'Til the end, teacher puts students' lives before hers in sinking ferry

  • A total of 14 teachers from Danwon High School were on the ill-fated trip to Jeju, when the Sewol-ho ferry sank.
Three teachers were rescued, while 11 remained unaccounted for.
One of those who didn't make it... is a teacher, who until the end... was more concerned about her students, than herself.
Connie Lee has the story. In the last desperate moments before the ship was going down...
    a daughter texts her mother.
    "Mom, the ship is sinking."
In shock and confused,... the mother calls her daughter, [ ] Jeon Su-young right away.
    " ' , ' . ."
[ : I told her, 'hurry wear a life vest.' But all she said was 'Mom, the students are all wearing life vests.' Now that I think about it, this meant that students had life vests on, while she didn't.]
To her boyfriend, Su-young texts him that, "there are no life vests... I'm sorry."
The boyfriend calls her immediately, but they hang up after 12 seconds on the line.
Su-young tells him that she needs to call her students' parents.
    " ."
[ : She said the ship was sinking and that she had to quickly get all her students in life vests. We hung up shortly after. She said her battery was running low, and that she needed to call her students' parents.]
Her last words to her boyfriend... "I love you" and "Thank you."
It was Su-young's second year as a homeroom teacher at Danwon High School.
And as for the school's yearly field trip--- this one to Jeju island on the [ ] Sewol-ho ferry, was her first.
Her room remains untouched... since the day she left for the ill-fated trip.
Her bike too... remains parked... waiting for Su-young to return.
Apparently her grandmother is also waiting... for her granddaughter to come home safely.
    " . . ."
[ : Her grandmother still believes that she is alive. She says that her granddaughter is safely inside the ship. She continues to believe that.]
But as much as there is sadness over the loss... her mother is also proud of her daughter... who put the lives of her students before her own.
    Connie Lee, Arirang News.

Since the day I have watched the documentary, every night (like a fool or like an idiot) I pray that time could turn back to 2014, or to the day when they all (the victims) were planning there trips with all the knowledge of what will happen in future (basically having their memory about what happened) and they would decide not to go on the trip. This is so childish but still I keep on wishing this. Though I know, if one of the path of the bad thing is blocked, it occurs in another way, but still maybe if that didn't happen, something else would have happened which might not have been as worse as that, but only bad to an extent. I know I'm being ridiculous now (this things are only possible in dramas), but I don't know even after knowing that, I want my wish to come true

I heard that there was a local religion and the president was also in that cult, she stayed away for 7 hours long till the "Young Souls" were all down and dead either inside of coffins or in the air pocket, or ultimately, sunken down feet(s) below sea level. All the purpose of resurrecting an old man, 174 rescued, 152 missing, 150 dead all for the sake of "reviving" a person who is very old in age, whose body has already fertilized and his bones are broken open and unattached from each other, whose body could not be revived even if you stitched him up..
Children, possibly from the age of 12 to 17 died. All for something so silly.. parents who wonder why did they live longer then their children had, why their "baby" that they had cooked breakfast for in the morning had died, and there could have been unresolved tensions for the family, so imagine, being a Parent or a Sibling and hearing _that_ person died because of some religion slash cult. These children had dreams, aspirations, they wanted to do things-- achieve things.. but all of that was destroyed for the sake of the president vanishing for seven hours after commanding the captain with something that could've been a benefit at that time, but an hour later it would've been a slaughter, which it was sadly. There is no reason for her to leave the scene, it was deliberate, there is no explanation for it, she was onto the plan, she commenced it intentionally. I wonder what she was thinking earlier that day, when she began to watch the US navy and many other arrive at the scene 40 minutes before, when she ignored making a call that could have saved lives, when she didn't even let the captain agree to save the students, the many students that were still in that ship with the navy. How do the people who had been there, who could have saved many feel? I think the VP of the school committing suicide might explain how they feel. The overwhelming amount of guilt knowing that you could've done something to save 304 children, that you could have disobeyed the orders of someone so deeply corrupted, to become a hero.
If she wasn't so believing into power, if she wasn't so greedy and so incredibly immoral, if she hadn't planned this at all, then Sewol-Ho wouldn't have taken 3 years to emerge from water, it wouldn't have taken 304's children(s) lives and it wouldn't have caused many families and many friends and many many relatives grief, it wouldn't have made history, it would have been something ceremonial, it would have been something to be grateful for, there would have been a hero. It would have only taken a few hours for all the children to get off, it would have been something to celebrate.. now all we have are videos, texts, showing how children were anxious, how children tried to deny death, and the quick acceptance that they were going to die.
Korea gives me a bad vibe, and I would rather stay away from anymore News about it. I know I can do nothing about it although I want to do so much, I want to change so much, I want so many people gone.. so many immoral people just to leave their position, I want a nation to stand up and riot for their right. They are pawns, so many pawns that could have said "No!". A country with high intellect, but no one willing to practice that. Every country is vile in it's way, but Korea had taken the cake for this. I pity the families who had lost their children and I wish to mourn with them but unless they are not willing to move forward, unless they are not willing to take a stance and say no, then it will not work at all, crying will do no good. All you will do is hurt yourself more and more, if all you want to do is follow then be a sheep and follow, corrupt your own country for the good of sloth. It's a country divided by a next-generation hitler and no one wants to do anything about it, where is the co-existence, where is the loving that is needed, where is the peace?! It's the 21th century and you still live in this age where you think War is something you cannot stop?! So useless.. you are all surely citizens of Korea since you uphold your status of being a pawn so much.
The only ones I pray here, the ones who are not yet guilty, are the children who hadn't developed minds of their own to understand how wrong their country is, how wrong the land they live on is, how they could make peace and bring joy to everyone if they stood up from their desks and stopped following like a sheep.

Both my parents are teachers. And because I know them I am sure that if something like that were to happen with them, they'd stay till the end to help their students. Even if that ment that they'd die!!! And this pains me. In our country, Greece, teachers are underestimated by many parents, who are thinking that they're job is to easy. Even the government thinks that. But whenever something like that happens, most teachers are doing the best to keep the students safe! This is heartbreaking!😞🙏🇬🇷

The think where the grandmother said she is still waiting in the ship... that broke my heart... if any of my kids go on a plane or ship. I'll be monitoring everything I can about the ship every five seconds. If not see if I can find a way to go with them on the trip.

the people at fault are the crew members rather than the teachers. it wasnt their job to know what to do in a situation like that and told kids to stay calm and to stay put probably hoping the captain or someone would know what to do. i read about this only yesterday but it really affected me knowing that they had dreams and goals just like us. the things they said before the tradegy and the jokes they made it all sounds like something me or my classmates or anyone our age would say. if the coward captain just took 10 seconds to tell someone what to do it wouldve saved so many people. i wish there was more to do. rest in peace to everyone who passed they will never be forgotten.

There is a video of a girl that was 5 when this happened and her brother and mom died in the ferry. She got out in the only lifeboat that was used her relatives were not in the upper level so they were left. This little girl is bullied at school bc her mom and brother died. She has to change schools because is too painful for her. Many are still suffering because of that day.

How does a child get bullied for losing her family? What could someone even negatively say about that? You’d have to be a psychopath, which is possible, but a whole group of young psychopaths all at this school she attends? Sorry I’m just totally dumbstruck right now.
