April 16, 2014 is a date South Koreans can never forget.
This was the exact day of the Sewol Ferry Tragedy.
Of the 476 passengers on board, 299 died and 5 are missing even till this day.
Six years have passed since the first wave of investigations,
but nobody knows the exact reason for the sinking or why the rescue operations were so delayed.
Amid re-investigations on the Sewol Ferry Tragedy, Korea Now met with Jang Ae-jin a survivor who hopes to fulfill the legacy of the deceased passengers. - Розваги

The fact that she chose to major in emergency rescue because of this tragedy breaks my heart somehow
Actually, that's kind of inspiring. She just want to prevent that kind of event to recur again and by being a rescuer is actually an honor because she'll be able to save someone's life.

Yes, but its also beautiful. It's much better to take something out of a tragedy and turning it into something good then dwelling on what could have been. My cousin passed away on his way home from school late at night as he was hit with a car. He was a bright guy and was doing amazing work in the ROTC. His twin sister went on to join the ROTC and carry on what he couldn't do and wants to join the army after college in his honor just because he couldn't. It's sad but a truly beautiful thing that can come out of something so terrible.

Ko Chang-Suk was a teacher who put his students lives before his own. He was on the top deck as the ship started sinking and could’ve easily escaped but instead he ran down to where students were staying and started ushering most of them out, he even gave his own life jacket to a student who wasn’t wearing one. He unfortunately died but he saved a lot of students and I hope to be a good teacher like him

Hello Hoshi same, and the fact some people were left their for more than 5 days in air pockets waiting for help but no one came and they ended up dying of hypothermia due to the lack of guidance and negligence from the government actually breaks my heart, I hope they are all doing well in heaven and are happy and healthy 💗

Worst part of this is that those students knew that they won't make it out alive but instead of being sad they wished happy life to people they love. I read many stories I feel horrible and I'm literally crying but pain their people can never be felt by anyone. Seeing your life end but not being able to do anything is horrifying just by imagining. RIP those people. And love to their family.

UA-cam has video of students saying “We are sinking? Shouldn’t we escape?” and “Mom and dad I love you.” They knew the situation was bad, but obeyed the directions to stay inside the ship

I've noticed that a lot of survivors of these tragic events (e.g. school sh00tings) often go into the medical field to help others and ensure that they don't go through what they did. They didn't have to do that. It's extremely commendable
Trauma changes people. Knowing the right thing to do comes easy for ✨ some ✨. Of course it helps to have a conscience, it must be hard for people who want to hurt others to feel empathy for other humans.
my dad died when i was very young and the years prior he was very distant due to severe mental health problems. i used to want to be a therapist to help people like my dad but it's simply too close to home for me and it would be too triggering. so the fact these people have the strength to confront themselves with their trauma every day is so incredibly strong to me
I wanted to be a doctor, but changed my mind when I saw my grandpa laying in the hospital. The doctors were powerless to help him. He was simply too old

I, too, grew up in a household with mental illness, and I began my personal individual healing journey in therapy right as I was beginning my Masters in Social Work program, because, "We can't take clients further than we have gone/healed ourselves." Most therapists have their/our own therapists. Myself included, even many years later. Once a practitioner has faced their wounds head-on and healed trauma, they are able to bring others through it in their own unique way. I tend to take a "wounded healer" approach with my clients. I did it before, and during, and after my dad's death, and so many other tragedies and traumas... And I think you can do it, too. You've got this. You've already done the first bunch of steps: making a goal, and recognizing you've got triggers and why. Now, you start to unpack. I wish you the best of luck in therapy and your career and lots of love and strength always

The Coast Guard blocked rescue operations by fire rescue workers, making it impossible to rescue them. I don't understand why.

@@llvesff5763 Im not sure...From what I remember....The ship was tilted so to balance the ship maybe cuz I saw a video where they were slipping inside the ship (A video of a student idk if he or she survived or not) But they were sitting still and some were trying to pass some life vests while slipping so probably to balance the ship they couldnt escape....And another video show they were trying to break the windows to get out...So Sad May They Rest In Peace

I noticed on her sweater she has a yellow butterfly, this poor girl and all the other survivors and bereaved families who lost their kids will probably never get over this, shes so strong and I want her to grow up and someday hold her friends in her heart whilst growing up for them

Thank you for everyone who sympathized with our tragedy. As a Korean citizen, we were shocked and saddened by this incident. Although in our country it is now mentioned for political purposes and hurts the bereaved families, I have no doubt that your noble heart will comfort them. I still carry a yellow ribbon on my bag, a symbol of remembrance of the Ferry Sewol incident. And this year, I am the same age as the victims and go on a school trip to Jeju Island, the same island they were going to go on a school trip.I commemorate the danwon high's students and teachers, and 6 years old kwon hyuk-kyu who gave his life jacket to his younger sister. Korea's april, when the accident is occured, is spring when all kinds of flowers are in full bloom. But even if the flowers fall, we've never forgotten you.

Neay Ne it took about half a day for the ship to sink. There was 400 passengers so if they took out maybe 50 per hour the ship wouldn’t sink much faster
I remember saw a clip where the victim called their family to bid his farewell and told his sister to never go to any field trips if she doesn't want to end up like him. I burst into tears man it hurts me

A little misinformation here: PGH wasn't at fault, the blame is on the ship captain. Yes how the govt reacted to this tragedy was awful, but they did their best. People here are saying the govt purposefully murdered those students, which is bs.

The fact that the people who caused this tragedy were the ones that got rescued first.
I remember following this story as it happened. I remember videos and pictures from the kids’ phones being released. I remember the air pockets being checked and the announcement that no survivors were found. I remember the parents sitting in a gymnasium looking at a screen with descriptions of a child and they could go check if they thought it was theirs. This tragedy hit me so hard. I am so mad and sad and I truly hope the people responsible feel guilty every single day of their lives. They don’t deserve peace after abandoning all those children. 💔
Those coast guard divers either lied or were incompetent. A lot of the times they said “no we couldn’t find anyone, including bodies”, only later to be proven to be liars when civilians divers found bodies in the exact places the coast guard claimed to have looked…

They did not check any air pockets. They also faked adding air into the ship. They left the hose in the water next to the ship.
it's so frustrating that they died for no reason. they easily could have evacuated earlier before the boat tilted too much. i think all the people "in charge" didn't really know what they were doing and didn't care

I'd like to say that there was a diver, a citizen, who retrieved the bodies of the dead students. His name is Kim Gwan-Hong. Why do I mention him? Two years after the accident, he committed suicide due to the trauma. He said that he heard the screaming voices of the students, screaming "Don't leave me behind". Fly high angel.
Just to clarify he heard their voices in the bird calls as they flew across the ocean
@Is u dead? Another clarification, the government did nothing but stop the people from helping. Not only did they turn the help away from US and Japanese ships who were close by and ready to help who could've saved all the children but they also hindered the VOLUNTARY divers from retrieving more bodies, making up excuses that they can't dive even though the divers had seen that some of the children were still alive and at the windows and wanted to dive back down to help them :(

I just found out about this incident today and I can’t begin to imagine the grief, sorrow, and agony this situation has caused for the families. The note that the mom wrote to her deceased son hit me the hardest.. I felt like I could really see her pain through the words she wrote and the grieving process she’s in.

Drowning just sounds like such a scary and painful way to die. Imagine being one of the students. Just being trapped in a ferry while water is flooding in. Thats absolutely a nightmare. Rip to all of the students that passed. 🎗
I heard some hugged each other while their rooms were filling up,, but i agree drowning seems so painful cause i heard once you breath in you'll feel a really painful burning sensation going through ur lungs and its also the fact you're just gonna have to accept it and have to wait until the room fills up
I watched a documentary about this once where they said that a lot of the children that drowned had broken fingers or bruises on their hands and arms because they were trying to break the windows....
It's just so horrible to even imagine. I hope they all can rest in peace, somehow.
Min Yoongi's Taesticles there is a video of an interview with one of the scuba divers that went down to pull out the bodies, it was said that a lot of the bodies were locked together, indicating they were hugging each other during the moment of death...they remained in that position even after death..
Some of the scuba divers who rescued the children like that couldn't move on from the memory and ended up killing themselves because they were too haunted by it 😓

I was living in Seoul at the time and remember dreading waking up to the news. Watching that death toll count go up was absolutely heartbreaking and the incompetence of the government was infuriating.
Whoever denied the us navy ship with a thousand soldiers trained in rescue of this type should be charged with murder as well.

yess that’s the part that stood out to me.
The parents of the deceased had their hearts broken twice that day. Once when they heard about the accident and worried about their kids. But then they were told everyone was safe and felt relief. Then again, when they realised they had been lied to and their child is likely dead.
third time to find out that their children could have survived but didn't due to corruption (the boat was overweight but authorities were bribed and ignored it, US offered help but was refused due to korean governemnt trying to keep it downlow, the president was missing during the period to give any commands, the ship was slowly sinking but they pumped air to sink it faster to cover their tracks)

This accident is heartbreaking. The students could have been saved but the adults who just stood there watching them all just makes me mad. This accident will haunt me forever. Those poor families who lost their loved ones just to the selfishness of the captain is truly cruel. I'm literally crying here reading the comments and watching this video like it really hurts me to even imagine these things and now the people who survived, it must be harder for them even now, I just know that it wasn't easy for this girl to speak all about it again and it won't ever be cuz it'll remind her of that day again and again

I watched this just now and I had a talked with my father, he said that in a situation where your life is in danger, no one would think of saving you but yourself. Also, being stickler to the rules might put you in a disadvantage sometimes, they shouldn't have listened.
It's scary to think about that. I imagine what I would do in their position and I would've probably done what the adults were telling me, because as kids we trust our elders to be wiser and to protect us. What happened to those poor kids is so frustrating and tragic😔

People who survived accidents and disasters in which a lot of people died, very often feel pressure on their lives. This is usually a pressure they put on themselves. It 's a kind of sacrifice, a gift to those who have failed to survive. They treat it as an inner balance. Sometimes it drives madness, but sometimes it creates people who are amazing, who know their profession like specialists.
I wish those who survived, never to lose their love of life.
Heck, I didn't experience it, nor have I ever lived in Korea, and I don't think I'll ever forget it
It's called PTSD.post trauma stress disorder and yes it's also called survivor's guilt
the fact that the captain was a coward and only cared for himself disgust me. he told everyone to stay put when they should be outside waiting for the rescuers or maybr go to other side and tilt the boat the other way. more people couldve been saved if it werent because of the captain.
The worst part is when they escaped the boat was barely sinking. They had plenty of time to get everyone off the boat! The captain and crew escapes and waited for the boat to sink. Also they refused help from a US navy ship AND the Japanese coast guard! And because of that refusal of help both the US and Japan had to just watch this tragedy happen as well. There’s a video of when those students were escaping off the boat, others were trapped and trying to break a window it was on camera it it was awful seeing them struggle to break the window and then suddenly the boat was gone

Apparently a girl was surging in an air bubble for days after the accident and said she was alive on Facebook. Her parents saw but authorities simply insisted it was an imposer.

There was even a student who helped save others.. I heard he was the class president of his class and he risked his life while going back and forth to help save the other students... He ended up also dying in the tradegy... He managed to save a couple of lives from what I heard... I hope he and the rest of the victims rest in peace and they all live a happy life in the afterlife...

Since the ferry isn't tilting too fast I think it would be possible for them to survive if they jumped off to the sea where the side is inclined up. But the coward captain just wasted the opportunity to save them and get himself out, leaving victims behind. Still very mad thinking about it

I revisit this video every now and then because I like research on these sort of things just as a hobby and I've watched this so many times but its still so upsetting to think that they could've easily been saved if it wasnt for the selfishness of adults who always seem to believe that what they say is beneficial. I wish all the best for those who survived and those dealing with the guilt of surviving. I hope all those whose lives were taken are in a better place right now. Lastly, I hope all the grieving families are learning to move forward even though its extremely difficult. Hopefully, one day adults wont abuse their authority because look at what the outcome can be. All my love to those affected by this tragedy and all my love to everyone who's struggling because of it. One of the things about this tragedy that breaks my heart and still gives me nightmares when I think of it is this: there were air pockets in the sunken ferry as it layed on the sea floor. Students were alive in those air pockets waiting for help. I've seen some say they lived up to 5 days after it sank. One womans daughter had changed clothes and they had sent messages via Facebook saying they were still alive, please help. One students body, once retrieved you could tell the upper body had not been submerged. Like the student was standing in water inside an air pocket. The government wants you to think it's not true. It is! The guy with the diving bell who was willing to go down and rescue any people still alive and retrieve bodies was turned away and also had his hydraulic lines cut on his bell. Its absolutely horrible to think about.

What ever hate is going to fly towards Korean police right now is completely deserved in my opinion.
@@ququx3466 there were several reports from attendees of the itaewon halloween event informing the police that a lot of people were being crushed and requested more police for crowd control. you cannot blame the people who attended for just wanting to have fun for the first time after the pandemic. the korean government has once again, showed their failure to protect their citizens, especially those in their youth. they obviously did not take the initial reports seriously and took too long to respond.

Respecting teachers and higher authority is really big in places such as Korea, and even the parents put the teachers really high in respect. All of the crew, especially the captain are uneducated and untrained! I bet their were no safety orientations given to the passengers after embarkation. In an emergency situation, all crew should have led the passengers to the muster stations and usher the passengers' embarkation on the lifeboats and liferafts. AFTER DONNING THE LIFE JACKETS, THEY COULD HAVE WENT TO THE MUSTER STATION AND COULD HAVE BEEN ALL SAVED IF THE CREW WERE TRAINED!
Yeah like a captain is supposed to make sure that he is the last person who gets off. Like when I watched Titanic and I asked my mom why the captain was still on board, she said that it is a Captain/Pilot's duty to make EVERYONE gets off. They are the last person to get off, but NO he just left over 200 kids to DROWN. Like that's a sad way to die, your holding your breath is painfull, and then not holding your breath is painfull. I think every single one of the victims and their families should be royally compensated. It would not bring their loved ones back, but it would help the families they left behind and help the survivors continue to heal and lead better lives.
I remember when it happened, I saw screenshots of how the kids told their parents goodbye on messenger. How they called their parents and told them how much they love them. It was so heartbreaking. And to see the parents crying at the shore longing for their kids who are stuck in the ferry. I will never forget.

The reason this hits me so hard is because the tragedy was completely preventable. The ship was sinking really slowly, if the stupid captain had atleast let the children evacuate instead of lying and telling them to stay put they could’ve survived. If he and the crew wanted to be selfish they could’ve atleast gotten their own lifeboats but still TOLD the students what was happening. They could’ve atleast been decent enough to let them know what was going on. Heartbreaking.
Yes. I'm in the U.S. and I remember when it came across the news as a ferry accident. I went to sleep and woke up and he news said it's still sinking. The authorities had plenty of time to help everyone off but they failed. I can't imagine living, knowing my family member died just because the authorities did nothing. When a boat is sinking with that many people and cars on board you need to immediately start getting everyone off because the weight of all the passengers and cargo will cause it to sink quicker. Like I'm confused as to what those in charge thought was going to happen? I listened to the communications among the top officials and it just sounded insane. They were worried about getting the wording correct on a written notice about the situation instead of taking action. This is what happens when unqualified people are in charge.
Not to mention that the US and Japan both had ships nearby and offered help and were turned away because “it wasn’t necessary”
Not only that but they actually sunk the ship all the way. It wasn’t completely sunken but the next day when the president at the time was taken out to the scene, they actually sunk the ship the whole way and murdered anyone still alive

They said 5 are missing. Imagine being a parent, learned your child mostly died and you don't even have the opportunity to get the body to have a respectful goodbye to the one. Imagine being a survivor and then watching the people who are drowning, your friends or not from the news. The captain deserves nothing in this world, absolutely nothing (in term of happiness and good. he can live the rest of his live thinking of all the screaming children he had left behind). He let young, innocent children to die. The government can go in hell, they had help from USA and Japan, yet the said they had anything under control when they were probably having a good laugh when children were dying. God bless the volunteers who helped to safe the children and many other people on the boat. How many of them thought there were safe because the captain said everything thing is fine while he escaped but they were lied to and all the hope went away the minute they released this is worse than what they thought it was. Imagine all the trauma the ones who went through this and had to leave with that for the rest of their lives. All the futures that were lost just because some did this for a sacrifice (a strong theory).

There were nine people missing at first and one of them were just a little kid under 10 probably around 6 or 7.
i'm tired of seeing comments like:
"the kids should've ignored the captain and just escape"
"many of them would have survived if they didn't listen to the captain"
"i would've just jumped"
it's easy to say that because you weren't there. i bet only very few of you would actually jumped.
consider this:
- they are high school students
- they have no exact idea of what was happening, the current condition of the ship, how fast it's sinking, they only know that it's tilting badly
- none of them have the proper knowledge on what to do in that situation
- the sea is cold and the weather is quite bad
- can't escape through windows because of the water pressure
those factors are the reason why they listened to the captain. obviously, they thought the captain knew what's best and what they should do to increase the rate of survival. they thought the captain was doing something to rescue them but in reality, they were being abandoned.
even if there were students who ignored the captain and jumped to the sea way earlier, it's unlikely they could've survived hypotermia.
blame the selfish captain and the crew who abandoned them. blame the authorities that rejected the help offer from US and Japan who were nearby. blame the government who didn't send help immediately, the students were rescued by nearby fishermen and the divers were civilian volunteers. do not ever, "blame" the students for listening to the captain.

I think it’s fair to comment on cultural differences that played a role in students listening to authority figures in Korea. There is zero chance as a high school kid that I’m hanging out in the bottom of a ship that is titling. In the US, we learn to challenge authority, critical think and make decisions at a young age. No one is blaming the kids.
I agree completely. I was 25 on my first cruise/ferry and the boat is so huge that, depending on where you are, you have no idea what’s happening to the boat from the outside. I’m sure if the kids had a bird’s eye view of the ship, they’d have tried to escape sooner, but when you’re in one room of a huge vessel and told that rescuers are coming, it makes sense that the kids would wait for them, then try to escape once water hits their level (which would likely be too late to be able to navigate the boat while it’s already submerged in the darkness of the ocean). I’m sure lots of them made it to stairways or the larger open halls/rooms of the ferry but when the whole thing is sideways, how are they supposed to navigate? I could never put blame on the poor children for “not attempting to escape”. I’m positive they did but the reason why it seems like they didn’t try was because none of them survived their attempt.

Why do people feel like they are experts in other countries? It's very odd.
Let me get this clear: we aren't raised to respect authority in the US. We are bombarded with challenging the norms and doing stupid stuff. These are the things we did in before 9th grade: cut school, roamed mountains without parents, vandalism for fun, smoked cigs, drank alcohol, tried weed, egged houses, threw snowballs at cars, sneak out at night when staying over a friends house (and this is the stuff I remember). And we grew up in the suburbs of an East coast city and were in the top 20% of our class grade wise.
In Korea, no one does this kind of stuff unless you are a troubled kid. Its just not part of their norms to challenge authority blatantly.
( Oh yeah, I've actually taken a ferry from Incheon port.)

What I know about this accident is that they were held by an order. "Do not move , the rescuers are coming"
After 10 minutes no rescuers came.
A student filmed everything. They were all joking and laughing around in the video. It's sad to see young lives joking about their death. They could have been adults now.
Plus the fact that the person in charge of the rescue lied about the situation.
He said that something about the situation being completely solved. That everyone was saved but in reality everyone is sitting their butts on that sinking ship.
Parents hoped that their children were safe.. they thought everyone was alive. I can't forget the cries of the parents when they saw the bodies of their children.
No one is immune to the cries. It's heart breaking.
Many of the survivors of this tragedy didn't get the chance to live their lives normally.
And one of the rescuers committed suicide after that accident.
His family said that he always hear the cries of the children. They're screaming for help.

i totally agree with you, even in the last moment they hoped for the instruction of help to come through. they are being kept and instructed to stay in their room, and most of them not knowing the whole situation out there which is the boat is really sinking, i can remember clearly how these students film theirselves happily and even joking of telling their parents their last message. they aren't aware of the whole situation, and most part of it all, the help that they hoped for didn't come as they wished expected, also as far as i know the first boat that ever attempted to rescue is a fisherman's boat not a rescue boat, rescues came after when all was too late.

It’s almost like it was planned. No way the government wouldn’t have saved the the passengers unless there was a underlying reason. Any other country would’ve helped. I seriously doubt that after all these calls and distress signals that the Korean government chose to ignore it for no purpose

This is so heartbreaking i feel like breaking down.. Rest in peace to those beautiful souls that have passed away. 🙏 none of them deserved that, it’s so disgusting and selfish to know the captain left them and it took TWO hours for the ship to fully sink, ALL of them could’ve been saved. But no, the captain decided to be an utterly disgusting monster and leave them behind. He deserved all punishment given to him and i do not appreciate the fact theres some people even defending him..?? So disgusting. This was years ago, but it doesn’t change the fact that this was heartbreaking for not only me, but many others and their families. Those students deserved so much better and it breaks me to pieces that there was a 100% possibility that they could’ve been saved and could’ve had a good life by now. ☹️ i pray they are all resting peacefully up in heaven, watching their loved ones.
