  • I recently came across a nice tight Remington grade one model 1889. The action is bank vault solid, no play at all, no cracks in the stock or dings in the barrel, buttplate looks new, all serial numbers match. This is an early gun with low five digit serial number, probably around 1894. The things that come along when I am not looking for them....

    I've got one made in 1906, acquired at auction for $400.00
    From the Hatfield collection in Missouri. I had another in Damascus steel made in 1901, I sold to a good friend. $400.00

    Hello, concerning other barrel types, you should not downgrade the Black Powder barrels.
    Black Powder barrels in good condition are a joy to shoot.

    • @RockIsland1913
      @RockIsland1913  2 роки тому

      I only downgrade black powder barrels when people shoot smokeless powder loads in them. Black powder is lower pressure, and if the barrel is solid without serious pitting they should be fine to shoot with real black powder using normal factory suggested loads, and correct length paper shotshells.

    It's not correct to believe that fluid steel of that era is equivalent in strength to modern ordinance steel. Most of the old fluid steels were only slightly stronger than Damascus, twisted or laminated steel. Because today's shooters want any of the shells they buy to cycle well in autoloaders, they ALL develop pretty high pressures. People shouldn't think that because they have "low brass" shells they are somehow also low pressure loads.
    But the steel in your modern barrel probably has as much as twice the tensile strength of the old fluid steels.

    Maybe get some brass shells for it and load them with 50-60 grain of black powder it would then be a fun gun to shoot. Make some noise lots of smoke and hav fun.

      I already load my own paper shells with BP for this gun, and a few others of similar vintage.

    I know I'm a little late to the discussion, but due to my fathers recent passing, I am sitting here looking over a grade 3 (damascus) 1889. It is clearly the same build, except for the grade, of what you are sharing here, and in nearly as good condition.
    As I am a black powder shooter as well, (50 hawken flint, and 36 navy) I was thinking of a reasonable load that might be tried for "recreational and nostalgic purposes" After using pyrodex regularly, and in some modern arms.......I'm not really liking how corrosive it can be. I'm curious on anybodies experience with black powder loads and types (maybe true Goex black powder or similar) and use in the damascus 1889.
    I'm expecting that I do not want any modern powder loads in the damascus barrel, but am open to differing opinions.
    I know that was a mouthful, but thanks for your patience, and any thoughts.

      I haven't experimented yet with loads for this gun, I would suggest regular black powder would work fine. Check the chamber, it's probably 2 9/16" given the age of the gun. I have shot muzzleloader shotguns , same type load except you are adding a shell and primer. Start by googling - 12 gauge black powder shotshell load data. That should turn up some ideas for low pressure BP loads.

    • @waynehendrix4806
      @waynehendrix4806 4 роки тому

      @@RockIsland1913 Thank you for taking the time to respond. I can say that the chamber can readily accept what is described as a 2-3/4" shell, which is actually 2-5/16" overall, that I have handy here.
      Last time I used black powder for a shotgun load, I used a 2.75 Rio primed hull, about 85 grains of FF (much like a 50 cal ball load), a 1 oz shot cup, and possibly some buffer wads. (No crimp, but glue on a top card"
      It was not very powerful, nor very accurate, but it did function. I don't expect that to ever be considered a hot load, and I might start that way.
      Certainly I will do some more googling, and youtube search as possible.
      I do still believe that I need to try some Goex for new loads, based on the incredibly corrosive power of the pyrodex on my modern barrels.
      Any additional comments are welcomed. Thank you for your thoughts.
      Wayne

      @@waynehendrix4806 It will accept a 2 3/4" shell but you shouldn't use those. RST carries the proper shells for the old shotguns, lower pressures, correct length.

    Great video. I just acquired one of these with the Damascus barrels. Where would I look for serial #s?

    • @RockIsland1913
      @RockIsland1913  3 роки тому +1

      Many commercial sporting guns made before 1968 did not have serial numbers, they were not required at the time. Places to look would be on the receiver under the barrels. Remove the barrels from the receiver, look in the area in front of the breech face.

      You understand the risks that come with shooting a century plus year old Damascus twist barrel? Corrosion can happen between the layers of metal forming the barrel causing weak spots that can burst under pressure. Low brass black powder shells, and I am not saying do this, but if you must then keep the pressure as low as possible. Real black, not Pyrodex or the substitute powders as these can operate at higher pressures that black. I will have to look into the stock maker, I am not planning to restock mine as the ones with steel barrels are good, and the twist barrels aren't being used so the cracks and glue repairs can stay. When I want to shoot a hammer double I use the Remington 1889 as it is in amazing condition, very tight with solid wood. I am interested in stocking the New Empire hammerless, this was also made by Crescent, and is an original coach gun. Someone a century ago cut it down to a halfassed pistol grip. That one is worth the expense of a custom stock, the others aren't heirlooms, or rare so they can stay as is unless a stock falls off entirely.

    How do i find a replacement hammer to a model 1889? The gun I inherited is missing the right hammer. Also i have a black & white photo dated 1941 of my grandfather & grandmother holding this shotgun together with his arms wrapped around her helping her hold the gun

      For this sort of thing I always contacted Numrich arms ( Gun Parts Corp ) they have a catalog of gun parts three inches thick, plus the online site. They may not have it today, but as they get more parts in daily they could turn it up next week, or next month. Other than that set some searches on eBay that will alert you if someone lists the hammer you need.

      For some unknown reason this one remained tight, no bore issues, no wood issues. Unusual in working guns of this age. This wasn't some fancy rich mans toy, people who bought these tended to use them, use them a lot. When I first checked it I thought for sure I would find signs someone had been hammering on stuff to tighten it up, but no, everything was factory original. Luck of the draw I guess.
