercom in the case of disaster, natural or man made. You could hear the announcements saying that the students should keep calm and stay put and it turns out that the captain and crew member were the first to be rescued. Same thing happened in the 911 at the world trade center. The announcements were stay put, keep calm and wait for rescue. ??? As we know the ones that survives in both the incidents were the ones that get on their feet and run for their lives. The crew memeber or captain should be thrown in a cage and sinking it slowly. So they can feel water creeping up slowly till they go under.

It makes me ill that the captain killed every single one of those kids by rejecting help from several countries offers, and then telling the kids to stay put repeatedly, inside their rooms.
He knew it was going to sink and then got out himself, and left them all to die.
    That demented and evil demon.
Idk how the parents didn’t kill the guy - just out of shock.
The poor principal killed himself saying it was his idea to take the kids TO the island and couldn’t live with himself after. Then said he probably still wouldn’t be good enough to be considered their teacher on the other side.
Such a tragedy- come to find out it was all about cutting cost so the rich could have more money.
Boy did it open a can of worms and SEVERAL people went to prison since they all shared a part in it somehow.
It was unbelievable the group of the few who cut costs in avoiding all of the safety regulations which led to its demise.
    It’s a really crazy story.
    So sad.
