It's been 10 years since the tragic sinking of the "Sewol" ferry that took the lives of so many young people in the country.
We take a closer look at how the victims are remembered on this day.
Our Choi Soo-hyung tells the story.
April 16th, 2014.
In the west coastal waters off Jindo, Jeollanam-do Province in South Korea,. the Sewol ferry accident took 304 people's lives.
For the past 10 years, the families left behind have remained in deep sorrow, but they have been supporting each other to help overcome their pain.
In 2021, the families created the Danwon High School 4.16 Memory Classroom to preserve the records and mementos of the dead students.
In this empty classroom, the dreams and futures of the 254 Danwon High School students,. who made up most of the victims,. have been frozen for a decade.
The government also acknowledged the national responsibility for the Sewol tragedy and recognized the value of the records in this space.
"The Korean Ministry of Interior and Safety has added the Danwon High School 4.16 Memorial Classroom to the National Archives of Korea in 2021, preserving it as a place of public memory."
As the mother of Kim Do-hoon, a second-year, class 3 student, one of the victims, and the curator of the Memory Classroom,. said there are memoirs that should not be forgotten.
"The people of South Korea and everyone around the world vividly witnessed the Sewol tragedy happen on that day. This space is not just for memories of the disaster and the wounds it caused, but also a place for the future where we overcome pain and create hope."
The day remains a deep wound in Koreans' hearts as well.
"Although I don't remember it well, I have visited here ever since the Sewol incident happened. I thought that such a thing should never happen again."
The memorial ceremony was held in Ansan, Gyeonggi-do Province on Tuesday, home to the Danwon High School, which most of the victims attended, marking the 10th anniversary.
Over 3-thousand people attended the ceremony.
The names of the 304 victims were called out one by one. including the five whose remains have yet to be recovered.
At 4:16 PM, a siren sounded to honor the victims and to remind people to be aware of potential disasters.
Painful but continuing to replay memories, this is how they heal their wounds, and mourn their lost children.

Wow. I was working and living in Korea on that day. The Academy I worked at was about 15 minutes drive from Danson High School. I remember the day well. The teachers in the office of the school I worked at were STUNNED. STUNNED. We simply could not fathom what happened. The students we had in the afternoon were gobsmacked. Two of our students actually lost relatives in this tragedy. It was, and is, one of the saddest things I have ever experienced in my life. I will never forget it GOD BLESS YOU KIDS. YOU ARE WITH HIM NOW.
I still don't understand why the Korean government didn't let other countries help when they could have
Ego. They don’t want to admit that foreign aid is doing a better job than them.
Bc South Korean government in 2014 that one female president she was one of the masterminds who planned the Sewol disaster. Facts have proved that the captain was not the only problem, but that President Park Geun- hye ordered the National Coast Guard not to rescue people on the ship, and even refused rescue by the United States and Japan(she wanted to kill those ppl but acting like this is" just "a accident) but South Korean government even tamped with the AIS system.
@@yamato6114Not only that, subsequent investigations revealed that President Park Geun-hye of South Korea at the time was one of the participants in the Sewol tragedy. She was found to be a cultist and the captain and owner of the Sewol were all related to that cult. On April 16, 2014, Park Geun-hye disappeared for 7 hours when the ship sank. She even controlled the media and reported fake news. She refused rescue by the US military and Japan, and prohibited the national navy from entering the ship for rescue, and only allowed them to watch from outside. Even divers who want to save people are banned and stopped by her. In 2017, it was discovered that the South Korean government that time had tampered with the AIS system in order to destroy evidence.
@@yamato6114To this day, no one knows why former President Park Geun-hye did these terrible things in 2014, and the most important evidence was destroyed by them. Many "criminals" involved were also protected, including some who deliberately lied and wasted prime time. None of 304 victims need to died. The only explanation pointed to the cult she belonged to. The owners and captain of the Sewol Ferry all colluded and planned it from the beginning. All other ships stopped leaving the port that day due to heavy fog, but only the Sewol was forced to sail . The captain deliberately issued strange instructions to keep the passengers in place and not allowed to go out (but he left first?! What kind of logic is this? There is no other purpose than to murder the passengers). The most outrageous thing is that Park Geun-hye subsequently banned the public from participating in the rescue and let the navy to crash the diving bell and ship that trying to join the ship rescue . No wonder many Koreans suspect this is one of her cult sacrifice plans
Corruption man. The people inside the Blue House that day were only there for the money and glory as a government officials.
They don't care much about anything else and would hate it very much if something to happen during their term.
So when Sewol happened, the officials scramble to do their best keep the whole thing undercover and make the public forgot everything as quickly as possible.
we will never forget it 😭😭😭😭😭
you n I both.
This kids should be 27 or 28 by now.
They could have families now. Maybe kids. I’m genuinely crying.
@@Azu_Xyin given south korea's recent demographic trends i highly doubt that, but most likely they would have at least had very bright careers somewhere by now.
It’s been 10 years, but they will never be forgotten. RIP to everyone that lost their lives.

Genuinely insane that it’s already been 10 years…
Question: are there regular mandatory evacuation drills to all boats and vessels including passengers?
The coward bastard that was the captain told all of the children on the announcement mic to stay in their cabins. Those who didn't listen survived and those who did listen ended up drowning due to having faith they would be saved by the adults. May they rest in peace.
They would have been alive rn. It wasn't a disaster, people in high positions decided to not care.
